45 years ago I had a 29 gallon tank with a bunch of guppies and a bunch of plants and snails that was a couple years old and I sometimes wouldn't feed for a long time. I never did a water change on that tank. It just balanced out like one of those sealed jar biospheres.
great advice! just remember that this approach only works on a heavily planted, dirted tank with an inch of dirt and 2 inches of sand. any other set-ups, require cycling of your filter, and water changes to keep nitrates down.
I have nearly 70 years of fish keeping. Entire rooms filled with fish to breed and sell. Over all those years I have never intentionally cycled any freshwater tank. The main issue with fish is ph. As long as it's in the proper range for the variety and you have good filtration on the tank the fish should be fine. If there appears to be an ammonia issue a good partial water change will often take care of it. If you have other tanks or a friend does and you want to make it easy then put a new sponge filter in the old tank and run it for a week or so and then transfer it to the new tank. Even some gravel from an old tank is enough to seed the new tank. That said most fish if properly cared for will cycle a new tank without issues or work on your part.
I need serious help . I was given a beta on my graduation.. I did not nothing about fish and was suddenly with this beautiful fish in front of me no tank no nothing .. Now that I have done my research.. I realized I never cycled my tank !!!! But my lil guy is thriving .. is he doomed ? What can I do please help?
@@titogee36 If you've had this fish for two months and he seems to be fine, then your tank may have actually cycled itself without your knowing. I would definitely get live plants, planting substrate, and an aquarium light for your plants. Plants will take up the brunt of aquarium impurities, and use them to grow! Do yourself a favor, and just do bi-weekly water changes if your tank is smaller than 5 gallons. If it's 5 gallons or more, then one water change a week will most likely be okay. Don't change out all of the water, do maybe 30%. Betta fish need a minimum of 5 gallons, but if you don't have the means to get one, then just work with what you have. One last thing, get an aquarium heater. Betta fish are tropical creatures and need warmer water. If you live in a hot region, and your AC is set to 68 or 70, you are going to cause significant stress to your betta.

a few months ago i experimented with bottled ammonia and the tank got "cycled" in 7 days. I was really happy with the test readings and the ammonia was processed really quick and the water looked great. I put in some guppies. 4 out of 5 died within a week with no ammonia spikes. I am happy i tried it and it gave me a great insight into what is going on with ammonia, bio load but from now on I'm going back to the natural way: dirt, sand, dead leaves plants plants plants and fish from the get go. There is no other way.
Hey father fish, after watching a handful of your videos I'm convinced, I'm about to set up my first father fish method tank! Been keeping shrimp and betta for a few years with heavily planted active substrate tanks after being scared of a totally natural tank.. Thanks for the courage to give this new tank adventure a go :) ❤
Thank you for this insight Father Fish! I always think about acclimating the fish to the tank, but it’s good to realize that the tank also needs to be acclimated to the fish!
I really enjoyed today's sermon, Father Fish. Preach it brotha!!! I read "A Fish Out of Water" as a kid, where the fish doctor said to only feed 'just a spot', and when the kid overfed his fish it grew to monstrous proportions, and the problem got way out of hand, and I am afraid our protagonist was in quite over his head, before he learned not to overfeed his pet fish. It is actually very challenging not to overfeed. I like to look at the food floating at the surface from below to give me an idea of how much I put in there, but even still it is hard not to overfeed.
Thank you, Father Fish, for addressing feeding these wonderful fish properly.🧡So very helpful! God bless you. I work with little kids. You are SO correct about encouraging the fish keeper to be in charge...and not the fish. :)

I like the cut of your jib. As a total novice trying to make sense of all the contradictory information out there, this has been incredibly helpful. Thanks so much!
I set my tank up about 2 years ago after watching a video of yours, although I skipped a few of the substrate's ingredients, but I added leaves from the start and fish from day 1. And I barely feed them ever, like once in 4 months, I have 4 mountain minnows in a 10g. Thank you for ff
Ive done the same thing for years. Especially if you are using water column feeding plants, especially from another tank, you will be fine. Java Fern will pull ammonia immediately from the water. I typically add plants into the tank and then the next day add a few fish. In my newest 55g I added 8 cories and a couple of guppies. I tested the water daily, looking for an ammonia spike. Never got one. After a week I added 6-7 more guppies, and a couple of small tetras. Tested every day for the next week, and never got an ammonia or any other of my parameters to show even a single level increase. I do feed once a day for my display tanks, and the only tanks I feed more than that are my breeder/grow out tanks.
Thanks for sharing this information. We recently went to a pet shop "just to look around". After seeing the conditions of some of the fish I agreed with my son to "save just one". we got our tank, followed your setup advice and put him in right away. I understand its risky but the outcome for him at the store would have been much worse. Day 5 and so far so good.

