My beautiful husband of 56 years passed away 10 days ago and he loved his flannel shirts and wore them all the time. I'm going to make one for each of my 3 children and myself. Thank you for sharing this lovely idea. Big hugs from Australia.
❤ my condolences. I lost my husband of 46 years, and he wore plaid shirts just like in the video. But like yours, he wore the same kind of shirts everyday too. I am going to make one for each of our 3 daughters, 1 for myself, and 2 granddaughters. I have to do mine by hand. I don't see or have a machine but I have been watching videos on his to do it by hand. I think using Leslie's pattern, it won't be too hard. It may take. While though, but hey, time I have plenty of. Anyway, hugs to you on your grief journey.
I can’t believe I found this video, thought I was alone in this. I have a shirt of my sisters that I planned on making a pillow with, it’s now 3 years ago….. from the notes, you made this 3 years ago.❤️
Same here I know how to sew etc.. but I have had my dads shirt for almost 6 yrs now I kept saying I’m gonna make a shirt pillow my mom had a few made for her I just haven’t done it and now we lost my mom this past march to pneumonia now I have 6 of hers and four of my dads mom cousin offered to make them for me an I wa spike omg how awesome I just dnt think i can do it wasn’t sure I was gonna have time and plus it’s still pretty fresh and truly my heart just couldn’t so ya I wanted her to do it for me wasn’t sure I could find a video on making one and this morning I thought I’m gonna see if there is a video my cousin has been waiting since April I told her let me go thru her things and when we’re done and have her home closed up I will definitely get them to her but I still haven’t got them to her I have any brothers and sisters plus my two kids and my nephews they all picked out a shirt so she had a lot to make with I told her she was fine with it wanted to do this for us she knowing what we were goin thru still wanted to do this for us tht made me so happy but I am embarrassed I guess to give her so many lol so I’m gonna check it out to see how quick and easy it is so I can just make them and give them to everyone as a my gift this Christmas
This is just the tutorial I was looking for. My dad passed away in December. We're in the process of cleaning out his place this month, and I saved a dress shirt I remember him wearing in my childhood. I'm so looking forward to making it into a pillow, thanks to you. With gratitude, from Saskatchewan 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for sharing especially the quote. I just lost my Dad last week and grabbed a few of his shirts. Seeing how easy this is, I may grab some more and pass them out to family.
My daughter is on an amazing journey to recovery. An incredible, strong young woman she has become. This is a special holiday, we haven’t been together like this in a few years. So this year is sentimental. I lost my dad a few years back, and have one of his main flannels. I’ll be doing this for my girl. Her and my dad were true best friends. I’m excited to do this, thank you for sharing!🙂 Happy Holidays to you and your families ♥️
I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our Dad several years back and I so wish I would have saved some of his shirts for this very thing. These that I made this time were for another family member and it seemed to mean so much to those that received these. Happy Holidays to you as well.
Love the word “finagled” definition needs to become part of my daily vocabulary. I have lot of my late mums clothes she passed away when my daughter was just two weeks old, so its been a very turbulent time learning to be a mum with out my own mum for guidance. Thank you for this video
@@LesleyChandlercrafts good idea on the quilts too! Luckily my mum made me one before she passed away- but it would also be a lovely keepsake and a lovely way to learn to use her sewing machine too
Thank you. This is a great and simple pattern. I was concerned doing a more elaborate one as I've never made one and don't want to ruin a shirt from my godfather. I also plan to sitch a removable heart to put in the shirt pocket with his cologne sprayed on it.
I try to do pillow covers that can easily come off to wash the cover when needed. That's another benefit to the snaps on this one you are making. If the shirt has perspiration smell, before using the shirt for your pillow cover, soak at least 1 hour, 12 parts warm water to 1 part vinegar. Then launder as usual. Unless you want the memory of the person whose shirt it was.
I think i have been hesitant to do this myself because I’m worried I’d mess up even tho I have been sewing for well over 35 yrs lol if I mess up I don’t have anymore of My dad or moms Shirts I would absolutely just cry my eyes out probably for days or even months I absolutely love the snap idea what a clever idea tht never even crossed my mind!! But my granddaughter picked a beautiful dressy crewneck sweatshirt my mom wore quite often in fall & winter it has some laces mop on the shoulder are and she told me to make sure if I don’t make it tht whoever does it keeps the lace part on it I kind of snickered think ok I’m sure Shelley knows how to do tht cuz I’m like looking at it goin nope no way no how is tht gonna work lol I still look at goin uh nope can’t be done or at least I won’t get it right 😂 .. now since I gave in and am gonna do this myself how in the world can I make this work for her I think she deeply wants it left b cause she would always play with them when mom was around her it was probably her favorite shirt of mamas (mamaw) I might just give it to Shelley and let her since she made so many of these memory pillows lol Mths
@@mtblondie0036 it is hard to cut up their belongings for fear of messing up! I’m having the same feelings about cutting into a quilt. My grandma made me so that I can take some of it and make a wall hanging because most of it is so worn out and unsalvageable.
That is a good point. I have not experienced that with this type of material. But, you could zigzag the edges all the way around before you sew the pieces together maybe? Thanks for watching!
If you want an even easier “lazier way you could already turn it inside out when you cut it, that way all you have to do is take the pins off of the pattern and slip it back into the shirt to start sewing
I dont have a sewing machine so would have to hand stitch. I literally cried watching this because I have my son's shirt that looks similar to this one. He wore it when he took me to eat last Mother's Day. He died unexpectedly a few months later on Nov 8, 2023. Age 29 😢 Do you know if there is a way to get a photo turned into an iron on transfer? I have a selfie that we took together on that day and would love to have the photo on the pillow.
I have tons of throw pillows I don’t use anymore I kept them just put them up keep saying don’t throw away u can use them for maybe seasonal pillows just use the Material I want measure it against pillow and there I have it lol but some I think will be small I would loose a lot of the shirt and I don’t want tht I want most of the front ya know so I might just go see if I can find some at store for cheap (haha in this economy it will Be impossible) but along with the snaps being the opening and using an old pillow as my base such clever ideas I so love the snaps idea I am just blown away and thank you for this video it seems so quick and easy

