Canadian passports are getting a new look, but not everyone is happy

- The government unveiled a new passport design, which features animals (bears, narwhals and owls) and natural scenes, such as children jumping into a lake. Some critics have questioned why historical Canadian figures, monuments and buildings are no longer featured.

Of Course and the consultations were made by a public relations company that has personal connections to an MP or 2.

I mean, Canada spends 2x LESS per person on healthcare compared to Murica, yet its mostly free (IMAGINE if we spent the same). Every liberal idea is 2x better while costing 2x less than what Cons can come up, so probably not much.

Who did they consult? That's what gets me. "Consultation" could mean anything. It could mean they asked Trudeau ten times over the course of ten years ton provide one image for one page.

Sure you make a good point, other very important issues, also being ignored and even exacerbated by the government. But if there is no Canada (outside lines on a map) what is the point? To destroy a people, attack and remove their symbols. The latest war memorial in Ottawa is in a building where vets and families must make an appointment to see it. It may seem like a trivial matter, but combined with the renaming of schools and streets and removal of statues it becomes harder to ignore. At least if you have any interest in maintaining Canadian identity.

Ahh yes, who doesn't remember sitting on the classroom floor, gathered around the teacher, as they went through their passport page by page telling the stories behind each image. That's why we need historical imagery in our passports. There is no other way we'd learn about Canada's history.
Shame in grade 10 math, we didn't sit around in class listening to the math teacher explain how to complete your income tax return form to help us into adulthood.

Seems to me the last passport had a "History / People of Canada" theme. This is a "Nature of Canada" theme from what I can tell.
My fellow Canadians who are complaining about this are complaining about a non issue.
It is a non-issue, just like people pushing to have it changed was a non-issue. My issue is, how much of the Canadian tax dollars was used to go from step 1 to done on these passport changes? Because it seems pointless and when we are in a bad financial state economically, spending and doing stuff like this seems counter productive.

Who was consulted? Certainly not me. I was proud of what the images on the old passport represented about Canada and our history. It could even be a talking point with my friends to the South. Not much to say about random birds and bears, and certainly not about random kids jumping in a lake. Nothing about it says something uniquely Canadian.

The new passport is a sad statement. Don't want to show our historic past, don't want to show our cultural icons, no Canadian idols (like Terry Fox) all in an effort not to offend. But while not offending, we're also not inspiring anything with that colour book. The only thing it says is that you are a citizen of a weak ideology destined for extinction. This is not the mentality that won WW2.
I have nothing against upgrading the security features but the new design I personally do not like. Can someone check to see if any of Trudeau's pals worked for the firm that designed this new passport ? As for the people asked for their opinion did they all belong to the Liberal faithful? Canada is NOT a nation. Canada is a corporation. The land mass use to be a nation when my ancestors inhabited these parts. Different tribes but same peoples.
While it is always valid to critique colonialism, it doesn't make sense to say Canada is not a nation. Part of being a nation, country, state, etc. is that others recognize you as such. This is why although Palestine or Kurdistan lack statehood, they are still recognized as nations by others as distinct political societies. Canada is recognized as a nation by the international community and is even a founding member of multiple international organizations, such as the UN and NATO. It just seems wrong to say a nation older than Germany doesn't exist.

It's a complete overhaul, redesigned from the ground up including many new security features. The conservatives criticize the changes because it's the opposition's job to complain at all times. The complaints about non-issues tell you that it's normal business and you can ignore it. No one will care about the passport design until next time it gets redesigned.
It’s a passport redesign, when did people get triggered by a redesign? We only use it when we travel, store it away when we don’t. No issue with it.
The CPC has no policies so they are leaning into culture wars like the Republicans in the US.
