I would love video that gives an overview on dog food/nutrition.
Could you produce a video covering the correct way to use "no" in training, and if there are any circumstances where a firm reprimand is appropriate and how to deliver it?
Imo no is only effective if the dog understands what no will entail, for example if you have a heavy biter and when he bites while you're playing with him and you say no and leave he will understand that no means that whatever fun is going on will end
When most people use the word "no" it generally isn't clear to the dog what that means as humans use it for multiple situations, e.g. "no" can mean, stop pulling, drop that, get off, don't chew that etc. It's not clear. Where as in comparison "sit", "drop", "bed", "stay" all mean one thing and one thing only, therefore the dog can learn what those words mean and what we are asking them to do. Instead of using the word "no" or reprimanding in any way we should be asking ourselves what do we want our dogs to do instead? And then teach and highly reinforce the desired behaviour.
In terms of when to use “no” and how to deliver it . I’ll give an example ..
Wife: It’s my moms birthday we are going to her house tonight
Me: No
Wife : (delivers reprimand )
Me : (sitting in the car quietly)
Could you please cover collars; whether you prefer harnesses to neck collars, especially when dealing with a English Staffy, and dog bags?

I found your channel and have been watching this every evening. I have 2 black lab rescues. Last month we rescued a boxer mix. She has never been on a leash but tries to get out the door and is a runner. Got a leather leash and hangs on the inside of the door. I can clip it on her when someone comes the house. My son and have been teaching her to sit and stay. She's smart but bull headed. Thank you so much.

When we first got our miniature poodle we went with a nylon leash, but after he chewed through it to chase after us on a camping trip, we switched over to chain leashes to avoid repeat incidents. While it worked well over the years since, I'm still trying to become as informed as I can as far as what works best. Not just for smaller dogs, though, as I'm planning on getting a husky in the next few years.
I actually really like the Extendable leashes. They work great when used properly. Which unfortunately allot of people don’t do.
When I want, I can have it locked to be. 4,5 of 6ft lead.
At its absolute minimum it’s about the perfect length as a traffic loop.
When we’re alone, and I want to give him some breathing room to move around comfortably he’s got a 40ft radius around me. But I can stop his extension at a moments notice.
And when the dog is trained to walk beside me. I have the lock off, and it acts almost like one of thoes rubber band leashes that relieve the jolt of tugging when the lease briefly meets it limits, since the extendable one is always free flowing.
When your dogs trained, it’s a beautiful tool for walks.

Thanks Ian! The EZ dog vario 6 is a favorite of mine too. It helped with my previous dog who was a dedicated puller. She pulled through every head collar and harness. EZ Dog vario 6 plus their harness with the suitcase style handle worked well.

I have just found your videos, and am loving them. I would love if you could make a 'I screwed up raising my puppy and now need to fix it's bad habits' video. Mostly because I did. Not entirely my fault, but A lot was.
I was given 2 Border Collie pups (8 weeks old). Unfortunately, for the first month they were really sick and had to be confined to the bathroom with no chance of training, and very little opportunity to bond. Combining that with my lack of knowledge and their 'insanity', I lost hope and gave one to my brother. They are now both 9 months old, and are pretty good dogs, but still need a lot of work on our part. Your videos have already given me so much hope. Thankyou.

I personally love the leather leashes from SoftTouch on Amazon. They also have nice matching collars with two rings, one sturdy metal one for the leash and a small metal one for the dog tags. Both the collars and the handle of the leash are padded for extra comfort. The leash is braided at both the handle and clip. The leather is thick and stands up to those occasional puppy bites.
At the end of 2019 you should make a video on gear. What are the best harnesses, leashes, toys and etc.
Tbh I as an experienced walker can say that it reaaaaally depends on where you walk your dog. Because Dog Plus Bone is one of the bests, but when it comes to suburb or more grass and less traffic place I love long leashes, not to mention those situations when dogs want to swim but can't be off leash
My favorite kinds of leashes are self made rope leashes.
I just get a soft but sturdy about 6m long rope and put doubled knot at about 30 cm 2m 2.5m and at the end as well as a loop at the end. As an attachement I use either a sturdy. Carabiner or just a nice tight knit to the harness. I like how you can customize them to your liking and the looks are also quite nice
I adore your channel! I'm getting a puppy in the fall that will be trained to be my service dog. While I'm working with a trainer on everything, even picking out the right puppy for the job, I feel like it's important for me to know what I'm doing to some degree as well, since I'm going to be doing a lot of the practice at home.

