The way Jaby was laughing at 31:40 had me dying laughing!!!!
Shame that Vivian didn't do the same. Maybe because she hasn't seen Rambo and didn't realise it was a parody of that character? " I don't want to do this anymore. It's too much, I'm too old." You're never too old to laugh.
His laughs confuse me I don’t know if there fake I don’t know
@@mynameisnotearl4383 Well revenue is involved so..........laugh it up, get those likes.
Now you have to watch the Key & Peele sketch about how they brainstormed this sequel
You are a psychopath. Never let this city take that away from
you.
This is legitimately one of my favorite sequels ever made. It's so nutty that I think it's brilliant.
Agree
How much drugs were the writers on? Yes
The fact that you didn't recognize SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE on sight is sad. And darn near unforgiveable.😑
isn't it a capital crime to fail to recognize the absolute legend that is Christopher Lee?
They definitely need to watch a few Hammer horror movies!
Quite sad indeed !
Christopher Lee fought in WWII against USSR as a british detached to the finish army then as RAF against Rommel's africa corps. As an actor he is featured in almost 300 movies (!!!) and if one should only remember his latest roles let it be LOTR Saruman rather than count Dooku.
@@jeffwenberg4321Absolutely!!! Those were the best movies to watch on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
They totaly recognized him just had trouble with his name.
Adults trying to find logic and sense in a live action looney tunes film will never stop being funny.
The movie critic getting attacked is Leonard Maltin, and he was pretty big in the day. He was quoting his own review of the first movie. I think Joe Dante reached out to him about the part to show no hard feelings and Maltin thought it would be really funny.
Afaik they're actually friends.
@@eXpriest This is true, they are and were friends. But Maltin notoriously *hated* the first movie, and felt kind of bad about it because it was his friend's film. So when he was offered the bit in the sequel, he happily agreed to do it.
Its funny you guys mentioned the PG rating for the first one, because the first gremlins movie is actually one of the major reasons PG-13 was created. A bunch of parents took their kids to see this PG movie with a cute fuzzy critter that ended up going completely off the rails 😂
No one is prepared for the Hulk Hogan cameo.
the home video version was John Wayne, i never saw Hogan till the movie came on TV
I can never hear “New York, New York” during New Year’s Eve without thinking of that scene from this movie.
That is me
Too bad none of it made the cut :(
The twins are Don and Dan Stanton. They were also in Good Morning Vietnam as the Army censors.
"Why would mimes end up in lockup?" Because there was justice back then.
The Asian camera guy was already in SAG. He's Geddy Watanabe, who played Long Duk Dong in Sixteen Candles.
For all of his ‘Asian’ accented characters, he‘s from Utah and has the most Utah guy accent ever lmao
Haviland Morris(Marla) was also in Sixteen Candles.
Also, many serious actors get tired of being serious and deep. Sometimes they just want to have fun!
Believe it or not, that wacko Gremlin was voiced by the guy who voiced Jabba's crazy pet, Salacious Crumb. The actor passed away not too long ago.
Cool fact!
Rumor says Dante didn't want to make a sequel to Gremlins, so he just went full satire for this sequel. He just threw everything and the kitchen sink in there.
Yep! Joe Dante totally didn’t want to do it, but Warner Bros. DESPERATELY wanted a sequel, and offered him full creative control and final cut. He signed on, and thankfully so; it really is one of the best, and most batshit and wonderfully crazy, sequels of all time.
@@jasoncinema Reminds me how much Cannon Films wanted a sequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Tobe Hooper decided to do make a sequel that was VERY different in tone and everything. I love TCM 2 just because its batshit insane on so many levels compared to the original film.
@@alucard624 Yep! Tobe did what we wanted. Some people carp that it’s not a carbon copy of the first film or whatever, but it’s like, you can’t emulate that first film. It’s a masterpiece in and of itself.
You MUST watch Jordan Peele's version of what happened in the writers room for this movie. It's exactly as you described.
This movie is purposely bananas in the greatest way.
Funny how they said john glovers character is like a political super villain when he later plays lionel luther in Smallville
Getting racial on Gremlins 1 and 2 is another level of a lack of sense of humor.
