Zuko Alone is one of my favorite episodes perfectly captures Zuko's struggles with himself, his family, and his nation. Still showing through it all that in his heart Zuko is kind. 10/10 episode honestly.
I love how after Zuko follows his mom's advice to be who he is, the entire village rejects him. That helps Zuko realize the damage the Fire Nation image he grew up admiring has done to the other nations.
Yeah but he misunderstood what her mother was trying to tell him. She wasn't trying to tell him to never forget that he is the prince of the fire nation, the heir to the throne... She was refering to this 9:10 "that's *who you are* Zuko, someone who keeps fighting even though it's hard", which goes along with the message in the knife Iroh gifted him "never give up without a fight"
@@danielduarte6802 I always thought she was referring to his kind, good side. To never forget that that's who he is and not a deceitful, genocidal maniac like his father. Just my interpretation.
Carlie picked up on my favorite detail. Zuko tries to embody Ursa’s lesson of remembering who he is by proclaiming himself the “Prince of the Fire Nation“ which is ultimately the wrong lesson and shows he still needs to dig deeper to find his true self worth.
When Carlie said Iroh had changed so much I remembered that not many people remember that Iroh himself also had a redemption arc. People forget that Iroh had killed multiple people and was a force that many feared, but he gained wisdom and saw the wrong in his ways and now became the man we know now .
I would guess that Iroh was probably always gentler than Ozai, given kid Azula's disdain for him, but he went with the Fire Nation war/agenda because it was what was expected of him (which would connect him to Zuko's singular focus on getting back his honor). Losing his son and the throne to Ozai suddenly probably put things in perspective and helped him to see other ways to live.
Carlie is the very first reactor I've seen who immediately got the foreshadowing with the turtleduck mother 🤗 "That's what moms do when you mess with their baby!"
@@manueldelgado5336 About 6 minutes into the episode "Bitter Work", she encases herself in stone armor, which has a large eye-hole for seeing. I've heard it was originally meant to be a mouth-hole for breathing, but the animators screwed up and nobody noticed.
@@danmerget oh yeah! I noticed that too! I then explained it to myself that Toph wanted to keep it human-ly for Aang, so he can still see some part of her.. idk.. eye contact seems to be pretty connective for people who can see 😅
Impressed that you guys figured out what happened with Zuko’s mom right away due to the foreshadowing in the turtle duck scene. A lot of people are a bit confused because the episode is intentionally unclear. We’re left to wonder whether Azula was lying or not. We do know that Ozai hated Zuko and he also wanted the throne. Ursa had to make a deal with her husband to spare her son.
Something to note: It’s important to keep in mind that everything we see here is essentially from Zuko’s perspective. We see his experience as a child. We see Azula tormenting him, being the one who always received the validation he desperately sought from his father. And we see his mother being the only nurturing member of his family. But however sad they may be, these are his memories alone. For Azula, these same years are painted as an entirely different picture. She saw Zuko as the one to always receive the attention even though she was better than him at everything. The only one who gave her any validation was her father, whom we know only provided that validation because of her prodigious talent. She learned at a young age that she can only receive praise because of her ability. Ozai’s love for her was conditional on her ability. Zuko’s mom’s love for him was unconditional. Mai had a crush on him. Even with Iroh’s gifts it was clear which one he actually put thought into. In her young developing mind, why was Zuko so deserving of all this love when he couldn’t even firebend well and meet his expectations? We feel bad for Zuko, as we should, but we need to keep in mind that he had a number of loving and guiding forces in his life both in his mother and in Iroh. Azula on the other hand, only had her father.
Yes. It's ironic. Azula is decidedly an extrovert. She needs people in a way Zuko doesn't and craves both connection and validation. Even as she enjoys tormenting Zuko, it's clear she also wants him around. She feels like she's better at everything than Zuko except at what she actually wants: people LIKE Zuko. People don't just fear him. They want him around and build him up. Even Azula likes Zuko in her own twisted way, which also makes her even more resentful.
man thats deep. Never thought about that while watching this episode. I always felt bad for Azula and Zuko because of the conditions they grew up in but never thought of Azula's SPECIFIC POV.

