This. People don’t realize the real cost of things anymore. Cheap crap for sweat shops have warped our ever loving minds. Learn to make it yourself and you’ll quickly realize just how much it’s worth.
Over Covid I bought a sewing machine and I did some simple things like made some short sleeved shirts, their sleeves, I bet less baggy. And did the same to some thrifter bottoms I got. The difference is insane. It’s quite easy to do simple tailoring and the clothes looks so much better when they fit right
These videos bring me so much joy! My mom used to rag on me so hard because this is how I would sew so I could have a last minute cute outfit for school.
No offense. It's tight, but it doesn't fit, though. The bust line is too small (at least make a FBA when sewing yourself), the armholes don't fit, the shoulders are uneven, and it's still not the fabric you were cutting. There were several alterations while/after sewing. And you cut the backside into the wrong direction, it's upside down. You can see that at the reflexion of the light. You don't pay for the sewing of a dress you pay for the brand name. It's ok to not want that. I did start sewing not only for not paying for the brand name but for having clothes of higher quality. Standards are different, that's ok.
@@summersun6536I think you were talking about the dress before she put it on, it looks really good on her and you can’t see any imperfections (which btw I didn’t even know they were there until you pointed them out).

The vibe is amazing. Sewing is such a great skill to have! I'm old enough that I learned in middle school, but I teach my (now adult) kids anything that I know and they want to learn. If neither of us knows, off to the internet!
This is BRILLIANT!!! I am sending this to all my daughters. I taught them how to sew and they still buy stuff that they could make, and the outfit will fit better too! Thank you for this short!!!
Sewing clothes becomes super easy when you have a surger (overlocker) but they are crazy expensive. Most people buy a cheap sewing machine and have to learn complicated patterns and clothing construction, ive even sewn a costume for my daughter using a tiny cheap plastic sewing machine. I wish overlockers were more reasonably priced
My mom gave me a beautiful Juki surger with all the bells and whistles attached and I still haven't learned how to use it 😅 I feel bad cuz I know if I just took the time it would probably be a life saver
Also if you have a smaller frame and stretchy fabric it’s easier . I’m a skinny person and even if I mess up the stretchy fabric and current beauty standards makes it look fine
My mother supported our family as a seamstress while earning her teaching degree. Even after getting her degree she would get out the Sears catalog each Christmas and have me mark the dresses I liked and then make them without patterns for Christmas gifts. LOL she was positively intimidating with a sewing machine. I still have her treadle Singer sewing machine, her first of many Singers in her life. Im 75 yrs old and still have the machine she gifted to me when i got my first apartment. She was amazing.
it helps when you have a clearly toned hourglass. absolutely gorgeous. I have an hourglass figure too and you make me want to take working out way more seriously. I can't sew but I can knit.
Its great that you know how to cut & sew w/o a pattern. My biggest issue with sewing was using the sewing machine. I got the tension wrong & could never get it to sew correctly & winding up the bobin
Don’t know if this is going to help you much but keep in mind, the heavier, the fabric, the lighter the tension, and vice versa. Also always do a stitch test on the fabric you’re trying to sew, a good tension is when the top thread and the bottom thread meet right in the middle of the fabric you’re sewing. If you can see the bottom thread on the top of your fabric, it means the top thread has too much tension because it’s pulling the bottom thread up. If you have ringlets under your fabric and your machine is struggling, it’s generally because you lack attention on the top thread. For mid-heaviness fabric without a ton of layers a good tension is usually somewhere around 6 . Good luck for your next projects 🙂🍀
Not to be discouraging to people who want to sew (sewing is awesome!) but realistically a sewing machine, electric fabric shears, and any other tools do add a lot to the $21 she spent on fabric. She said $6, but it sounds like she bought two yards at $8 a yard plus $5 of liner fabric. Sewing your own clothes is doable, awesome, and can save you money in the long run (or might become an expensive hobby, depending on how fancy you get lol). But please don’t feel bad if you can’t afford to get into sewing your own clothes at this time 🫶 (before anyone suggests hand stitching, it would probably take a total newbie around 8 hours to sew this by hand. And the beginner stitch quality would make the garment virtually unwearable)
Yes! And retail prices for fabric can be very high, on top of the equipment overhead. IMO, sewing is mostly about being a sewing machine mechanic. I only do it when my daughter wants something very specific that can't be bought, and I go into it knowing my sanity is going to suffer. 😅
So like. Yeah. But the thing with tool costs is you only have to pay them once every several YEARS. I personally bought my machine and shears on sale for $160 total. We'll say conservatively that they only last for five years (they last a lot longer, trust me.) If I make only one garment or project a month, that's only $3 per project spent on tools.
@@Takapon218true if you do other projects but a lot of people are a one and done when it comes to hobbies and if they sew the once and never again, than you have to include the price of the machine, the thread, the material, the scissors etc. Into the price of whatever project they do
@connorindigo I'm definitely going to. Been saving all of my old clothes, so I can steal the fabric for projects that I've been daydreaming about for years now lol
From the brief side view of the dress it looks like you might've cut the front and back with the nap going in different directions. Idk for sure obviously. Just thought I'd try and give you (or other viewers) a helpful reminder for future projects to make sure the nap is going the same way on each piece as you cut them out. Learned it the hard way, myself lol.

