Early Genesis was amazing. The performances and songs were so theatrical. It was like watching a rock version of opera. Peter Gabriel knew how to put on a show as the frontman, even a little later when he started wearing costumes and theatrical makeup. They also gelled because the others in the band played the music while staying low-key so they didn’t distract from Peter. This is one of the most gorgeous guitar solos ever. Steve Hackett brought so much to Genesis. He often gets overlooked, but Genesis was greatly enriched by his musicianship and his heart. No one plays quite like him. My favorite for sure!
Hackett is undoubtably majestic here and he still performs it exceptionally live. But what those performances do lack most notably are Collins and Rutherford, who are exceptional on this track. Anyone who knows anything about guitar would rate Hackett. Collins is also rightly highly regarded as a drummer. Rutherford and Banks are probably the most underrated on their respective instruments. The former is mesmerising in the peroration of Salmacis.

This particular filmed performance was the one that got me into Gabriel Era Genesis...transmitted on Scottish Television at 2.30a.m, circa 1984, and recorded straight onto V.H.S, and watched every School Lunch hour. Made my own Bootleg Cassette with a photocopied cover of a shot from this Belgian TV Show. Genesis were so much more as a prog band . Collins took them into ' pop ' territory and as usual money , fame etc came more easily . I personally prefer bands who push themselves into more complicated and dangerous stuff . But obviously with Collins pushing , Banks and Rutherford went along with him and would rather play silly 4 minutes pop songs than push boundaries . Sad imo .
@@richybatty234 Bit wrong, the pop songs came mostly from Banks and Rutherford, funnily enough. They enjoyed and got better at smaller songs and were proud of them. Phil never had that much sway in Genesis, it's Tony's band mostly. While they never stopped using weird time signatures and had a few hits, most of their songs were too long for the radio and had incredible passages up until they stopped making albums. Some of the most amazing prog songs they did came in their "pop" era too. Duke's Travels, Domino, Home by the Sea, The Brazilian. People just ignore that, because Invisible Touch was popular. In fact their last two albums with Phil only had 2 songs that would fit a radio play time. Their longest songs are Supper's Ready and Duke's Travels at 20ish and 30ish minutes, but every albums has a 8-10 minute song, many instrumentals, amazing chord progressions and some virtuosity.
This song was played really live in the TV studio, there was no any phonogram. Now it's even hard to believe how old this song is! Of course, the present time neoprog bands create many good songs but anyway the Genesis charisma is considered to be unsurpassable. My opinion.
@@MrNewton1961 Oh wow, this has me mystified. It sort of looks like Tony’s playing it, but then they cut to him and he’s not - does Steve take over at that point? (3:23-ish)
Okay, I’m back and I get it now. It’s Tony’s weird fuzz organ sound that he would use to emulate a guitar. Then they cut to a shot of Tony that’s just not synced; you can see he’s also playing a chord that doesn’t exist in the song at that moment. There’s another moment in this set where Tony uses that sound and it sounds like Steve’s guitar but Steve is clearly playing something different; I think it might be in The Musical Box? Steve and Tony do some overlapping harmonies and it confused the bejeebers out of me for a bit before I realized what was up.
From a dense forest of tall dark pinewood, Mount Ida rises like an island. Within a hidden cave, nymphs had kept a child; Hermaphroditus, son of gods, so afraid of their love. As the dawn creeps up the sky The hunter caught sight of a doe. In desire for conquest, He found himself within a glade he'd not beheld before. Hermaphroditus: "Where are you, my father? Give wisdom to your son" Narrator: Now lost, the boy was guided by the sun" "Then he could go no farther And as his strength began to fail He saw a shimmering lake. A shadow in the dark green depths Disturbed the strange tranquility. Salmacis: "The waters are disturbed Some creature has been stirred" Narrator: "The waters are disturbed Naiad queen Salmacis has been stirred" As he rushed to quench his thirst, A fountain spring appeared before him And as his heated breath brushed through the cool mist, A liquid voice called, "Son of gods, drink from my spring". The water tasted strangely sweet. Behind him the voice called again. He turned and saw her, in a cloak of mist alone And as he gazed, her eyes were filled with the darkness of the lake. Salmacis: "We shall be one We shall be joined as one" Narrator: "She wanted them as one Yet he had no desire to be one" Hermaphroditus: "Away from me cold-blooded woman Your thirst is not mine" Salmacis: "Nothing will cause us to part Hear me, O Gods" Unearthly calm descended from the sky And then their flesh and bones were strangely merged Forever to be joined as one. The creature crawled into the lake. A fading voice was heard: "And I beg, yes I beg that all who touch this spring May share my fate" Salmacis: "We are the one We are the one" Narrator: "The two are now made one Demi-god and nymph are now made one" Both had given everything they had. A lover's dream had been fulfilled at last, Forever still beneath the lake.

