Just in case you haven't looked it up..."Shogun" was originally a novel by James Clavell released in 1975. It was made into an American television mini-series back in 1980. This show is a new adaptation. It was filmed mostly around Vancouver, Canada. It had the largest Japanese film crew for any TV or film production filmed outside of Japan. They had all kinds of expert consultants to be sure to depict the most accurate portrayal of 1600's Japan as possible - including costumes, language (1600's Japanese is not the same as modern Japanese), movements, etc. The novel, while fictional, is based on real events in Japanese history with most of the major characters being based on real historical figures. I hope you enjoy!
it is technically historic fiction, but the real events are followed so closely by the novels and the show that even a light glance at wikipedia might spoil a lot
Before Cosmo Jarvis (the actor playing the English pilot) became an actor he was a singer/songwriter in my area and I saw him play a few times in local pubs and venues (his music is still on Spotify), I'm always glad to see a local lad made good!
OK, right now - when you're horrified and bewildered and totally lost - you're exactly where the show wants you to be. Right now, you are in the position of John Blackthorne, the English pilot, who is lost in an alien world just as much as if this was a Star Trek show. Things he sees as absolute truths, things he'd never even imagine questioning, simply do not apply in this land. You will go along with him as he finds his way, in this brilliant show. I'm so happy to see you've started this one, you are going to adore it. The best description I've seen of Lord Toranaga is that he is Ned Stark, if Ned had a fucking clue about how to actually play the game.
Shogun is an adaptation of James Clavells (British Writer was in the British Army during WW2 and was captured and tortured by the Japanese. He wrote a book specifically about that exprience titled King Rat.) Book of the same title. There was also an adaptation in the 1980s that was well loved. The book changes the names of real historic characters and tells a slightly alter version of real history. John Blackthorne the English pilot is based off William Adams (Who took the Japanese name Miura Anjin after he settled in Japan) the first English pilot to reach Japan. Just like in the show he arrived there off the back of a Dutch Privateer seeking to open trade with Japan on behalf of the Dutch and English. At the time Spain and Portugal were the only Nations in Europe that had successfully sailed to Japan and had opened very profitable trade routes. Both Spain and Portugal at the time were the world leaders in terms of power. They commanded massive amounts of wealth due to their colonisation and trading. Both the Dutch and the English at this time were a lot less wealthy and had been in conflict with Spain in particular because of their wealth and because of the Protestant and Catholic divide. The Dutch would go on to become the next dominant sea power leading to the creation of the Dutch East India company which is historically one of it not the richest companies to ever exist. England and eventually Britain would not come to similar levels of wealth as Spain really until the 1700s over a 100 years after this show. And Britain would not become the defacto world leader until after they defeat Napoleon another 100 years later in 1815.
Yes, you have many questions and all of them will be answered in due time, but you have to pay close attention because every word and every detail has a meaning and a reason in this programme. Yabushige (the madman) is a complicated character, loathsome and fascinating at the same time. As the series progresses you will begin to understand the vast cultural differences. Possibly the best series of the year.
This is a very densely packed show with a lot of subtle notes, so FX (the network that produced this show) has a website with an episode guide that explains the things that have happened. Each episode guide does not go too far to ruin the next episode, so it is good to read it after watching the episode. You have probably already watched the whole series at this point, but it is still good to read afterwards, to get more insight. Very happy you have watched this show!
a little history to fill in the gaps. at this time period, the Emperor had no real power. it had been usurped by a military dictator (the "Shogun") a few centuries back. however, by the time of the show the "Shogun" (a title that stayed in that dictator's family) had also become powerless. real power was held by the lords of each region, which caused a very unstable political environment. one of the regional lords was nearly successful in consolidating power over everyone and becoming the new Shogun, but he was killed. one of his Generals then finished that task and united Japan...however, that General was not related to the "Shogun" family and so could not assume the title. he died of old age and charged 5 Lords to watch over his young son until the kid could take power. that's where the show starts and one of those 5 lords is Lord Toronaga.
Love that you're watching this show - it's going to be a wild ride! And while there's a lot to take in in this first episode, I thought you both did a great job of breaking down those first impressions in your discussion! Great job!
