Fallout: New Vegas is known for its deep character customization options, and the trait system is a major part of that. Traits are unique character features that can both help and hinder the player, and choosing the right traits can make all the difference in your journey through the wasteland. But with so many traits to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones are worth taking and which ones are best left alone.
That's where we come in! We've gone through each trait with a fine-toothed comb, evaluating the pros and cons of each one and comparing them to the others. We'll be taking into account factors such as overall impact on gameplay, compatibility with other traits, and overall utility. And at the end of the video, we'll be revealing our final ranking of the best and worst traits in Fallout: New Vegas.
So, whether you're looking to optimize your build, or just curious about the different traits available in the game, make sure to check out our video on the Fallout: New Vegas trait tier list. We'll help you make informed decisions and guide you towards creating a truly unique character in the wasteland. I will also be having examples of each of traits for builds that you might want to use through out your adventures.

The non-combat skills are almost universally good on any build and you typically don't need more than one or two combat skills, depending on your build.

Good Natured is basically just a straight upgrade. As it costs skill points to level up each weapon I doubt most players in a given run will ever prioritise spending points on more than two weapon skills. So in actuality it's more like a -10 weapons vs +25 utility, a net +15, equivalent to a free level up with 10 INT. Plus that +25 utility are in skills the player will likely use anyway: repair, science, speech, etc.

One thing worth mentioning is that, in theory, Fast Shot (weapons fire 20% faster, but are 20% less accurate) and Trigger Discipline (weapons are 20% more accurate, but fire 20% more slowly) seem to cancel each other out. But with how the game engine handles the calculations, taking both Traits will make both the fire rate *AND* accuracy of basically all weapons be 96%. The game calculate the benefit and multiplies it with the penalty, so 1.2 * 0.8 = 0.96.

Another interesting point is weapons that fire more then then one shot per trigger pull aka mostly automatics are not effected by attack speed modifiers so fast shot does not increase automatic weapon dps but will make them less accurate. On the other hand trigger discipline also means it won't decrease automatic weapon dps but will decrease spread by 20%.
So fast shot is a straight up 20% dps boost on semi autos and no real impact on most weapons with under a 0.2 spread meanwhile trigger discipline is always an accuracy boost for automatics with no downsides.

Something to keep in mind with Good Natured is that, even if you're planning on doing a lot of fighting, all of the skills it gives bonuses to will be useful to some degree or another, while of the skills it detracts from, you're only going to care about one, maybe two of them. No matter what your build is, you're almost guaranteed to come out ahead in skill points.

Good natured is good on any character who wants to specialise their combat. + 25 points to skills useful to out of combat play for -5 points to the one combat skill you are using (and -20 points to combat skills you are not going to use) is a very good trade. Plus you have TAG on the combat skill you set back so you cover the loss.

Small Frame perk is not as bad as you think, it can be mitigated and even reverted to a +25% reduction damage to limbs by taking the Adamentium Skeleton perk (but Adamentium is level 14 so it's quite the longue route before getting it) OR you can just play the game normally, get crippeled more often and the 50th time you get crippeled you automatically get the Tough Guy challenge perk, which gives you a +20% limb damage reduction, so you're left with +1 AGILITY and +5% damage to limbs, without spending skill point on Adamentium Skeleton, and +45% limb damage reduction with Adamentium Skeleton, that's what I call a better than average perk, you get a little disadvantaged at the beginning of the game but the issue will eventually solve itself and you can even overcome it, all that for one Agiliy point, which is quite good because it affects reload time

But as I explained it, you can still plan to mitigate it's drawback even further than just by playing the game, it's not an obligation, not like it's mendatory or something but it's possible to plan that, in addition, medbags are quite common, you can buy, found and craft them fairly easily, and if you're in survival and want to keep them for emergency situations you can also sleep or see a doctor which will fix every broken limbs and makes you full health for 50 caps... this trait could be S tier depending of what you've planned for your playthrough or A tier if you take it randomly

Yes, they can be bad for some builds, but the point is that when you're planning builds, you CAN find characters these are huge for, and being that little boost that makes a build feel amazing is what counts in New Vegas for being good or not. A good example for Trigger Discipline - which I agree isn't as good as Fast Shot - is that This Machine doesn't have great accuracy but already has solid firing speed, and is therefore far better in the hands of someone with Trigger Discipline. Even if you wanted to argue "MOST of the time it's bad," it's not about most, it's about if there are viable build setups that utilize them and how crucial/useful the trait in question is to that build.

-Kamikaze is D tier, the downside never outweights the upside, it's a straight up nerf, specially because you never need those extra 10 AP and they only come into effect when you start a fight since you rarely use them all or wait to recharge them all, while the downside is up anytime you take dmg.
-I think Fast shot is B tier. It's really good for all reason you mention, but is really frustrating to lose that almost perfect accuracy on scoped guns or that extra on other semiautomatic weapons. It feels like they dont work properly the way they miss.
-The trick to good natured is that you gain "useful" stats, things that have checks. And lose things that dont have many checks but impact fights. I'd say it's B because it's really good early, probably the most impactful of the list pre level 10.
-Hoarder is C i'd say, in between pure rp and pointless. It's true you probably are most of the time playing above 100, but the extra 25 is never noticeable, most of the time is extra 25 to dump on random trash.
-Logan is one of those that is mega broken because people dont apreciate how broken chem stacking is, but it's kind of hard to get the different consumables and to actually craft them (you can get like +7 on everything but agility and luck, with mentats, buffout, sierra madre martini, alcohol and party mentats; not mentioning the ammount of dmg bonuses and resistances you can stack with psychos and other chems). But the fun part of the game arent the chems or levels, it's the perks which add the most functionality and impact to the game. Logan is A on powerlevel, but you cant make a long playthrough with it (unless you use the auto-doc, then it's the second best on the list)
-Small Frame is A tier at best, it's just cool. You can even argue that wearing glasses is less of a downside than the extra dmg taken to limbs. But then you also get this passive trophie perk for breaking limbs that negates it... I think +1 agility is too bland to be S tier compared to Skilled, Logan or Wasteland.
It's funny how firerate being entirely up to the weapon, and accuracy being heavily influenced by the player impact some of this perks power. Or the existence of good natured being usefull but the counterpart being terrible if it existed.