100%
Yeah, that was painful. Super woke!
"Giver of warmth, destroyer of forrests". 😂😂😂😂
"Right now, this comment is on fire."
I love the Googly Eyed Gremlin Phoebe picks up instead of Gizmo. His wild laughter just cracks me up hard, he laughs just like I do when my girlfriend tickles me. 😂😂😂😂
I do like how much he was enjoying himself. He was having a great time with the most ordinary things.
The red haired woman, Haviland Morris, was born in NJ. Far from Australia 😅
I loved this film as a kid and way more entertaining than the original for me. From what I heard the director didn't want to make a sequel but the studio pushed and he only agreed after they let him take it in new direction. Also, the film critic was Leonard Maltin (pretty well known at the time) who trashed the original in his review so it's a fun meta cameo.
Wat do you mean the performances are so 90s the 90s had great acting
The four new Mogwai all had names, although they were never said on screen. The grumpy looking one and the buck-toothed one are named George and Lenny, because their appearance and personality are taken from the two main character in "Of Mice and Men". The googly-eyed one is named Daffy (after Daffy Duck, obviously) and the scary one is named Mohawk. He's apparently a reincarnation of Stripe from the first movie, which is why he likes torturing Gizmo so much.
Don't forget Gretta Gremlin :D
Between the the Twins and Mr Clamp you have your unconnected Robocop vs Terminator. Mr Clamp actor had a bit role in a lethal car security commercial
Best part of this movie was all the different personalities given to the different gremlins.
4:45
Fun fact: the actress who plays Marla (the redhead lady) is the voice of Korben Dallas' mother on the phone in The Fifth Element
She was also in 'Sixteen Candles' with Molly Ringwald & Anthony Michael Hall and she played the mom in 'Home Alone 3' with a young Scarlett Johansson.
Isn't she younger than him? lol
@@sproductionsincI mean
It was just her voice on the phone 🤣🤷🏼♂️
I always knew her voice sounded familiar in the 5th Element but could never place it. Totally love it ❤ maybe she the reason I love both movies.
Willlldd
I saw that scene in the theater as a kid. Yes, as a kid, was different back then and it was amazing!
I thankfully saw this in theaters with the Hulk Hogan version and again when it first came out on VHS which had the John Wayne version where the Gremlins break the TV instead of movie projector. Brilliant.
And the novelisation had the Brain Gremlin locking up the writer and taking over for a while.
Christopher Lee played the best Count Dracula too. Way back in 1958. And the first two sequels were good too. They came up with great ways to kill him off each movie too.
Did you see how Billy broke character walking away from the camera when she said " Now I Have Another Reason To Hate Christmas ".😂!!!
Love how Zach Galligan pointed that out in the DVD commentary because of how ridiculous her speech was this time.
Probably the most Joe Dante movie Joe Dante ever made, sending up his own original movie and going full on looney tunes madcap bonkers in the process. Love it.
29:14: The novelisation of the original movie included a prologue which stated that the Mogwai were genetically engineered by an alien species. They were intended to be pets, but it all went horribly wrong.
Couple of cool things.. Kingston falls is actually hill valley from back to the future and this was awesome in the theater. Everyone thought the film broke at first and I would say that's one of the best 4th wall breaks
The guy that did the voice for that little creature in star wars did some of the voices of the Gremlins and sadly he passed away and I really loved watching this in the theater as a kid lol
That janitor that got Giz wet was John Astin, guys. Gomez Addams from the OG Addams Family..
No the accent is not Australian it is an artificial accent that used to be taught(think 1950s and 60s) in expensive prep schools and ivy league colleges on the US east coast.
Mixed with her own accent. She's from New Jersey
You guys should watch the Key & Peele - "Gremlins 2" Brainstorm - Uncensored.
I love this movie. It's sheer, unadulterated chaos. The Looney Tunes opening is so appropriate, and sets the tone right from the start.
I saw this at a sneak preview, the night before it officially opened. We were *completely* suckered in by the "film breaking" bit.
