I think it might be upgraded to an EF5 at parts of the track. I saw a photo of a vehicle lift that was ripped out of the concrete, the anchor bolts were still attached to the feet of the lift. And the bolts looked a little bent to me. Not folded completely sideways into L, but not straight. And there was I think 6 bolts per foot. It had to take a lot of force to pull this thing out and knock it over. They take the force of vehicles vertically all day long. The pros will have to survey it though. It could have been something slamming into it that caused it to come out of the concrete. Or its jist not made for horizontal forces. But then you gotta ask. What giant thing was blown that hard to rip this thing out of the ground. Ignore the engendering details for a second. What actually caused this to happen assuming it was anchored properly.

I think that a tornado should be rated based on a mixture of documented wind speed (the estimation), actual damage caused (the extent), and the overall communal impact (the severity). All these factors should be taken into account/consideration when determining the strength of a tornado; not just solely the severity/ type of damage caused.
The issue with this is there are a lot of tornadoes that occur in quick spin ups that are not seen on radar. They can happen between scans. How do you measure something you cannot see? Plus unless the tornado is right on top of it, the further you are from a radar the higher up in the cloud you are looking. It something like 40 miles you are 8-10 feet with observation. Tornadoes happen mainly in the bottom 0-3km range.
I just barely missed this tornado. I was passing through Iowa that day going to visit my son and this tornado had already struck. There was a detour and I think it had to do with tornado damage or an accident. So glad we missed it!
I think they need a better system. The Oolagah Ok. Tornado, April. 26, 1991, was two miles wide, but none of the damage was very intense. This one, doesn't appear to be more than 100 yds wide, but the damage looks like it went thru a blender. That lil sucker was INTENSE! Wide doesn't mean all that bad. Andover 1991 was the perfect merger of wide vs intensity. A rare thing.
I wouldn't say perfect merger... The Andover Tornado wasn't massive but it was insanely powerful, even for an F5. The level of windrowing and granulation has only been seen in Smithville or Mayfield.
So, it can be an EF-5 in the air, but an EF-4 on touchdown. The ground friction slows it down a tad, I suppose. But, nevertheless ... Still a very powerful cyclone. 🦅

I'm not sure if many public available radars have some of the filtering or mode tools available like the debris tracker. Although I think there are some things to look for if the radar has enough resolution and frame density in time-lapse mode. I'm not sure of the exact terminology, but I look for a "roller" in the return pattern. Think of it as the sign of a looser vortex that's on its side which moves horizontally with the storm. (Sometimes those are over a hundred miles long.) It's this barber pole banding or sometimes coil banding that moves with the weather pattern. If part of the rolling action is faster relative to the rest, and it gets tighter and kinked up into an S-shape, that's one of the spots to watch out for. I'd guess the speeds of circulation in the roller may be something like 40 to 100MPH aloft, but when it tightens up it's just like an ice skater doing a spin and pulling their arms in. It concentrates all that momentum and then doubles or triples what it starts with. Then if it's an option available through a website, you can do the storm-relative speed thing mentioned in the video to and using the contrast to get an idea of how strong it can be. If some of those things I'm picturing going on with that bit of information are correct, then calling a tornado a "twister" really is a more than apt description. It's one of those big horizontal vortices folding over into a kink and twisting up upon itself.

Their visual products seem rather coarse and crude-looking, compared to simply using the RadarScope app super-res products. I would have thought a TV crew doing post-analysis would have shown more cutting-edge visuals available these days.
What are you talking about I live in Greenfield, this is ef4 to ef5 damage 150+ homes were ripped off there foundation and lofted into the air 45,000 feet in the air, my grandpa lives about 30 miles away and he said that there was debris falling from the sky, but if you could come and see the damage in real life you would change your mind, all I'm saying is that sometimes socal media does not capture the damage enough
I seen it i live in corning by where it started luckily missed town but damage outside of town and there was a lose of life here as well. Crazy it went all the way to greenfield and did all the damage its sad
@@di114n2 I don't think you understand how wind speeds work. The Joplin tornado easily had winds in excess of 200 MPH and did damage that was slightly worse than this but on a much larger scale. I bet you're one of those people who thinks that skinny tornadoes are weak and that all large tornadoes are strong. Here's a little bit of education for you - it's not the tornado size that determines the rating but the measured damage. This tornado mangled cars and swept away houses which is what EF-4 and EF-5 tornadoes do.

A tornado emergency wasn't issued because Greenfield wasn't considered populated enough. It has less than 3,000 people. The tornado passed through fields mostly. A PDS tornado warning is enough to get my ass in a shelter.

It was not an f5, I’ve seen f5s and their damage is on an entirely different scale. I spent all day today working recovery in Greenfield and it looked to me like a strong f3 or weak f4. The thing is that houses in greenfield are old to very old and not built to tolerate storms well. They easily lift off their foundations. While most of the trees were stripped of small limbs, I saw no trees that were debarked. Debarking is a sign of f5. What I saw up close was consistent with sting 3 or weak 4. It was a long exhausting day and tomorrow won’t be better.
I was hoping there was going to be measurements of for vrot and other stuff. Boo boring. I will take my meteorology from the awesome dudes on twitter. For those wondering. The DOW or Doppler on wheels was stationed at this tornado. They recorded winds of 290mph at 44m (144ft).

