It’s so good to watch quality interviews like this. It makes me cringe sometimes to see the actors subjected to the superficial, repetitive and sometimes salacious treatment they get from lesser skilled interviewers or the entertainment sites who only have five minutes to talk about the show. Even though Cait, Sam and other cast members do a terrific job at “playing along” with the silly stuff, we learn so much more about them like this. I’ve been impressed with what great ambassadors they are for the show and to see the genuine joy they have being part of this project. I’ve only known about Outlander for 3 months! I am in awe of the enormous effort behind the scenes that distill into what we, the viewers, finally see!
Off topic here, but both Cait, and especially Sam, look rested. This pandemic self-isolation has been good for them in that sense. Both are great actors and make their characters real & believable!
I started reading the Outlander books years ago and was very apprehensive when the show came out because I didn’t trust it would do justice to the complex characters and rich storytelling. I’m beyond thrilled. From the acting to the costumes and cinematography - simply phenomenal. The show actually made me interested in learning about the history of the clans and shed light on how these early immigrants shaped the America we see today. Beautiful job that all involved can be proud of.
Yikes! Series has gone on too long! Like many, it has just gotten silly, and tiresome. Too bad is wasn't a mini series. It would have been worthy of all the hype.
Have such great respect and admiration for all these wonderful actors, writers, directors, set designers and costume designers!! Will miss Jon Gary Steele and his staff!! You will be missed!! Blessings!!
I'm glad they aren't 20 yrs younger because the show covers an epic swath of time and they are inhabiting their roles beautifully. They will go down in cinematic history as the greatest love story ever told.
They mentioned about an end with Jamie and Claire throwing it off the book, I would definitely will love to see them going back to Scotland visit the place where they got married and going back to Lallybroch. Fantastic interview it's always a pleasure listening to Sam and Cat, can't wait for season 6
This was an outstanding interview. Thank you. It’s a sad fact that the production values of Outlander, from the excellent development process, to the acting, to costume design, to set design, to music, to ongoing overall program quality, have been largely overlooked and gone unrewarded - and probably unviewed - by multiple award juries, I suspect because of what I view as an industry bias against this show’s perceived romance/fantasy-only genre, the thinking being that the category is Drama (good), not Romance (bad). This misperception of the show is accompanied by another: The original sin of stunning handsomeness-and-magnetism-in-a-kilt committed by the lead male actor disqualifies him for serious consideration of anything. (Female Drool is also not a category, or he clearly would have won multiple awards by now.) “He must be a male model who can’t act”. I believe the thinking is that female beauty is acceptable for quality shows. Male beauty in a lead, however, tends to be viewed as an indication that he is incapable of quality or so-called gritty performances, and the actor may be dismissed out of hand - again, amid performances unviewed - as a lightweight. I readily admit that these were indeed my own first thoughts when I viewed an initial promo with more than a little scorn. Only the persistent intervention of a trusted niece (and even she was a little embarrassed about it) eventually drew me into the program. I think the ripened season 5 of this show ranks right up there with seasons 1, 2, and especially the first episode of season 3 (for which Sam should have been awarded the first of his Emmys). In many respects, the quality of season 5 exceeds that of the acclaimed season 1 and builds as the season progresses. Episodes 7, 9, and 12 are as good as it’s going to get for a televised series (yes , even [especially?] Game of Thrones). I think it outranks in production value, overall quality, and certainly in acting most movies considered to be very good. And yet I note that for this 5th season (regrettably a season for which shows are seldom revisited for awards unless they have already won), Sam, Cait, and Richard, and indeed multiple deserving aspects of the show itself, are not to be found in Emmy discussions. The basis of the awards themselves needs to be re-evaluated. An un-viewed show will obviously never be a candidate for anything. How ironic is it that Tobias Menzies, an actor of great sensibilities and skill, may be awarded an Emmy for his performance on The Crown, a respected show, for an excellent performance, but one which is clearly overshadowed by his amazingly intricate performance(s) on Outlander, a non-respected show on a non-respected network?
I watched The Crown. It was good, but not as gripping as Outlander. I only watch the news, and we watch 20\20 on The television generally. I watch Outlander on my I Pad. I am embarrassed to admit that I have 2 , for when I fail to recharge for some reason. If that fails, I would have to “borrow” my husband’s device. Not a good idea, generally.😅 god forbid I should screw up some of his stuff.🤪 such a great show.
I couldn't agree more. I was extremely pleased when one of the most respected newspapers in my country (Denmark, and the paper was Berlingske) had an article about "Why Outlander was the paper's favorite TV show" a few weeks ago (august 2021.) The critic (who was male) pointed out all the same issues that you point out and basically told people to seriously consider Outlander instead of automatically dissing it as a romantic silly show of low quality. It truly isn't and Sam Heughan's delivered so many award deserving performances during this show. As has Caitriona Balfe. I loved season 5 so much due to the many truly moving performances. Personally, I rank the seasons as follows: 5, 3, 1, 2, 4.
I am in awe....Diana did such an amazing job with this story. Sam and Cait have done such an excellent job at portraying these people in such a beautiful way. This was such a great interview. I hope after Outlander ends that the main set of actor's can stay in touch. I think there friendships have all grown over the course of this and it shows in every season.

