So kind of you Jordan Bannantine! A true gentleman! Given all that I do to give back to the guitar community - was this really the best you can come up with? Class act my friend!
You're right! There is no real need to chance the resistors, becouse the difference is hard to be heard! Even with a clone Behringer TO 800 that cost me 22 euros new, is dead on with ts 808! A cheap plastic thing!
Mr Tone King, your comments were spot on. The 808 is creamy with over tones, but high gain leaves less options. The 9DX gives those higher gain amp options more to offer, where the 9 is some where in between. Thanks for the review and rock on :)
Just an FYI. Stevie Ray Vaughn started using the TS-808, moved to the TS-9 and then used the TS-10 which can me seen in his final performance at Austin City Limits in 1989.
Man, I like all three of these. I own a ts808ri and it turns my amp into a fire breather. I wanted to also say that Tone King is one of my favorite pedal reviewers, thanks for all the help Tone King!
They're overdrive pedals in which they're meant to push a tube amp to breakup more. The 808 and the TS9 do scoop the mids quite a bit. The TS9DX, however, has this problem fixed with the +, HOT, and Turbo modes. Those mods have more bottom end and top end, but also increase your volume quite a bit.
Purely for a solo boost and mabe being used as a slight overdrive I like the TS808. I think it has more character when he's playing those short little licks and got it on over the distortion.
I have a TS-9DX and it's a nice enough overdrive. Good for some of the sleazy 80s rock and metal. But the extra modes offered, while fun to try out, are virtually unusable. Tone King's right, the added bass makes them mushy sounding and you get lost in the mix if you try using them in a band context.
The Tone King rocks...period. People who leave coments about his playing or this and that are insecure. Keep doing what your doing man we really do appreciate it.
I'm really not insecure, and I think his tone and playing are garbage. Not such a big deal, except he calls himself "The Tone King" so extra scrutiny is justified.
Okay, lets just make this easy for people that dont wanna watch 8 minutes of this-- they all have the same exact tone. The Turbo Tube Screamer (one in the middle) just has a few hotter gainier variations at hand at your disposal. Use em to had grit to your tone, drive your cicutry and your tubes. Play, have fun, and enjoy! (I watched the video though just so everyone is clear. Nice video Tone King! Im a fan.)
Hello, i liked pretty much the TS808. Have a more defined sound, especially in clean channel. In a overdrive channel he doesn´t compress too much the sound, giving to him clarity and detail.
sounds like the TS9DX mode settings give you more bottom end as you move from TS9 to turbo. I bet this would make for some face melting crunch when used with the dirty setting on any amp.
My self I like the ts9 but the ts9dx on the plus setting seem really nice. But in the end it comes down to personal taste. You really can't go wrong with a tube screamer no matter which one you prefer.
If the amp doesn't have an FX loop then you can't really drive it if you run other effects like reverb or delay in front of it. Also, it helps to have an extra overdrive for boost/tone stacking options (especially if you are like me and enjoy a low gain overdrive on all the time and boosting later for more oomph)!
I like the DX. But you know what would be cool! If they made one that would do the hot setting like the DX but had a switch where you could switch from TS9 to 808 sound that would be killer.......
Good demo bro. Thanks. I own a TS808 and used to own a TS9DX. I dig my 808 a lot but wanting more out of a TS pedal. The DX I felt wasn't for me though. Well done bro. Keep rockin!
love the vids. I personally have a TS 9 and an older ts 10. I think for my playing which is in the blues and country market I find that the TS 9 adds a nice over the edge sus when needed. The more I play though the more I am beginning to appreciate a clean guitar and knowledgeable playing. You apparently have the same ears as I have, as you expressed everything that I was thinking.
I prefer the tsn for its versatility and superior boost, but all of them sound good. Also like the choice of riffs, good dynamic and consistency to hear the pedal respond
ever line it up to the Analogman King of Tone pedal? I just bought a used TS9 today, I watched a demo video months back of 15 different tone pedals. The Tube Screamer came 2nd to that pedal, but the King of Tone also costs about 4 times as much. I'll have to look up this JD9. Cheers
If you are looking for a tube screamer that has it all in one box, Monster Tone, Unreal Sustain, and versitility, you need to check out a Whizzer Hot Screamer. You won't regret it!
People will argue this but the TS-9 mode in the turbo pedal is the same circuit as the 808 and the standard TS-9....the difference you hear,if any,is coming from the eyes...and the turbo is made in Japan if that matters.
Been trying to work out which tube screamer to buy for days! After reading your comment and watching the sweetwater video with Josh scott on the bonsai, i ordered it straight after! 😅 looks wild!
