Just had to say a HUGE thank you to you Pete. I'm a computer nerd and very much NOT a woodworker. This is officially now my first completed DIY woodworking project. 2 shelves took me 3 days (including paint time) but was well worth it. I had to buy a table saw, drills an air compressor and nailers, and it was my first time working with them. Your instructions were clear, understandable and all in all excellent. THANK YOU!!!

Reminder note to everyone planning on making these: locate your studs before building your brackets, and space out the support boards on the bracket so that they're not blocking any studs. You can't really use dry wall anchors to hang floating shelves, so it's important that you have enough studs to mount on.

DIY PETE I wanted some floating shelves for my room so I watched the video and wanna try making atleast two on my own, plus the ones you made in the video look better than some I see online for $50 each, too bad I have no tools. No problem,if I ever need to start crafting something I know where to go for the tutorials 👍

Hi Pete. Just downloaded the plans for these/these shelves. This project is perfect for our small bedroom/office/sewing room. We plan to use collapsable fabric boxes for storing office stuff, sewing gear for my wife, and other misc. stuff. This shelf design will hold the weight and we won't clutter the room up with cabinets. Plus, we can easily take the shelves down, patch the holes, and repaint. I'm anxious to get started as soon as weather clears. Thanks, brother.

I love that weatherd look !
I bult a new 9 surfboard rack for my living room .. and used some pallets for the flooring with 2 inch boards on every other 3inch board to give it that board walk look .. standed the 3inch darker and stained the 2 inch board lighter really made it stand out nice .. with the pegs i stained them as well .. the framing was a 4inch pine trim boards i bought at your local hardwood store .. bought them preprimed white and then bought spray can gray primer , hit the frame with that .then sanded off some of the gray to give it the weathered look ... I wish i seen this idea .. wow works AWESOME ! .. sorry i thought i would share my story about my weathered look build lol .

Pete I watched this several times. I didn't build it like you did so that it just slid over the supports on the wall, but I used some leftover tongue and groove wood for some shelves. Don't know how to post pics here of them? However, video of yours helped a lot. Pro Tip: If you are going to use zip anchors in the wall, make sure you take all the slack out of them. LOL

Really like this idea. I was looking as I want to make some that are hollow to go below my tv when mounted but adjust slightly to a have small access panel hidden by consoles to tuck in some wires from consoles and tv box in to and then into a further access panel in the actual wall which will go down into the mains and Ethernet connections. I’d put small circular holes in the two middle sections to thread wires through 😬

I'm hoping I can do the finish and sanding at home. I live in an apartment so I'm going have to get people to cut this for me at Lowe's. The only item I can find that's rustic with this dark walnut finish is on etsy but they begin at 60$. Fingers crossed.

I would like to make one but with less need of so many high powered tools. Not a easy DIY 😏 But very impressive. 👍

Sure it’s easy! If you don’t have a table saw to trim down the 2x4’s you could always just use a 2x4 but turn it so it’s horizontal for the brace pieces. Your shelf wouldn’t be as thick but it would still work.

so the width of the support frame needs to be 1.5" shorter to account for the 3/4" side boards correct?

Thanks for the great video, I thought maybe I could steal the hanging part for a large shadow box I built and I can see it won't work for that, but wow, I love that shelf. That patina is so beautiful, it takes Mother Nature so much longer! :) I subscribed, can't wait to try some of this stuff. Now to continue the hunt for a way to hang my shadow box or whatever it's called. Nic Nackie Dust Catcher maybe? Have fun

Curious what you would charge a customer?I'm asking because I have people asking me to make them.I am awful at pricing things out. Thanks

+Rob D Hey Rob! Pricing work really varies. Of course, it needs to be worth your time and energy as you are in business for reason. I don't do too much custom work or work for clients - but I'd say if I were to price these along with installation - it would be in the $150 range.

Would you consider using full width 2x4 if you wanted to make a longer shelf? Whatever your plan to put on the shelf will pretty much dictate width of 2x4 against wall.

      @DIYPETE  8 років тому

+Tim Flynn If I was doing a more heavy duty shelf, using a 2x4 would certainly be a good idea. Best of luck!

How much weight can they take? I'd like to make some shelves like that which can take my Wharfedale speakers. The shelves will be attached to a concrete wall.

Michiel van Leeuwen you need tapcons. pre-drill and mark the wall. make sure theyre in the block, not the joints. it should hold.

There are two failure points: 1) Will it pull out of the studs. Mitigate this with decent lag bolts and they'll hold whatever you need. 2) Will the perpendicular 2-bys pull out of the lengthwise 2-by they are screwed into? If screwed in from behind with long screws (stronger than the pocket-hole approach), you'd have ample strength for speakers IMO.