I got a paracord leash. I got it yesterday at petsmart. I decided to try it in the store and WOW! my dog loves to pull but only when there are animals like birds and rabbits etc. this leash is so much easier on me and my dog. She doesn’t pull nearly as much and definitely not nearly as hard. It’s teaching her not to without me actually teaching her. I mean I do but makes it a lot easier. The leash absorbs the force of her pull before I even feel the pull. I freaking love it. It’s a 4ft leash and I think I’m going to get the 6ft. I do like how she is closer to me and I can pull her back in a lot easier. She’s a American bulldog/boxer. She’s only 1 years old and I think it’s the best leash ever lol
Love your videos and wanted to share my favourite leash. I’m a big fan of biothane collars and leashes. Biothane was invented by 3M engineers who also rode horses cross country and their leather tack would get slimy and rot out too quickly. The biothane gold is great for the collar as it is smooth and spins easily around my dogs neck. The biothane beta is great for leashes in that it grips well and the edges are more rounded. It handles a lot like leather except it’s completely waterproof. This stuff is perfect for my Toller who is always in and out of the water. You can drag this stuff through the mud, hose it off and in 5 minutes it’s dry. I got mine online and for a few extra dollars they upgraded all the hardware (clasp, rivets, center ring, and the stamped nameplate) to solid brass. We live by the ocean so salt water corrodes or degrades most materials. And the best part is this stuff doesn’t smell like low tide... unlike my dog. After a year and a half, everything still looks brand new.
Still great guidance four years later. I’ve gravitated to the perma-tack perfection lead and the jaeger lead.

Can you do the review about collar or harness and the hygiene products
My adoption group gave me a Petsafe leash. I later bought a ROK Strap through a previous recommendation from Ian. I loved the ROK Strap and the fact the traffic handle hides away when not in use. However, bolt snaps don't work well for me. I've had multiple bolt snaps come loose when my greyhound shakes while wearing either of his coverings where the leash connects to the D ring through a slot in the top of the covering (Voyagers K9 Apparel coat and rain coat, the shaking can pull the bolt snap through, and in the process, snag the thumb snap and pull it open). Because of this, I've grown a preference for the locking carabiner snaps. In fact, I've seen many greyhound people recommend adding a carabiner to the connection of leashes with bolt snaps due to their tendency to come loose.
I don't recommend the Ruffwear carabiner rope leashes (Knot-a-leash). There is no swivel so as the leash twists, it contorts and becomes a bit of a bear to use when loose (the goal is loose leash walking, right?). I switched to the Tuff Mutt carabiner rope leash as it has a swivel and it is now my primary leash. Tuff Mutt can be found on Amazon. I have, since, upgraded my Ruffwear leashes with replacement swivel locking carabiner snaps so I have those to fall back to, if needed. In terms of quality and strength, so far both the Tuff Mutt and the Ruffwear leashes hold up to my greyhound's sudden lunges for a squirrel.
Understand that rope leashes don't work well for how Ian recommends to use the leash, and this is not how I hold it. I mention this because it seems carabiner leashes all tend to be rope leashes. For greyhounds, it is strongly recommended to put your hand through the loop and then hold at the base, and this works well for rope leashes. This is because greyhounds will occasionally throw leash etiquette out the window to go for a squirrel or rabbit depending on their prey drive (keep in mind, they were raised from puppies to chase small furry things). These are dogs with powerful legs for racing and when they decide to bolt, it's a very sudden very strong pull. Benson has really good leash etiquette, for the most part, and Ian's method of holding the leash might be better _for those times_. But I would have lost him multiple times if I had depended on that hold rather than putting my hand through the loop. His note about ease of giving the dog some length where needed is no problem with how I hold the leash. I also have no problem using the leash for communication. We actually walk very well together.
A note about the Nifti Safelatch: If your collar has brass hardware (as mine does), that magnet does nothing for you. The extra insert for the bolt may have helped with my situation, but, as of now, I stick to my locking carabiner leashes. The carabiner hardware is relatively light and I have had zero issues with them (other than they are occasionally fiddly).

