Why Does Hydrogen Peroxide Foam When Put On A Cut?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- Hydrogen peroxide's foaming action is due to the catalase in blood and cells. Check out this episode of BrainStuff to learn how hydrogen peroxide interacts with catalase.
Whether the topic is popcorn or particle physics, you can count on the HowStuffWorks team to explore - and explain - the everyday science in the world around us on BrainStuff.

This guy is hilarious! Love his dry humor delivery. "Then getting very very bored and ask yourself what you're doing with your life."
I thought it was because it was killing the bacteria
Sithlord ™
Few bacteria do have the catalase enzyme, yes.
The catalase enzyme actually protects the staphylococcus aureus
F C B Ohhhh
Me too or blood cells with oxygen in them (and blood on the outside gets a lot more oxygen) and then the hydrogen peroxide eats away at it and the oxygen molecules are released, creating gas and bubbles.
Right.same thought.
This is the 8-ball music on game pigeon😂😂
Dude, way to much energy, tone it down just a bit.
I enjoy watching him, he always looks content it makes me laugh
Watching him is like listening to a lullabuy. I love this dude.
sassy_sasarai couldn't agree more

@@Youngsoldier93 Took me three years to tell you this. Three long years.
*It was a joke dumbass.*
A man walks into a bar, he asks for H2O. His buddy says, "I'll have some H2O too!" His buddy dies. If you understand, this is cheesey and funny.
Took me a second 😂
Buddy=Body pun? I hope it is not
@@Salman-Q H2O2
As a kid they were great at distracting me from noticing the pain of my cuts and scrapes. As an adult I still like the bubbles. :-)
I refuse to believe this lol it foams because its killing bacteria damnit 😂
Yes I agree that's what I been knowing my whole life so it foams cause it kills bacteria
Oh my god, his level is excitement is unmeasurable wow, it's contagious. I hope he makes more videos
Hydrogen peroxide also reacts with ear wax. When I was younger my ear was clogged or something of that nature I remember someone had put a few drops to loosen the blockage. I don't really recall who but I do remember the bubbling feeling.I still use it for like a bad itch once and a while, probably shouldn't use it this way but I figure it's better than sticking a q-tip or something in my ear that could actually puncture my drum.
Exactly, I tended to use it instead of q-tips in order to get deeper.
Excellent video! The background music is a tad loud, however the video is still informative thus great.
The 8ball song💀💀
Heard the song and went immediately down to the comments 😂
Did it with my liver, it worked well!
This is something that I have wondered for a long time now.
Ok, so if this is catalase that makes it foam on the body, how do you explain it when it foams on a surface, so example to clean the bathroom or the kitchen sink? Many thanks.
So if you pour hydrogen peroxide down a drain if fizzes as well. Is that because bacteria have that compound in them?
This channel should be more popular!!!
I one got a second degree burn and it hurt so bad I cried. I then thought I should clean it but with something that wont hurt so I used hydrogen peroxide and something crazy happened. not only the burn turned white but for quite some time the pain disappeared!!! how do you explain this? should I continue applying it when the pain comes back?
but does it clean the wound
One time i had a huge nosebleed and let it drop into a small cup, then i poured hydrogen peroxide in. It made a giant solid jelly like clump of blood, the reaction gave off heat too, so the clump was like almost uncomfortable to hold. Then I squashed it. That was a fun day.
First of all , i would like to thank you for your helpful videos , can you please explain why do pure oxygen and water treat the wound ?
It doesn't treat the wound, it cleans the wound. ;)
cleaning is part of wound treatment. @@Z-42
Never done that before in my life
hahaha...love that part when you mention the potato.
I've never gotten pain from hydrogen peroxide. Rubbing alcohol on the other hurts alot for a few seconds.
i get chills when i see the foam
So if I pour hydrogen peroxide on my rinsed and dried tooth brush, is it reacting to molecules of old blood with Catalase that I cannot see?
The walking dead season two lol
hydrogen peroxide on wound is not painful at all. try iodine tincture or alcohol or salt on wound :)
I think he was referring to the wound itself being painful.
