The mascot guy doesn't come out of nowhere. It makes sense if you think about his story arc. But no one is paying attention to him.
Scared, shy boy is locked in a room with a girl he likes. He chickens out of kissing her an she covers for him. Now he is infatuated.
He then seems to get over being shy an becomes the mascot. Or he became the mascot to force himself to be more outgoing.
As the mascot she talks to him. He keeps bumping in to her an hitting on her but she doesn't show interest. So he plays it off with the friend stuff. The friendly mascot guy is his fallback safe space.
He ditched a wedding rehearsal to go to a party, just to bump in to her. She leaves when they do.
He brings up the kiss at the pool, trying to tell her he knows whats really going on. Tells her they could have tried again. She completely misses it, so he does the friend thing again an. He thinks hes being shot down.
In the car he brings it up again. He then says he regrets not kissing her. Her being mad at her friend, she lets slip that she likes him. He is shocked. Until that point he thought she was just being friendly. Now that he knows, he immediately asks to kiss her.
Not long in to her stream, she talks about two classic romantic movies. He knows those movies, which says a lot. He then stops watching the stream, finds a mp3 player, downloads a song, steals a mower an drives it to her house.
He is the kind of guy that does not ask girls out until they give him a sign they will say yes, but once he has that, he goes all out. But she is so busy hiding her feelings that she misses it until then. An we miss it because we think hes background until then.

I didn't think about that - thank you for raising that point. SHE GAVE the student Chlamydia but she hadn't slept with her husband in over 6 months, it didn't come from him. Which means she has been having other affairs before getting with the student. She told the story to Olive as if this was the only affair that she had out of desperation but her timeline doesn't work - she is still lying.

Great reaction - Jaby's sense of fun is contagious, and it's great to see Steph reacting to something like this, very incisive, tho she seems uncomfortable - I just realized watching this again that this is almost a prequel to Poor Things, and Emma Stone's role almost feels like preparation for it - Easy A is very strong as a response to Hawthorne and a contemporary riff on those themes - ppl should see the 1926 film that's excerpted here, from the great Victor Sjostrom, w incredible performances from Lillian Gish and Lars Hanson - also react to Eighth Grade, Thirteen, and Booksmart

As one of those "born again" types, I will say that there are definitely self-righteous sorts like you see in this movie, and some who put on an act because they think they're supposed to be happy all the time. But most aren't. There is genuinely a lot of joy to be had, especially when you really understand the message. Because then your joy doesn't depend on your external circumstances

I'm Gen Z 80's kid dude who grew up on the cinema of teen machine John Hughes and the Brat Pack during my formative years. One of the two biggest modern movies that seem like spiritual cousins to that era of rite of passage movies is this Easy A. I saw it three times opening weekend and thought it was an instant classic in the teen angst genre and Emna Stone was and is a one woman show force of nature giving a break out go for broke tour de force performance and complete big ball of talent savage. It's lost none of its charm and power. This is the cinematic equivalent of a bottle of Perkocet. You'll OD on happiness. The other film is 2017's The Edge Of Seventeen where Hailee Steinfeld pulls off a similar feet as Stone and just owns that movie start to finish showing all her range and its considerable and immense. Check that one out. Woody Harrelson as a cynical teacher and her's scenes are transcendent.

Sad thing is being hot in high school doesn't make you a sure thing if you can't sell it. When I went through high school I had zero self worth and zero self confidence so I went through the whole thing single AF. If anyone did talk to me outside of my friend group I didn't believe a thing they said I thought they were just being ironic because it's the late 90's and ironic sarcasm is how people talked. Even in my friend group I got one compliment I held on to because they were in a terrible spot and not in a place to joke so I knew that one was real the rest I blew off as jokes. It wouldn't be for another 20-ish years I realized what I had a shot at and lost somewhere around the 39/40 mark I saw a picture of myself it was either in high school or just after and I can't believe how stupidly 90's HOT I was externally, if I had just a tiny bit of confidence it was over but I didn't so it was all Ogre.

"Counselors in high school do not listen" - oh boy do I have an axe. When I was in school, few teachers and no administrators ever listened to be about my situation at home and the abuse I dealt with on a daily basis. I was bullied and harassed by students and teachers at school as well, so they didn't want to hear any of it. One day, I was sent to the office and met the new counselor - she was fresh out of college and eager to help. I told her I had trouble, and she wanted to help! I felt so relieved and heard, I felt hopeful. She went to get my chart and while she was in the front office the other teachers convinced her that I was playing a prank on her and making her look stupid. They convinced her I was an asshole who was just trying to take advantage of her naivete, and when she returned she was angry at me and would not be convinced otherwise ... that was the last time I ever turned to anyone in my school for anything.