I bought a used TS9 tonight for $65, but before I bought it at the music store, set it up against the TS808, and I didn't like the tone of the 808, just like in this video. It almost seems muffled. I liked the DX demo but considering that was $150 new, it was an easy decision. I think for larger volume shows I may look at the DX down the road so I can dial the tone down a little more, but for a small club now with no sound man, I want more of a cut in the tone when I dig in.
I've had my TS9 for over 16 years. Still happy with it, still haven't found a pedal that could replace it (although the new JD9 is looking pretty good).
They all do sound nice to me. I think the "creamier" description of the 808 may be do to less high frequency emphasis so if you have a 9 or 9DX perhaps you could roll the tone knob on your guitar off a little to do the same thing (?). I recently picked up a 9DX since it has the 9 tone position and provides you with three additional options, plus (since I buy used) the 9DX was actually less expensive than the 9 on Ebay I guess since the reputation of the 9 causes it to be more desirable and the 9DX is less well-known. All in all three very nice pedals though!
I think you need a "recording king" to help the audio quality. That amazing amount of beautiful technology deserves a good recording. You'd be the king.
wow I'm not a fan of tube-screamers...always thought the Fulltone OCD killed em, but thought the TS-808 was worth a try...but after hearing this demo, to my ears, the regular ol' TS9 sounded the best, and did great when boosting an already dirty amp..great demo, TK may have to take a shot at a TS9.
I still have my dads old tube screamer from back in the day. I think the 70's. The battery compartments corroded. But it still works plugged into a power jack. My favorite pedal.
They are all good overdrive pedals. It just depends what you are looking for. The TS - 808 is very ragged around the edges, very vintage. I thought the DS9 DX was cleaner and more articulate at these settings and the DS9 only very slightly less so. But, change up your settings and who knows. They could all mimic each other. Also depends on the overdrive or clean channel on the amp you intend to use it with.
I have a ts dx and find I usually just keep it set to original mode. Once in a while through a clean amp with a strat I'll kick it up one mode to fatten it up a bit. Any more than one mode up is too woofy for me. I luv the sound of the ts-808. A little more complex and less of that midrange vowel like sound. If your looking to scoop mids out a little more I would go woth the mxr zack wylde od.
I've always preferred the standard TS9 - and after this excellent comparison video, I still do. A tube screamer makes nearly EVERY amp sound better... I use it all the time with amp tones in my GSP1101 as well.
Good old Crispy Cream TS808 tone for me. Perfect for for getting a creamy blues bite and provides about as much extra kick as I need on top of a dirty channel. Thanks for demoing more Ibanez gear.
I'm in a progressive deathcore band and I just bought a ts808 and a ts5. I keep the TS5 on all the time to tighten up my amp's distortion and I use the ts808 as a clean boost for soloing. Works so good and sounds awesome.
Thanks for saving me a bunch of money. I thought I wanted one of these, but none of them are my cup of tea. Guess I'm back to the drawing board on what Overdrive pedal I want.
Thanks for the demo. What's your opinion of the Keeley modded TS-808's? I do play blues, for the most part, and want something that will break it up nicely, but not distort the shit out of it. Know what I mean? Thanks.
yeah, they have their differences, but they all have that signature creaminess that comes with tubescreamers. being a traditionalist, im buying an 808 for my board
The TS808 really sounds cool, but I still prefer the distortion of a real tube amp. I've got the Marshall 4203 Artist, Marshall JTM30, Marshall JCM900 SL-X, and a Marshall Power Brake. Sounds awesome.
I think the TS9DX would be best for me. Usually, OD pedals suck out some of the bass of the guitar tone, and I think the DX in the higher-gain modes would add some of that bass back.
How a about the TS7, from the tone lock series? Does that sound like total crap? If I had the money, I'd get the TS808, but that cost's something like 180 $, and the TS7 40 $. So should I get the TS7 or a Boss SD 1, or just save up some money to get a TS808?
I have a TS9 and idont know maybe im using it wrong but i cant seem to get the sound i want from it...TS9 alone i mean when i use in conjunction of an amp or other pedal it helps as a boost
Should i buy a TS to make my Peavey Valve King Head more Metal, or should i just save money for a new amp? It sound like a dirty Marshall, but not like a straigt-throught "Metalhead" , can i get a better Rythm sound with using a TS, or any other Pedal, f.e. the BOSS Metalcore?
For all those smart-ass idiots who like to comment all the time and mock the tone king, how can you even look at yourselves in the mirror i wonder, or does it make you fill good to trample on others, unlike you this guy is trying to give back to the guitar community, and help new and/or any guitarists choose their gear, i c'mon how low can you get, besides living comment and then disabling the reply option (for people to reply to you, that is..) is sign of cowardice, its just like punching and then running away... Rock on Tone King ,greetings from Israel.

