I cried at the ending of this movie as Godzilla went back to the ocean in the sunset. It is a rather fitting ending for not only the Showa era, but also Godzilla getting some rest and relaxation.

yes, japanese culture during the showa era is wonderful to dig into. yukio mishima in literature, shuji terayama in cinema and theatre, and musical awesomeness with the likes of morita douji and J.A. Seazer. what i like the most about Japan is certainly in the showa era and less about what came later.
I honestly perfer this film over Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Ishiro Honda's Directing and Akira Ifukube's score makes it feel like the films of the early 60's. Titanosaurus design i love, the compelling story of bitter old man and star crossed lovers, personally the slow, dark feel makes Mechagodzilla more cold and threatening then the wacky and fast paced predecessor.
Yes. Mechagodzilla really doesn’t do anything till about two thirds of the way in and I think he got to do more cool stuff in his previous film. I do think he looks cooler in this film tho.

I've always felt that there should have been a least one more Godzilla film in the Showa era between GvsMG and ToMG because it feels weird that Godzilla defeats Mechagodzilla and then in the very next film, he does it again.

Not as good as the movie before. The Movie can't choose if it is for kids or adults. The human story is hard and sad for a godzilla-movie from this time but than there are school-kids and Titanosaurus (I like this Kaiju) often acts like a human, which doesn't fit to the rest of the monster action. And why is Godzilla still fighting Titanosaurus after the control system is destroyed and Titanosaurus would be a friendly kaiju? Everything in Godzilla VS Mechagodzilla is bigger and better for me. And of course there are a lot of things sequels often have problems with, like, why don't the cast from the movie before fights against the aliens (they should know what to do) and so on. It's still a good movie and interesting because it's a direct follow-up but I prefer the first Mechagodzilla.

Ishiro Honda's final Godzilla film, where intended or not, manages to serve as a fitting farewell to the original era.

Titanosaurus has such a cool roar. Definitely an underrated kaiju in the Toho Godzilla films.
