many of you expressed concern over my not addressing the controversy revolving mulan’s lead actress as well as not discussing the concentration camps in xinjiang (which is where the movie was filmed unbeknownst to myself). as i’m not familiar with many of the details surrounding these issues i felt it was not my place to speak on them, especially as far more qualified people have discussed it and i would hate to speak over them. i’ll include links to some articles below, but also feel free to comment more of them so we can all continue to learn. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/09/07/why-disneys-new-mulan-is-scandal/ www.flare.com/tv-movies/live-action-mulan-controversy-boycott/
Thanks for not throwing yourself at expressing an early opinion. These days opinions and cancellings, etc seem free accesories. Not everyone has the integrity to say "I don't know enough about this to talk or educate anyone about it", mad respect.
I wish you would’ve touched even a bit on the absolute atrocity that is the historical inaccuracy of the costumes, makeup, and culture, seeing as you’re a fashion channel. Mulan isn’t set in a specific dynasty (though it is usually in Northern Wei) but the costumes vary from all different dynasties. The color palette is horrendous and would never have been seen in Ancient China. They messed up the entire court life of China and made it like Versailles. The makeup is exaggerated and inaccurate, making them look like they are in the rococo era, but adding a slight hint of clown. The usage of tulou is confusing, as Mulan never had ANY adaptation with any connection to Fujian. The court officials are wearing the wrong dynasty clothing. Liu Yifei never voiced support for the CCP, she voiced support for the HKPD after Hong Kong protestors beat a mainland reporter up for disagreeing with them.
i was planning on doing a separate video discussing the costumes in depth but it would’ve taken a lot more time and research + it didn’t fit in with everything else i was “reviewing” in this video. also, this isn’t a fashion channel! i’ve made videos about actresses in the past (i just like clothes a lot 😅)
One thing that *really* bugged me was how Mulan's father in the remake was or at least seemed pretty happy to accept the emperor's gifts because he added the line "you have brought great honor to the family" when in the original the father threw the gifts on the ground and says "the greatest gift of honor is having you for a daughter" which is *WAY* more powerful and emotional
Yes!!!! I cried with the cartoon scenes with the dad! When he yells “Mulaaaan!!!” And falls to the floor, when he tells her that the flower that blooms in adversity is the most beautiful, and that last line you mentioned, i cry every time i see them in the cartoon. And then the movie is like “yieii finally, you did something good”
Keep in mind Fa Zhou in the '98 version was absolutely devastated when his little girl had run off to her almost certain death in order to protect him he truly believed that he would never see her again which was why he was so happy and relieved when Mulan came back he thought he lost his daughter forever
It shows growth in the dad as well. In the beginning, it seemed like all he cared about was honor. He became disappointed when Mulan failed her etiquette lessons because she didn't reach his expectations and felt she had dishonored the family. But going through not having his daughter with him for months at a time and even being afraid that she may possibly die , thought him that honor is not what matters. Him being with his daughter and loving her is what truly matters in the end. That's why that scene where they show us that the father doesn't care about the gifts is so powerful! Because we can see him more as a father to mulan and see how his perspective has changed. We can see his growth even if we didn't see him go through it. I just can't believe they destroyed this idea and image. It is so disappointing. Edit: as someone pointed out, her dad wasn't disappointed in her or think she had dishonored the family, he was simply sad about seeing Mulan sad. Which actually shows even more the great and loving character of her father, something that the live action missed completely :(
I actually have a big problem with qi being introduced in this movie. In the animated movie, Mulan was a regular person, like me and you, who took it upon herself to gather the strength and courage to do something extraordinary. That’s the lesson I learnt as a kid, « a single grain of rice can tip the scale », which meant me too, if I only worked up the courage to. But with qi, which is essentially a superpower, Mulan is already great and powerful and above us regular folks, and the only obstacle is that she has to « show her true self ». So, in my opinion, the whole lesson of the original movie has been lost :/
Yooooo sameeee, the way that they made her just a regular girl with extraordinary determination to a girl who’s just an exception to the rule and ~special~ was kinda annoying. Old mulan challenged the status quo while this mulan was put above it by default
even the original legend was about a fairly normal and (slightly above since she managed to defeat her own father in a fight) average woman. That strength she has was exerted through the years of war and being in the army, not in a lone-warrior fashion
@@LittleStrawbirdy They're kind of dying out, honestly. I mean, when's the last time we had a Maleficent? Or an Ursula? Mother Gothel is the only one who comes close.