My question is whats the normal intake for swallowing peroxide..let me give you an example ..if I brush my teeth then gargle with peroxide about 4/5times a week an I accidentally swallow the solution at least 2 times a week about tbsp or a little more what are the side effects for toxicity whe'm I do this
No the concentration is too low to actually kill you. That doesn't mean you should though. Your body is actually pretty good at breaking down some peroxide but at higher concentrations. The store bought peroxide only has 3%. It's not very much but still not recommended to drink
Very informative,
Great Job! ✔
Can you actually calculate how much the human body can lift (weights or other heavy stuff)
Cool vid man You got my subscription.
I have seen what hydrogen peroxide is. But I have never seen it working. Thanks. Brain stuff
josh is awesome and hilarious :D Cool video. I've always wondered about this.
You guys are awesome! Love it!
I like it! Educational and entertaining.
Love the iphone pool song in the background
Why not answer the reason why one uses HO2, how it works and what is the function of Catalase?
Also peroxide cleans infection out of wounds.
Mr. O-Town Oh. My parents always told me to use it to clean infection.
Raging Umbreon me too!
Also kills healthy bactiria too.
I got a toothpick stuck in my foot and I used peroxide. Pulling it out hurt way more, though.
So is this just a random side effect, or is there something important about breaking down the exposed catalase?
Nice video! Wow Arlene, I've never seen anyone actually enthusiastic about biochemical pathways! This is a great channel. I subscribed. Thanks!
what is Hydrogen Peroxide for in medical use anyways ? i have no idea
It shrinks and hardens the affected area. Can stop bleeding among other uses. Not the best thing to treat a cut with, but if you're in desperate need for medical attention, it's definitely the fastest. Also, it can be used to clear wax out of your ears.
acne treatment and toothpaste
Josh, you're awesome.
When you're using liver, a little goes a long way. And if you're holding the container, test tube, or what have you, be careful because it gets quite hot.
thanks for the vid, my only constructive advice would be, next time have a live example of the reaction (ie the potato) on rather than just a graphic.
This is awesome! I’m going to build an apparatus with potatoes and peroxide that will allow me to breath underwater! Yay!
Shit I hope I don’t die
you alive?
starotte yeah. Never made it yet otherwise I’d probably be dead
Can i use it on acne scares? Plz answer :((
Ice Cream not if their scars. nothing can fix scars. sorry guy
was like "this guy's voice and mannerisms sound so familiar" until I realized oh it's Josh from Things you Should Know. Was imagining someone looking pretty different while listening to the podcast
(i skipped to 13 secs in and didnt see the name)
Can I use pure 3% hydrogen peroxide to disinfect covid on celery?
cool video. peroxide has never hurt a cut before on me though. never use peroxide on your dog for cuts ( at least not more than once as its not good for dogs.
I am about to peroxide a blister and I just wanted to know how it foams. Cool!
Raging Umbreon
I think I seen you on a live stream before but I forgot the name
enjoyed this video
Josh, I beg you, do an episode of "Don't Be Dumb" wearing a Batman costume.
Because, you know, you look so alike Christian Bale, it would be hilarious and educative. And, you know, stuff that educative and highly amusing at the same time are great.
Not all the time, because not all bacterias are catalse postive , some of the bacterias are catalase negative that`s why sometimes it doesn`t foam when you put hydrogen peroxide.
Bleach reacts to my dogs pee... Just putting that out there.
ok, so when it foams in my sink does that means there is bacteria in the sink? Or something?
Not all bacteria have catalase, but the ones that do will bubble just like our cells. Also, if it was liver and onions night and there was residue in the sink after dumping things in the garbage disposal, I suppose that is likely too.
Your funny. Love it!
Brain stuff- how does creatine affect muscle growth?
Can I use hydrogen peroxide on my ingrown toenail ?
Does it kill viruses?
Hah!! Josh Clark is my favorite!!!
After so many years of Doctors telling people to use Hydrogen Peroxide on minors cuts to clean and speed the healing process, now they’re saying that it’s more harmful and to not use it !!!! I went to the Doctors office and the chick was GOOGLING MY SYMPTOMS!!!!! Like WHATttheFUX!!!!
It’s the only one that doesn’t burn. Now sone rubbing alcohol and you can say ow ow 😂
I love you dude !
Love Chemistry..
So the chemical reaction between Catalase in the cells and Hydrogen Peroxide cause the cell wall to break apart..?
