So nostalgic for me . Unbelievable how advanced your Tornado is . Looks like a new Maarstrom build. Mine was a Panthercraft with IYE rigging (1976 ), sail #458, works #362. In 1977, I single handed it in the Miami to Key Largo race. Came in 9 boats behind Paperdoll. I started that race dead last behind 100’s of different classes due to partying the night before . Cheers, mate !
Great video, looks like an armchair ride compared to the 16. Takes me back 30 something years ago when stepped in as crew on a Tornado for a friends dad. One and only time on the big T.
How come you don't have a Nacra in your fleet? That was a great video too by the way, what a great thing to wake up to on this lazy Sunday morning down here in Tasmania, almost time for our sailing season to start!
We have always been affiliated with Hobie but last year we were in touch with Goodall who said they'd like one of their boats at our place. Unfortunately it's unlikely that we'd get such a deal out of Nacra and we definitely couldn't afford to buy one!
Hey Joe, I can see you're easing the main sheet while the spinnaker is up. You've recommended to pull the main sheet in as tight as possible on my Dart 18 to support the mast. Around the 9:00 mark.
By increasing the downhaul to the maximum, the top of the sail really falls away to leeward, opens the leech and makes the whole sail very flat with the fullest part low and forward - this all equates to higher upwind speed.
I have sailed a Nacra 20. It is a rocket ship. So easy to sail. I own a very old Nacra 5.2. Much more complicated to sail. But when you adjust the sail trim correctly it is fast. The 20 is much faster and almost sails its self. I wish I could afford one.
AAHhh the T......Was there ever any doubt?..Daggerboard retracted, mast rotated slightly more and helm & crew to balance the boat a bit better...not riding it like a Hobie, sterns down,... but letting the bows carry a bit more pressure ...this will ease the effort to lift the windward hull sooner...FASTER!! Sweet!!! Enjoy those Halcyon days Joe!!...do it again!!!do it again!!
@@JoyriderTV Well you have to look at the distances you are sailing as well, because its still sailing not motoring, so speed is a relative thing in terms of distance covered...on longer legs you would see quite a huge difference...also if you had the chance to practice more with a regular crew who's also is in tune with the specific T and its idiosyncrasies you see quite a difference again. As you know tuning the T on the fly takes rather small incremental adjustments to really whip her into a frenzy....really fun to watch the video thanks again...you do a fantastic job for WildWind!
If the hull is in the air and we want to bring it down a little, pulling the downhaul is the most efficient way to do that and turns that energy into more speed.
I think the extra beam of the Tornado makes it an unfair contest! Even with identical sail area the bigger beam makes it easier to control the boat in strong winds like in Vassiliki?
Wind Speed?... Boat Speed? What about Switching the boats to after 3 laps to make sure its not the Helm and crew that make the big difference ( right now my taipan/godall Heart hurts a little...😢) hope to chase my boatsneighbor on his Tornado this Afternoon... Great Video great Boats great Job... Thanx

Yes, it's a 2000 Maarstrom, very similar to even the newest boats.
That race must have been amazing.
Even this year there were Tornado's competing thr Roudn of Texel, togheter with the Hoby 16 the most Iconic, timeless boats !!
Awesome! Thoroughly enjoyed that! Laughed a few times too as the Tornado would catch up and blow by. Had to feel really good during that run!
Yes for sure, I was expecting the Tornado to be quicker. Such a pleasure to sail.
Ron: Super Cool video with the Tornado and the C2. I also compete with a Tornado and recognize the enthusiasm to pass modern boats!
Oh yeah, the classic has still got what it takes!
This vid is a jewel, keep it up Joe.
Thanks!!!
Great video! Thanks for putting this out!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Spectacular! -- love this!!
Thanks so much!

Yeah for sure, so much more stable - than anything else! Such a great design.
Tornado quality designed by Rodney March in 1967, love this incredible fast boat!
This kind of boat would not be designed these days as it's not practical enough for the masses.
Great boat.
Most excellent.
Many thanks!
I love this!
Thanks!

I love my Tornado. It’s an old 1987 boat with the soft rig. Still moves along though.
Oh yeah. Nothing like it.

Good question - another for the Q+A today.
Beauty. Love to see the comparison between different boats. Looks like 94 bested the c2.
Oh yeah - on this occasion!
You on a tiger vs a tornado, and a tiger breaking your owm record of 23 knt.Cant wait to see
Great plan! I love it, going to have to push the tiger pretty hard to keep up!
@@JoyriderTV or maybe a newer design like the c2 vs the older tiger and see what happen
I'd be very interested in a video about inverting the top part of a square head mainsail
By increasing the downhaul to the maximum, the top of the sail really falls away to leeward, opens the leech and makes the whole sail very flat with the fullest part low and forward - this all equates to higher upwind speed.

Yes same with the Tornado - it just goes!

Yeah for sure. The Tornado is such a pleasure to sail (I thought that we'd be quicker)

Damn im kind of jealous, its too Smokey in California to be outside right now.
Stay safe! Hopefully you'll be able to get back amongst it soon
Its the hairstyle :)
Of course!
Ever had a look at an Australian 18 ft skiff?
Never up close - I've seen them out on the water - amazing looking boats.
Joe, the next comparison should be C2 and Wildcat. C2 should be a little faster.
Besides the extra beam the Tornado also weighs 55-60lbs less!!
I know it's an unfair fight. Unfortunately we don't have a wildcat.
Is there A anti wind noice microphone because i think that would lift your videos
I put a foam cover over my GoPro or at least over the mic holes. Helps cut down on wind noise a lot and is quite inexpensive
Yes, the new camera is struggling with the wind noise. I'm working on a few different solutions.
I’m sure you could do some audio postprocessing to get rid of it, for a free version checkout audacity
So when you are flying. To go faster, you create more downhaul on the main? I saw the boat went down after that and you sped past the other boat.
If the hull is in the air and we want to bring it down a little, pulling the downhaul is the most efficient way to do that and turns that energy into more speed.
@@JoyriderTV interesting and thank you! So is it correct in saying, if you want to go fly hulls you have less downhaul?
I think the extra beam of the Tornado makes it an unfair contest! Even with identical sail area the bigger beam makes it easier to control the boat in strong winds like in Vassiliki?
Yeah for sure, especially upwind or on the 2 sail reach.
Extra beam in Tornado is one thing, but 51(!) years between boats introduction is also a factor here.
Great! Are you getting paid for having fun? What a great kind of lifestyle!
Yes, i am extremely lucky to be in this situation!
The missing piece is a foiling Nacra 17!!!
Yeah for sure. Maybe we'll get one in the future.
What kind of watch do you use?
A Locosys GW60
C2 looks like the main is trimed wrong. Move the traveler a bit outboard and sheet harder. The twist off is killing it.

Yes, agreed. It was probably around 18 knots maximum wind. Can't remember what the boat speed was.
Yes, I should have switched at the half way point.
Time to stop picking on the C2!!
20ft vs 18ft is it a fair fight?
Let's get you on the C2 and have you slice and dice the tornado a bit
Yes, you're quite right, I'll see if i can recruit a team to pilot the T later this week.
Hot rod more like lukewarm rod.
Ha!
Mate you should really wear a hat
Thanks for the advice - I would except for these videos i have to strap the camera on!