@@alekverhovod what kind of crack are you smoking? Tornadoes are not radiological in nature. They don’t produce gamma sources. They are wind currents that generate a strong rotating up draft. Take the tinfoil hat off. Supercells are not clouds with holes either… if you see a “hole” on radar it is caused by the tornado being huge and the wall cloud being picked up from radar.
Too wide of an area to evacuate with too many people to move in too short of time. Of all the PDS watches I was ever under, the closest damaging tornado that I ever encountered was the 2013 Washington, Illinois tornado that struck ten miles east of my location. The best you can do is have a place of shelter, and keep an eye and ear open for approaching storms. If you follow your local weather service office's website and keep abreast of radar images and reports of severe weather, you can have an hour or more advance notice that something bad is heading your way. If you don't have a shelter, and know that a strong, damaging tornado is approaching your area, go to someone who does have a strong shelter or evacuate the area.
No, that's logistically impossible. But Tornado Emergencies should have been issued, especially for Greenfield. And they were not. There are also not enough tornado shelters and that's a massive understatement. And the ones that are in place are often in horrible condition. I'm a storm spotter for the NWS and I was in Cedar Rapids this day. We got the end of the severe weather event and sirens only went off once for 70+ winds. They were going for practically 3 minutes. That's it. This was after Greenfield. And emergency management decided 3 minutes was enough. The storm hit about 5 minutes later, after the sirens shut off. And they never came back on. Fortunately - we didn't get hit by a tornado.

Media coverage made it look like a mile-wide tornado obliterated a large swath of the town. What I will never forget is the sound. I could hear it from ten miles away as the crow flies. The roar sounded like the sound effect used for the thrusters of the original battlestar _Galactica._ This rumbling roar was combined with a buzzing/hissing sound that put me in mind of having your ear next to the hose end of a running vacuum cleaner. After the noise died down, I got on the local weather service website and learned of a destructive tornado passing through Tazewell county. I brought up the co-ordinates of the location given in the storm report, and it was Business 24 in Washington next to Hillcrest Golf.
I get why people want to hear its a EF5 from a Meteorological and Scientic Standpoint, but in the end people were killed and hundreds upon hundreds more had their lives completely decimated. So the rating of strength is obsolete to them. Thoughts and Prayers for that Town.

Wonder why in Tornado Alley they live in square wood boxes that have a large surface area that winds can just SLAM right into. If only you knew about angles and curves...A plane is not a square box, a boat is not a square box, both are designed to cut through the winds. Water and air are very similar, your homes should be aerodynamic, just like homes in California should be fire resistant..C'mon its 2024. Introduce new thoughts and Ideas...this is ridiculous. I bet students from local universities could designed safer homes...
The much easier and more practical solution would be to have more storm shelters. Tornado damage is dramatic when it happens, but it is exceedingly rare that any house even in the midwest gets hit by a tornado. Hard to justify the cost and most likely impractical nature of a house designed the way you suggest.

Cinder Block walls that do not have steel rebar inside are not going to hold up to an F3 tornado. No house in the mid west should be sold with out a tornado shelter in it.

I don't understand how this guy is saying this is EF-3 damage when even amateurs know this is catastrophic damage (which is EF-4 or EF-5 damage).

Supercells are not clouds with holes either… if you see a “hole” on radar it is caused by the tornado being huge and the wall cloud being picked up from radar.

No, that's logistically impossible. But Tornado Emergencies should have been issued, especially for Greenfield. And they were not. There are also not enough tornado shelters and that's a massive understatement. And the ones that are in place are often in horrible condition. I'm a storm spotter for the NWS and I was in Cedar Rapids this day. We got the end of the severe weather event and sirens only went off once for 70+ winds. They were going for practically 3 minutes. That's it. This was after Greenfield. And emergency management decided 3 minutes was enough. The storm hit about 5 minutes later, after the sirens shut off. And they never came back on. Fortunately - we didn't get hit by a tornado.

Media coverage made it look like a mile-wide tornado obliterated a large swath of the town. What I will never forget is the sound. I could hear it from ten miles away as the crow flies. I actually thought a tornado was coming at me. The roar sounded like the sound effect used for the thrusters of the original battlestar _Galactica._ This rumbling roar was combined with a buzzing/hissing sound that put me in mind of having your ear next to the hose end of a running vacuum cleaner. I was outside my basement looking to the southwest expecting to see power flashes and debris from an approaching tornado. But one never came. After the noise died down, I got on the local weather service website and learned of a destructive tornado passing through Tazewell county. I brought up the co-ordinates of the location given in the storm report, and it was Business 24 in Washington next to Hillcrest Golf.

I get why people want to hear its a EF5 from a Meteorological and Scientic Standpoint, but in the end people were killed and hundreds upon hundreds more had their lives completely decimated. So the rating of strength is obsolete to them. Thoughts and Prayers for that Town.

Wonder why in Tornado Alley they live in square wood boxes that have a large surface area that winds can just SLAM right into. If only you knew about angles and curves...A plane is not a square box, a boat is not a square box, both are designed to cut through the winds. Water and air are very similar, your homes should be aerodynamic, just like homes in California should be fire resistant..C'mon its 2024. Introduce new thoughts and Ideas...this is ridiculous. I bet students from local universities could designed safer homes...
The much easier and more practical solution would be to have more storm shelters. Tornado damage is dramatic when it happens, but it is exceedingly rare that any house even in the midwest gets hit by a tornado. Hard to justify the cost and most likely impractical nature of a house designed the way you suggest.
@@CaseyDarwin I agree, but less damage is better, homes should have both, should be concrete in some areas, portions could be underground, more curved surfaces using construction to break up the winds, turbines that generate electricity that can be stored. Shelters are great...but after the damage you have to deal with insurance companies. Nature has laws
Cinder Block walls that do not have steel rebar inside are not going to hold up to an F3 tornado. No house in the mid west should be sold with out a tornado shelter in it.
Or hear me out. We build massive boxes in the ground that when a tornado probability exceeds 5%, the houses are lowered underground a day in advance.