Such good videos pal, you are a terrific trainer and I just wish I live closer so I can go to your studio. I have two little dogs/beasts and I have had a really hard time finding a leash to walk them both, as they are both so active they tangle themselves sniffing around and its so messy, what options do you recomend for walking two dogs in one leash or how do you recommend we should walk with two dogs.

I am currently in the process of adopting a small three-legged dog and was interested to hear what your professional opinion on harnesses and leashes were for my disabled pup. He is missing his right front leg and most of the information I have found was for dogs missing hind legs. Love your videos! Very good video!! Although there are good high quality trigger snaps! I buy a braided leather leash and undo the braid and put in a stainless steel or brass trigger snap haven’t had a problem in years. Like anything it’s important to check your gear and make sure it’s working properly!
For sure. Build quality plays a lot into it. I'm probably biased because I've seen so many shitty trigger snaps I forget that there are good quality ones out there!
Ultimate Climbing Rope Dog Leash is what I use on my german shepherd from mydogscool I have had it for years now and use it all the time
I'd love to see a video about different collars and how to choose the right one for your dog. I use a martingale collar for my Alaskan Husky because she can slip out of every other kind I've tried. Plus when she was younger she broke 2 buckle collars, one all plastic and one with half metal half plastic buckle.
Use a harness, and practice mushing
We have a double webbed nylon leash that's older than I am and another leather one that's almost as old. The nylon one definitely is showing its years, but still in great shape. Meanwhile, the newer ones I've bought just aren't holding up the same

I think you would love my Biothane multi lead. Made with 1/2", 3/4", 7/8" or 1" Biothane for amazing strength and durability, with solid brass trigger hooks, rings and chicago screws. The strength us second to non and looks great too.

Have you guys ever tried biothane leashes? I have a biothane long lead for my dog for the beach. It's absolutely wonderful! Her collar is also biothane. It's a super cool and durable. Easy to clean too!
Can you do a video on choosing a harness for dogs of all ages and sizes? I have a Great Pyrenees puppy and I want to be prepared for when he gets bigger
My favorite for ease of use and aesthetics is the Mendota British style slip lead. I always keep one in my car in case we ever find a stray, or forget a leash. As far as leather goes I like the Hund Denmark brand because of the ecologically minded processing of their leather. They use vegetable tanned leather rather than harsh chemical processes.
Hell yes on the Mendota. Love them too. I keep thinking I should do a slip lead video someday.

Great video, and glad to see some new content from you guys. Nova, our golden retriever likes to go to the beaches and go do some hikes, which means our leashes get wet and dirty. I have been trying out a leash (Their Eurolead) by SloppyChopsCo, which is made out of biothane. It is a bit heavy, but it's waterproof and extremely easy to clean. Also looks and feels kind of like leather. Any opinions about biothane material?

You should pick up a leather leash from Bridgeport k9 Equipment. They are very affordable and built to last! Stitched and riveted with a solid brass bolt snap. They also have other configurations, but this is my personal favorite. I have one for each of my dogs and I love them. Their customer service is incredible, too!

Can you do a review on multifunction hands free leashes? Service dog handlers such as myself can really benefit from which ones are recommended.
I do have an issue with trying to use my vario 6 as a hands free. I’m only 5’4 but trying to use it as a hand free caaaan be done but not comfortably. The “messenger style” opening only fits a few inches underneath my armpit. It also requires purchasing the add on extension to have enough length to clip onto the dog. I love the leash but it’s so awkward as I try to use the hands free. The fabric is made of is smooth to hold onto but dog hair sticks all over it.

