I have a recording of him singing Scintille diamant in German. It is excellent. He was probably the most "Italianate" singer of any German at that time. Great post.
One of my favourite baritones and so unjustly underrated in favor of the more verismo baritones. This baritone emotes beautifully and with such real genuine sentiments. He even surpasses Caruso's rendition, and I'm a huge Caruso fan.
This is a warm, statuesque voice with a surprising "natural" and easy top, the articulation of speech and yet impeccable legato. Many thanks for this posting.
It's true what Rupepill says. To hear recordings of Caruso and Chaliapin gives a hint of these giants, but we must be grateful at least for that. Sometimes, today, unfortunately, we mediocrity in acoustical perfection. Bravo Schwarz, and Bravo Primobaritono!
THIS THE REASON THE PAST WAS CALLED "THE GOLDEN ERA' OF SINGING. BEAUTIFULLY PLACED VOICE, A LEGATO WHICH DEMONSTRATES SUPERB CONTROL WHILE REFLECTING CHIAROSCURO, THE HALLMARK OF GREAT SINGERS
Primobaritono ; This is incredible ! Where did you find this wonderful historic recording ? Josef Schwarz and Heinrich Schlusnus were competitors at "Staatsoper unter den Linden" in Berlin with Schwarz having the 'real" baritone voice. When Schwarz died very young Heinrich Schlusnus became the leading lyrical baritone at "Staatsoper". Absolutely stunning recording ! Thanks from Canada for posting this incredible treasure !! But also thanks to UA-cam to make this all possible.
Magnificent he certainly was, but Joseph Schwarz was born in Riga, Latvia (in the Russian Empire) and studied in Vienna, the scene of his greatest triumphs. Nothing German about him.
A great pity that Schwartz like so many other fine singers was recorded only by the acoustic process. However, it is still good to be able to hear his remarkable voice. How very sad that many more singers were never recorded at all and that we have at best only tantalising descriptions of their artistry which, however detailed and accurate they may be, cannot allow us to hear the vanished voices.
Schwarz has been one of my favorites for many years - the best Ombra ma fu (including trill) imo belongs to Pavel Lisitsian on Russian vinyl - more immediacy than most CD - especially if horn speaker system and no loop feedback vacuum tube electronics Please if possible post the great and forgotten baritone/bass-baritone Heinrich Rehkemper who has no representation on UA-cam - I'd buy you a cd but this is my kid's acct. so don't have access to his email...
Simply stunning dark baritone -superb diction and amazing recording for the time .
Ottimo Baritono.
Un leone della lirica.

He died before the electronic process was invented.