Skilledx3 + Logan's Loophole is actually an insane build. Taking Skilled 3 times is netting you 15 points in all 13 skills, essentially giving you 195 free skill points. With high INT and Educated, levels 31 to 50 would be giving you 323 skill points: a difference of 128. That's actually not too much for the bonus Logan's Loophole provides. Also note that the level 30 Perk GRX Implant chem is also affected by the Loophole. So in exchange for 128 skill points, you'll be getting not only extended addictionless chem use but also 4 seconds of slomo 5 times a day. Hell, if you tack Day Tripper and Chemist you can have up to 16 seconds of slowed time. I cannot overstate how cracked this build is.

Fun Fact about Trigger Discipline and Fast Shot is that their fire rate debuff/buffs dont fully work on automatic weapons. As far as the game is concerned, a 9mm SMG still fires 11 rounds per second regardless, its the INITIAL TRIGGER PULL thats either 20% slower or faster. Meanwhile, the accuracy effects apply either way...so Trigger Dicipline is a near straight upgrade on fully automatic weapons, if you run those, but Fast Shot is still the better trait for single shot (non-shotgun) firearms.

Especially on hardcore, these type of games are always harder earlier in the run, and being able to use superlong lasting psycho, buffout, and med-x early is a huge boon imo, especially since you can't get addicted. Throw in daytripper and chemist at level 14, any buff is nearly permanent. Also, LL (and chemist and daytripper for that matter) dramatically increases stealth boy duration, so you can basically run around roided out and invisible for a ridiculously long time.

As far as i know trigger dicipline and trigger happy dont change the fiering rate of fully automatic weapons, making trigger dicipline a good perk for some of the strongest dps options like the lmg or 12,7mm smg.

Logan's Loop is one the best traits - 15 REALTIME minutes of psycho+mentats+buffout+medX+jet+dickson's jet+tabacco chew+any alcohol = 25% dmg, 25%dr, 3str, 3 en, 60hp, 1 agi, 3per, 1 int, 2 cha. Just restock every ingame day at Great Khans and you iwll be supplied for being high all the time. And don't forget about 10+ mins stealthboys, 1-2 realtime minutes of turbo, etc. Wanna use VATS? Just took steady with 0% chance to addict anytime you want to have 95% chance to hit in VATs with any weapons at any range. And those are for about 4.5 realtime minutes. Need more damage? Use slasher as addition to your psycho for insane +50% dmg and 50% dr total bonus. Slasher lasts 4.5 minutes with Logan's Loop+Chemist+Day Tripper. If you never tried such a build - just try to realise how insane this is.

Good natured is great because, in reality, you're only going to ever specialize in probably 2 weapon skills, maybe 3. That means you're taking points out of several other weapon skills you're not using and putting them into all useful skills that you'll probably be levelling to 100. It's a 100% net gain for most playthroughs.

Even if you don’t wanna re at the The Big MT, I always find the Logan’s Loophole doubters’ criticism to be odd. Yeah you can’t go above level 30, but when you’re at level 30 you’ve probably already completed at least one (probably 2) full dlcs and you’re basically a tank who has at least one or two skills maxed out. This also doesn’t change your ability to get skill books to increase your skills even more. I think going above level 30 at that point only makes the game more trivial, not more fun. And basically being able to be on all drugs at all times is busted at hell.

      -one or two skills maxed
More like all that you need will be maxed. You get stats 10+(INT/2) so even with 1 INT you’ll end up getting 315 points just from level ups, not counting books, magazines, comprehension/educated and whatnot. Your char is maxed out way before lvl 30, I took Logan’s once, and now I can’t live without it.

Trigger Discipline I tend to take on Stealth playthroughs due to what might be cause of it or not, but I usually for sniper kills, enter vats, aim for the head, exit vats and immediately fire, and it always hits and usually kills, especially with better criticals. Not sure if it's cause of Trigger Discipline though.

Disagree on Heavy Handed. It should at least be A-tier. It helps optimize non-crit focused builds, which are plenty powerful in this game. I pretty much run explosives + heavy handed melee all the time now. Melee weapons like Oh Baby! and the Protonic Inversal Axe do obscene amounts of raw damage.
And one of the downsides of crit builds is that they're expensive in terms of SPECIAL and perk cost. Without having to worry about Luck and crit perks, you have a surprisingly large amount of breathing room with how you spend them.

Pick four eyes and wild wasteland and pick the most volatile speech options with low charisma.

I gotta disagree with Trigger Discipline honestly. The bonus accuracy is pretty nice to have when shooting enemies from slightly further away, and it allows me to avoid using VATS. It's a notable loss in RoF, but I needn't worry about it when I’m using an anti-material rifle (the bonus accuracy helps a lot when choosing to focus on using “One-shot One-kill” weapons). It's an equal and opposite of Fast Shot for non-VATS precision builds like mine.
Not exactly a DMR or dedicated sniper, but kind of a jack-of-all-trades/master-of-none with standard guns

I would personally shove Good Natured in S Tier for a simple reason: Even the most Combat Skill intensive build (Melee/Unarmed with Pyromaniac) only cares about 3 of them (Melee, Unarmed, and Explosives), as such you're not trading 25 for 25, you're trading 15 for 25.