hello ange and carlie ! i'm a shadow viewer never commenting but i got to say, this episode is the one that really makes me like zuko ^^ I really like the fact that you see writing of the character on this episode (i know you're 3 to 4 weeks ahead in the serie) but it deepens with time ! It's easy to just write Azula off as evil from birth, but this episode does make you question how much of it is Ozai's influence. We clearly see she's Ozai's favourite and doesn't spend much time with her mother, compared to Zuko who is pretty much ignored by his father and doted on by his mother. Like at the beginning, the first thing we see Zuko do is throw bread in the face of a duckling and then get pissy at the mother, before his mother corrects that behaviour. Without his mother there, it's pretty clear he'd end up with as little empathy for others as Azula has. Throughout the episode, whenever Zuko does somethign to help others, we almost always see a flashback to his time with his mother. Iroh clearly wasn't close with Azula either, only sending her a pretty crap doll whereas Zuko got a cool knife taken from a general. The only guiding influence Azula has is her father. She's crazy and needs to go down, but she isn't the devil. Like Zuko, she's as fucked up as she is because of her Dad. The best thing Ozai ever did for Zuko was exiling him lol.
love this, I hate how Nickelodeon decided to end Atla the way it is in the show, cause they left out so much from the characters and the backstories. Azula is so misunderstood by non-comic viewers, just regarding her as some Psycho in the end, which she is but her character is so much than that. The issue about Zuko's mom is never addressed again in the series, until later in book 3 briefly. It's really nice to see you guys creating theories, just like we did over a decade ago as children, when we first watched this 😍
I find it so unique how Avatar plays with typical tropes, how Ozai favors Azula over Zuko, you always see the king/emperor dad favoring the son, not to mention the firstborn son, but I love that Avatar has him favor his second born, his daughter. And the son is always the ruthless one and the daughter the empathetic one. Well, I don't think I need to elaborate on how those tropes are flipped.

I love how intricate the backstory was. And the realisation of how gifted and smart Azula is, even at that very young age, albeit evil. And it fits her agenda too. By outting Iroh lineage, the successor of the crown directly falls to the nxt born, Ozai. And if Zuko was indeed killed right there and then, Azula wld directly be nxt in line to the crown. Otherwise Ozai’s lineage will nvr be in line for the crown, following standards royal succession.
ange is so right - imagine what that would do to a kid, hearing that your own father is planning to kill you??? from your own sister, who you never know whether to trust or not??? while youre fucking 8 years old or whatever?? bro...thats what i would expect from the backstory of a serial killer honestly. that is so fucked uuuuuppppp
That comment illustrates the bizarre attitude some have about anime subs being better then dubs. Here he is commenting like there was something lost in translation yet it was always in English. It is a phantom complaint he has been conditioned to say.
@@EdgarNaniel The problem is "in most cases" meaning not all, yet people are so hardwire to think dub = bad that they refuse to acknowledge when they see a god tier dub, or in this case, when there is no dub at all lol
@@YTAG33 i mean..i judge all voice work for its own merits. a lot of times for anime the english cast is just not on the same level as the original cast. im sure the same thing is true across all languages. its often going to feel more natural with the original language and culture that brings. im just saying this is not a dub because a dub means the original voice work is being 'dubbed' into a different language.
I think that the fact if Azula lied or not actually does not matter. Both outcomes are horrible and the whole episode was supposed to show how blody was Ozai's path to the crown and psychopathic tendencies of Azula. I really love how the show depicts psychopath cuz she makes really good antagonist that makes sense to the story.
When Zuko was just a outcast peasant wanderer, he had the respect of everyone. But the second he mentions he is the prince of the fire nation and heir to the throne, everyone starts disrespecting him. Calling him a fraud and a liar. Its symbolizing what Zuko needs to do to "regain his honor".