True feminism is more about not being afraid to have a woman, who thinks for herself. Which is what they do, and NPCs hate it. Wonder Woman and Alita (liked by NPCs, both with superpowers) were told by men, what to believe, and then followed it religiously, as well as their original believe, which they never questioned. They are only extension of someone else's agenda. Disney's women (Mulan, Rey, Captain Marvel) meet their enemies, have discussion with them, understand each other's POV and are willing to change their mind. This makes them an active player, who can change things.
@@victorianoskov1441 the only think that i could think about Mushu being a "offensive thing" is that he breath fire, the asian cuture and the european/american culture is different in that case, well, the representation of Mushu like a dragon would it be more like an asiatic dragon if he breath water, the concept of a fire breath, dinosaur with wings is from europa, but the dragons in the asian culture are inspired in lizards, they are long, with horns, no wings and are the deities of the water. Maybe is offensive not only for the fire breath, some people think that its offensive because the voice actor is a black man...idk

I was so sad about Shang being removed. In another review video, they said the idea to remove him came from the metoo movement. The creators thought it was inappropriate to have Shang form a relationship with Mulan because he was her commander. Thus in their eyes an unbalance power dynamic and he could take advantage and such. Where they failed miserably. He never took advantage of her or treated her any different until her gender was revealed. Even then, he spared her life because he was in debt after her saving him. He cared about her but seemed like he didn't wanna admit it until towards the end. Hell, they didn't even form a relationship till AFTER the war was over and he wasn't her commander anymore. It was dumb to remove him, and now they suffer cause of that change 😤.
They could've made him equal in rang. They could start off as two soldiers who compete with each other. And then step by step become friends and help one another.
I also read somewhere that they removed him because it was speculated about him being bi? People thought he was attracted to “ping” Mulan in her male disguise and the homophobic Karen parents thought it was “inappropriate” to teach kids these things
@@Bbyyo- he is NOT bi. He appreciated ping for being a brave and resourceful soldier. After he found out ping was a girl, THEN he was attracted to her. I fries me when a man shows appreciation and friendship to another (supposed) man then everyone takes it and runs for the hills, making all kinds of ridiculous assumptions
Also Mulan was pretending to be a guy....Notice how Disney doesn't ever do LGBTQ+ relationships? Wow, Disney is transphobic and homophobic....when their trying to be more inclusive! Also I think Moana and Tiana are the ONLY BLACK princesses! Disney is so unoriginal as well ADAPTING STORIES, not WRITING ORIGINAL ones! Thanks for not making the world better Disney! Walt Disney's most famous quote is something like, "Anything is possible" but they don't add suppressed peoples in most of their stories! Sorry for this rant, it just needed to be said!
@@emiliereal104 I agree that Disney should do better. Just wanted to add that Moana is a POC, but she’s not black. Tiana is the only black Disney princess.
the problem with qi in this film is that that's not how qi works in real life, it's not some sort of special power. every single person has qi in them, qi does not descriminate. it's used mainly in medicine and martial arts. qi is the same in everyone, it's how the person channels and uses their qi that makes them powerful, and the person should be praised for their techniques not the qi itself.
“In real life” if you believe in it. Furthermore, qi might not work like that on paper but on Chinese Tv it is often portrayed as some sort of magic. So I guess, it’s not a problem that’s only related to Mulan
There’s absolutely no scientific evidence for Qi. At all. I mean, I get that people believe in it and all, but saying “ how it works in real life” assumes that it’s a proven, without question reality that we all experience.
@@rebeccaaliberti5053 yeah i know it's often upplayed in TV, but the logic is still the same and mulan did it wrong, and by real life i mean real life chinese culture its not just something made up for modern tv yk
@@j.r.r5863 even if it was not proven it's still a well defined concept that follows certain rules in chinese culture which is what i described above, and mulan just took the name and made it something else
I think they removed her relatability. In the original she wasn’t born with some kind of superhuman ability that she had to hide in order to pretend to be as weak as everyone else. She had to train hard and go through awkward situations and moments in order to become a good soldier. In this new movie, she was more like a superhero. She just wasn’t relatable. I think the songs would’ve been amazing. I mean, imagine the choreography of “Make a Man Out if You” in a live version. There was also something rushed about it and at the same time slow. The attempts at humor were corny and flat most of the time, and also came across as awkward( sometimes bizarre). I don’t know, I think this movie had a lot of potential. It also could have shown a relationship based on mutual respect and a real sense of equality, but it just kind of was very weird there too. All in all, it didn’t really deliver for me.