The studio really wanted a sequel. The first raked in cash, and they saw dollar signs. The writer didn't want to do it. They told him we'll give you creative freedom. He said okay, they want a sequel? Let's give them one that completely deconstructs the franchise.
From what I've seen, people who were wanting a movie like the first one usually don't like this movie as much. I'd put your review in that category. Other people, such as myself, thoroughly enjoy the "nudge nudge wink wink" aspect of this, where they are basically spoofing themselves, and letting the audience in on the joke from the opening on the film.
You may have seen those twins in Good Morning Vietnam. If you haven't seen that one, you should.
Robert Prosky was in a lot of movies over four decades. Some of them were pretty high-budget, dramatic films, but I'll always remember him from this and Last Action Hero.
Gedde Watanabe seemed to make a career out of playing over the top stereotypes of Japanese people throughout the 80s and early 90s, starting as Long Duk Dong in Sixteen Candles, and in a prominent role in Weird Al's UHF. Younger audiences won't recognize him because it was voice only, but might know him as Ling in Mulan and Mulan II.
Ah... the great Christopher Lee. Count Dooku? How about freaking SARUMAN! And of course all of those great Hammer horror films. But for a really good one, check out the original (not the Cage remake) of The Wicker Man.
This is one of those movies where the human characters are given attention, but I think some people mistake them as the main characters. There’s a reason why it’s called Gremlins. If you look at it this way, Billy and the other humans are the antagonists who are ensuring that a whole civilization doesn’t thrive, and they actually succeed.
Clamp is the friendly Trump... sort of. I feel like his character was supposed to be more evil but they changed it because John Glover is just so funny and cool.
The director only agreed to make a sequel if he could do ANYTHING he wanted.
The T2 twins and “damn it, I’m a doctor, not a door stop” in the same movie. Magical. And of course, Count Dooku, can’t forget him.
Jaby, you and a cinepal should see the first two seasons of Jackie Chan Adventures. It's been so many years since I last saw them but I can pretty much guarantee you'll hear an Ai-Ya at least once per episode. Sometimes more. There's a gong in the intro. The last 3 seasons were fine but I think they had budget cuts that affected them. Most people fell off after season 2 as well. It's basically a show where the Rush Hour character has the lead role. (not literally, just how he acts.) It's just a beloved show of the late 90s.
I second this. That show was awesome
The red head is Haviland Morris, born in New Jersey. She was also in Sixteen Candles
And she was the mom in Home Alone 3...
My favorite sequel. Even better than the first
I think a modern Gremlins movie as a satire on the current social issues would be great. Just ultra violent but totally insane whacky would really work.
No. I don't want your woke Gremlins
Fun facts:
The "New Batch"are, by introduction: Lenny(the buck toothed one), George(the grim looking friend(with the two named for the main characters of "Of Mice and Men"), Daffy(the insane one)and Mohawk(who is said to be a reincarnated Stripe).
Aww, the new design for Gizmo is adorable. Thought he looked so much more cute than he did in the original.
24:56, lmao at the gremlins mocking him.
Okay, so for starters, PG-13 didn't exist when the first Gremlins was released. In fact, Gremlins is one of the films credited with the creation of that rating.
Beyond that:
- According to the novelizations, Mogwai are a genetically modified alien species who were designed to be supremely adaptable. Unfortunately, they proved a little too adaptable, easily transforming into the destructive and nihilistic gremlins.
- Daniel Clamp was envisioned as a synthesis of Ted Turner and Donald Trump. Interestingly, in the original script he *did* have political aspirations, but they were mostly cut for time.
- Meh, Kate didn't spend a lot of time with Gizmo in the first film and when they were together it was pretty dark... Incidentally, the 'main' mogwai this time around were: George, Lenny, Daffy, and Mohawk.
- Joe Dante is a very meta director and Gremlins 2 is basically his personality on film. Apparently part of Lee's reason for appearing here was that he enjoyed working with Dante on 'The Howling'.
