  • We are thrilled to introduce the "Pulsar" series of oversize pistons. The "Pulsar" series pistons are derived from the original ART cast aluminum pistons used new from Honda. However, with the advances in modern manufacturing processes, we have added a number of performance improvements to the original designs.

    CB360 / CL360 / CJ360 "Pulsar" Series Pistons: www.common-motor.com/oversize...
    CB450 / CL450 "Pulsar" Series Pistons: www.common-motor.com/oversize...
    CB550K / CB550F "Pulsar" Series Pistons: www.common-motor.com/oversize...
    Each "Pulsar" piston is made from pressure-cast aluminum and CNC finished machined.
    Piston skirts feature a MoS2 (molybdenum di-sulfide) dry film lubricant anti-friction coating applied to the aluminum surface to reduce wear and scuffing.
    Piston crown and the top ring groove have a high temperature hard anodization applied to the surfaces to increase overall piston durability and thermal transfer (important in an air cooled engine) as well as prevent the top ring from micro welding (aka getting "stuck") into the ring groove.
    Speaking of rings, the "Pulsar" series pistons include modern piston rings to improve sealing, ease of installation, and ensure long service life. Each ring set includes:
    The top ring (silver) is forged steel with a gas nitride coating. This is a hard coating process that permeates all surfaces of the ring, increasing wear resistance and reducing the coefficient of friction on the cylinder walls.
    Steel phosphate coated 2nd ring (black).
    A three piece oil ring, which makes easy installation on the piston and into the cylinder assembly (A LOT easier than cast iron one piece oil rings). Top and bottom rails of the oil ring are also gas nitride coated.
    In addition, the "Pulsar" series pistons kits also include correct length writs pins (gudgeon pin) and the proper "C" style retaining clips, for correct fit with minimal pin slop.

    I've got a 360 and I've been very curious about doing the 'CB 378' conversion by using GS 850 pistons. That's been quite popular all over the forums but finding a reliable set of NOS GS 850 pistons doesn't seem possible anymore. Perhaps if/when my bike needs a rebuild I can go with these instead. The Temptation of the extra cc's and compression is strong though!

      See my reply on the above comment. It's more sizzle than steak.

      @@Common-motor Yeah the 6% extra displacement isn't a ton, but I guess the bump in displacement + the change in the piston dome of the GS 850 gives higher compression. Combined with a supposedly lighter piston (revs easier?) it has the lore of a really fun upgrade for a 360. Either way, fresh pistons are going to be a performance and reliability upgrade over tired low compression ones, and using these is probably an easier process than doing the conversion (less changes to gaskets, etc).

    No CB350F pistons?

    Sucks, I rebuild my bike 2 years ago and could have used these. I ordered some pistons from Japan and the guy didnt send me the piston rings, so I had to find some rings that fit it. Compression is a bit low but bike runs well. I may have to pick up some of these for when I rebuild it again someday.

    Great video. Always wanted to know more about replacing pistons. The CB350 out of the factory is about 325. Will these pistons give more power?

    • @Common-motor
      @Common-motor  Рік тому +1

      Short answer is no, as they are intended for a factory spec rebuild. Increasing displacement can help make more power, but with the relative size of these engines even an increase of 50cc will only make a marginal different in any measurable power output. However if your engine has low compression from wear, over boring the cylinders and new rings and pistons will restore factory level engine performance.

    We need Camshafts for these engines... are you working on that? without a reliable source of cams or a reputable company to regrind used ones and provide matching rocker arms, these pistons will be worthless in a few short years.

      Thats a tougher problem to crack but we have a few things in the works to hopefully have that piece solved.

    Got a question , you will no doubt know , and correct me , my understanding re the 450 dohc twin and 500 dohc twin is/was the capacity increase was achieved by increasing the stroke ? and used the same pistons/rings etc ? question is, is that correct or was the capacity increase achieved by bigger pistons/bore .

    • @Common-motor
      @Common-motor  Рік тому

      Close! The CB500T used a different crankshaft and pistons to achieve the longer stroke. Unfortunately because of the change in the crankshaft and pistons, 450 pistons cannot be used in a 500T and vice versa.

    since these pistons are CNC machined, do they come as a balanced pair ?

    • @Common-motor
      @Common-motor  Рік тому +1

      I believe what you are asking is if they are weight matched sets. The weights are very consistent across-the-board and have very tight +/- tolerance over the original Honda pistons. For stock street machine rebuilds they are better than the originals.

    • @72vespa
      @72vespa Рік тому

      @@Common-motor yes, weight matched is what I meant. looks like an awesome complete set and look forward to ordering a set of these and many other parts for my CL175 rebuild when I finally dig into that project.
