Same, there had to be at least 15-20 people crammed together watching someone play as Sabrewulf, dude even did an ultra combo and everyone went nuts. Then I finally get the game for SNES and it's the most watered-down thing I've ever seen. Still kinda salty about that.

    • @lyrand6408

For me too, seeing a video game looking like that back in 1994 when all I knew were NES, SNES and Genesis games... blew my mind to orbit. I could simply not believe that it was an actual game I could play and that it wasn't any sort of "movie" or some kind of demonstration. Those graphics, sounds and overall game presentation remained top notch for at least 2 or 3 years to follow, or more. I don't think a game blew my mind like that for a couple of years until maybe I saw something like Star Wars Arcade (Trilogy) in around '98 or early '99.
From what I recall the RARE developers who worked on KI1 for Arcades somehow got access to the same computers that the guys who worked on the first Jurassic Park movie had; and NO ONE in the entire gaming industry had anything like that at their disposal to make video games in '93 / '94, they were the literal only ones with it (at least for a time, because it was extremely expensive obviously). It explains why KI1 (Arcade) remained untouched and was way ahead of its time for at least 2 years post-release, if not more. I would argue even games on the Nintendo 64 didn't look anywhere as good (but that's debatable I guess).
To this day I think that Killer Instinct is one of those genuine "HOLY SH_!!!!" moments, along with the likes of my first time seeing DOOM, or Star Fox, Super Mario 64 and a few select others.

The most impressive thing was that the characters were actually 2D sprites digitalized from highly detailed 3D models while the different stages were actually FMV movies that moved according to the movement of the sprites, thanks to those tricks this game looked much better than the real 3D games that competed with it at the arcades.

When this game came out, the soundtrack (which the Arcades always had the volume up pretty high on) & the graphics blew people away. It wasn't Mortal Kombat & it wasn't a Capcom fighter but it definitely generated a lot of interest. Of course, the game is full of bugs & glitches but back then, that didn't really matter so much. Especially when it was new & people were trying to add numbers to their combos. I can't explain easily how big a deal it was, in example, to get a 30-hit Ultra with Jago instead of a 29. The 80-hit combos (where the hit counter would max out) were done solely via finding exploits. You can look them up on UA-cam as well. So even the bugs/glitches kind of worked in favor for the game when people were playing solo & going for big numbers to put their name on the scoreboard.
This game stayed really popular at my local arcade even after WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game & Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 showed up a year later. It wasn't until probably X-Men Vs. Street Fighter that interest started to wane which was a full two years later.
Our local crowds didn't get into Killer Instinct 2 so much.

The Arcade game was designed to maximize the volume of sound so as to gather a crowd in a strategic way. Let me explain:
It was a strategic move by the developers, where the arcade owners would test out the volume before putting the game in service -- the volume was designed to appear to be maximized, when it really wasn't.
As the battles intensified , the volume increased, surpassing the initial test. 😅
Everyone gathered around because of it.

Strange that the 'family friendly' Nintendo that censored the blood in SNES mortal Kombat put their name to such a brutal fighting game back then, but i'm so glad they did.

I first see this in 94 it could still be the biggest jump in graphics from the street fighter and mk days I was blown away still could never do the combos.
