As a fun event, I put together an Easter egg hunt for my dog one year. It worked so well that he picked up "behind you!" "Left" "right" "under" and "above" without a concentrated effort to teach them. It's been 10 years since that first game, and it's something I've played with every other dog I've had since. And since he couldn't open the egg, it really proofed the "drop it" command.

Our newest game with our two dogs is the shell game. 3 plastic cups and their vitamin chews (they LOVE them!). They take turns watching as we hide a vit under one of the cups, "mix up the cups", then tell our doggie contestant to find it! Coco is confident enough in her sniffer she can't be bothered to watch....Marvel watches us like a hawk and goes right for it from his waiting spot across the room, no nose required!

I used to play this with my inlaws' GSD quite a bit, outside in a wooded area, often with the help of my husband or visiting family members. We'd hide in turns and the cue would be 'Go find (name)' and we'd often call out for her as well if it would take a bit longer for her to find us. It was great because she would run around between us, getting her all tired both physically and mentally. Sadly they have moved further away so we don't get to play as often anymore, but she still loves it when we do.
Great stuff! We only have a small apartment, so we had to get creative with our games. We got our Pippin to place, and watch us as we pretend 'hid' treats around the apartment. We only hid one treat at a time. We then released her to "find it!". Really got her to use her nose, she absolutely loved it.
That is POWERHOUSE enrichment. Great job!

This is our favourite game. That's actually how I taught him to come when called. Now it is impossible to hide from him because he always follows me around, unless I ask him to stay.
We play hide and seek with our family dog - it gets harder each time as she can remember all the places we have used before, we make a huge fuss of her when she finds us, she loves it. We do it on walks sometimes as well, she is very focused on the game so I haven't had an issue with her being distracted by anything else. If she had to be a working dog she should be a search and rescue dog.
I taught my dog to find treats and toys I hid in the house but I never considered playing Hide and Seek! This looks like a bunch of fun, I'm gonna give it a shot. Thank you

We play hide and seek but with her nose instead. She is two breeds of hunting dog but we don't hunt so we've come up with a hide and seek game for her scents. She will be in a separate room and i will in a diffrent room lay a treat for her to find. We start super easy out in the open to hard to find hidden in a small corner. She really enjoys it.

Great game. Tia and I play a game we call Treasure Hunt. Where I hide one of her toys and go back to her and say "Treasure Hunt". Then she goes and finds it and brings it back to me. . Lots of Fun. The same commands are used in hide and seek. Keep up the great work and thanks.

Hey! I would think you could probably do this with both Jake and Becca. Jake for sure won't tolerate you doing it without him, LOL. Maybe once the game is taught well you could up the stakes and have the best reward for the first one to find you. See how competitive they get. Actually, hide and seek for herding dogs is right in their wheelhouse. I suspect they'll both excel at this and really enjoy it. Let me know how it goes! Miss you guys!

How do you reverse it so that the dog hides and you seek?
I love your videos... I started playing this game with my Pit bull terrier as I live in a small ground floor apartment with a small yard and although I do a lot of walks and training with him I am always looking for ways to spark his mind and this has been so fun. I even do it at friends houses or go out to parks, where I think it is safe, and tell him to sit, then I go hide and he finds me, I am working on teaching him to go hide and then i look for him but watch him as he walks off to find a spot. My son and his Jack Russel have become pros at this game.
When I was 14 I used to pet sit/walk all the dogs on my block! I used to always teach them this exact game while dog sitting, I've never met a dog who doesn't love it! It's so cool to see this on your channel. :)

I love using a flirt pole with my dogs. I am disabled, and have a hard time getting around to exercise my dogs, especially my Great Pyrenees puppy, Bear. You can make one by buying either a rod and thin cord or a horse crop. With the rod and cord, drill a hole in the end of the rod and attach the cord. Then you attach (I just tie it) a dog toy to the end of whichever one you use. Then dangle the toy in front of your dog letting him catch it frequently or they will get bored and give up.
I've also had friends use this when the weather is bad as a way to exercise their dog without having to go outside. My dogs absolutely love it.
Hi Amanda. YES! Flirt poles are great. I've considered doing a flirt pole video, actually. We have a couple at the shelter and I made one for my dogs. They're pretty useful.

me and my dog play Tag and chase each other from one side of the house to the other ... she don't play fait all the time tho she cheats and turns around and starts chasing me before we make it half way
My parents dog is very good at hide and seek, she remembers all the places we hide, which makes it a mental challenge for us as well as her, she will also 'rescue' you if you hide under something :)