So kind of you Jordan Bannantine! A true gentleman! Given all that I do to give back to the guitar community - was this really the best you can come up with? Class act my friend!
If you are all about being practical just buy the TS-9DX and flip a couple of new resistors in it and you have an 808 with turbo.
You're right!
There is no real need to chance the resistors, becouse the difference is hard to be heard!
Even with a clone Behringer TO 800 that cost me 22 euros new, is dead on with ts 808!

This video helped me make the final decision on the TS 808. Thanks Tone King. I appreciate your work on all this gear. I play it through my V3 too.
Just an FYI. Stevie Ray Vaughn started using the TS-808, moved to the TS-9 and then used the TS-10 which can me seen in his final performance at Austin City Limits in 1989.
personally i love the ts9... rally clean tone in comparison to the others! and im all about that clean crisp tone :)
Exactly!

TS-808 has no equal, simply the greatest overdrive pedal out there.
The Tone King rocks...period. People who leave coments about his playing or this and that are insecure. Keep doing what your doing man we really do appreciate it.
Wile e. Coyote I APPRECIATE THE SIMPLICITY OF WALKING THROUGH EACH PEDAL.THERES ALWAYS ONE IDIOT LIVING IN THE NEGATIVE WORLD.

I use the TS9DX (on 'hot' mode) as a boost for my Peavey Transtube, on the lead channel. Makes the harmonics jump n scream.
Beautiful demo. Thank you very much. Looks like I'll be picking up the TS808.
My self I like the ts9 but the ts9dx on the plus setting seem really nice. But in the end it comes down to personal taste. You really can't go wrong with a tube screamer no matter which one you prefer.
Amazing contribution to gear heads.
You have a profound respect for all things guitar.
Thanks for letting me get a glimpse.
It's a hard one... still the TS808 would be my pick !
Great Shootout man
Cheers
I use two Tube Screamers. One for a clean boost into the second for overdrive into a clean amp. Thats the only pedals I need on any gig.

The one on the right seems brighter. Hard to tell which one sounds better from the vid?
love the vids. I personally have a TS 9 and an older ts 10. I think for my playing which is in the

If you're here in 2020 still wondering which TS to buy, the JHS Bonsai is the pedal to own. No other TS can touch it. Stay spicy!
Been trying to work out which tube screamer to buy for days! After reading your comment and watching the sweetwater video with Josh scott on the bonsai, i ordered it straight after! 😅 looks wild!
@@ChrisFehnNumber30 Cool. Come back after you've spent some time with it and let us know what you think.
I prefer the tone of the 808 but the ts9dx is interesting for it's different modes
cool demo! If you want a unreal tube screamer check out the Whizzer Hot Screamer Demo and all the Whizzer pedals. You will be glad you did!

very nice
Great stuff man. You know how to give an in depth comparison that is also very informative.
DX Seems to be very versatile. i'm all for that. thanks for the review!

Which one would be better for stoner-rock and blues? The TS9DX sounds a little too trebly, IMO.
Good old Crispy Cream TS808 tone for me. Perfect for for getting a creamy blues bite and provides about as much extra kick as I need on top of a dirty channel. Thanks for demoing more Ibanez gear.

