Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

So....one of your videos popped up on my home page yesterday. For some reason I clicked on it just to see what is was about. Well....about 6 or 7 of your videos later I still don't understand why I find it interesting..... please don't take that wrong. I am a builder here in Corpus Christi, TX and have never farmed before but love seeing how it all works now. We have lots of fields here....corn, cotton, and milo. Now I will understand more of what these farmers do as I drive by their fields. Keep up the hard work as I know farmers tend to be forgotten about till there is a shortage of some vegi at the store. Thanks!

We do mostly non GMO or IP beans on our farm for the food grade market in eastern Asia. A good weed control method is a decent preemerge(we used valtera up till now but it's apparently being discontinued) and having varieties that close up the canopies fairly soon helps. Yields can lag behind crusher beans somewhat but we have a really good local elevator and can get a good premium for these varieties.

Back in about 1987 the farmer that I worked for had a 2 wheel drive 6 cylinder Massey Ferguson that was shod with flotation tyres.
That tractor would have laughed at your 40 acres of "wetland".
If it had been coupled to a power harrow and fitted with a seed broadcaster on the front end, your last 40 acres could have been seeded in less than 2 days.

Back in about 1979, I overloaded my bosses 2 wheel drive Ford 7600 tractor at a sugar beat factory lime depository.
The gross weight was over 46,000 pounds, but the weight on the front axle was less than 2,000 pounds.

We actually plant half of our beans as NON GMO beans. It really is nice having that premium. For us they aren’t bad the weeds are defiantly a challenge . Making sure you get your residuals down is very important. What we plant is called emerge beans they are sold to China actually. As far as yield last year on our best ground we averaged 80 bushels per acre, but we did have sudden death in some fields and that hurt our total yield last year so we maybe averaged 65 bushel per acre on the non gmo beans. I just thought you would be interested in our experience. Good luck 👍

There are a lot of NON GMO's grown in my area, mostly IP's (identity protected). A Pre emerge coverage is important to suppress the weeds. as well as careful timing spraying the in season, some chemicals go on "hot" and will harm the soya plant. spraying before flower will help not reducing yield.

Comparing Herbicides For Weed Control In Non-GMO soybeans
    (Interim Report)
    Purpose:
Poor weed control in food grade non-GMO soybean causes significant losses in grain
yield and crop premium. Comparative trials were conducted at multiple locations over
multiple years so as to identify weed management programs that consistently provided
    acceptable weed control.
    Methods:
From 2008 to 2012, common herbicide treatments were applied in a randomized
complete block design at 3 different locations across Ontario (Eastern, Central and
Southwestern Ontario). Weed efficacy, expressed as a percentage of the un-sprayed
control at 4 and 8 weeks after application were collected. Grain yield was also collected
    Results:
Herbicide rates used in the tables below: Broadstrike RC (35 g/ac), Classic (14 g/ac),
Cleansweep (Pursuit at 126 mL/ac and Basagran Forte at 0.7 L/ac), Conquest LQ
(Pursuit at 126 mL/ac and Sencor at 250 mL/ac), Dual II Magnum (0.46 L/ac), Fierce
(experimental product, rate not available), Frontier Max (390 mL/ac), Prowl H2O (1
    L/ac), Pursuit (126 mL/ac), Sencor DF (0.233 kg/ac)
Table 1: Control of pigweed eight weeks after application of various herbicide
treatments at different locations in Ontario from 2008-2012.

I think the same way as you about GMO soys but in our area for the last several years elevators have offered undeniable premiums for non GMOs. My experience has been that GMOs branch out and non GMOs are just one stem full of pods so I think in 30 inch rows you will be losing yield. I'm not sure if all non GMOs are that way

I am from Argentina and close to where I live a farmer does planting without agrochemicals, this man achieves an average 200kg wheat crop lower than nearby fields that if they use agrochemicals, the difference is that while the last ones have a cost of 350 dollars per hectare. this man only needs 100 dollars,
also here the crops without agrochemicals have a value superior to the rest of 30% to 50%
there are farmers of that style in usa?

Wow, that sure is a change for you guys! It's sad to see how misinformation has changed the way we buy food, but hey, there's a market for it! We've been planting non-GMO Soybeans here in Central IL for a few years now. It's a hassle, but at least we've got that premium!

Good idea to try new things. Will you ever give organic a try? Understand you can sell at a premium.

Why do you plant 95-100 day corn but you plant early group 1 beans? We live in upstate New York so we have the similar weather to you and we plant 1.8-2.2 beans and 90-100 day corn

When marketing your non-GMO beans, how does the buyer really know they are non-GMO? Are there specific traits or visuals that help a buyer know that a bean is a non-GMO? I would expect the differences between a GMO and non-GMO would be at the microscopic level. Interested to see how the non-GMO beans do!

    • @matthewchisnall1976
      @matthewchisnall1976 5 років тому +1

Difference is at the molecular level. Requiring lab work to tell the difference, e.g. PCR

    Interesting
How do you clean combine so you dont get cross contamination?
My neighbor tried it and they found a hand full of gmo beans in his load (so they claimed) and rejected the hole load.
    I like the idea.
    Keep the great videos coming.

I can't see a few beans contaminating an entire load? We should be able to get the machine really clean with a quick vacuuming.

    • @brianm7589
      @brianm7589 5 років тому

After cleaning the combine we will harvest a couple acres and sell them as crush, after that you should be good. My experience is that buyers are extremely picky but if you meet the requirements it pays$$

In my country GMO is forbbiden....we use only no GMO seeds...i dont know how is it in USA but we after harvest season left soybean seed for next season and next season same, (We dont buy every seasons seed from big seed company, instead we use ours) rest we sell. Yield per Ha (metric units, 1Ha is about 2.2 us acre, and 1kg is about 0.27 bushels), in good year yield about 5.3t/Ha, in imperial us units is almost 80 bushels per acre...
Its good to see that you yanks plant no GMO soybean

If you can combine them first come bean time..will save you having to clean the combine out so you don't get GMO beans mixed in with them..

I plant 300 acres every year non gmo beans... Clean my own seed to plant every year... The savings from that alone is a big deal... I run cold iron threw them to help with weed control because diesel fuel as expensive as it is is alot cheaper than chemical... Sure I still have to spray but not as much... I have done this the last 30 years... No they won't compete with a gmo bean bushels per acre but the market I have for them pays a hell of alot better... Best of luck to you guys...
I tried to give Onelonelyfarmer a suggestion on his hay crop about M-Pact... But he gave me a smart ass reply that got him unsubed... I spray M-Pact on my beans when I'm spraying for weed control... The test plots sprayed were 6 to 8 inches taller... Mix it right in to the weed killer your using... An extra 5 to 10 bushel an acre makes it worth it for me... Just a suggestion I'm not saying it's right for you but it Definately works in my fields

Curious as to the price per unit for none GMO beans. Would like to know the final tally After spray and harvest. I think a changeup with herbicides is actually going to be a good thing. Before your time. Your dad will know this. Grasses use to be the hardest thing to control and are now the easiest. That’s what you’re going to run into with non-GMO’s