I don't sew but I do all kinds of other stuff, and if I'm lagging and happen to scroll into one of your videos, it always always always gives me the boost I need to either finish something or get started on something. Thank you for that.
I find that the cost of your garment really depends on where you get the fabric and of course, which fabric it is. If you dont buy cheap fabric from a market but get it from a store instead it costs a fortune! I made a cotton floral dress about this length with wide long sleeves and the fabric cost me €14.50 alone. I also bought 4m of lace trim and 5 details i hand sewed and that added up to €40! If you want to, go for it, but don't think sewing is always cheaper. It only is when you source your materials cheaply
I've tried different mediums of art, painting, sculpting, drawing, coloring, digital art, etc, but when I tried sewing, it looked like a blind three pawed dog made it. The amount of talent you have to just freehand it all is commendable!!!
9$ (Material) + 8$ (Manufacturing 1h at minimum wage) = 17$ (Cost Price) 17$ x 2 (mark up) = 34$ (Wholesale price) 34$ x 2,77 = 94,18$ (recommended Retail Price) That’s the math for pricing, you’re welcome. Disclaimer: 1. This dress is made in the USA (LA to be precise) but if it was made somewhere else you would have to change the manufacturing cost. For ex. minimum wage in the UK is 13£ 2. This is the math for smaller batch numbers as usually the more you order to be made the cheaper it becomes 3. This is JUST the manufacturing price and does not take into consideration that the final price also needs to cover your costs for pattern makers and any other employee that worked on it before it went into production But just FYI this is a dress by Reformation. An LA based sustainable fashion label. They source almost all of their materials from recycled, renewable, regenerative and deadstock fabric. They have a whole sustainability report on their website which is an interesting read. Sustainable fashion is more expensive than fast fashion, go figure
nobody asked, so, no thanks? Besides, the 180 dress was probably manufactured in Bangladesh for $1 an hour with materials bought either in bulk or from a vertically integrated manufacturer, so the real comparison is more like $5 cost price. There are more than one multi-billionaire in the world who made their fortune selling things that cost $10 landed to stupid people with too much money for 1000% markup, it wasn't by working hard lol
@@matisan8407 someone clearly didn’t read the disclaimer. This dress is by Reformation, an LA based label that focuses on sustainability. Their production is in LA (+ other local production sites for their international stores to minimise environmental impact from shipping) they work largely with Deadstock, Recycled and regenerative fabrics. Their aim is to be climate positive by 2025 and fully circular by 2030. So yeah they are more expensive than fast fashion, go figure. Lastly, no one ever asks for anything but it is the comment section which is meant for on topic comments and discourse
Right. YOU can. And I get your point. But one also has to buy a quality sewing machine, thread, needles, bobbins, the sheer/scissors (whatever they're called) the $5 liner. And other supplies)
Most of those things are a one-time investment (although she is using a serger machine, which is an extra expense on top of a sewing machine), but this is just ridiculous in general. Unless you want to live your entire life in stretchy bodycon dresses. Fabric is expensive--she spent $11 for 2 yards of some cheap polyester, but most garment-quality fabrics are between $15~30/yard, and dresses that aren't mini will require a lot more than 2 yards. You can ask anyone who sews their own clothing, and they will tell you that they spend more on fabric than it would cost to buy a similar item already made. I agree with encouraging people to learn, but she shouldn't do it by perpetuating the myth that it's cheaper and super fast--anyone who gets into it with that thought process is likely to get frustrated and give up quickly.
Yes! And MOST importantly you need hands that grow not from your ass (that how we say it in my language), meaning you need to have skills and be good with your hands, patience, eye for details etc.
She said: “That ***I*** can do for less than 6$” She was only wrong about the material cost being 8$. She already owns the machinery and skills. If you want to correct a video do it right.
I don’t know where you live but you should move cuz that’s ridiculous. I pay $2-3 per dress at the thrifts still and fabric hasn’t gone up in price much at all
idk where you are, but theres many online shops with sale sections. In europe, I'd recommend MegaStoffen (dutch brand) they will sell you enough fabric for a piece of clothing (150x 150 cm) for like. 5 bucks. idk the names for US eqivalents, but googling around helps! Local shops are good if you have the money, or need advice. But websites are much cheaper
That’s why over 20 years ago, I started by teaching myself how to do my own nails, hair, art, wood work, flooring, big renovations, lawn work, gardening. As long as I can learn, I’ll try it. I did try to get sewing under my belt but my sewing machine has a solid layer of dust 7 years thick 😂. Maybe one day I’ll get back at it.

