I was a youngster when it came out and hid behind the couch because I was scared of the game. Even though I was scared I still tried to fight like the characters on the screen. This didn't stop me loving and playing the game, ofcourse!

I myself am a youngster but my Dad was smart and kept the SNES and 64 for ages after I was born in 2000. Let's just say if I had to pick one, I'd take KI over SF or MK any day.

Same, there had to be at least 15-20 people crammed together watching someone play as Sabrewulf, dude even did an ultra combo and everyone went nuts. Then I finally get the game for SNES and it's the most watered-down thing I've ever seen. Still kinda salty about that.
For me too, seeing a video game looking like that back in 1994 when all I knew were NES, SNES and Genesis games... blew my mind to orbit. I could simply not believe that it was an actual game I could play and that it wasn't any sort of "movie" or some kind of demonstration. Those graphics, sounds and overall game presentation remained top notch for at least 2 or 3 years to follow, or more. I don't think a game blew my mind like that for a couple of years until maybe I saw something like Star Wars Arcade (Trilogy) in around '98 or early '99.
From what I recall the RARE developers who worked on KI1 for Arcades somehow got access to the same computers that the guys who worked on the first Jurassic Park movie had; and NO ONE in the entire gaming industry had anything like that at their disposal to make video games in '93 / '94, they were the literal only ones with it (at least for a time, because it was extremely expensive obviously). It explains why KI1 (Arcade) remained untouched and was way ahead of its time for at least 2 years post-release, if not more. I would argue even games on the Nintendo 64 didn't look anywhere as good (but that's debatable I guess).
To this day I think that Killer Instinct is one of those genuine "HOLY SH_!!!!" moments, along with the likes of my first time seeing DOOM, or Star Fox, Super Mario 64 and a few select others.

This game is incredible in many ways, but its combo mechanics will always be the main highlight, there is nothing more satisfying than applying and hearing the narrator "scream" Ultra Combo.

Original arcade, ki2 is awesome but not the same
Still dreaming on making a remake of ki1 that's exactly the same as the arcade but with better graphics and the same sounds but remastered in Dolby Atmos or something.... Kinda like the resident evil 4 remake
And the guy's voice was perfect, but they went away from it for some reason.
The most impressive thing was that the characters were actually 2D sprites digitalized from highly detailed 3D models while the different stages were actually FMV movies that moved according to the movement of the sprites, thanks to those tricks this game looked much better than the real 3D games that competed with it at the arcades.
well this game was made by rare, the same one that made banjo kazooie and donkey kong country, so they were already used to making these graphics in CGI from sprites or FMV
I remember how loud this game was at the arcades in a good way. That fulgore machine gun would completely make everyone turn their heads toward the arcade.
The narrators voice will always be superb in my book!

Stellar graphics and sfx, incredible 3d backgrounds, innovative combos, legendary commentator. Needless to say this was my favourite arcade in late 90s

With this damage scaling, you're never truly out of hope for a come back!
The fight with Spinal it took literally 2 seconds and fulgore was almost dead in the beginning lol
Yea the damage scaling is ridiculous in this game lol 😂 But it took me a lil bit to realize that Fulgore and Spinal are sub bosses in the game so they do more damage than the average fighter on 1P

We all thought back then in 1994 that KI would look and play like the Arcade on the Ultra64 (N64) but sadly never did.
One of the biggest lies in video game history man, pretty sure many people bought a N64 thinking this game will be in the N64 with these graphics.
So dope watching someone who’s mastered the game play through it. Thoroughly entertaining all the way through. I grew up playing this game as a kid and had no idea stage had fatalities.
The arcades man the memories, you knew it was a new game out at the mall cause it would be damn near 30 people if not more hovering around the game and what always got me 😅 you always had a smart ass that knew all the moves , the combos , like how tf you know and the game just came out 😂

I remember walking up to this game for the first time. The guy was playing as Cinder and finished with a 88 hit combo. It sucks the arcade version never came to N64.
it really sucks actually we didn't saw killer instinct 1 as launch title for the Nintendo 64, at least on N64 exists the Killer instinct Gold, which is cut version of KI2

I remember crowds at the arcade playing this when it came out. Winner stays. Graphics look basic today, but I can still see it with the same eyes I had in the past. This and mk1-2 were the best. Killer instinct gold on n64 was great too, but those arcade memories are the best. Picture a dark arcade with fluorescent lights and the crowd around this game….pure happiness.

I remember walking into the arcade at crabtree valley mall in Raleigh, NC and I see like 10 folks at this machine, then all of a sudden I hear "ULTRA COMBO" it was so loud I had to see what it was!

Retro Fighters was a huge success, 1994 when there were game shops, those with tube TVs, I don't know if you got to know them, they sold for hours, I watched a lot of the fights that the guys from that time played, I went crazy to play too, but: at that time money was hard, I watched many of my colleagues play; 1 hour, 1 hour and 30 Half, very good video play of this super nintendo classic.
I still remember the hoards of teens that were crowded around this arcade with their arms folded, watching the players battle.😅
What made this game legendary was the announcer… co co co co co combo breaker!!

The Arcade version of KI & KI 2 were always better then the console versions, because the animations and graphics were way better, even though I grew up playing them on console.

The coolest part about this game is when you land the final hit and the screen zooms out showing the entire level you suddenly get that "out this world feeling"
The first time I saw this game and witnessed someone execute an ultra combo I was dumbfounded, thinking "how the hell can anyone ever come back from that!" at a time when 3 hit combos in MK were a thing.

The thing that doesn't feel right with me about the KI on xbox is that the screen doesn't zoom out when you move away (Thunder's stage as an example in the original), or how it does a crazy spin around (Cinder's stage). I rmb being so blown away when I first saw these features in the original arcade!!!!

Yo solo tuve la posibilidad de ver la version del Cerebro de la Bestia y recuerdo que venia con un CD con la banda sonora del juego pero flipaba solo con ver las imagenes de la recreativa en revis como Super Juegos, Micromania o Hobbyconsolas. Los 90 fueron increibles y se disfrutabamos de los juegos al igual que los desarrolladores que hacian los videojuegos porque les gustaba y no solo por dinero como es hoy en dia, siempre echare de menos los 90.

Considering the limitations the snes had at the time when this game was released for it the snes version was about 90 percent accurate to it's arcade predecessor.

I think every character has a rival. Jago-Fulgore, Saberwolf-Riptor, Orchid-Spinal, Thunder-TJ Combo, Glacius-Cinder.
I first see this in 94 it could still be the biggest jump in graphics from the street fighter and mk days I was blown away still could never do the combos.