It that from the physical(chemical?) force that's exerted when HO2 turns into H2O & O, or something else?
Does your body foam when you drink it?
Just once I wanna hear him say “turtle, turtle” 🐢
Even on fabric
You said there are "lots of ruptured cells", but I find it hard to believe that. Cells are extremely small. Even with a very very sharp knife, it would be difficult to cut through a cell. They would simply just get out of the way of the knife.
Your skin is made of cells, how can you have a cut if you can't cut cells?
Christopher Raff Cells are extremely small. The sharp part of a knife hitting your cells would be like a bus hitting a crowd of people. The bus doesn't go through the people. The people would go around the bus. That's oversimplified, but hopefully you get the idea. The cut is just the cells separating from one another, not the cells themselves being physically cut in half.
Zantaer Cells can rupture pretty easily when they have peroxide poured over them. Serious note: Cells rupture all the time. When ever you do something as mundane as picking something up cells rupture, is it so hard to believe that a cut can rupture cells?
cakebrin3r I just looked it up, and you're right. Cells will rupture due to an osmotic imbalance that peroxide causes. It's called Cytolysis. And cells may rupture due to contact with the knife, but I thought the video made it sound like the knife physically cut through the cells, which is not the case.
Zantaer Well not "cut" them but you know. Cut them. Its not like cells are atoms and the knife is your hands, Cells are pretty big and the atoms at the end of knifes are pretty small so its not like its impossible to cut a cell with something sharp especially when you have such a big target(E.g you)
Dilute it with clean water until you get the correct foam. Remember they key is to dilute it correctly. That's it.
This guy sounds so monotone I don't know why they gave the video color...
Where’s Charles W Chuck Bryant?
All these people don’t know who josh Clark is and are really thrown off by his energy is killing me.
oml i play softball and when i cut myself sliding or diving my mom makes me put hydrogen peroxide and it stings soo bad
ikr
Feels great if u put it in your ear when u have an earache
I have heard the background noise somewhere. I DONT KNOW WHERE AND ITS KILLING ME!!! it’s a Game...😰
Kahoot or quiz let
Wait no it’s 8-Ball pool on the iPhone pigeon games
Damn, cut myself before the end and hit an artery, had to be rushed to the hospital, he should have said that start.
He is fine!
Hmm. I randomly searched for this answer. Was surprised to put a face to the name. Listen to josh on his podcast.
It oxidizes, very efficiently.
well then why does it work on bacteria ridden shoes?
Because there will usually be skin cells remaining in the shoes.
Well, I've got a new crush.
I wanted to use this video in correlation with my distance learning potato and H2O2 experiment with my fourth graders, but the cynical comment about life towards the end changed my mind. Too bad because they would’ve like the video.
me on my way to make some
50% safe sparkling water with hydrogen peroxide and a potato
Bruh this whole video all i could think about was the fact that it’s the 8-ball music
never in my life has anyone put hydrogen peroxide on my wounds no matter the size. i am today years old when i find out that shit is a thing
But WHY is the question
Thanks, Christian Bale. Shouldn't you be out fighting crime?
When a Google answer is not enough.
DON'T USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE ON CUTS! Abrasions fine, rash fine, anywhere you would WANT to KILL live skin dermis (*painful) to accelerate the process of becoming the top protective layer of dead skin epidermis (*not painful) is fine.
When you use peroxide on a cut you kill the edge of the joint you want to GROW together. DEAD TISSUE DOES NOT GROW! This LENGTHENS healing time and increases the chances of scaring or makes the scar more pronounced.
*Live skin is NOT supposed to be exposed anytime it is it's painful. The dead skin your body is surrounded with protects the inner layer of live skin
Stacy Smith hi sir do you have any contact info where i can ask you some question about chemicals?
So wait, it doesn’t clean the cut and make it better ? I’m so confused.
the fact this was made when i was 3 months old
I thought it had something to do with peroxomes?
I told my wife to turn down her iMessage game because i was trying to watch this video. But no that’s the background music.
A cut brought me here.
The 8-ball music tho
Josh Clark is hot in a weird way.
then why do you watch it
HOW DO YOU MAKE IT NOT HURT ;-;
numb shot. I guess.....
+KrazyAlex1 lol
By NOT applying it.
Forget the nitrous; use a tank of blood and peroxide.