Awesome interview with people I have grown to really admire and enjoy. Outlander is the first show that has opened itself up to not only excellence of performances and production on all levels but the cast members have shared their journey and personality with the viewers. It has been more than a tv watching experience to all who partake and I thank you all for your generosity. I hope you are able to continue on soon with the next season and I really do thank you for what you have given your fans already. Be safe and stay healthy, peace and grace to our troubled world.

If I could abandon the book I would have Clair, Bree and Roger take Jamie forward to modern Lallybroch . Home to all of them, despite the different time zones. I think his personality would really enjoy the 20th century. But Diana doesn't want that and it's her story.

Agreed! But more importantly, Claire’s sense of humor is non-existent!!! She is SO FUNNY in the books and it’s almost entirely lost in the show (not Cait’s fault whatsoever-she’s awesome).
The question about "throwing out the book" for me I would love to see Jamie in modern time. A la "Pandaemonium" with Linus Roache, "Dracula Untold" with Luke Evans, and "New Amsterdam" with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau where their characters were thrust into modern times. To see Jamie reacting to cars, trains, etc. The scene in "Lallybroch" where Jamie is asking about planes makes me want to see him there. So if I could throw out the book, I would love to see Jamie in the early 70s with Claire, Bree, Roger, and Jemmy. Perhaps living in a modern day Lallybroch or in the Boston apartment.
Sam showed his emotion when asked what do you learned. 22:37 After answering “nothing and everything “, he was trying to control his emotion a lot. May be he was hurt.

There was no need for an offensive graphic horribly sadist display of such psychopathology . One that truly trespasses the cruelty threshold of so many of us fans.
I am probably in the minority here, but while the episode was beautifully designed and acted, I really didn’t like the gang rape. Why make it worse than what it was in the books? What happens to her in the books is bad enough. Moreover, and I’m sure I’m going to get yelled at here, but as a person who teaches history this felt like a 21st century attitude towards rape that wouldn’t have happened in the 18th century. Claire is a World War II English combat nurse. That generation is stoic, and Claire is a person who doesn’t lose her head-so showing her as “out of it” and leaving her head was not realistic to me. She was going to stay alive and do what she needed to do until Jamie could get to her. I’m not denying the trauma aspect of it-how could I? But this felt like a plot device to allow them to go into the 1960s and offer some stunning visualization. Just my opinion.
I mean this kindly and do not wish to wound you, but obviously you have not been raped and don’t realize how common this was then and how common it is now. Anyone who has been raped loses their head. I am grateful that this was depicted realistically but not very graphically. I think this episode was meant not to trigger but perhaps to comfort those who have experienced this and feel odd or crazy, alone, and “different” in their reactions to this terrible event in their lives. I thought the episode was brutal but real, Jamie’s reaction was a natural out-of-his mind rage, but at the same time, there was a remarkable gentleness and loving acceptance depicted in the episode. Simply a much needed real and extraordinarily reassuring depiction to all those victims out there and all around us who feel so alone with their strange raw feelings ... there are others who understand. This will go on into season six (because it must). I think victims watching this will feel comforted and not alone so much.
@@Lvps absolutely. It is an instinctual survival mechanism that operates independent of conscious thought to preserve a human's spirit despite what is happening to their physical body.

This was not a good interview. “Twisted and distorted victory in favor of gender equality”... It should not be regarded as gender equality, but more depriving the actor of male privilege and identity. It is never a good thing to raise to prominence by mercilessly putting the other down. How can this be a victory or equality at all? This must change... Caitriona?

They both look sad, especially at the beginning...
To throw out the book, Scotland, cait, Sam sex and scotland
Jaime was raped viciously in prison, I think that was very tough, although Claire was attacked by several people, not sure

Cler y sam es como.una patada 🎉
MKFD what was the books description of the rape?
Caitriona?
Absolute twaddle!