@@StormyKellyomg yes this 100% the floating rock theory is the true way to live. It’s the only way to have some sanity in this unpredictable chaotic mess we live in
And you even lined it! I have a funny feeling the one they sell wouldn't even be lined, and it bunches a lot on the waist, yours is actually better. I doubt too they even pay $6 per hour to whomever is making it
A serger and stretch fabrics are great for freehanding a simple dress. Most clothes are harder, but totally doable. I just don't want to add to the issues of people who sew getting royally ripped off when trying to sell their creations. You must live near a fabric district. That was a amazing price for the fabric. People absolutely at minimum need to know how to fix their clothes.❤
I did a lot of sewing when I was 12. If I had a favorite article of clothing, I would deconstruct it and use it as a pattern when I was done with it. It worked every time.
Your dress is missing the nice bunching at the waist. You removed a lot of detail and the velvet material might be nicer than the one from the fabric store.
She doesn't care, she's always ripping people off when she sells them the clothes she makes. It's so sad that people.think this is actually good, quality work. Its ok, but.....
Sewing the self slip to the dress seams isnt goinr to look nice, nor will cutting the pattern against the grain/ weft. This needed to be cut on the bias for drape & movement. MOVEMENT it what makes it feel right, instead of fighting to make it hang straight The only reason this works is due to spandex or lycra in the fabric AND she's small enough to not split the seam if she sits down. Traditional velvet would leave you unable to sit down in this dress. Such a bad impression for beginners to think this works. Its a vibe, alright.
😂 more shoddily executed, low quality work. I'm never surprised when your channel pops up, it's always the same bs and people gushing over it as they don't know any better. At least you aren't selling this one and ripping someone off.