Hello Jaby & Vivian!😊 Christopher Lee (Doctor Catheter) is known by a certain generation as UK's Hammer films "Dracula" in many films in the 60s - 70s. Hence, the scene with the Bat Gremlin. The twin dudes were also in "Good Morning Vietnam". Robert Picardo (Forster) was actually a pretty nice guy as the EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) on TV's "Star Trek: Voyager". The Brain Gremlin is voiced by American actor Tony Randall probably best know from the 70s TV sitcom "The Odd Couple".
36:00 two minutes of WTF.
It's so tiring.
Close, Jurassic Park came out nearly 3yrs later in '93.
Daniel Clamp I hope that he comes back for Gremlins 3!, I asked John Glover recently, and he said that he would be up for it, hopefully it will happen been too long since we had some Gremlin mischief!.. 😉🎬
It makes me feel so old when younger viewers react oddly to the Mid-Atlantic accent aka old timey radio and movie voice. You also see it in some reactions to Julianne Moore's character in Big Lebowski.
You were projecting.
Christopher Lee is a LEGEND!!! Everything from LotR, Star Wars, Shakespeare, to old horror and newer Tim Burton flicks, to singing heavy metal, to seeing hardcore combat in WWII. Seriously check him out! RIP.
The movie bombed in theaters, but it made a lot of money in videoclubs. Many movies were profitable thanks to videoclubs.
Other sequels released the same year as this include Die Hard 2, Predator 2 and RoboCop 2. Prior to this, Christopher Lee was primarily known for his portrayal of Count Dracula. The animated series Gremlins: Rise of the Mogwai shows the origins of the titular creatures and Gizmo's friendship with the shop owner
Zero racism in this movie
You are deluded
She seems projecting
True, I saw no racism way back then and I see no racism in the first or second one now whatsoever.
This is a great sequel so underrated
The VHS Version of this movie had a different in-between version instead of Hulk Hogan you got an edited version of John Wayne and someone doing an impression of him as his voice. It ends by killing three gremlins and telling us to go back to the film.
Tony Randall voiced the smart Gremlin. He's best known for being one half of the duo on the show The Odd Couple.
I had forgotten how hilarious this movie is. I haven't laughed this hard in a long while. Glad you enjoyed! Can't say I've seen any other channel react to this xD
Great reaction to this fun classic you two....
Another thing I like about Gremlins 2 are all the cameos & the satire/parody humor.
the Leonard Maitlin cameo is legendary
@@synaesthesia2010 - for sure...
Great reaction apart from them projecting
10:31 Haviland Morris was born in Loch Arbour, New Jersey but raised during her childhood in Hong Kong and Singapore. That's why her accent seems off.
"With more control over the film, Dante engineered a project that he later referred to as 'one of the more unconventional studio pictures, ever.' Dante included some material that he believed Warner Bros. would not have allowed had they not wanted a sequel to Gremlins. Allowed to break a number of rules in filmmaking, he also later claimed it was the film into which he had put the most of his personal influence. Dante imagined Gremlins 2: The New Batch as a satire of Gremlins and sequels in general."
It's so weird precisely because it's a meta-satire of itself.
Personally, I think the reason this is even remembered as fondly as it is, is no small part due to nostalgia. Because after enough years to get over that it wasn't a serious follow-on sequel, you end up letting the humor sorta wash over you, like with B-movies.
I for one would like to see a Gremlins 3 that's a return to the much darker and haunting horror-leaning comedy horror like the first film than this very comedy-leaning comedy horror. More of the mythos of the mogwai.
Me and my buddy saw this in an empty theatre back when, and despite the shift in tone from the first film, had a gas watching it. Thanks for the reaction!
I love these versions of the gremlins
The bucktooth one is Lenny.
The one that has the cigar in his mouth that was always hanging out with Lenny was George.
Mohawk was the very evil one
The crazy one was Daffy.
Tony Randall did the voice of Brain(the gremlin that could talk in complete sentences).
Howie Mandel returned as the voice of Gizmo.
It was 5 years between these movies, by which time the Gremlins fad had faded. But the studio really wanted to make a sequel, they tried but couldn't get ideas for a movie. In the end they reapproached the director Joe Dante - he didn't want to make another but the studio said he could do anything he wanted. - And he did.