Just found your channel, and I’m so glad I did. I bought and set up my fish tank today. Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
That is awesome Elizabeth! Those who are in touch with nature understand what it means to have a natural aquarium. It is not simply appearance. It is the biology.
I been told to put food inthe tank for a month, then test if every parameter are good. If they are, add fish. If they are not, keep adding food. This make a very boring tank for quite a long time. I just bought a 55 gallon to replace my very old 20 gallons and I have like may be 15 to 20 platies. Since I have so few of them, I may start to move them. Would be more fun to watch with very little fish then none at all. Anyway, it's will be there new tank, later I want to add angelfishs and plecos that stay under 5" (clown pleco, they are so great!). Thank you for your advice.
Guy is awesome to watch everything he says makes sense is a proper professional at keeping an aquarium now listen more to this guy than any other when it comes to keeping aquarium fish I actually enjoy keeping them more and it's a lot less stressful
Thanks. I was starting to do a fishless cycle for my two sons new 32 gallon tanks. I Added ammonia, then read how long and frustrating it can be to do. Long story short, I took out all the water and am going to follow this advice
Yeah I was changing my brand new tank with a betta every 2 days cause I thought that what I was suppose to do. I'm glad I watched your video. Will see if your way works better.
Lol, makes sense why I keep having ammonia now. My tanks are over stocked, so I'm always adding just a smidge more food than I probably should be, trying to make sure everyone gets some. I'm especially bad with my tiger barbs and German blue ram, but it's so much fun watching them... Like a school of little piranhas when they eat lol, and the green tigers make it better with them actually looking a lot like mini piranhas.

I’ve always said that fish are predatory creatures. In nature they hunt their food. So I don’t feed my fish everyday. I might feed them 1 time every couple of days. Most of the time I mix up the amount of times I feed them over a weeks time. Like Father Fish said they are then more likely to search the tank for food. I learned this from a more experienced fish keeper when I began the hobby.
Hi Father Fish, Lovely to see the new style videos. Always nice to hear your wisdom and tank approach❤ Would love to transfer my small tank one day over to a true food web style tank. Without filter etc, just to see what happens. For now the tank is over a month old with a new, fresh soil layer and only last week I did my first water change😮 The trumpet snails from the existing sand were handling the bioload for me. I put in a tiny amount of food in about twice or so. I hope the tank is now ready for my shrimp to reintroduce. A few weeks after that I will look into small nano fish, since I wanted to look at something else then guppies for over a year straight🤫
I keep watching your tank cycle video, It really does make sense so why am i worried about putting my fish in, all ive been led to believe youve just blown out of the water 😊
Thank you for your knowledge and words of wisdom. I have learned so much in the past few years after finding your channel. I now enjoy my tanks instead of working full time on them with out enjoying them. Wisdom I am truly grateful for 🤗
Omg FINALLLLLLLY! Someone that understands biology!! I’m a science major and I can’t believe so many UA-camrs are saying you need to wait months!! I have three tanks and one of the tanks I didn’t even cycle for a day since it was a betta I was reaching from Petsmart. He had fin rot AND velvet disease! He not only survived, but he is thriving!
I’ve always added fish right off. I use media from one of my other tanks and maybe a piece of decor and some bottled bacteria and stock light and I’ve never had issues
I remember when I was still a kid, I used to catch small fishes like clownfish and others on the shore and keep them in a fish tank. Since I was little I didn't even know about those nitrate/amonia stuff plus It has no filter/aerator, but my fish survives for many months just by changing water from time to time. The only reason they died was because my little brother feed them a whole lot of bread when I was in school. Since then, I did not try to keep any fish again until now.
Hey I hope this isn’t a dumb question. I watched 3x times and didn’t hear him mention dechlorinating the water? I’d assume day1. My marine life filter says add it 24 hours prior.
I want to start a fish in cycle.. I have my 5 gallon tank set up with natural looking gravel, and real plants, with a mini sponge filter as well. I also have some Catappa leaves in the tank because of their health benefits to fish. Anyways, I have a pond full of Mosquito fish, and I'm gonna put 2 little babies in my tank - they are really tough fish. ..And I will only feed them the tiniest bit of food a day. I'm gonna let my tank cycle for at least 5 weeks with the fish and let it get good and established with beneficial bacteria before I ever think about getting a betta for it.. When I do, the 2 Mosquito fish can go back into the pond with the millions of others.. LoL.