My favorite all-purpose harness right now is the Ruffwear Front Range. All four of my dogs have one.

I would love a video about how to control barking....I have a beagle that howls when he gets really excited (when I come home, take him on walks, sees other dogs, etc...) and it’s deafening. Not to mention it gets other dogs riled up, scares people, can wake people up and is generally unpleasant. I know it’s his way of expressing himself but it makes things like taking a walk unpleasant for me (and others). I’m not sure how to teach him to control himself....and I also don’t know how to differentiate that barking at say, a loud noise or intruder is correct but incorrect when taking a walk or seeing/hearing another dog. I hope this makes sense. Love your videos!!Thanks for any advice you have!!

My favorite go to leash the the Doggie Design Nylon with the Reflective Strip. It's very bright. My only problem with it is even the small is slightly too heavy for my 12lbs toy. If I don't pick up the slack or follow closely it drags behind and makes her walk crooked.
I also use a Lupine leash that's thinner and matches one of her harnesses. I prefer 4ft, for where we walk it's enough length. When I get into 6ft it can quickly become too heavy for her and can, again, cause her to walk sideways. I usually just end up holding the slack anyway. This is why I dislike traffic handles, they add weight. For my money I'd rather just have a shorter leash, wrap it around my hand to create a traffic handle, or pick her up.
I've yet to find a 6 in one ready made that works for us. My main reason to have it would be to use hands free messenger style but with Chloe being so small and me being 5'7" they're not long enough. So I got one on Etsy that works okay and might one day have one custom made. The former has to be doubled over but it's paracord and pretty light for as long as it is. I also use a K9 Cord and just loop the leash through the handle. It's reflective and made from climbing rope. The handle isn't the most comfortable but I rarely use it that way anyway. What on your thoughts of climbing rope leashes? Paracord?
I have the opposite problem with bungees. I've yet to find one that my dog can actually pull and get any give from.

I dont care for bolt snaps cause i had one come open and separate from a harness my when my 16 year old daughter walking our puppy the puppy ran into traffic she didnt make it. I no longer trust them, how to tell a well made one from a not well made one, I normally try to use the other kinds and replace them more so they dont have time to ware down, going to give the nifti safelatch a try. ty for the video

Hi Ian! I've recently adopted a 4-5 year old boxer from my grandparents. He previously lived on a farm with acres to roam and no prior training, and we live in a suburban home with a large backyard. Any tips for his transition? He seems pretty stressed out and absolutely refuses to go out of the gate for a walk, and shakes when we put his leash and/or harness on. Other than that, he is doing ok. Any ideas or tips for socializing an older dog? It's my first dog and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Thanks!
You should check out biothane leashes if you haven't yet. I like to use a long leash that grinds on the ground so I looked for something that will survive mud and dirt and is easy to clean. After a few weeks in rainy weather it looks like new.
I have a complicated relationship with biothane, LOL. I think it's a good material, and it for sure resists wear pretty well. I just...I dunno...haven't found one that really made me go nuts yet. I don't hate it, though. Given the choice I'd pretty much always pick up one of my leather leashes.
Biothane tends to be good as a long dragging lead for training recall in my experience. Doesn’t attract stuff from the ground plus water resistant. Have to be VERY careful though that it doesn’t go around or near your ankles/legs (because ouch).

What are your thoughts on raw food?
Are "fake" bones, nylon bones, bad? I've read they can produce sharp splinters?
Do you know what scents dogs like/dislike? For use in soy wax melts?

