- Sher Garhi Palace
The Shergarhi Fort is situated near the bridge of Amirakadal, Srinagar. The fort was originally laid out by the Afghan Governor Amira Khan Jawansher (1770-76) on the site previously called Darabagh. According to BC Hugal, “I have omitted a few words on Shahergur which derives its name, according to the best authorities not from Shahar city or Sher Lion, but from the Shiah the persian sect of Mohammadans. The palace was built by Amir Khan Jehan and were called Nursingghur by the Sikhs”. (Travels in Kashmir and the Punjab, p-120). Moorcraft concludes that Shergar fortress is no great strength or extent.

The Shergarhi fort serves the double purpo#shergadihistory of a fort and a palace. “Originally, it was rectangular in shape about 400 yards long and 200 years wide. It was built of stones and mortar. Its walls were about 22 feet high supported at interval by strong bastions as we find in the rampart around the Hari Parbat fort. The interior consisted of develling houses, government offices and barracks for soldiers. The Southern, Western and North western sides were protected by a ditch 30 feet wide. The north western side was bounded by the extant Kut-Kol canal, and the eastern side by the Jhelum river and its stout embankment”. (Kashmir Handbook Mr. Ince, P-144).
Located on the left bank of River Jhelum near the Budshah Bridge. Built originally by Afghan governor Ameer Jawan Sher Qizilbash in around 1772. It is said the stones for the palace came from Pathar Masjid. It was built on a site where King Ananta had built his Royal Palace in 1062-63. Later it became palace of Dogras who added a Dogra art touch to it. Sometime before 1900, the palace was again renovated in faux Greco-Roman style with great Grecian columns.