Best fishkeeping guide. Thank you father.
Very welcome
Happy Father Fish👍🏽
1st video, almost 2 year new fish keeper. gonna learn more from this wise old man
Good video ff i feed small amounts every 2nd day with a frozen food treat one a week
Guy is awesome to watch everything he says makes sense is a proper professional at keeping an aquarium now listen more to this guy than any other when it comes to keeping aquarium fish I actually enjoy keeping them more and it's a lot less stressful
I just added fish after 2 days for the same reasons 6 cherry barbs in a 29 gallon. So far so good.
This is the best guidance to setup a tank. Took me a year to realise. Thank you
I love how your insight is wiser then most 😊
Lol, makes sense why I keep having ammonia now.
Eating is not the only activity for a normal fish.
Thanks for making this clear
Happy to help randomtea.
Great video, as expected. I'm working on tearing down my tanks and redoing them with deep substrates.
Go for it Glen. We are here to help. discord.gg/sgeQSduS

I pray for you now cause I want grateness for you. You have helped me so much in my walk with freshwater I love your back in the day thinking to a tank. Stunning tanks too. Love ya. -S-
Great video Father Fish, very educational. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber!
Your fish are going to try to train you to feed them. Don't let them!
Haha so true!! Especially for cichlids
we are so happy for your fishy teaching father fish
I’ve always said that fish are predatory creatures. In nature they hunt their food. So I don’t feed my fish everyday. I might feed them 1 time every couple of days. Most of the time I mix up the amount of times I feed them over a weeks time. Like Father Fish said they are then more likely to search the tank for food. I learned this from a more experienced fish keeper when I began the hobby.
Absolutely true Ebike!
This was a great vid thank you father fish very knowledgeable
Glad you enjoyed it Kodestar.
You are amazing, Santa.
Yeah i did this with my very 1st tank I had all those years ago and placed 4 glowlight tetras as my 1st fish and they were fine live along while
Nice video thanks ! I had my tank set up after moving house and wasn't sure when to add fish, will get a couple in to cycle !
Love your channel father fish I’m just new to aquariums and I’m learning loads from you thank you
Thank you Drone. Happy to help.
Hi Father Fish,
Lovely to see the new style videos.
Always nice to hear your wisdom and tank approach❤
Would love to transfer my small tank one day over to a true food web style tank.
Without filter etc, just to see what happens.
For now the tank is over a month old with a new, fresh soil layer and only last week I did my first water change😮
The trumpet snails from the existing sand were handling the bioload for me.
I put in a tiny amount of food in about twice or so.
I hope the tank is now ready for my shrimp to reintroduce.
A few weeks after that I will look into small nano fish, since I wanted to look at something else then guppies for over a year straight🤫
Sounds lovely Titia. Your aquariums are an expression of your beauty.
Greetings from Jamaica my dear friend
Thanks for visiting Jamaica.
Thanks to you my fish are healthy and happy, also I’m happy to succeed without use any chemicals ❤ bc I was struggling with mechanical cycle
What do you mean with the mechanical cycle?
I keep watching your tank cycle video,
It really does make sense so why am i worried about putting my fish in, all ive been led to believe youve just blown out of the water 😊
Thanks!
Thank you Prashanth
Thank you for your knowledge and words of wisdom. I have learned so much in the past few years after finding your channel. I now enjoy my tanks instead of working full time on them with out enjoying them. Wisdom I am truly grateful for 🤗
You are so welcome Howard. IT has been a delight getting to know you.
Wonderful video father fish 😊it’s a really important topic. Thank you for explaining it in details the process of adding fish.
So nice of you Drine. The Research Group on DISCORD put this together in less than 24 hrs. A GREAT team! Join us: discord.gg/YJ63RaVH
Thank you FF😊I am already on the discord. I have to start talking more there 🫣🫣
Omg FINALLLLLLLY!
Thanks for all your knowledge. And the laughs also!
Hey father fish I put 11 plants in my new 55 gallon tank a few days ago. If I buy tetras how many can I start out with.
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊❤
God bless!
I’ve always added fish right off. I use media from one of my other tanks and maybe a piece of decor and some bottled bacteria and stock light and I’ve never had issues
Excellent Mike. Some material from a local stream or pond will do vastly more than the bottled stuff.
@@FatherFish I imagine so, but the risk isn’t worth it to me and my way has always worked well
I remember when I was still a kid,
I used to catch small fishes like clownfish and others on the shore and keep them in a fish tank.
Love all your content. I have had my tanks for many years. And your information helps me with my hobby!❤
LoL.
Wish more fish stores and UA-cam channels thought like you
Thank you! It’s refreshing to have a blunt sharing of your experience and perspective.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Father Fish. 🐠
My pleasure Jason