Love it! Thanks. I was wondering how to play hide and seek with her. NOT. . .that I have a place large enough for it. lol Still, even a simple game is better than no game! I've been using the Absolute Dogs concept training method - which is. . .training via games. Simple games for us, but incredible for the dogs. It's done SO much for my dog. She's gone from a monster to a pretty stable dog and her confidence has grown. We've also improved recall from about 2% to 98% accurate in just a few months - without actually focusing on it at all. It's great to see other trainers out there now starting to focus on training through games a little more. The dogs love it and it works SO well.
Heck yeah. I always tell people that dogs don't know the difference between obedience and tricks except for how we approach it. So, I train obedience like it's a trick and it's a freaking blast to do it.
It is. I don't feel like I'm 'training' my dog when I'm playing games. I'm just having fun with her and the obedience and behaviour 'just happens' to come along with it. (Unless of course, I'm deliberately shaping a behaviour, of course, but even that can be made fun if kept short.)
Our border collie knows the names of his toys and things , so we love to send him to go find the objects in the house by giving the command, “ Find it ......” . We also do this with household items such as doors, crate, bathroom etc.
One question! I am not a new to dogs and puppies, but yes at raising a dog, and I have a problem. Since she was 2 months olds she never went out, and whenever we went to the vet we took her in our arms, because she wasn't vaccinated. And everytime I was going out I was telling her to stay and she would just stay still, even if I leave the door open. But now we started walking out, and she forgot all the training and whenever I open the door she wants to run out and not care about anything she wont hear me or anything. How can I teach her to not go out if she doesnt hear ANYTHING not even to treats. HELP thank you
My puppy and I love playing chase.The thing is I actually never taught it to him.I’d toss him his ball to the kitchen, he would run after it.Then I join him.From there we have a race back to the living room to see who can take the comfy spot first.It was so fun!

Guys my dog loves to play fetch but when she releases the ball and I try to get it again to play she growls and barks almost not letting me take the ball to play it again ... any tips to correct this behavior?
My dog learnt it naturally and so did one my cats. I live alone with one pet a time, and I guess their instinct to follow you can be used to train them. e.g. slight close the door and let the dog see your run. Go hide, you will be found and then repeat.
This channel is saving me with my training for not only my first puppy but also my first service dog. I just wish I lived in your area for group training and stuff. Question, will you be doing a video on how to get your pup to stop humping legs and objects? That would save me from a lot of embarrassing moments.
Haha yes that can be not the best first impression. That's an obedience issue. There's not really a trick to it besides consistent, persistent, and patient feedback (both what not to do and what TO DO), along with rehearsing the right actions with some non-reactive friends. Rehearsal and repetition in neutral settings are usually the pieces that need more time.
You need some more fun dog games.

i play hide and seek, without leash in my morning walks with my 3months old puppy, and its the best thing ever!! he really knows we are playing, and happen naturally, without any training..

I do some thing a like in the forest! When he doesn't pay enough attention to me (for my like) I hide behind a tree or something and just wait. I do not call for him just waiting till he noticed. (of course I have him still in sight). He is really good in it! And double profit, we have fun, he is happy and he is paying more attention to me!

I also have a question: I have been watching a ton of your videos in preparation for getting a puppy in order to be fully prepared for training - or as well prepared as I can be. If I remember correctly, you talk about puppy training classes quite a bit, especially for the socialization. I want to teach my puppy specific hand signals that I think will work best for me. As you've said in a couple videos, if it's not easy for me, it's not gonna happen. So, if I take my puppy to one of these classes, is it going to be counter intuitive if they teach different hand signals? I would love to have the socialization, but I also want to teach the signals that I want use. Thanks!
That's a really good question. I can only answer from my perspective. If people come into my classes and use different words or different signals I tell them that what they're doing is different, not wrong. As long as they're consistent with what they do, I'm not gonna make an issue of it. If my way is more efficient, I'll make a case for it, but in the end I just want for them and their dog to learn, improve, and have a good time together. This isn't a JOB and I'm not their boss.
That being said, there are better ways to do things. So, a good instructor ought to be able to explain why one way is better than another AND still be supportive of your system if you choose to stick with it. Heck, your way may even be the better way. I dunno.
No matter what, though, your goals in an off-leash puppy class are socialization and bite inhibition. Teaching you how to get and keep your puppy's attention while doing functional socialization is the bonus and a good instructor should make this active and fun. If your instructor is going to make a stand over something like hand signals I think an honest conversation should be in order. Listen to your instructor, but your instructor needs to be hearing you too.

Can I use engagement games on a 1 year old or should I try something different? She has a high pray drive for toys etc and moderately high treat drive.
Hi Nick. Absolutely! In my experience, dogs with higher prey drive get into engagement games with gusto. They're actually much easier to work with for me.