The question I've always had since I was a kid was when it was ok to start feeding them again. 8am? After all, it's always technically "after midnight". Except right at. 😆
17:31 She apologized because she realized she had made a mistake and took responsibility for it. In the first movie, she was around Gizmo enough to recognize him even after not seeing him for a long time. The reason why she was distracted is because she saw Billy with that other woman, but that wasn't his intention nor his fault. So, in conclusion, it was her fault for not realizing that the Goofy one was not Gizmo and she took responsibility for that mistake.
The reason Daffy, the googly eyed Mogwai/Gremlin sounds so much like Salacious Crumb (Jabba's cackling pet) is because they were voice by the same performer.Mark Dodson. Sadly, he passed away last month.
Such an underrated movie
I saw this in the theater and the film break was amazing. Nothing like that have ever been done.
There was recently an animated show that reveals the origin of the Mogwai and how Mr Wing first met Gizmo as a kid
List of people who saw Gremlins and were reminded of black people:
- Clan Members
- Vivian
This was a fun movie. Unfortunately it's comedy is lost of folks.
Legend Tony Randall voiced Brain.
First saw this back in the 8th grade. We watched it in English class right before Christmas break.
Didn't like it as much as the first so I never rewatched it until a few months ago. Really enjoyed it
Red Dawn, the very first PG-13 movie, came out in August of 1984. Gremlins came out in June. So, the rating wasn't created yet.
Best film ever made. My absolute favorite.
33:30 Funny Fact: They actually made those during that time and they sold like crazy.
Chris Columbus also directed "Home Alone"
The first Gremlins and Raiders of the Lost Arc were both rated PG before there was a PG-13.rating. Both movies heavily contributed to the need for a new rating category.
One of the best sequels imo is Gremlins 2 !! I kinda love it more than the first one for a couple of reasons .
This is a TRUE Joe Dante film! Lol
The twins from Terminator 2 and Good Morning Vietnam!!! And SARUMAN!! And Tuco! And the dude from The Burbs! The dude from stargate and star trek! And the cop from Ace Ventura! Theres a lot of good people in there.
John Glover did play a supervillain of sorts. He was in Smallville as Lex Luthor's father, Lionel. Driven, ambitious and awful curious about this Clark Kent fellow.
25:00 Leonard Malton was a critic and friend of Joe Dante the director. He did give the first Gremlins a bad review. And because they were friends did a cameo in the sequel.
I wish the younger generations could just enjoy something without trying to look for some kind of political or racial issue. I actually enjoyed the reaction and probably should’ve stopped once the movie ended. People actively looking for that kind of thing, for whatever reason, is a big part of the problems of today. Just enjoy the movie for what it is.
When the two of them started reaching for racial theories, they made themselves look like ridiculous caricatures of idiot millennials.
The two twins were also in Terminator as police officers.
The Political Super Villain, is Lex Luthor's Father.
21:25
That's what happens when you ask stupid questions
They make a lot of references. A lot you probably didn’t get. In both the first and second films.
They also purposefully take the Mick (hence the Gong in the first film)
It’s making fun of the tropes and popular stuff of the times.
They announced they're actually making Gremlins 3
7:58
Laboratory on floor 51 ayyy? lol
10:24
The redhead actress was a blond bombshell in Bob Clark's "16 Candles".
11:48

Lot's of iconic stars so far.

The late great Tony Randall(tv's Odd Couple)
28:19
YES, it's "16 Candles" Long Duck Dong!!!
31:04
Iconic scene...."Is it Safe?" Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man.
33:35
Got one, had it on my 92 S-10 pickup back window.......named Garfield.
There are a ton of films produced by Steven Spielberg like Innerspace.
I honestly don’t get what you’re talking about with the ethnic stuff. I get the gong from the first movie but otherwise I don’t see it.
The Batman logo is funny because the owner of the building is Lex Luthor's dad.
This has been my observation often G, PG, PG-13, R was very different in the 80s vs today.
Count Duku AND The White Wizard Sauromon is in the lab, yay!
Finally! I've been waiting to see your reaction to this!