As this show proceeds, you can get the feel this was what was happening in another part of the world while Black Sails was happening. This first episode is ROUGH, but after the next one many things become more clear. The guy with the beard who looks so familiar is Nestor Carbonell, was in Lost and Bates Motel and lots of sitcoms!
An American production (including the showrunners) of Japanese history, filmed in Canada (because of course it is) based on a book by an Australian born British raised/educated, naturalized American. A great show! Every episode is about as perfect as it gets.
Incase you guys miss about the show, this is the show made by western about feudal japan, so basically this is not asian tv show it's western tv show but the set or most the topic in asia which is japan, i never seen any show that made by western that took every material based on asia history except middle east about mummy, so i guess bcs ppl like samurai?. anyway this is great show, glad you guys decided to watch it.
16:53 Cases when a samurai may draw his sword from its sheath to use it. - When he is ordered by his lord to kill someone - When taking revenge (but only if an older family member has been killed) - When he is attacked - When his honor has been seriously injured However, once he has drawn his sword to kill someone, he must kill them, even if it means his own death. I missed you two! It's been a while since you reacted to a show I like, or even saw. Now I also saw you started doing Fallout, so that's awesome as well. This one's a great one. Didn't expect this adaptation to be so good, and from what I saw about your tastes, I'm confident you'll love it as well. :)
La reacción más esperad de Latinoamerica unida!!! This is the best show so far of 2024, it is an absolute masterpiece, i dont know how many episodes ahead you're on Patreon but i'm sure you'd love it.
Yesss!!! Was hoping both of you would react to this, it’s just excellent from the acting, writing to the production value and detail, my favourite show from this year. Looking forward to your reactions! Also I know it’s probably not worthwhile for both of you to react from a viewership/numbers perspective, but I hope you two do check out The Curse and Hacks even if it is on your own time, they are my other two favourite shows from this year/recent times.
They will use names and relations a lot on the show, so eventually you will pick them up. But they will rarely use John Blackthorne, they just call him Anjin (aka Pilot) or barbarian. Sama is like Lord or Lady. Sometimes they use domo, when a high lord addresses a lower lord.
About hairstyles, maybe useless trivia: the "samurai hairdo" (bald head with a ponytail pointing back or up) serves to accomodate better the helmet. The hair works as a cushion for the metal thing.
The bald head with the topknot worn by men is a haircut called chonmage. It was how they held their samurai helmet steady in battle. It eventually became a symbol of status.
This is a very intriguing series, and complicated. It kind of unfolds every episode. Overall, at that time very little was known about Japan by most western countries. Japan was then very different than European culture and beliefs. In my opinion, this is one of the best TV shows ever. The producers spent a fortune getting Japanese experts on this time period so they could get it right.

He was the first one onto the ruined ship at the beginning to investigate. He's also the one who spilled fish guts on Blackthorne, pissed on him, chopped a random Catholic's head off in front of him, and threw him at the mercy of his uncle. However, as you two noted, he - along with everyone else in the village - was deeply disturbed by his uncle's "special way" of killing. He seems to admire his uncle, but is also uncomfortable with his behavior. LADY KIKU The best courtesan in the land. From gruesome context clues, she was able to figure out that Yabushige is a voyeur in every sense of the word; and thus knew that banging his squire right in front of him is exactly what she needed to do.
Good choices, guys. "Shogun" is the only show I've seen since "The Expanse" that I'd rate as being as good as - or possibly better than - it. "Fallout" is in the "almost as good as The Expanse" category - along with Andor and a couple of other shows...
As one would probably expect, the country with the most natural disasters of any place in the world (and the most snow fall in the world) initially produced a brutal culture that was extremely focused on death, how inevitable it is and how helpless we all are against it. The first, second and third response to most situations is "I should probably kill myself." It's rough, and I'm glad it's changed a bit over the last century, but it's always been very, very hard to be Japanese. My Japanese coworker even said recently that she enjoyed the happiness of American graduation ceremonies, because graduation in Japan is viewed as a sad ending, almost like a funeral. Almost everything in Japan is thought of as a metaphor for death.