What is the difference between "stay" and "wait"?
I think I messed up from the beginning with regards to this and I used "wait" in every situation.
For example, when going to the street through gate, when going outside of the house, when I give him food, when I give him toys, when I go outside or inside and want him to stay behind.
Is this a problem? Can I easily correct it?
If so, what are some of the situations when should I use "stay" and when "wait"? It is very unclear to me..
Hey there. I can only answer with the way I do it. Stay is always done from a control position, either Sit, Down, or Stand. So, you prompt the position, and then ask for the Stay, and they have to remain in that behavior until you release them. Wait on the other hand is really informal. I don't really care what they do as long as they don't follow me (unless/until I call them). I use this when I'm leaving the house and they want to go with me, or I'm going to get the mail or something and coming back, or carrying something up and down stairs, or getting out of the car. I personally use a formal Stay pretty rarely, usually when I need them to remain stock still in some situation and there's stuff going...movement or transitions or something. Sometimes if I'm using one in a group class I need to go talk to someone or grab something I'll put them in a full Stay. Or, of course, for this game, but I want that contrast between sitting still and running to find me. That contrast is stimulating to them.
My dogs have pretty good impulse control, though, and the Waits work well for us in most cases. For some dogs a more detailed action like a Stay will probably be more appropriate for the time being. Up to you and how/when you need it.
My thing as a trainer is, though, ask yourself "Does it work?" If it's working for you, then it's good. If it's not doing what you want, then that's when you step back and refine the system. Hope that helps!

The first dog i trained is my current service dog.
No one would help us so I kind of made it up as I went for a lot of things like how to unzip my book bag and retrieve meds.
We just have this understanding and it’s hard to explain haha
But when ppl told me I was doing something wrong I would say “well look at my videos, it’s obviously working for me”.
Long story short I now do how to training videos (as well as all types of videos) and get to help others learn how to train their dogs as well.
Granted I’m no where near the level you’re at, but even if I help just one person it’s all worth it and I’ve blown away my goal!
Someone Help! I don't know what dog breed to buy. I have researched all of these breeds and am ready to own one so which on should I get? Dalmation? Rough Collie? German Shepherd? Great Dane? Or Giant Schnuazer?
Maybe you could go to an animal shelter and the staff could help you find a dog to adopt. You would be saving a dog's life too!
Definitely go to your local animal shelter! See which dogs come to you, which personalities you like, etc. You'll find a good fit there, and like another commenter said, you'll be saving a dog's life. #adoptdontshop #findyoursoulmate
We have a traumatized dog, and he has to be on a leash at all times, so sometimes he doesn't have the patience to go all the way to the dog park (5 mins away, and has a fence so we can let him run around hahah) we improvise and have him jump over benches and fences, because that's the only activity we can provide when he's extremely afraid of loud sounds and similar stuff, so we can't let him run around on a meadow or something. If anybody has any tips for other games we can play outside while he's on a leash, I'd be happy to hear them, but for now this is all we got 😁😁
malaninda try desensitizing your dog. Start small, with low noises. I had a dog who was extremely reactive to traffic. So I downloaded traffic sounds and played them at a low level in my house all day while I was there- low enough that he didn't react. I slowly amped up the noises as the days went on. If he reacted, I lowered the volume. Within two weeks it was no longer a problem.
@@Candorsmayhem we are desensitizing him, and some sounds are not a problem anymore. But, some are still pretty tough (he was shot in the leg before he came into the shelter) and he's probably a very anxious dog, so some things are much harder with him
He just likes to be home, because it's a safe environment for him, where no rain, thunder or snow can touch him haha

Amazing I’m going to try this tonight! Quick question. Our pup is 13 weeks he’s a French bulldog and when he gets too excited he barks like mad. Any tips on reducing this? I get pups bark but I have a niece and nephew and don’t want to scare them when they’re playing with Freddie. I’d appreciate any help thank you!
My boy Marvel is an aussie/border collie mix, and had the same issue! The ball, the frisbee, the bone, the treat-all super exciting n he'd bark like crazy! We just started hiding whatever it was he wanted behind our back and a gentle "uh-oh" until he paused barking (prob just to take a breath) then be quick to give him what he wanted in that moment of quiet! Progressed to requiring longer more purposeful silences before reward, and now he knows more than one happy bark is gonna make the game stop!

My dog learnt how to play just from us having fun. We would run around and I hid behind the bedroom door and it took him a bit to find me. Then I got curious so I asked him to wait and then went and hid within the hanged up clothes in the wardrobe. He spend ages trying to find me and he seemed so happy while doing it, so I kept playing and making the spots harder each time. He is a very smart dog so all I said was sit and wait. I then called his name once I was hidden and he runs to find me. It's so fun
My puppy is good at this, whenever I leave he can't wait to find me, but then when I tell him to come when he can see me he's like nope I don't wanna lol.
