I had no idea Dan Peek had passed, I still go to America concerts with Dewey and Gerry performing. Dan wrote one of the best songs I have ever heard, it has always been my favorite song by America, in fact it was my wedding song.........Todays the day.....thank you Dan.

The music was easy to play, and easy on the mind, ......the fellas were behind the mirror (so to speak). Years later, after I heard of Dan's spiritual choices, I was extra thrilled. Now I was getting to know the members behind the music I loved. I'll miss the music, but that's life.........Godspeed Dan! Enjoy Heaven!

For me, what is ironic in a way is that I kept being drawn back to listen to America while searching for music back in the day, then I saw Dan Peek's testimony and it was just what I needed to hear. Dan is with the Father now, and when we are all together again with those we know and love, we will never have to worry about losing them ever again, amein.

And folks, this is exactly the way it works! I went through the same exact thing (without, of course, the fame and the big money - rather I substituted women and Vicodin) for the money!
About six months after my "Damascus Road type conversion", I left my 30-year career to attend seminary and study the Word of God full time. That was 26 years ago! Believe me when I say that there is nothing in the Universe that can compare to the experience of being 'born-again' of the Lord Jesus Christ!
    Blessings,
    D.O'D.

Sad to hear that he had passed away in 2011 - it's a shame that the media did not cover his great talent and his life as a Christian more. The original America with the 3 of them was my favorite band growing up in the 70's - I was just blown away by their harmonies and their ability to play 3 guitars together. Unfortunately I was never able to see them in concert together. While I understand that Dan had to leave that lifestyle - and am very glad that he found his faith and lived a Christian life after America -it is still sad that the 3 of them never got together to play a few concerts for old times sake. Rest in peace, Dan - and many thanks for all of the music (which I still listen to now more than 40 years later).

I know personally that ice water can only make arthritis way WORSE.....extreme heat too can be counteractive.

I was addicted to rock and roll music but not as a musician. I would just get high off the beat and melody sans drugs and go into never never land. My favorite group was Pink Floyd cuz of their space rock sound. I would steal their records first. But as Dan Peek so aptly said, GOD has got a way of getting our attention. For me it was thru a rock and roll preacher who came to Anchorage, Alaska in May of 1973. He had stated in an interview that the Devil could be involved in some rock music.' what right did that clown have to attack my world ?' i loved my rock music more than God. So I decided to go to this evangelist's gospel crusade and scream and heckle him. To make a long story short God turned the tables on me and the man started preaching like Billy Graham on TV and I ended up walking the aisle and prayed with that preacher to receive Jesus Christ as my personal savior an accept his offer of forgiveness for my sins through his precious shed blood on the cross. I became what the Bible says " born-again ". "If any man be in Christ he is a new person and old things pass away.". I had been on the outside looking in before and now I was on the inside looking out. Christ gave me the power of His holy Spirit to shoot my favorite hard rock music lps w/ a 410. Shot gun. He also gave me moral purity w/ my girlfriend Donna.( I never again had sex with her) God also moved on me to give up my new bartending job on a tourist train from Anchorage to Fairbanks. ' America was one of the groups I shot there's more to life then sex drugs and rock and roll. Dan peek expounded well on that.Sorry if i got too wordy but I wanted to add my comment cuz I have something to say.

I had a moment of clarity today involving cleaning an area rug lke Dan. Difference is mine is a yard sale knock off. I like it. It's goes with my humble but cool abode. I love it. Turns out I too have a ton of "things." You see, when I moved here after starting over I gave this home to Father God. I saw in it a PERFECT place of refuge. I don't have fine china but I do have tons of matching plates and dishes. No egyptian cotton sheets but tons of matching sets. No sealy posture pedic mattresses but tons of fold outs, inflatables, cots, futons.... Children's books, lesson plans and art materials for an army, board games, records, old Vhs, safety kits, extra shampoo, towels, clothing, books, cassettes, CDs, toys, power tools, materials, ROOM. All picked up either as I went along, by the side of the road, passed down, just found..... pretty much free. As a resigned Art Teacher, I never gave up on my ability and hoped I would create a bustling think tank, crash pad, chill, regroup, restore, invent, 24/7 available home base for those needing solace, help... It's a long story. Everything here has a plan assigned to it. Or did. 2014 to 2021. Still not happening. But here I linger. Have two grown children ready to fly the coop but essentially solo. Dan busted out. Took off. He had someone. Life is much different for those single. But I need to change. Be all in. I know. I know. That might be why my offering up to the Lord has hovered for so long while I continued to cultivate. It's like preparing for something seriously but not knowing why. Supernatural vibes are here. I can't explain it. I will let go of all I have if only I heard a clear indication from the Lord to do so. I love the sound of chidren laughing and playing. And I LOVE to off my shoulder for someone to cry on and sit up all night with working through dark moments. Anyway, thanks for the honesty. Inspiral carpet paradigm.

Dan's description of how he and his bandmates first found their vocal blend is eerily similar to the story of Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Another loss to the music industry!! Every week, it seems, we lose a 'baby boomer' who made wonderful music. RIP, Dan. the music will live on....

He was not the "Lead Singer" of America. They all three sang lead on different songs, and wrote songs. They were three singer-songwriters who shared the "lead" vocals equally. Your headline is misleading. "Horse with No Name" was written and sung by Dewey Bunnell of America, "I Need You" was written and sung by Gerry Beckly of America. And those two songs were the most well known from their first album.

I'll add this one: his experience with the re-discovery of spirituality reminds me a lot of Cat Stevens'... also the English songwriter was in Malibu when he went for a swim in the ocean and nearly drowned, thus desperately calling for help and found... God. He often says he had become some sort of a jet-set money making machine, living as a tax exile in Brazil and going to parties here and there, although his search for spirituality had never disappeared as you can easily tell from his albums. Cat Stevens also says he had developed a very bad relationship with his audience who used to gather around his flat in London, and that's another reason why he fled to Brazil... but the 'Malibu connection' strikes me quite a lot now that I hear Dan speak of this...

Yeah....Cat was no Christian however....he served another god. He was Islamic in his mid-later years and even expressed support for death threats to someone who would speak out against Islam. He became a radical Islamic by intent and purpose. I did like his early music though.

@@ambrosearts It was about how they were hanging out with him and he was taking lots of photos with them.. and at the end he opened up the camera to show there'd been no film in it. Gerry later did the same thing to Dan at Dans wedding after assuring him he didn't need a photographer because he was going to take care of it.
