I love this. The MPC is almost always showcased as a device for hiphop. That's fine, but it's so refreshing to see other genres of music being rocked. All of these are fire, but what really hooked me was the one on the 13min mark. Honestly, I'd love to see the day the headline before the video reads "Gabe Miller Makes Gabber Techno on the MPC One"
@@aikighost thanks for the info, i’ve never seen as many house producers as hip hop folks in public field, so this is general stereotype that was supported by mass media. It’s always interesting to see studio gear and how people use it, what keeps them inspired.

I bought an SD card about 2 years ago that had about 100 some expansions on it, and I've been going through them drum kits for a very long time, and I still use them, but like you said, I would rather use my own synth sounds from hardware. When I'm on the MPC One, the very thing that is lacking is the plugins and synth sounds. To me, it is the one thing that is lacking, but there are still usable sounds. I'm a hardware guy like you. I love hardware gear and how it sounds. Software just doesn't fulfill my musical need, especially in the plugin and synth expansion area, but some of them get it done. It's just a shame that software doesn't compare to hardware dynamically to my ears, but I still use it. I just really wish that the MPC One was a unit with hardware sounds already installed, but it's not. I truly think and believe that the best route Akai can go is to make their hardware units with hardware sounds. If they would get into their own sound design, and put them sounds into their units, they would do much better and be a more solid company. That's just my take on it. It's so nice to see someone using DAWless hardware to make something other than HipHop/BoomBap/Ambient - you are definitely filling a void in the UA-cam hardware community. Psshht techno is a broad term forget the subgenre war I mean most modern "hard techno" sounds like old-school hardstyle and has only grown into its own identity recently I feel and other forms of techno been sounding like millennium hard trance It's all music and all sounds I enjoy which is the main thing Great to see some techno made on the MPC one regardless lol

Glad to have stumbled upon this to see you make it work. would love to see you dive more into the rumble and industrial techno with the mpc, my hardware is dying to learn the genre. thanks for your contribution to all of us.
Nice music! Not concerned about fitting all songs into a genre perfectly. We take elements from different types and as long as its fun to listen to, it works for me!

There is a lot of good stock kits, sounds, plugins and decent expansions on the mpc... but I always feel embracing the sampling gets me my most inspired and interesting results (for any genre). I sample my mc 707 and a few synths for almost every project I do. When I am feeling 'crazy' (lol) I sample to an old tascam and then from there into the mpc. It probably adds very little, but it's fun...lol.
Brother, I don't know how to distinguish between genres in the first place, so whatever you want to call it is just fine! I can guess this is not country or heavy metal, but that's about as fine a point as I'm confident putting on it. Nice doots.
More MPC content I approve 😀 I’ve managed to switch mine on register and update it and I’m in the process of loading up as much free content as I can while watching multiple how to videos. I’m focusing on finishing the last four tracks I’ve done with the Mac101 and also have a broken ankle which is somewhat limiting, but once these are done I’m going to immerse myself in MPC one 🤪 My favourite techno at the moment is After Cooking he’s on Spotify and you tube is amazing and mores the point he’s live looping kitchen equipment and plastic pipes to get his sounds. As soon as I’m mobile again I’m getting some plastic pipe to sample for a bass sound. As for the purity of the genre, personally I don’t care whether the music is true to a genre ( and you’ll know if you listen to my stuff ( on Spotify and all other streaming services btw hint hint) but wether it sounds good or not. I do really like the tracks on the video by the way.
How does this compare to a Maschine 3? I bought one that can't be used so I have to find something else. This looks like its pretty close, but I don't have a lot of experience to make a good comparison.

For the last year or more I tried to figure out what differentiates the different styles of house and techno and I am still lost. Haha. I liked every beat in this, though. Regardless, I love seeing the MPC outside of a hip-hop context since I make pretty much all synth based music and this gives me ideas as to how to blend synth and resampling to push past the plugin limits. I'm in almost a year long limbo between saving up for a Push 3 or getting a used MPC One. Might just need both haha.
Looking forward to this video! I own an RD-9 (909 clone) that I bought shortly before getting my first MPC. The RD-9 also seems like fun, but it stays on the shelf since the MPC is obviously much more powerful. BUT a big part of me wonders if the RD-9 is the way to go for techno.
I imagine a drum machine by itself isn't necessarily enough, but I'm sure you'd be able to have a great time either syncing them, or sampling the RD-9 into the MPC
I often start out with sequences and patterns on other gear and then sample loops into my MPC or sample the sounds and recreate the patterns. The jam I'm currently prepping started out on Volca Bass and Volca Sample.
Sync your RD 9. I used to have an actual 909. Got rid of it cheap in the late 90s sadly. It's most definitely the definitive sound of hard 90s techno. Just saw orbital perform a couple months ago and they were hitting hard with the 909.
Thanks for all the replies! Another big part of this for me is just how fun or inspiring it is to work with the interface of something like the 909 versus the interface of the MPC. The MPC has a step sequencer, but it’s a bit quirky. Works great and allows for a ton of things to do with the parameters. of course, if you’re into finger drumming, the MPC is the way to go.
All you need is a 909 and 303 (clone 😂), that's how I got started. Then picked up the MPC cuz I needed "more sounds". Really liked what it did, but not the workflow, so eventually ended up with the Force. That just clicks with my brain, MPC-ish UI, with lots of other goodies. Def recommend adding in a sampler of some sort, but in the end, it's really whatever device works for your workflow best... that and having fun 😁

Hey btw, Finally a topic I can repay you with. A tip! 🙃I worked as a Tattoo artist and we had Gentian Violet for stencils and piercing marking so I eventually discovered the stuff can make real good hair dye. Whether you make it or buy it prefab you still should not expose yourself to anything more than you have to cuz most dyes are not safe to injest. Read up on it , THAT SAID, people been using it since the 1700s , theynused to dip babys in it if they had skin infections and the whole baby would be purple, you cannot see em cuz the photos were black and white. Anyhow, I use head n shoulders conditioner and a tube of dark blue hair dye and about 30 drops of gentian , mix it carefully and use the same as Manic Panic or what not. My hair starts out like a deeeep bluish purple and fades out to light blue. I don’t use any hair products that contain alcohol cuz these dyes are cut by alcohol which means you should have a bottle nearby. Also , application of oily lotion will prevent your skin AND hair from taking up dye so it can be used for that…..

Hip Hop producers forced that. It was initially marketed to rock bands. Hip Hop/house producers pushed its limits and made it a household name.
I agree, it’s nice to see something like house or trance made on device that is stereotypically bound to hip hop.

I make everything on the MPC One, not just hip hop genre music. All music can be made on this unit, especially if you get the expansion kits.
That, and these days I ignore expansion kits and just load in my own sounds whenever I want to try a new style.

progressive and trance-like grooves, still sounds interesting. New Akai devices get more multi-genre reputation than older models.

I finally just went for Blackbox. It's still worth it. Often, the best techno, has the least sound.
I'm not sold on the workflow, but I've heard some cool stuff coming from the Blackbox

There are no genres, just music.
I like runnung my mpc in controller mode just so I don't have to worry about resources (and so it can use midi and asio)
