Love the song The music conveys the story, the sparse lyrics fit beautifully. Neil's drums are great, and Alex Guitar is amazing. Geddy's bass heavy and fitting.
Alex's solo in this song bespeaks quirkiness, forlornness, and great beauty. His phrasing rises to Shakespearean levels. I believe this to be one of his very best solos. In a 1977 Guitar Player interview, Jimmy Page, when asked if there are any younger guitar players on the scene whom he admires, mentioned one, Alex Lifeson.
Territories is one of my personal favorites from them. That and Middletown Dreams. I almost died when they played both on their Clockwork Angels tour. As soon as each one started, I instantly recognized it and my jaw dropped. Territories is so good, with its guitar flipping between styles. Like so many of their songs, it's different, yet still Rush. Heavy and intense, but melodic and thought-provoking.
The best political lines in any song, ever - "Better the pride that resides, in a citizen of the world, than the pride that divides, when a colorful rag is unfurled." :) It's usually my response to people giving me evil looks when I don't fly an America flag outside of my house on July 4th!
All at once, the clouds are parted. Light streams down in bright unbroken beams. That’s the weather phenomenon known as Jacob’s Ladder. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant song!
Natural Science, which shared space with this song on the album Permanent Waves, is one you should do. Fantastic musicianship and work on that piece. That was around the time these guys hit their popularity stride.
Nice choice! I forgot how heavy and epic this song was. I remember being so stoked when I finally saved up enough money to buy Permanent Waves. Would love to see a reaction to the first two songs on that record! 1. The spirit of the radio, and 2. Free will Both fun happy and rockin songs!
Awesome! I'm so happy you listened to it. I recommended it not that long ago. I knew you'd like it. It's so perfectly put together and so clear and crisp. It's more like a classical production than a typical rock song. The imagery from the lyrics is so good too, describing the fury of nature and the subsequent beauty that inspires.
This studio version has the best guitar sound even at the 2:10 mark, it it screams in a a good way. As a guitarist , I can say the guitar is exquisite.
Lucky you.You have so much fantastic Rush music to discover.🤗 Ghost of a chance Animate Closer to the heart The trees Limelight 2112 ,The story of a boy that finds a guitar and shows it to the priests that rules his wourld in 2112" And many more.
Thanks for the wonderful reactions and commentary! I highly recommend Led Zeppelin's "Rain Song," Styx's "Castle Walls," and Kansas' " Miracles Out of Nowhere."
Very very epic and deep. Yes I'm guessing are the god fathers of progressive rock but Rush are the god fathers of progressive metal. They definentaly paved the way for bands like Queensryche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theatre.
I enjoy your reaction and break down of the songs. Especially on the song The Pass😁 I song that I dubbed "The anthem for all square pegs" is the song Subdivisions. Thanks again and take care
You should pull up “Jacobs Ladder” live on the “R40 tour”. Rush’s final tour in 2015. My husband & I followed them all over the US & Canada with a bunch of our Rush friends. We went to 12 shows on that tour. Wish we could have done more. They will always be the greatest band on the planet to us. You should see & experience Jacobs Ladder from this tour. I have been going to rock concerts since 1973 & I have seen all the great rock bands but nobody compares to “Rush live”!! 😃❤️
Nice to hear you mention Kitaro! I love new age music. Since you seem to have a keen appreciation of fine instrumental music, I have a suggestion that is probably asking a lot for you two. It's an instrumental from 1973 called Tubular Bells, by Mike Oldfield. At the time, it was considered a progressive rock concept album. It's only 2 songs, Part 1 and Part 2. Start with Part 1 and if you like it, you can do part 2 (which is a bit more "unusual" than Part 1). What makes it a truly amazing piece of music, is knowing that he was only 19 when he composed and recorded it, and he played all the instruments himself. If it's too long to do a reaction, I understand, but you should still give it a listen when you have some time. There is no video, but this new version seems to be somewhat official, and has good audio quality... ua-cam.com/video/BfWJqKIxyGc/v-deo.html I recently subscribed, and really hope you can give this a shot, as there are very few reactions to be found for Mike Oldfield. Oh, and I commented on another video of yours, but I'll mention it here too.... can you react to Yebba - My Mind? I promise you won't be disappointed.
The lyrics Neil wrote are based on a Biblical reference to "Jacob's Ladder". As I recall reading in an interview with Neil, he used the reference to suggest an image of the awesome power of nature and as a metaphor for those things that inspire people, whether it be for art or love or spirituality or such like. It was long ago that I read about this so I may be mis-remembering Neil's thoughts but it's definitely an idea he got from the Bible.
Savio, I need a shirt just like yours, I am A Cincinnati Bengals fan. And that is a great shirt. You could make alot of money selling those here in Cincinnati.
Thank you for a reaction to another great RUSH song! If I could recommend another, I would recommend this official video of their great instrumental La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise In Self-Indulgence): ua-cam.com/video/eK1hmDpa8bo/v-deo.html
Dream Theater gets a lot of influence from Rush. The song is about the awakening of the thinking man in the 18th century against tradition and superstition.
I find no need to request a reaction video since you are just reading my mind on every front. This is a great lay back...eyes closed...headphones on type of song.
Never really a fan of this song. It always felt like it could have been a shorter, more concise song than it is. As others have suggested though - Middletown Dreams, Emotion Detector... ya know what... just.. "Power Windows" as an album. Anything and everything off of that album is priceless!
Excellent song but your head movements were distracting because it was out of sync with the music. It reminded me of the Steve Martin movie The Jerk when he was trying to snap his fingers to the beat but had no rhythm.
So many Rush fans on facebook quote this song when a storm blows through their town. We are a predictable lot.