But it worked, right? Micarah Tewers taught me that clothes are like 80% vibes 😂
🤣 I can’t imagine being so fashion minded that I feel the need to sew a new fit on the fly, but I absolutely respect the passion 🫡
@@zozo2199it was foreseeable that the dress would have flaws when you see the poorly cut fabric. But actually, you can see the imperfections mostly only on the body. But you need basic knowledge about sewing to be able to spot them.
When I look at my store bought clothes sometimes I am still baffled how used we are (me included) to industrial poorly cut and sewn clothes. You literally get blind to it until you start sewing yourself and want some quality.
No hate at all. Sewing a flawed dress is still somehow better than not sewing the perfect dress at all. You can always improve.
I’m 31 and I just started learning how to sew a couple weeks ago. I can’t wait for my journey learning and what not. You’re a true inspiration!! Thank you so much for sharing your craft, you’re amazing 💘
Ditto, I have a brand new, still in box 15yr owned machine, I have no clue where to start 🙈😢
How are you teaching yourself? Watching videos? I want to learn too but I think I need a class or something; I’m awful at learning from tutorials.
Going to my first sewing lesson today. So nervous I won't understand a thing 😅

SEWING IS A LOST ART.
Tell that to all the cosplayers who make their own costumes

This is BRILLIANT!!! I am sending this to all my daughters. I taught them how to sew and they still buy stuff that they could make, and the outfit will fit better too! Thank you for this short!!!
Sewing clothes becomes super easy when you have a surger (overlocker) but they are crazy expensive. Most people buy a cheap sewing machine and have to learn complicated patterns and clothing construction, ive even sewn a costume for my daughter using a tiny cheap plastic sewing machine. I wish overlockers were more reasonably priced
The sewing gods recently bestowed a miracle onto me. I found a serger for $144 at Joann’s. Now I need to learn how to use it 😅
Eh you could still do this with a sewing machine and 30 extra minutes lol
My mom gave me a beautiful Juki surger with all the bells and whistles attached and I still haven't learned how to use it 😅 I feel bad cuz I know if I just took the time it would probably be a life saver
Also if you have a smaller frame and stretchy fabric it’s easier . I’m a skinny person and even if I mess up the stretchy fabric and current beauty standards makes it look fine

Okay that teal velvet next to the fabric is gorgeous… and the price of the dress on the ad is ridiculous! The dress you made is more stunning !! 🩵🩵🩵

Right?
because she's hotter
Maybe because it's custom made, no height, waist, shoulder or arm adjustment like in the generic size dress.
She made the entire cake fit too! damn, she is not only skilled in pattern making but also modeling. bravo!
Its great that you know how to cut & sew w/o a pattern. My biggest issue with sewing was using the sewing machine. I got the tension wrong & could never get it to sew correctly & winding up the bobin
@@amuart8997how is it gonna help them with the tension?
The fact that it fits perfectly considering that you cut it off of "vibes" amazes me❤️🔥
Not to be discouraging to people who want to sew (sewing is awesome!) but realistically a sewing machine, electric fabric shears, and any other tools do add a lot to the $21 she spent on fabric.
We'll say conservatively that they only last for five years (they last a lot longer, trust me.)
If I make only one garment or project a month, that's only $3 per project spent on tools.
@@Takapon218true if you do other projects but a lot of people are a one and done when it comes to hobbies and if they sew the once and never again, than you have to include the price of the machine, the thread, the material, the scissors etc. Into the price of whatever project they do
@@MATTHEWMARTELLO-l1j also there's plenty of cheap clothing already, no one's forcing you to pay for overpriced designer clothing.
I was like 8? That's a bit long isnt it? Then I remembered not everyone is adept at sewing. It might even take longer and with worse stitching
Holy $H!T!!!!!! To be fair. I think it’s not just the dress but how you wear it.
Mission accomplished. I am encouraged to start sewing. Been wanting to do it for years
Do it!! It's not only cheaper than buying a lot of clothes and equally as nice when you've practiced, it's also v fun
@connorindigo I'm definitely going to. Been saving all of my old clothes, so I can steal the fabric for projects that I've been daydreaming about for years now lol
You inspire me to sew! I got a machine and a whole kit never touched it since almost 3 years ago! 😅