Hi Michelle. I looked at that West Paw leash and, IMHO, the snap on the loop makes me nervous. For a giant schnauzer I would exercise caution with that. Similarly, I see they're using claw snaps and, in my experience, those just do not hold up. The material of the leash, though, sounds great. I just wish they'd have made different decisions on the ends!
It all has to do with how you actually train your pup/dog. Leather or nylon is fine. I use both. With training I use a 30' training lead that is nylon . Mind you there are shorter ones.
What is your opinion on retractable nylon leashes for small dogs?
When do you use a collar as apposed to a harness? Especially in training. Im getting a pugapoo puppy and will begin training asap.
Usually we do it like this: walking training is done on the collar and they're taught not to pull on their collar. That process begins in a neutral environment and we focus on building the motor skills and motivation. That process also takes time, so while we're moving our dogs around the rest of the world (vet, groomer, training school, family cookouts, etc) we put them on their harness. It's ok if they pull into their harness because it won't interfere with the collar work. In fact, there will be times in the training we WANT them to pull into a harness to build drive for certain activities (depending, of course, on the training goals for that dog). Eventually the collar work moves outdoors and replaces the harness for regular walking. So, think of it this way: the harness is like a track suit, the collar is like formal wear. Your dog will learn to behave according to the hardware they're using at the time. Hope that helps!

What's the best leash for a 3 year old Black Lab that I am going to Train he was trained as a puppy but has truly lost most of it He has Severe Pulling Problem with Walking so I barley walk him because you basically can't I'm thinking of taking your course on it so please give me best recommendation for a untrained Black Lab 3 years old he is 60 pounds thank you!
to get a leather leash with the snap from the nifti safelatch, just cut the nylon webbing off, take a braided leather leash, carefully undo the braiding and switch out the snaps, then redo the braiding...voilà.
So I love your videos and the information is great, however I’m a nerd, and noticed your car load out. Where did you find that system? I love it and I know it’s not leash related, but I’m all about being as mobile as possible.

Hi Marc. I think in this video it had pictures of my Equinoxe. Since then, I've gotten a 4Runner and a whole new system. But that old setup was mainly seatback MOLLE panels by Blue Ridge Overland, and pouches by Maxpedition, Hazard 4, and 5.11 Tactical (mostly Maxpedition). The backpack featured was by 5.11 Tactical.
In the new 4Runner, I've got all the old pouches, but I'm using panels in the back windows made by Rago Fabrication with all the pouches attached to them. I couldn't do the seatback thing since I always have the middle row folded down for the doggos.
Either set up is awesome. I loved having stuff with me all the time. Hope that helps!
Simpawtico Dog Training You Rock! Im always looking for “modular” rigs and ways to organize everything. It helps a lot! I do have a suggestion for a video which is not dog training but dog related. I’m sure everyone probably runs into this, which is dog first aid. Luckily I have not had any issues, but I am new to being a dog owner, and my dog loves to get into bushes and I know he will find a prickly bush one of these days. I’ve put in some ointment and some blood clotting powder to my doggy go bag. Anyways, thank you for all the great videos and keep it up!

What do you think about the retractable leashes with the thin string that you can lock and unlock?
We aren't necessarily "Anti-retractable," but they're for sure a sensitive tool that you have to respect and use correctly. That said, I don't EVER recommend the string kind; the tape models are safer and more reliable, and they're available for all sizes. Likewise, I recommend thumb brakes over trigger brakes. Finally, spend the money on a name brand; budget models are garbage.
Can you review the Wacky Walk'r sometime?
I like your thoughtfulness on the leash clips and how you've walked back your stance on traffic handles. You should consider doing a new harness video or at least one on front clip harnesses. I'm sure you've noticed more harnesses putting front clips on their harnesses and how ineffective some can be. What I mean is: the front clip on a harness like the ruffwear, because it has no connection to straps that go perpendicular to the dog's legs, it does absolutely nothing. I keep seeing more harnesses that have this similar leash connection. Not mention people leaving their Easy Walk harnesses loose, creating the same effect. Would love to see your take on it, I think it's something worth addressing that I haven't seen many trainers talk about.
To add to that, there seems to be generic model, that I've seen many different brand names on, that has this same sort of front clip connection. I know one of them is a new Petco brand one, but many of the ones I've seen are bright orange or pink.