This is a wonderful idea. I should have saved my dads shirts. He wore the snap kind also. Beautiful memories. Thanks for the idea .

My niece in Big Spring made one out of Vince and her Daddy’s shirt (my brother). They are beautiful and mean so much!
Yes, I made several for Wayne's daughters and a niece!

Thank you for sharing your video and tutorial.
Very nice job and well explained.
Fantastic!
Love this so much! Would button up shirt work similarly to snaps? Or does the insert push the buttons apart?
The button up would work too!
Love this.. Thank you. 🙏

Thank you for the tutorial. My concern is with washing will the seams start to fray or can you do a double row. ?

On a button down shirt you need to leave an opening on one of the sides correct.
I did not. After I sewed everything, I opened the snaps or buttons and slipped pillow in that way.
What about button up shirts? Same technique?
Love this idea! What seam allowance did you use? I'm wanting to make a couple of these!
Hey there. Thank you! I used 1/2” seam allowance.
@@LesleyChandlercrafts Thank you so much! I made a couple and that's what I used. They were a big hit! Thanks fir sharing this video!💕
Great idea! I want to make some with my hubby’s uncles shirts I don’t know how to sew can I make this without sewing?
Oooh I don’t know unless you sew by hand! I don’t think fabric glue would be durable enough. Let me know if you try it.
@@LesleyChandlercrafts I will
Awesome 👏
Do you have the link for the patch???
Did you sew it right sides together?
I am so sorry I just saw this question. Yes, right sides together. Thanks!
I could nott find the lable om Etsy.
Here is a link to one shop that makes them. www.etsy.com/listing/611269094/custom-memory-pillow-patch-any?ref=yr_purchases
The shirts I have are button not snapped. Would that work?
Yes, that should work the same

How to make a memory pillow from a shirt with embroidery across the shoulder at the back
Does it matter what size the shirt is?
What seam allowances did you use?
I am sorry I just saw your question. I used 1/2” seam allowance. Thank you. I will remember to explain that next time! 😀
Did you sew 1/2 inch around
Yes! Thank you!
Where can I find the pillow that size?
I got mine on Amazon. Walmart and Hobby Lobby often have this size too.
May I ask where yo got the pillow form?
Yes, I got it at Hobby Lobby.
It was 16X16 i always go one inch less all the way around.

It doesn't look like a 17 x 17 square?? The one side looks longer. Otherwise good vid...thanks for sharing
I found the patch on Etsy..which size did u use?
4x4”
4 by 4 inch
I'd be concerned that the newspaper ink will rub off on the shirt, definitely on fingers, then it will get rubbed on the shirt. No?
I suppose that is a possibility if the ink is pretty fresh. I have not had that problem.