Faith I agree with you! I think that, and maybe this is just me, Disney is afraid of showing “weakness” in their female characters, but I think it’s so good and healthy to show that it’s okay to not have it together from the beginning to children. That we aren’t born perfect ( girls or boys). That our natural talents aren’t fully developed at birth and that others can be acquired through hard work and determination even if they don’t come naturally at first. That’s what made the original so inspiring to me as a little girl. Here was a young Mulan who had everything against her but by sheer conviction and perseverance she led an army and saved an empire. Now she’s been reduced to a Marvel character who was born a with super powerful Qi. Another issue I have with this movie is with the witch character. The antagonist role is split between her and the leader of the enemy army, but her ultimate redemption in the end kind of makes her role unnecessary. To me, her character would have added more to the story if she had actually been an awesome villain. That scene where Mulan and the witch are standing across from one another on the rooftop would’ve been mind blowing if she had been fully evil because ( to me) these two women represent the two possible responses to the double standard oppressing women within this culture: You could respond with bitterness and revenge ( like the witch, dressed in black all angry and ready to kill) or you could respond with hope, and strength like Mulan in her red flowing dress, ready to defend her home and her kingdom with honor. But by making her good in the end it kind of made her character just fall apart. By splitting the antagonist role between her and the leader of the Huns and then having her turn good so easily at the end they failed to create a strong enemy for the movie. In the original version Shan Yu was so obviously the central evil figure. In this one I feel like his character was very much neglected by the addition of the witch and so lazily put together that he kind of just fell to the background of the movie to the point that you kind of forget him and the army at times. Disney needs to know that a woman being portrayed as evil, and corrupted is not a bad thing either. That a powerful, vengeful female villain is fine too, and that this would’ve justified the character of the witch more than some weird out-of-nowhere redemption story that just kind of made this character useless and only ended up taking away from the development of the central evil figure. Another thing is that you don’t need to make the male characters weak in order to make the female characters look strong. ( I noticed this in Frozen II as well when they just kind of kick Chistof to the curb). In Mulan they failed to show men using Qi. If they had actually done this we would’ve seen the double standard more clearly between how this ability is perceived and developed in men and women. Instead we’re kind of left to feel like she’s the only one in the army ( and in everyday life) that has this very strong, out of this world Qi that has never been seen before ( or for a long time). It’s very messy. I would personally love to see a Disney movie that has a very strong couple where both the man and woman are well developed, vulnerable, strong, and intelligent. Imagine the impact it would have in the way children see love if a healthy relationship based on mutual admiration, trust, and respect was shown to them at a young age? This was something that could have been done with this movie. Imagine if they had left the role of Shang alone( I don’t really understand why he had to be made a soldier of a love interest was going to be part of the movie anyway) , and they had shown a strong woman and a strong man hold each other up and admire one another deeply in a spirit of true equality where neither one of them feels threatened by the other’s strength or talent but actually is built up and encouraged by what they see in the other. Man! It could’ve been an amazing movie. They really missed a great opportunity to hit audiences hard with this one.
this is the "captain marvel effect". for a strong female character to exist, they think she has to be flawless and unstoppable. show characters messing up and learning from mistakes. its boring to watch characters do stuff perfectly
The art of kungfu is gifted not everyone can do it and is not easy, just like that Mulan was gifted with it and also she did train since a young age with her father's sword.
@@eisbar9962 Wttf are you talking about? The animated was the one who had to train hard for her abilities, the live action didn't train at all, seh was already good from the beggining and had superpowers
Yeah for me the first one shows how mulan trained extra hard to become the best and ended up respected by others. The part where she needs to climb a pole also shows where everyone started to get inspired by her and when all of the soldiers started working harder and became strong so it’s sad they took it off. (Also it seems so fkg hard to do so it’s 10 times mor impressive)
When Mulan ran away to join the army in place of her father, Cartoon: no! My daughter! She’s gone! She could die! New movie: ugh! Here she goes again! I’m so pissed
Someone mentioned in the original scene for that leaving home montage was fricking heartbreaking watching the dad run out and then tripping and dropping the clip. I personally agree, he probably cared less that she "did it again", he cared that his daughter was gonna be gone, that she might die! The baby girl he watched grow up! Meanwhile, the other guy literally cares more his armor than his own daughter! The final line of, "If I reveal her, she will be(in response to Mom saying that she will be killed if they don't go after her)", is so hard hitting. Meanwhile, "Mulan did this!", again, like he's angry his daughter was trying to save him! Gah, sorry about that, this is so angering to know about.
When she’s back it is worse He’s happy to see the gifts but in the animation he throws it aside, not caring about them becuase his kid is more important
I hated from the beginning (watching the trailer) that this Mulan had a totally different personality which nobody could identify with. The animation one was smart, but clumsy and VULNERABLE. She wasn't a super hero. She went through a process that required courage, ability and discipline. She won the battles thanks to the combination of her intelligence and strength that she got in the army. The actress looks so cold and bland, like she's a robot, not a person. And I don't understand why swapping characters, changing their names and personalities. What's the point? Nostalgic fans won't like it, new audiences won't care...So it makes absolutely no sense.
