  • A New Zealand woman made history on Christmas Day, becoming the first person with a Maori face tattoo to anchor a primetime newscast. Oriini Kaipara has been a journalist for almost 20 years, focusing on issues of the country’s indigenous Maori people. In 2019, she chose to get moko kauae, a traditional face tattoo for Maori women. That’s when she became the first person with such a tattoo to anchor a mainstream television program. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

No one is asking where this tribal tradition came from either. Probably, most likely it was a form of subjugation in a male dominated society. Ironically, just like today. Pacific Islander tribes had slaves and tattooed them to show ownership. Tattooed them under the eyelid in fact. Just because it's ancient and exotic doesn't mean it's a good decision or being woke. It's also against our rules and New Zealand policy if he/she comes from a cultural/group background.