J. D. hey did you know, sometimes people can be imaginative and creative without drugs! some people just have the gift, what can i say
J. D. Nope
¡EXTRAORDINARIO,GRÁCIAS POR HABERLO COMPARTIDO POR ESTE MEDIO,EXCELENTE APORTE!
My favorite acid trip concerts of the 70s 😂
MASTERPIECE....phenomenal band!!!
Later the Van Der Graaf Generator one...oh yes, mini~Prog~revival~ The Halcyion days of my youth, Marillion Gigs at the Glasgow Barrowlands Ballroom( no really, don't scoff, punchy live Band in thier hay day). So long ago. Still my favourite Genesis stuff, well, this and the undesputed masterpiece that was "The Lamb lies down on Broadway".📽🎭🎤🎶🥁🎶🎹🎶🎸🎵🎶🌻💜
Not only does Mike Rutherford look gorgeous his bass playing is wonderful!
Hackett is the greatest just saw him live takes you to another dimension!!!
A VERY unique way of playing. Truly like nobody else!!!
I did not know,... there was a "Genesis"..... before Phil Collins.
I am totally blown away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phil is there, on the drums!
He was the drummer.
Sad imo .
@@richybatty234 fair. The only problem is almost 100% of the time this does not guarantee proper paying the bills.
I couldn't believe they played this life in 78 during the mirrors tour.
Old Genesis was just so beautifully weird and magical.
Steve Hackett Is a great ,great guitarist and a great ,great, great person, i love him
This song was played really live in the TV studio, there was no any phonogram. Now it's even hard to believe how old this song is! Of course, the present time neoprog bands create many good songs but anyway the Genesis charisma is considered to be unsurpassable. My opinion.
In fact, I feel that Neo-Prog-Rockers are not getting it.
At 3 minutes, there is a guitar solo, but neither Hacket nor Banks play it, but they are really playing live!
this was pop music, dears
LIstening to them after fourtysix years i still find something new.
These songs are now a classical.
The music is surreal. Exotic and beautiful. So was Peter.❤
Probably my favourite Genesis track. A desert island disc.
2 tracks
When they was great . Long hair - good music !
From a dense forest of tall dark pinewood, Mount Ida rises like an island.
Within a hidden cave, nymphs had kept a child;
Hermaphroditus, son of gods, so afraid of their love.
As the dawn creeps up the sky
The hunter caught sight of a doe.
In desire for conquest,
He found himself within a glade he'd not beheld before.
Hermaphroditus:
"Where are you, my father?
Give wisdom to your son"
Narrator:
Now lost, the boy was guided by the sun"
"Then he could go no farther
And as his strength began to fail
He saw a shimmering lake.
A shadow in the dark green depths
Disturbed the strange tranquility.
Salmacis:
"The waters are disturbed
Some creature has been stirred"
Narrator:
"The waters are disturbed
Naiad queen Salmacis has been stirred"
As he rushed to quench his thirst,
A fountain spring appeared before him
And as his heated breath brushed through the cool mist,
A liquid voice called, "Son of gods, drink from my spring".
The water tasted strangely sweet.
Behind him the voice called again.
He turned and saw her, in a cloak of mist alone
And as he gazed, her eyes were filled with the darkness of the lake.
Salmacis:
"We shall be one
We shall be joined as one"
Narrator:
"She wanted them as one
Yet he had no desire to be one"
Hermaphroditus:
"Away from me cold-blooded woman
Your thirst is not mine"
Salmacis:
"Nothing will cause us to part
Hear me, O Gods"
Unearthly calm descended from the sky
And then their flesh and bones were strangely merged
Forever to be joined as one.
The creature crawled into the lake.
A fading voice was heard:
"And I beg, yes I beg that all who touch this spring
May share my fate"
Salmacis:
"We are the one
We are the one"
Narrator:
"The two are now made one
Demi-god and nymph are now made one"
Both had given everything they had.
A lover's dream had been fulfilled at last,
Forever still beneath the lake.
It’s no wonder they are in the hall of fame with music so deep
This version is absolutely freaking awesome. Peter is really good here
Lord e Banks, os dois maiores gênios do teclado