This series is pure artistic perfection at every level. Rewatches allow to see all the detail they put into this production. There is a season 2 coming. They are going to go beyond the book it is based on. A Koku was equal to 1 years worth of rice for 1 person. So 3,000 Koku was rice equivalent for 3,000 people for 1 year.
15 seconds in and Blondie is already asking a million questions. I know you have to do your commentary but for the love of God woman. You have to actually pay attention to know what’s going on

u guys are in for a treat. such a next level good show
I know you've watched more already, but just in case you need more clarification on who you've already been introduced to:
JOHN BLACKTHORNE
Pilot of the Erasmus; the broken ship that has currently been confiscated by Toranaga. Blackthorne is English, but the ship and the rest of the crew are Dutch.
TORANAGA
The leader who the council is against. The one who is keeping the heir's mother in his land. You seem to have a good grasp on him so far. He doesn't want to be Shogun, some think he absolutely should be, and everyone else...wants him to die. 😆
MARIKO
You don't seem to be confused about her at all. Indeed, very little is shown of her at this point, other than to signify that she's important.
YABUSHIGE
"The Guy Who Boils People". 😂 Even though you didn't remember his name, you already seem to know his character well. As far as connections go, the town where the broken Erasmus ended up is in the land Yabushige is in charge of; which is why he showed up to claim the ship and the "barbarians" for himself...before Hiromatsu showed up to claim them for Toranaga (sucks to suck). His nephew Omi is in charge of that town specifically. The guy who tells Lady Kiku - the courtesan - about Yabushige's obsession with death, and then gets boned by her while Yabushige watches, is his unnamed assistant. I guess you'd call him his squire.
HIROMATSU
This one's important. You seemed to forget who he was, which added to your confusion since he's connected to several people. So far, what's been shown is that he's Toranaga's right hand man; the one who was complaining about being in Osaka, and the one Toranaga sent to confiscate Blackthorne's ship from Yabushige; which he did. Lady Fuji (who's husband and child are now dead) is his granddaughter.
OMI
Yabushige's nephew; in charge of the town Blackthorne arrived at in the Erasmus.
LADY KIKU
The best courtesan in the land. From gruesome context clues, she was able to figure out that Yabushige is a voyeur in every sense of the word; and thus knew that banging his squire right in front of him is exactly what she needed to do.
After the second episode I got addicted 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yes queens!!!! This is the show you needed to be watching!!
they speak English but they are actually speaking Portuguese
i missed you after Breaking Bad ❤
Scavengers reign is pretty good, I hope you guys check it out too!

I am always amazed that there are people who never heard of Shogun....... I mean come on... did you sleep through history?
Shugon much better than any series out there..
Hell yeah, let's go!
The Spanish character Rodrigues is play by American actor Nestor Carbonell.

Good choices, guys. "Shogun" is the only show I've seen since "The Expanse" that I'd rate as being as good as - or possibly better than - it. "Fallout" is in the "almost as good as The Expanse" category - along with Andor and a couple of other shows...
The Expanse and Shogun are the top two, everything else is a distant second.
Maybe if yall can get them to watch pluto(sincebits so short) they ll watch monster since its the same creator
finally a good decision again^^
Omg yes you are finally watching this
Did Toranaga remind you of Ned Stark? Tywin Lannister is more appropriate :)
Fallout and now Shogun too ? we eating
They have to watch Gen V so they can watch the new season of The Boys!
They don’t really have to.
@@kaan9254 It would be better for them to see it, especially because according to the trailers there will be Gen V characters
@@kaan9254 and it would be cool to see their reaction
Gen V is bad
That's why personally i droped the Boys, I don't want the pressure to see the spinnof just to follow the story
好きなキャラクターが次々と亡くなるから悲しい作品だった
Day 1 of asking for a reaction of Succession!
they will not react to the boys spin off???
waiting for house of the dragon season 2
無理すんなよwwww(^o^)
asian version of game of thrones. season 2 is coming!
best show of the year, but one of the worst reactions
Yess
Good show
Please where’s episode 128 of hxh im so excited!
This show made me think "fuck this horrible inhuman culture" from the start.
Wooo
15 seconds in and Blondie is already asking a million questions. I know you have to do your commentary but for the love of God woman. You have to actually pay attention to know what’s going on