A Rush song I've not seen anyone react to is Territories. It has great music and lyrics and could spark a good conversation/reaction.
Thanks John.
Great song, great lyrics!

@@surfeit5910 One of my favorite Rush lyrics, period. Right up there with the Witch Hunt Lyrics.
All at once, the clouds are parted. Light streams down in bright unbroken beams. That’s the weather phenomenon known as Jacob’s Ladder. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant song!
Thanks for letting us know about the meaning of the title.
Rush is Rock n Roll for the Cerebral mind.. Love your reactions. look into Natural Science by Rush
Thank you. I'm a huge Rush fan and Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorites. Great reaction. Made my day that you appreciate such a great band. Good day.
although this is not an official rush video, someone did a great job of synchronizing the stormy weather imagery with the music
I agree i was mesmerized
Enjoy your discovery of Rush...I love them!
Natural Science, which shared space with this song on the album Permanent Waves, is one you should do. Fantastic musicianship and work on that piece. That was around the time these guys hit their popularity stride.
Yes I totally agree. Even more epic, deeper, and progressive than this one.
Nice choice! I forgot how heavy and epic this song was. I remember being so stoked when I finally saved up enough money to buy Permanent Waves. Would love to see a reaction to the first two songs on that record! 1. The spirit of the radio, and 2. Free will

Great reaction! Give the song “The Camera Eye” a shot. A longer song that compares New York City and London.
AWESOME Just found you! Love hearing RUSH reactions!!!! ALSO.... NF :)
Geddy said Jacobs Ladder referes to the beams of light that fall down through a hole in the clouds after a storm. Its like a ladder up to the heavens

Nameste friends. You should listen to The Trees. It's an AMAZING song about social inequality.
Funny I thought it was about a 🌲....🤔

Please react to Witch Hunt. Great food for thought and I don't believe I've seen anyone react to it.

Great review i would like to recommend La Villa Strangiato by Rush, perhaps the best instrumental ever, it is. in my opinion anyway thank you

A rock band writing songs about weather phenomena. What has the world come to?! :)
Dream Theater gets a lot of influence from Rush. The song is about the awakening of the thinking man in the 18th century against tradition and superstition.
brilliant music aside the lady is beautiful

"Focus on the music" -- good advice!
Yes, with RUSH it's all about the MUSIC.

Heh, 13/8?
This video has not much to do with this song !