At some point she "explains" to her sister how she has no expression on her face so maybe that was a trait the director wanted her to have? Can't see why that'd be a choice for this movie, though.
original mulan earned her strength by working hard and doing her best. this mulan was just given power bc magic. original mulan inspired young children to believe that it doesnt matter how you were born, your choices and hard work will get you where you want to go as long as you keep at it and dont give up. the new mulan says that unless you are born with some kind of power you dont really matter
Ignoring my dislike of how un-disney this film is, I hate the new powers Mulan has. In the animated film, she was totally unprepared for the war. She really struggled to keep up because she was starting from nothing. But she worked hard, and she was smart. That's what I loved about her. She was determined to prove herself, and to fight for her country. Just like you said in the video, there are no stakes during the training. You don't get the huge payoff as she earns the respect of the soldiers. Also I miss her -cow- horse
Honestly, after The Little Mermaid (Because, let's be honest, I have a stupid amount of hope for it) they should stop remakes entirely and work on new content. Thankfully, they are working on a new movie that focuses on a girl in Columbia who is powerless in a family of people who do have powers.
@@amandalynn4979 wait they're really doing that? Since when? When Disney first started doing the remakes, I have to admit I was excited. Excited to see these animations come to life but really the only decent ones have been Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Can they stop?
I have to disagree with having more characters use "Chi". No, they should not even include it the way they did. Because that's not really Chi in this movie. It's like the director or screenwriters watched Naruto and then told themselves "Well, Chi is also Asian stuff so we will use it the same way as Chakra in Naruto, it will be fine."
Exactly! Chi/Qi isn't even a superpower in Chinese culture. It's literally another part of your body. So making Chi such a big deal in this movie is like saying to someone "Oh, you can breathe! What an epic superpower that nobody else has!"
@@nataliamidzio exactly,, chi is supposed to be the life force of living things, not a superpower to be harnessed,, and take note **all living things** not just men
Part of the thing with qi too is the fact that in the animated film Mulan’s strength was her intelligence. She didn’t climb the pole using brute force, she “cheated” it by realizing she could use the weights to work for her. She didn’t charge recklessly into battle, she used her brain and aimed at the mountain to cause an avalanche. Basically there are different kinds of strengths
Didn't she do the same - showing intelligence when she tricked the enemy army into thinking there were reinforcements coming from behind and had them shoot themselves to defeat by hitting the ice/snow?
@@eatcheesekobe She literally magically appeared behind enemy lines in the matter of seconds while being far away and survived by sheer luck, not to mention that she was kicking weapons left and right as if that won't actually slice her leg.
@@eatcheesekobe but that's the only time in the remake when she uses her head and even then that tactic didn't make sense because she somehow flanked BEHIND enemy lines WITHOUT anyone seeing her and in the original movie she always uses her head even when fighting Sha Yu, in the remake she doesn't use her brain, it's all strength, areobics and Qi powers
Disney: "Dragons aren't real and we want realism, so no Mushu" Also Disney: "Let's add in a witch, a phoenix that serves no purpose whatsoever, and make Mulan into a superhero part of Cirque du Soleil"
OMFG right?! i was complaining to my bf at all of the moments that were unrealistic when they offed Mushu and the singing. Literally the first 5 minutes with that Qi move when she was 8... And no music, "because ppl don't sing while going to war," except THEY DID. God, this movie kills me
I see where they wete going for. They didnt want mushu because he was a conedic character and this isnt a comedy. However, i think they could have introduced singing and more interesting characters while maintaining the same theme
I was disappointed. The supporting characters were bland and had no personalities and that disappointed me. It also wasn't as dark as the cartoon, so the stakes were lower because the villains seemed less threatening. Thank you for making this video! You spoke my mind. The witch made the main Bori Kong way less threatening.
@@Wolfy39565 An example is the scene after singing the "Girl Worth Fighting For". It was so abrupt and dark compared to hoe they were just joyously singing seconds before.

As an ethnic Chinese, I must say I am surprised that you caught that issue of the grandma being replaced by the sister and how that no longer gives Mulan a sense of pressure to be the perfect daughter. Exactly! Usually in a Chinese family, when there is only one girl, that girl bears the sole responsibility of marrying off to a good husband to bring material wealth in the form of dowries and bring honour to the family (while the boy is under even greater responsibility to "carry on the family line"). Hence Mulan was under great pressure as the only child and daughter, a critical element missing once there is a sister as a "backup". Kudos for pointing that out!
