Worth mentioning when talking about intonation is that tone color is very important. If you have a bright tone with no overtones any deviation from perfect intonation will sound like shit. If you have plenty of overtones you can be allowed a little more wiggleroom without it sounding out of tune to the ear

My understanding is that one of the universe’s great jokes on us is that the laws of physics make it physically impossible to build a musical instrument that is in tune with itself. It’s not so much compromising intonation vs usability or playability, as that if you make some notes better in tune that will make others out of tune. You can be in tune with a tuner and still be out of tune with the other instruments who are playing (even though they may also in tune with a tuner). So in an ensemble at least you just have to listen, and hope everyone else is listening too.

I just got back into playing. Unfortunately, the instrument I'm renting currently, the previous owner broke it in half so it's been glued back together 😭
On soprano clarinet - low chalumeau register tends flat, yet it's difficult to bring these notes up using any of the available options. Any tips for playing this range of the instrument in tune?
it shows that you can tune with the ensemble fluently, sure, they cant tell that yo play out of tune by yourself, but the moment you play out of tune with an ensemble, its really noticeable.

OR…. Too dark w/No overtones or colour or projection whatsoever…. I hear it a LOT on the internet these days. Frustrating

But your ear will likely develop naturally over time as you learn to tune your instrument with the aid of a tuner.

The written middle B on my alto clarinet is quite sharp, while the throat B-flat and A below it are quite flat, so I have to keep that in mind.

Intonation is a personal problem that people like to offload to the instrument.
Why do they need a tuner on the audition? Are You expected to play for robots? If a human cant tell if you are out of tune then why does it matter?
