Thanks for this suggestion. I ended up getting a bad soldering wick which didn't suck the excess solder to it. This video has helped heaps. Big kudos from me to you. Cheers heaps.

Thanks for this tip bro. I think I got some bad soldering wick, so I'll try what you did in the vid.👍

Thank you for sharing this video. I am new to soldering but I have a problem. I want to remove the attachment from my brooch . I heat the soldering iron to 350 degrees, I put some flux on the attachment, and I try to desolder with the wick. But nothing happens....What can be the problem? Maybe because I do not have rosin flux? (I have normal wick)

How do you get the solder wick from stop sticking to the board/pads?

I swear I have a large roll of the stuff you have! I think what happens is that over years (mine is over 10 years old) it forms a copper oxide. I am going to experiment with soaking he wick in vinegar to see if that activates it.
BTW, more about that soldering iron and what looked like some kind of vacuum attachment?
    AND what brand flux?

Nofer Trunions could you update me on how the vinegar experiment went?

I get the cheapest generic stuff then soak it in pine rosin from a pine tree thinned with alcohol then hang it to dry. Works just as good as the name brand stuff we use at the factory.

so the pine resin... do you set it on fire before putting it in alcohol?
I've made my own flux with pine resin and alcohol but I made a strainer with foil and put the resin on it and let it burn and melt through the holes then mixed it with alcohol. that was awhile back and I don't have any now but I want to make it and I'm wondering whether I shld burn the resin or not

oh yeah but the stuff I made worked a lot better than the bought flux I had.
I just don't know if it would be EVEN BETTER not to burn the pine sap before adding alcohol

@@heatherrhodge2588I heated the resin in a old sauce pan outside then strained the resin through a screen. After it cooled I put the resin in a large sealed bottle then added alcohol to it. It takes a couple of days for the resin to melt and mix in. Shake it a few times, also it will melt faster in a warm place.

@@troytaylor1913 yeah I noticed it was difficult to get the resin mixed with the alcohol.
do you have any idea whether heating it rather than putting a flame to it and letting it burn changes any of the pine saps properties? or in other words, would heating it like you explained create a better flux versus melting it by setting it on fire the way I did in the past?
I didnt make a good choice with the container i put my resin & alcohol in. it ended up getting tipped over a couple mts after I made it and leaked out, hence why I don't have any anymore.

I sealed it in plastic pill container with a lid then put it over a heater vent in the winter or a warm sunny place outside in the summer. That helps the rosin dissolve and melt into the alcohol.

does the type of flux make a diff also??

I bought a soldering wick, the seller said it was “high quality” but it just wont absorb the metal easily. Now i know it was a bad one

OOOOOOOOHHHHH, thats what is going wrong, I'm having the problem of the wick not working at all, I think the temperature is too low, but also, I was not applying flux to the wick beforehand... damn! I also didn't know you can buy wick that has flux on it

    • @Open6a-fx4qf

Even without flux soldering wick should able to absorb the metal. It just a bad one

I applied flux but still Solder is not transferring to wick. Help, anyone

I always see everyone using the Rosin Core Flux. I have a different one that is white. It says it's made for motherboards but it doesn't work like it's suppose to