One of my favorite episodes by far. The exact details of what happened to their mother and what caused her to leave are never actually revealed in the main show, I would HIGHLY recommend reading the official comic The Search once you guys finish the series.
From my memory I do t think zuko’s mom’s name is said in the show, but it is in the comics along with more detail of what went down exactly that night with fire lord Azulong, but just in case I’ll stay quiet about those details till closer to the end. To answer Mrs Carly’s question yes I have heard of braille. I was thought it from grade school to though middle school, then stopped due to the NFB being treatable here in the states at least to me, so high school it was regular classes witch is why my math and spelling suck as an adult.
Should someone tell them read the comics after the series. I think they'll learn a lot more interesting stuff. I mostly want them to read it for azula though. Azula best girl ❤
I dont think any reactor has picked up at the foreshadowing of the turtleduck mother protecting their children to zukos mother doing the same to him. I am very impressed because I never realized before someone told me.
When i was in 5th grade i finally asked my bully why he treated me like crap and he said it's because he's treating me the way he his dad told him people like me(aka p.o.c.)should be treated and he doesn't listen to his mom who tells him otherwise and i realized we both have one terrible parent and one good one and yet i chose to be friendly and he choose to be a bully,if an 11 year old can realize you don't have to be like your parent(s) so can a 14 year old, this fandom needs to realize you can love a villain without excusing their actions, being an a-hole is a choice regardless of age
You're not wrong, but the situation is also far more complicated than that. I'd get into it, but I don't have the time to be typing a novel that you may or may not even be interested in reading. 😆So I'll just say I agree with what you said, and you've made a valid point.
That's absolutely not how the human psyche works, and it's in fact a small wonder how quickly Zuko stopped to behave like a raging maniac considering that he grew up under Fire Nation Hitler and Grandpa Stalin while also pretty much being a child soldier.
@@gunchar06 i'm not a psychologist,i'm not trying to diagnose zuko or azula,i'm just saying it's entirely possible to break the cycle of abuse, which is undeniably true, who are you to say that's not how the human psyche works?🙄
@@RubyRider-et3fp Someone who has actually studied psychology at an University(i'm not a psychotherapist though), and someone who knows that it usually takes years of therapy up into adulthood to truly break any kind of cycle of heavy abuse, and it's even more complicated with child soldiers(which Zuko let alone Azula both pretty much are, and it just gets even worse with the Extra informations from the comics, cause Azula and Zuko were in fact an Eugenics experiment to create the perfect firebender by Azulon, and now you can guess who actually happens to be a perfectionist with unmatched firebending talent aka a success).
Azula lies except when the truth, or part of the truth benefits her more. The most believable lie has some truth in it. I think the mom would've verified that Azulon ordered Zuko's death with Ozai before taking any action. My theory has always been that Azulon indeed ordered Ozai to kill Zuko. But, not just as punishment for Ozai trying to betray Iroh while iroh was grieving. Azulon was also grieving as he lost his first grandson. He describes it as being "after the lost of his beloved son". He loved and respected iroh and his grandson. Ozai is hanging around the palace for a reason. He's proven unfit to lead. He's power hungry, dishonorable, cruel, and kinda crazy. Azula is his little clone in training. Zuko is untalented and unfavored. So, Azulon orders Ozai to murder his son knowing Ozai would do it. It would destroy their family if he did it. In the eyes of Ozai it destroys any chance of obtaining the throne if he doesn't. The thing Azulon didn't count on was that mothers protect their babies no matter what.
Well rest assured you both can relax about the whole 'forgetting Toph is blind' thing because it's true, other characters forget too! She's just that capable ;) And even in her own words she does "see" quite a lot, in a matter of speaking
braille is a frail defense. Usually, Carlie is right. like 80% of the time. I mean, Ange, you should TRUST her. but the 20 remaining % SHOULD be acknowledged. And I'm here for you in these legit cases, mate.

See, this is what happens when Iroh isn't around to meter things out. And yet it's necessary.
