  • Warith Deen Mohammed, the seventh son of Elijah and Clara Muhammad, was declared the new leader of the Nation of Islam at the annual Saviours' Day Convention in February 1975, a day after his father died. He made substantial changes in the organization in the late 1970s, taking most of its members into a closer relationship with orthodox Islam, and renaming the group "World Community of Islam in the West", and eventually renaming it the American Society of Muslims, to indicate the apparent changes which had occurred in the group.
He rejected the deification of the Nation of Islam's founder Wallace D. Fard as Allah in person, the Mahdi of the Holy Qur'an and the messiah of the Bible, welcomed white worshipers who were once considered devils and enemies in the NOI as equal brothers, sisters, and friends. At the beginning of these changes, Chief Min. Warith Deen Mohammed gave some Euro-Americans X's, and he extended efforts at inter-religious cooperation and outreach to Christians[32] and Jews.[33] He changed his position and title from Chief Minister Wallace Muhammad to Imam Warith Huddin Mohammad, and finally changed them to Imam Warith Al-Deen Mohammed.
Farrakhan joined Mohammed's movement and followed Imam Warith Al-Deen Mohammed, and eventually became a Sunni Imam under him for 3+1⁄2 years from 1975 to 1978. Imam Mohammed gave Imam Farrakhan the name Abdul-Haleem. In 1978, Imam Farrakhan distanced himself from Mohammed's movement.
In a 1990 interview with Emerge magazine, Farrakhan said that he had become disillusioned with Mohammed's movement and decided to "quietly walk away" from it rather than cause a schism among its members.[citation needed] In 1978, Farrakhan and a small number of supporters decided to rebuild what they considered the original Nation of Islam upon the foundations established by Wallace Fard Muhammad, and Elijah Muhammad. This decision was made without public announcement.

Maaaan, you can tell the Minister was trying his best but he was not feeling it. It was more intellectual skill on his part than passion for what he was actually saying.

Minister Farrakhan was really struggling with the new teachings. I’m glad he broke from Imam W.D. Muhammad. I learn one thing in life, don’t get caught up in anybody emotional dislikes.

I know the minister had to be struggling with WD Muhammad change of the Nations teachings. White people in the Nation of Islam, WOW. When the teaching teach that we can not reform Devil but only Allah himself can reform Devil. All Praises Are Due to Allah for Brother Jabril bringing the minister back to the real teachings of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad....

yup as he explains all this you can tell he don't like that shit. Farrakhan used to quote the Supreme Wisdom heavy before Elijah died, now he had to learn a whole new tune and wasn't into it. So like '77 my son said ENOUGH

now he promoting Scientology though, so who can say what the actual motivation was, smh. Maybe he just got tired of being second fiddle to a less charismatic leader and enough people from the First Resurrection was like "you got the juice now!"

Please remember, originally Minister Farrakhan was on his way to Hollywood pursue a career in entertainment, after he separated from Imam Mohammed. It wasn't until brother Jabrill spoke to Minister on the phone, that the Minister decided to rebuild the Nation. Rebuilding the Nation of Islam wasn't on his mind in 1977. Retrospect, I'm glad that he didn't go back into entertainment again.

In retrospect, I'm glad that the Minister Farrakhan broke away from Imam WD Muhammad. However, it wasn't purely about emotions. A muslim is one who submits their will to do the will of Allah (The One and Only God), not Master Fard Muhammad. The teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad was meant to clean-up, wake-up and reform the blackman and woman of America. However, what do you with a person(s) after this process is completed? Thus, Imam Muhammad wanted the community (NOI) to put into the religion of Islam into practice, as demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In terms of Minister Farrakhan, respectfully, it was more money and ego thing with him. The minister was taken out of one of biggest and most successful mosque (NY) in the Nation and put into a 5x7 office in Chicago, in 1975. He was taken out his power base in New York. When he left the Nation in 1977, he was going to pursue a career in Hollywood, not continue the teaching's of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. However, I'm glad he changed his mind, and resumed teaching again. To the minister's credit, he was able to reach people (in the streets) that the Imam couldn't reach. I say all of this as someone who was in the Nation prior to 1975. ☪️