I think I’m gonna go with the 808. To me it sounds more of like a vintage Stevie Ray Vaughan drive tone
That's the one he used mostly. The other ones (TS10,TS9) came when he wore the 808 out.
Thanks for saving me a bunch of money. I thought I wanted one of these, but none of them are my cup of tea. Guess I'm back to the drawing board on what Overdrive pedal I want.
very helpful demo, I like the TS9 and the ts808, not so sure that the 808 is really worth the extra money, anybody have an opinion?
Hi. What pedal is better for ac\dc songs the TS9 or the TS808 ? Thanks.
Thanks for the demo. What's your opinion of the Keeley modded TS-808's? I do play blues, for the most part, and want something that will break it up nicely, but not distort the shit out of it. Know what I mean?
Thanks.
what exactly does a tube screamer pedal do? would it give the effect of a tube amp when just using a solid state amp?
Which pedal is best for high gain distortion like pantera, and justice for all, master of puppets? I just want a really good metal tone.
yeah, they have their differences, but they all have that signature creaminess that comes with tubescreamers. being a traditionalist, im buying an 808 for my board

when i use in conjunction of an amp or other pedal it helps as a boost
he used ts808 and ts9 and he was seen using a ts10 but he mostly used the ts9 if you look at pictures of his pedals
TS9DX has i significant volume boost and it controls how much volume you put on it
I'd get both the 808 and 9. So much versatility in there.
definitely the TS9DX. been wanting to get that one actually. informative video! thank you!
Can you use the TS9 to emulate a tone pot? I've seen loads of guitarists that use guitars with no tone pot and always have a TS9
TSDX9 for me.
Which would you recommend to run in front of an Orange Rockerverb?
i still love my TS 808, i play indie rock with that.. and still awesome

My very first pedal was a TS-9 Modded by Keeley. Has a Blue LED that could be used as a warning beacon it's so bright. To my ears it sounds geat! I know many people get a Tube Screamer and a strat and expect to sound just like SRV. Stevie would sound like Stevie through a LP. LOL Great video. There is that one Screamer that will cost you over $300. Not for me.
the ts9dx is supposed to sound like ts9 but with more but i found that very untrue when putting them side by side on same settings
the regular ts9 is superior for what im doing
Awesome shootout, I had the tubescreamer tone lock , what about that one ? I thought it was great
I like the DX for the added gain. There just doesn't seem to be much of a difference between 808 and TS9 to me
The ts9dx was pretty cool very similar to the ts9 with more voicing features.
I liked the TS-9 best, sweet and creamy to me, and also rich with tone
would the TS9DX be a good pedal to boost a marshall plexi for a solo?
Which would you reccomend for metal? The TS9?
the comments section is for more than just positive feedback. he can watch and comment negatively, you know. incidentally, i like your videos - so keep up the good work :)
What would be a good pedal to enhance the kick of the 808? Would a Green Rhino work well for that?
i just got a Marshall mode four, its not a all tube amp but it has a 2 ECC83 tube pre-amp, would i get the same effect out of the ts9 or would i loose tone?
ts808 was my favourite, ever thought about comparing it to the maxon od808, would love to see you do that vid.
I have the TS808 and TS9 but only because I purchased the TS9 before knowing about the TS808. The TS808 is much warmer sounding and doesn't muddy up the tone. It's the best distortion pedal I've heard IMO. How SRV and Santana have such great tone and use the TS9 is a mystery to me :/
SRV and Santana could make a homemade out-of-tune piece of crap with 2 broken strings sound like a chorus of singing angels.
I don't know about that. I Saw Santana 2x... First he sounded great, played with his PRs and 2nd time he played the whole concert with strats and sounded terrible.
nsc217 Thats called TS9 MOD :)
Great demo, I think for me it would be the TS9, just to give it that singing quality with my Marshall
This would've been the perfect comparison (for me anyway) if he'd had that missing evolutionary link, the '84 Ibanez ST9 Super Tube Screamer as well.
The Tone King rules!!! Love his Carvin! Rock on man!
Hey you should do a video running overdrive pedals/tube screamers through a peavey 6505(if you can get your hands on one)
@lmsjr where the distortion comes from?it's just amazing! and with the boost it's even more amazing
IMO TS9DX is the winner all the way. Cheers!
TS9 all the way... I actually preferred the DX in front of the carvin, but I normally wouldn't push a high gain amp like that with a TS anyways, I find those amps usually stand on their own. Now if it were pushing that marshall, I have a feeling the TS9 would blow the others away...
I liked the ts808 for distortion because it sounded really deep and muffled and yea I agree that it got mushy when the dx was cranked up
Helpful vid, man. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
TS9DX
I liked the TS808. It sounded the best on the clean channel and was creamy.
What pedal out of these three in your opinion is suited to blues and hard rock?