This is literally my favorite episode in the entire series besides the finale (you'll know why when you reach the finale 😏)
I love your guys’ commentary on the show and its characters! It’s fun watching this show again through your reactions. Congratulations on 200k 🥳
ange is so right - imagine what that would do to a kid, hearing that your own father is planning to kill you??? from your own sister, who you never know whether to trust or not??? while youre fucking 8 years old or whatever?? bro...thats what i would expect from the backstory of a serial killer honestly. that is so fucked uuuuuppppp
S/o Zuko's mom fr🙏🏾
Two other early 2000s cartoons I would recommend y'all watch are Ben 10 & Teen Titans!
its not dubbed..its the original american cast.
That comment illustrates the bizarre attitude some have about anime subs being better then dubs. Here he is commenting like there was something lost in translation yet it was always in English. It is a phantom complaint he has been conditioned to say.
Because dub in most of the cases is no near as good as original language with sub, it's not a phantom thats a fact
You know what they meant and they're usually watching anime, it's just a slip up, it's not that deep
Thats rough buddy
A fan favorite episode and for good lore. Amazing
I love seeing Ange's reactions to Azula. Can't wait to see more in the future. :)
One of my favorite episodes by far.
The exact details of what happened to their mother and what caused her to leave are never actually revealed in the main show, I would HIGHLY recommend reading the official comic The Search once you guys finish the series.
It took me watching it many times to understand what happened to his mom.
Nice, one of the certified best episodes in the whole show
This show respects its audience enough to be just for kids. It's more family-oriented, and is highly recommended to anyone, regardless of age.
This episode is not just about Zuo being alone, but about the events that lead Zuko to be alone as a child.
I dont think any reactor has picked up at the foreshadowing of the turtleduck mother protecting their children to zukos mother doing the same to him. I am very impressed because I never realized before someone told me.
Zuko pulled an Odysseus and gave out his name and address.
Damn, Ange held on to that book thing 😂
Don't feel too bad about it. You'll find soon that her blindness isn't such a heavy topic.
And just like that, everyone joined team Zuko and began rooting for him 🤷
You guys going crazy with kid Azula was so funny! 🤣🤣
12:46 thats rough, thats rough {buddy}
Zuko best character.
Great reaction!
14:00 Zuko's mom's name is Ursa
Did someone say " banding taken away.... " ?
this show is almost 20 years old
I love Zuko alone
Forgot to write that last video but get ready for loads of tasteful „Toph is blind“ jokes.
When I heard the reading a book comment I assumed braille but lol yeah I think she forgot too lol
Don't worry about forgetting Toph is blind, it has happened MANY times
Definitely one of the best episodes in the show! And clearly, some 'Game of Thrones' sh!t went down to put Oozai on the throne.
Did they watched 'yu yu hakusho' live action, it was fun to watch that was nice too like one piece live action.
12:47 That's rough buddy :D
I'm waiting for next episode..
I have watched all of episode but i'm still want to watch this again..
Y’all seeemed to understand that episode better than most.
“That’s rough…….. that’s rough……” ATLA fans, IYKYK….
It's pretty wild that such a monster like Azulon apparently had such a strong connection to Iroh, but then again Iroh most certainly changed a lot.
About whether Azula lied or not?
She always lies. Except for when the truth hurts even more.
wait until you know whos zuko's grandfather from her mother
Well rest assured you both can relax about the whole 'forgetting Toph is blind' thing because it's true, other characters forget too! She's just that capable ;) And even in her own words she does "see" quite a lot, in a matter of speaking
Girl who voiced Toph recently reacted to Avatar on UA-cam as well... She's really cool too
braille is a frail defense. Usually, Carlie is right. like 80% of the time. I mean, Ange, you should TRUST her. but the 20 remaining % SHOULD be acknowledged. And I'm here for you in these legit cases, mate.
It's funny because "everyone forgets that Toph is blind" is kind of a running gag in the show.
ZUKO ALONE IS HERE
12:08 Tell Me About It....