@D Lu yes I am aware that in one of the early version of the story, Mulan actually has two siblings, both a younger sister and younger brother. But I am simply writing in the context of the Disnified version of Mulan, and comparing the animated to the 2020 version as this video is all about. Sure, the 2020 version does try to be a tad closer to the more traditional versions of the story, but doing so in this case ended up taking out an element which would have contributed to the rather flat character portrayed in the 2020 version. If they bothered to fully flash out the pressure she would have felt to marry before her sister, then yes, that would be a good improvement. But to be honest, it will not exactly be believable unless the two actresses change their roles. Brutal, but may actually be closer to fact. lol
Disney needs to learn that feminist characters aren’t impossibly strong ~girlbosses~, but realistically flawed women. Time and again they try to push “feminism” by making the protagonist nearly perfect (they did it with this and with beauty and the beast and maybe Cinderella, though I haven’t watched that in years) when really they’re just emphasizing the sentiment that women have to be perfect to be acceptable
That’s why I prefer flawed characters like Korra and Captain Marvel. Characters like Wonder Woman are too perfect and flawless for my taste. Shame they made Mulan into a Wonder Woman.
I hated the witch element all together. I felt like she was just too supernatural and powerful nothing would have felt like a genuine win. I didn't care for the sister, and honestly I didn't like how they switched up the parents. They never seemed disappointed, or resented their daughter they were trying to get her married but not like she was an item just culturally normal. Plus it made the mom seem almost mean in this movie. I hated Mulan as a character because they made it seem like they're aren't drawbacks to her being a girl and there are no physical limitations. Mulan wasn't athletic or had a knack for fighting. She was a girl doing the right thing and wanted to save her father. She put doing the right thing above everything else. Which the original paid off time and time again. This movie just pisses on that. It's like well she's a damn superhero at this point it's almost selfish if she don't do something. Also it makes me mad because women do have to work hard and train to not only beat the boys but be better in instances. She just magically can do everything and I'm like how is this relatable???
@@animegirl8033 The problem here is that Mulan 2020 also screwed up the original ballad: as Mulan was an ordinary mortal in that poem. Mulan's original ballad: normal woman who takes her dad's armor to save him from the draft, spends 10 years in the military, becomes a general, war ends, she returns home to her normal life, and her comrades learn her secret after the fact. Mulan '98: normal woman who takes her dad's armor to save him from the draft, trains to become a skilled soldier, war ends, she returns home to her normal life: the changes here are the fact that the war doesn't last 10 years, and that she's outed *before* the war ends. Mulan 2020: woman who is Qi-sensitive (read: Force-sensitive!) from birth takes her dad's armor to save him from the draft, doesn't need training b/c already skilled, war ends and she starts to return to her normal life--except the emperor's envoy requests that she return to the military as a soldier b/c she's a BADASS. While Mulan 2020 left out Mushu, Cricket (as an actual insect), and the songs from the 1998 adaption, it's actually less-faithful to the ballad than said Mulan '98.
@.Animegirl. Did the legend Mulan have Captain Marvel superpowers? Even the Chinese directed movie and drama have mulan being a normal girl crossdressing to save her dad. Sure she learned martial arts in some adaptations but she isn't some magical entity. That removes the whole purpose of the story! That Mulan was just an ordinary girl doing extraordinary things...not because she was special but because it was right.
I dislike how inconsistent they made the abilities of everyone. For example the emperor who looks old enough to be Mulans grandpa can catch an arrow while tied up but the witch who tears through soldiers like wet paper can't.
disney: removes mushu, the beautiful songs and the powerful hair scene "we're making a realistic movie on Chinese culture" also disney: includes a shape-shifting witch who can turn into an Eagle and mulan having superpowers "I mean we wanted to make money k"
Nowadays I really hate it when people use the word "realistic" to describe a movie or something. There is nothing realistic about the way Mulan is set up in this film, or in how any of the characters really develop. Things happen for the sake of happening and I hate it. btw uhhhh watch treasure planet, genuinely has some of the most realistic interactions I've ever seen
I didn't mind taking the hair cutting scene out because regardless of gender cutting hair back then would be considered extremely disgraceful and would mark her as a convict so it would basically blow her cover... like instantly
Everyone who worked on the film was white lol so apparently they got a bunch of things wrong (phoenix don't rise from the ashes in Chinese lore, witches aren't really a thing, the makeup was off).