What do you think of leashes for the car? What is the best way to use one of these seat belt leashes?
My comment here is about the related "The Dog Owner's Basic Gear Buyer's Guide" Version 2.0 PDF from Sympawtico. In it the Flexi Vario (tape) retractable leash is recommended. This model is no longer available from Flexi. The nearest current equivalent seems to be the Comfort model. However these Flexi retractables have gotten a lot of negative comments on Amazon. Seems to be some consensus that the older versions were good, but the recent models are using an inferior tape that breaks easily. Do you agree with this assesment? What would be your current ecommendation among available models? (The "Tug" branded product seems to have good reviews on Amazon). I should say that this would be for recall training and special circumstances, not as a regular walking leash.
Hey there! Thanks so much for this. I had not heard either that the Vario was no longer available (that's a drag) or that the quality has declined. Honestly, I'm STILL using my older Varios because they're still in great shape. I haven't tried any NEW Flexi stuff in probably five years. I really HOPE it's not like you said, but it may well be. I will have to experiment with some and try out some new ones to see what's what with those. I'll give the Tug brand a try. In any event, though, I'd say you're right: they're mostly for special training setups rather than our walks around the neighborhood or in public. We do use them for hiking and for potty runs, but that's about it. Thanks again for the feedback!

What about tactical leashes and collars
I recently adopted a 4 year old portugese shelter dog, she does not play with toys or has any intrest in them. How can I motivate her and get her to play with it?
Can I add to the nylon leashes that you can burn your hands if you grip it wrong and your dog runs off? I had this very issue just the other day.
She started running because a fun new dog was too close and i last minute grabbed the leash.
It was during a training session and i already had proper hold on the leash but i decided to grip on closer to her as the leash was pretty long at the time.
My mistake obviously but i just wanted to say this stuff happens and nylon will be quick to burn you which I'm not sure leather will really do
Agreed. I've moved so far away from nylon leashes in the last few years. It's pretty much leather or biothane for everything I use, now.

Rox strap is my fave! I love it so much as someone who has very sensitive hands. I cannot use nylon leashes anymore!
My dog chews on his leash and has chewed through some leashes, what material do you recommend for longevity while I try to train him out of this?
That's a tough one for me to answer because you can get a dog to stop biting a leash in just a couple of sessions...but you've got to know how and you've got to be persistent. So...there is no meantime. Anything except a chain will get chewed in half and I refuse to use a chain. So, that means we deal with it. So many people have asked about this that I'm probably going to have to break down and do a video on it. To answer you directly: either leather or chain. I'd recommend leather, because chain leashes are practically unusable for training, but a chain will probably last you longer until you get past it.
Could you do a video if your dog encounters a big aggressive dog ? And what to do ? I will have a small toy poodle and don’t want him getting attack by some crazy dog , otherwise I’ll just pick up my dog and move on
I got a bike trailer thing for my dog today, but she keeps crying and destroying the mesh when she is in it. It is no problem to get her in, just when I start biking.
I have the feeling that it has something to do with being behind me. She doesn't like walking behind me when she is walking without leash, she always wants to be next to me or in front of me.
Any idea how I can get her more comfortable whilst riding?
Maybe try getting a kong stuffed with food and treats to keep her occupied
for the place where it's raining a lot and freezing half of the year, leather is not an option. also the weight of the snap matters, when you have a puppy. magnetic snap makes life easy, so does rubber (lead doesn't slip when it's rainy). after trying 5 different leads i finally chose DAYTONA GUMMY MATIC GA, i googled, it's available in US
I'm a new dog owner, and I was wondering how everyone feels about paracord leashes? I don't see much videos about them. Does anyone know much about how they compare to other leashes?
I personally don't like them. Your mileage may vary, though.
Any recommendations on best collars? We are adopting a boxer/mastiff mix!
The Ruffwear TopRope, or the Mighty Paw metal clasp are great. If your dog slips out of collars than the PetSafe Martingale is great too. Not as fancy looking, but super functional.
