Just a FYI, if you watch Some Kind of Monster, (specifically the scene where Lars is recording Sweet Amber and talking about Metallica) you can see he recorded St. Anger with a 14"x5.5" blue Ludwig Vistalite.
@warlord4811 yes to be correct he said in this video hes been using the snare for a decade meaning since 2001 which was the beginning of st. anger, but before he was using my favorite snare for him the bell brass signature snare soo that might help.
@polishskaterdude32 he used 3 drum kits on st. anger... one with a bell brass, one with the second version of that snare in the video(it's actually the first... but it's now "degraded":P) and one acrylic snare!...
Hey Lars, it's nice to know your doing really, really well. You're progressing in learning the English language. Keep up the great work. Maybe next time you have an interview, you'll add a few more words to your vocabulary.
@nando88 Thanks.. I´ve only been aware of that fact since about ´91:) Just pointing out that you´d think he could have pulled off that promo vid without his tech by his side, just like every one else that ever got a signature snare.. No flaming intended, I respect Lars, some of his work is legendary, it´s just a little lame for him to say: this is my signature snare.. BTW what´s it called and what´s the shell size?
That´s a bad ass looking snare!! I could definately see myself using it live although it would probably have its limits in the studio.. But Lars could definately have prepared enough to know the name and specs of it... Gotta wonder if he brings Flemming along as a "sideshow" character or he really needs him to give info about the drum..
@FRISOtto you couldn't be more wrong. For one, he had only been playing drums properly hardly for 6 months when Metallica was formed so he hardly have time to hone up his skills. He did though over the year by the late 80's. Yet during the MOP tour he wasn't what Dave Lombardo could do. He is a much improved drummer now, with so much better chops, really progressive, he knows where to accent what and plays almost like a lead guitarist. He's one of the best drummers, get over it.
Subtitles 00:53 - 01:02 Lars: Tell us about this snaredrum. What do you think about it? Flemming: I think it looks pretty awesome. Like really. Lars: Ok, cool.
@mattlovesdrums25 Hehe.. you must not have read my post properly.. I´m not asking the specs of the snare, just pointing out that Lars doesn´t know them himself.. I happen to be the biggest TAMA geek on the planet so I know more about their drums than is healty for me, I think..
Sorry, i guess i did misread it. I'm a huge Tama fan as well and I'm hoping to get a StarClassic sometime soon, I've got a crappy Rockstar right now :(
I'm not disagreeing with you, I just want to let you know that companies, most of the time, don't sponsor someone based on their talent. They sponsor them based on how well the artist can get the companies name out there. Why do you think there's so many good bands out there that aren't heavily sponsored? They haven't gone mainstream yet. And whether or not he has his own signature sticks isn't really that big of a deal, lots of artists have their own.
There are two kinds of Lars haters: The ones who think he's genuinely a moron and don't realise he is taking-the-piss and then the ones who see that he doesn't give a fuck and get really upset about. But face the facts guys - he plays drums however he wants and he has been quite successful doing it...so why wouldn't he give a fuck? All the Lars haters should get off the internet and start doing something with their lives....like me...right now
Ye exactly, I think that his style of playing totally fits into Metallica's sound and his snare sounds awesome, because it's deep and has a powerful sound.
People choose to listen to Lars...it's not his fault that the music he makes is better to most people than those other drummers...and if they want to learn from someone they can pay for lessons, or listen to other drummers...Lars is popular because of Metallica, not because he's a drumming virtuoso...if you want to hear great music from all aspects, Metallica is a great band to listen to...if you want to listen to decent music with great drumming go listen to Slayer or Rush.......
steel and titanium snares are just volume and no sound quality, wood really have no volume nor overwhelming sound quality, but they can be managleable, brass is the best way to go, but they arent common and difficult to find
capnkdawg "Lol...ok...I've seen those videos...I've seen Portnoy and Peart make similar mistakes" Link please. Wanna see. "...but when they do it they don't suck right?" You know, the stuff THEY play mostly consists of pretty complicated beats with crazy, changing time signatures, unlike Lars' stuff, which for the most part consists out of very basic boom-chuck beats in 4/4 time. Portnoy or Peart making mistakes at some point is kinda inevitable, especially live and considering how complex their material is. Plus, their fuck-ups aren't as obvious and in your face as Lars' fuck-ups.
Look man, I'm not saying Lars is better than those guys, and you're right, their stuff is usually more complex...but everyone fucks up...that's my point. Lars doesn't suck like everyone thinks, and 99% of people who bitch about his playing can't play half of his stuff.
This snare completely changed Metallica's sound though? St. Anger was when I noticed it... didn't sound right at all. It's an awesome drum, but... not what I'd want in Metallica.
Lol...ok...I've seen those videos...I've seen Portnoy and Peart make similar mistakes...but when they do it they don't suck right? Look man, I'm not defending anyone, I'm simply stating the truth...Idk whether you're some Megadeth fanboy, or just hate Lars because someone else said it so you decided you wanted to believe it or what...but the facts are facts...his skill is above 65% of drummers out there
First off...no to the beatboxing....and second, Lars improvises half of the time anyways...Look, I never said he was a virtuoso, but he's nothing short of a very good drummer...And to me I think he gets shit on way too much. Not to mention his composing and song arrangements are much better than most drummers, which is actually part of being a musician...he's a good drummer, but a great musician, and I think people need to remember that
I am talking about videos when they make new songs and he has trouble keeping a rythm most drummer that you see on youtube that do drum covers of a song with improvisation nail them. But lars cant do that he is too constrained with musical theory it needs to be a specific way. Still those 35% of drummers are looked down upon while other people look up to Lars which is shame I would rather have a good teacher then average popular one.
Just a FYI, if you watch Some Kind of Monster, (specifically the scene where Lars is recording Sweet Amber and talking about Metallica) you can see he recorded St. Anger with a 14"x5.5" blue Ludwig Vistalite.
Thank you for your response :)

for me he's a good comedian actually
gotta love this video!! fucking amazing!
Is there are sound difference between a diamond plate and a regular steel snare?
can anyone tell me from when and where that performance of puppets at 3:00 is?
@polishskaterdude32 yeah, hes been using it since 1996, but i might be wrong.
@polishskaterdude32 he used 3 drum kits on st. anger... one with a bell brass, one with the second version of that snare in the video(it's actually the first... but it's now "degraded":P) and one acrylic snare!...

@HOPExxDRUMMER yes, buts hes been using bell brass since '96
@nando88

Yes, he have used that snare since 99 era.
Lars for me its like a fucking hero.
That´s a bad ass looking snare!! I could definately see myself using it live although it would probably have its limits in the studio.. I think it sounds as the performance at seoul. You could go watch it. I'm not totally sure, but it could be it.

Just like Death Magnetic...

Speaking of Fleming...where's Fleming Rasmussen? You know, that guy who produced Metallica albums when they were still good?
He said its so loud he cant hear what hes playing. Explains St. Anger
LARS! I'm not buying a $700 dollar that sounds like ST. ANGER!

This snare completely changed Metallica's sound though?
St. Anger was when I noticed it... didn't sound right at all. It's an awesome drum, but... not what I'd want in Metallica.