Mulan's father in the animated version: Oh no.....my only daughter took my armor and left....she left and it's my fault, she left and might die because of ME!! Oh God, why!? Mulan's father in the live action version: Well shit, Mulan took my armor. Fuck.........well at least we got her sister. How the hell did they ruin this scene? Legitimately one of the most heartbreaking scenes in a Disney animated movie, especially if you're a father yourself, and they fucked it up completely.
I'm just here to say "aye nice name". I used to use AzureRoze as my username for a few things...I mostly just like seeing someone else throwing azure in their names
I think we need to understand chinese culture and philosophy in order to understand why they changed so much things. I heard that chinese people hated the animation because they disrespected their culture and philosophy. It was too west oriented philosophy. Chinese philosophy is different from western’s. In the ancient China, they privileged honour and wealth before anything else. And disobedience was a dishonour and an absolute humiliation for the whole family, even of it was for a noble reason. It was worst than death. I think if Mulan really existed, she would have been executed by the emperor even if she saved him because she was a woman, lied to everyone and dishonored her whole family. Making her as an exemple for chinese people to not follow in order to keep some authority over the people. It’s sad but I think this is how ancien China’s politic worked. So I don’t really mind these changes as long as it respects China’s history and accuracy. :) This Mulan may wanted to be more realistic than the animated one and be more true to the real Mulan story.
People love under dog stories. The fact that she had to train her MIND and BODY and became one of the best warriors to rival ANYONE was what made her nit only endearing but inspiring. This current movie just gave her "chi". They essentially turned a relatable & tangible human into a semi super hero😒
The reason I loved Mulan in the original is because she started off being unconfident and insecure when she she first joined the army but through hard work she grew confident and strong. In this one she starts of confident and strong- there’s no arc. In the original I think she inspired a lot of young girls that even if your not very confident you can become strong.
@@jackwilkins7972 true!! Her only "clumsy" moment was her perfectly catching all of the cups and the teapot only to trip and fall. Like, that isn't clumsiness if you can be that skillful, it's just a misstep.
Well said👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It is about a girl who grows up to be a strong woman, who does not care about what society wants or expects from her and how strong she is at the end.
I love Mulan’s journey because she succeeds only when she stops trying to live up to expectations of either gender. The “strongest” woman was beautiful, serene and poised, the “strongest” man was unkempt, forceful and arrogant. The soldiers and Mulan failed to climb the pole when they relied only on brute strength. Mulan had to use balance and patience to successfully climb it. Same thing at the mountain, when the regiment thought the only way to fight was strength against strength, like the arm-wrestling competitions. And again when the palace doors were barred and they tried to force them open. Not only did Mulan use the climbing technique, but she also used beauty and the female invisibility that Mushu had previously commented upon to fool the guards. Mulan’s strength was combining the lessons taught to her as a woman and those taught to her as a man. She was never going to excel at either gender, but she could definitely excel at just being Mulan.
My problem with this movie is Mulan screams, "I'm not like other girls". She chases chickens, climbs roofs, knows martial arts, and has a powerful 'qi' - she's definitely not like other girls. It's a bad case of mary sue. The old Mulan actively wanted to be a good daughter and future wife; and she effortlessly failed to do those things because she lacked those skills. Old Mulan builds her character over time, but in the movie she just comes off uninteresting and bland. Disney completely butchered the relationship between Mulan and her friends. Dialogue was really awkwardly delivered and show no real relationship between her and the men. Some of the characters can speak perfect english, I don't know why they had to speak with a fake asian accent. Stop whitewashing asian movies, and just let asians be asian.
I keep writing this and now I'm laughing because I see you've got this idea too. I thought we left this idea dead in my high school years where it belonged. Dead. Ugh thank you. THIS. Someone please kill "I'm not like other girls" dead. Yeah I'm not like other girls either. I limp when I walk. SOOOOOO INTERESTING OOOOH. Unfortunately this was written for an Asian (Chinese) audience like that stupid The Great Wall and most of Asia is not receiving this well. Good. I'm glad. This is what this movie DESERVES for doing this. Good. Work with the Chinese government. That doesn't mean actual Chinese citizens will like you.
@Ari Jappendi Even western countries culture have been taken by christianity. I grew up with christianity, but I am very curious about other cultures, and the natural religion in my own country, before christianity came. The whole world need to treasure their national culture more; in my opinion, diversity for the sake of diversity is not nessicarily a good thing. America is a very 'young' country; their only 'past' is christianity. Except for the Indians; they have a very beautiful ancient culture, and I hope at least some of it remains. But the rest of the world, they had their own beliefs before christianity, their own tradition and culture. And much of it have been lost unfortunately. I think it have happened some hundreds of years slower in for example asian countries, and other places on earth. Cultures which deserve to be preserved; also in western/scandinavian countries. But the 'modern' american culture does creep into most countries eventually. But it is not americans 'fault' that other cultures are lost; it is the people who choose to abandon their own traditions in favour of something else. They are doing that of their own free will.
