In most of the conditions I try to not go too much downwind, it's help to prepare for the trick position. When it's strong wind, you like to go a bit downwind for acceleration and release the power in the sail. For beginners I recommend to get in line with three chops, not downwind so much

When switching how do you maintain crosswind direction and minimize from going downwind too much?

Watching you in this video I understood that my mistake is to push the sail down with my back hand, once ducked, instead of pulling back, as you do.
If you put the sail in the right place it just gose down.. and then no need to correct and bring it back