Girl I GASPED 😳🥂 you nailed it
awesome on 2 parts ! the creativity to make the dress and damn girl you wear it well !!
By far the most expensive part of it all is LABOR and research/ pattern testing, especially pattern testing for a range of sizes
I honestly liked your take on the dress more , it was tighter , while the inspo was loose
Damn! You look great in this dress! 😍
I've tried different mediums of art, painting, sculpting, drawing, coloring, digital art, etc, but when I tried sewing, it looked like a blind three pawed dog made it.
The amount of talent you have to just freehand it all is commendable!!!
9$ (Material) + 8$ (Manufacturing 1h at minimum wage) = 17$ (Cost Price)
17$ x 2 (mark up) = 34$ (Wholesale price)
34$ x 2,77 = 94,18$ (recommended Retail Price)
That’s the math for pricing, you’re welcome.
Disclaimer:
1. This dress is made in the USA (LA to be precise) but if it was made somewhere else you would have to change the manufacturing cost. For ex. minimum wage in the UK is 13£
2. This is the math for smaller batch numbers as usually the more you order to be made the cheaper it becomes
3. This is JUST the manufacturing price and does not take into consideration that the final price also needs to cover your costs for pattern makers and any other employee that worked on it before it went into production
But just FYI this is a dress by Reformation.
Thank you 😊
Right. YOU can. And I get your point.
But one also has to buy a quality sewing machine, thread, needles, bobbins, the sheer/scissors (whatever they're called) the $5 liner. And other supplies)
Well, my mom has all that stuff so I just get fabric show her a pic and come back in a week for a fitting. Lol
And all of that is done over time. And even if it is all at once the number of things you can make afterwords is amazing.
And YOU CANT DO ANYTHING WITH THAT ATTITUDE. 😂 if SHE has it... BEFRIEND HER 😂😂😂😂
Yes! And MOST importantly you need hands that grow not from your ass (that how we say it in my language), meaning you need to have skills and be good with your hands, patience, eye for details etc.
Something I learned today:
$8+$5+sewing equipment+knowledge about how to sew = less than $6
She said: “That ***I*** can do for less than 6$” She was only wrong about the material cost being 8$. She already owns the machinery and skills. If you want to correct a video do it right.
@@TKanal3you forget overhead cost and hourly wage. She is not a business owner so can talk.
@ again she said it costs „her“ that much. Unlikely she is paying herself a wage
My ability to sew has saved me a lot of money over the years, not to mention how easy it is to actually have unique clothing.

Well done girl... Looks great 🎉
Don’t know where you live, but buying fabric and thread alone would cast around 15$ to 20$. Even thrift store dresses run at 10$ to 18$.
I don’t know where you live but you should move cuz that’s ridiculous. I pay $2-3 per dress at the thrifts still and fabric hasn’t gone up in price much at all
Yeah velvet like that where I live is like 25$ a yard
That's what I pay too but I'm a difficult size to find cute things for, so I sew my own clothes or make alterations
idk where you are, but theres many online shops with sale sections.
@@Den-dd5pp I would if I didn't live in Canada. We have pretty steep import fees. My shipping would probably cost way more than the fabric 😅

A serger and stretch fabrics are great for freehanding a simple dress. Most clothes are harder, but totally doable. I did a lot of sewing when I was 12. If I had a favorite article of clothing, I would deconstruct it and use it as a pattern when I was done with it. It worked every time.
Girl it FITS you so good ... plus wow why did i choose crocheting hahaha i like the just vibes life
Your dress is missing the nice bunching at the waist.
Okay just saying, you`re off to a good start and I AM PROUD of you. I feel bad I was so mean now.