I agree and disagree. The first point is definitely accurate for me lol, its annoying to see "im not like other girls" bullshit while the original Mulan portrays otherwise. And Mulan is not a warrior princess that is gifted with martial arts since baby or some shit then had to hide it because "women shouldnt be stronger than men" altough i understand that they probably trying to adjust to the timeline. (Because during that era, women arent allowed to fight and should larn household chores instead). However its still ridiculious because there are no flying lady bird or phoenix flying around then 😑. And the second point, its not actually white washing because they are not replacing the asians with caucasian actors & actresses. As for the accent, i think its istill understandable because their target market is international level therefore they pick people who speak clear english. Im sure it will be the same for the live action of snow white.

I honestly believe that giving superpowers to Mulan was the most stupid thing they could do. What's the lesson then? If she has to do absolutely nothing to success?
@S3LL-27 Wong Sin Hei That's exactly what I'm talking about. They didn't give her a real chi, they directly gave her superpowers under de excuse of "Chi".

Solid review. I haven't seen the movie yet (since I refuse to pay $30 to rent it) but I could tell the live-action version would definitely be lacking in more than a few ways.
It’s available for free with the Disney+ subscription if you wait until December to watch it. That’s what I’ll be doing as I’m in no rush to watch it now for an extra $30 on top of what I already pay for Disney+.
So I’ll admit I haven’t seen the movie (I hate the Disney remake trend and there’s too many controversies surrounding this movie to warrant a watch), so take my views with a grain of salt. But going off of the other live action movies they really fail to understand why these characters resonate deeply with people, other than a surface level analysis. The animated Mulan wasn’t Arya Stark. She didn’t have a rejection of feminine ideals and she wasn’t born a warrior princess, she just saw things differently from others. Her biggest strength and resource was her mind and thinking outside the box. That’s how she retrieved the arrow, caused the avalanche, broke into the palace, and defeated Shan Yu. Also speaking of Shan Yu, he’s quite an underrated villain. During the final confrontation where Mulan reveals that she caused the avalanche, he doesn’t go into a misogynist rant of “oh no I was bested by a GIRL?!”. He called her a soldier then proceeded to try and kill her. To me that’s more of an interesting character than lady bird
Shan Yu reacted that way since in the Hun Army (and civilization) females were highly respected and seen as great leaders in fighting and other things. Which proves old Disney actually did care about their characters back then, whereas now they're just trying to make a quick buck and ruining all kinds of things
@jackie nope Mulan was feminine in a way but not *hyperfeminine* she was just acting like an average girl. An example is when Mulan says "just because i look like a man doesn't mean I have to smell like one" when she's about to shower. Another would be when she was legit crushing on Shang the whole time
jackie that’s not exactly the point. In China back when Mulan took place, females weren’t really meant to do anything the men could. And Mulan only ever disguised herself as a guy to get into the army. She embraced her femininity, just not a hyper sense of it
What pissed me off the most, though, was that Mulan didn't cut her hair in the armor scene. That was the best moment in the film because she as she cut her hair, she also cut away the beliefs that she had grown up with, that she had to be the perfect bride to honor her family. Her cutting her hair was a metaphor for removing toxic beliefs that women live with and the fact that they didn't have that scene pissed me off. And also the fact that she was portrayed as perfect because she had chi. Disney basically took a powerful feminist icon who stands for the basic views of feminism that you should be true to yourself no matter what and turned her into a Mary Sue.
In ancient Chinese belief, your body was a gift given to you by your parents. To cut any part of it off was to spit in their parents face, which is why both men and woman have long hair. They cut it out to be more historically accurate
I heard that they cut that scene out because of "authenticity" cus back then, every part of your body was considered your parent's so no one was allowed to cut their hair because it would be treated as a criminal offense. except for chidren because their parents would do it for them, and monks. And even if you get your parent's permission no one would know and you would still be punished.
The cutting the hair part in the 1998 movie actually made a lot of drama in China cause you're not supposed to cut your hair in ancient China. The act of cutting your hair is shameful because they are given by your parents. If you cut your hair/don't take care of it for no good reason, then you'll be ostracized and treated as a crazy person. People do get haircuts, but they don't throw it away, they keep it in a fancy box.
@@lilyorsman1427 yeah but if you are going to be more historically accurate hen do it when it matters more/with stronger points, why have the chi be like a superpower?.
so many characters and personalities were missing. how do you replace mushu with a cgi pheonix man. 2020 mulans character development was so lackluster too :(
Disney like: **NO SHANG** Women can't fall in love with their superior officer, that's a power imbalance. **No MUSHU** Sassy, funny dragon played by black guy isn't culturally sensitive **No Cricket, No Grandma, No Singing** We want this movie to have a more gritty and realistic tone. Also Disney: Let's turn Mulan completely boring and remove any of the character development she had in the original. Let's take away the inner resolve and creativity she showed in the first movie, and give her have superpowers instead. So basically Disney took everything fun out of the original in order to avoid offending people, and instead gave us something so bland and heartless everyone was offended by the fact that they took a beloved character and threw it in the trash.
a realistic tone? dude. disney is dumb. little girls, boys or nonbinary children do not want to watch a movie without anything fun and without music or humour. this isnt a history documentary. now im scared what the little mermaid live action will be like because all disney live action movies have never been that good and ive never enjoyed.
@@non5025 yeah but like imagine if disney just gave up on making the l8ve action and basically ironically make a documentary complete with memes and the budget of the film is like 50 dollars or sth and it become a blockbuster that everyone loves.
Should have given Disney: - An Apple for Serenity - A Pendant for Balance - Beads of Jade for Beauty And - A Cricket just for Luck and even Disney can't blow it
Idk my mom hates both films either way (not saying she doesn’t think that Disney animators are talented). But still, I have absolutely no clue what the chi “powers” had to do with anything

@@kiwisfrommommy They were good visual-wise (Unpopular opinion: I think that most Disney remakes beats the originals in this particular field). The stories, however..... But I liked Aladdin too.
ig its who they choose to make them like i bet if they got someone who truly loves the film so much and even studies it. I mean for Frozen they did research on Norway and added some elements to the movie. Couldn't they have done that for Mulan? If they make face characters at Disney Parks study the characters and their mannerisms couldn't the ones who made the movie done the same. That's all I'm saying. Still the only live action remakes I liked are Cinderella and Aladdin everything else doesn't have that disney touch.
This is not remake it's only make a bold of the points of mulan, in other words mulan is a woman who safe the dinasty of china and being a worrior amongs the man
Also: why do remakes always portray women as these perfect characters, who do not need any learning and are just born to do everything right? Where is the feminism in that? A true woman knows she’s not perfect and works towards her goals. No one is born knowing everything
@@animegirl8033 Are you chinese? I’m gonna guess not because of the way you worded the sentence, personally I don’t find him that offensive (maybe not even at all).
This new Mulan movie is basically saying “In a world of princesses, be a soldier” and it tells women what to do/be in order to be considered a shero or boss or strong. She’s a “pick-me” girl! A Mary Sue!!! True feminism is saying you can be whatever and whoever you want to be. The 98 Mulan was just an ordinary girl who through her wits and determination, did extraordinary things. Which I as an asian American who struggled with my asian and American identities related so much to. This 2020 Mulan was born with powers, was so much better than everyone else already, which gave me the message that I either had to be one way or another to be good, if I wasn’t already born with powers, then I’ll just be like her sister who has no personality, no nothing and is destined to a life of being matched and married and live as a house wife. Disney thinks they can just throw us a powerful woman and call it feminism and women’s empowerment. No. That’s now that feminism and women’s empowerment is. That’s straight up tone deaf sexism and we ain’t here for that shit
No, no ,no. It's even worst, because this Mulan has superpowers. And it has nothing to do with the "in a world of princesses be a warrior", because yoi can't be a warrior without super powers, acording to this version of Mulan. So basicallh is just telling you, you're a failure.
I wish they showed the struggle she went through like the first movie It was amazing seeing how much she grew instead of “Hey I’m powerful this is a piece of cake”
Companies like to exploit nostalgia and it never works out in their favor. Too bad they will never learn from their mistakes, no matter how many times they make it.
I found the narrative that "we cut off Li Shang because this is a story about a woman, she needs no man, she can't fall in love with her superior" by Disney as absolute trash. Mulan and Li Shang weren't living a love story during the war🙄 they were both fighting to keep their land safe from invaders. Li Shang never abused his power to hurt her. In fact, he let her go alive( albiet, by cruelly abandoning her) when he found out her secret. The only time he approached her slightly romantically is _after_ the war, and he visited her house, meeting her family. He gave her full credit and trusted her judgement despite living in a time period where misogyny was the "norm." You can make it a story about female strength without cutting off a male character, because it always was one.
I totally agree, growing up in america I was always looked down and made fun of for being quote on quote "girly" now I dont act girly anymore but I still like the most cute and girly things
@@noriii According to Feminism, ideas of masculinity and femininity are social constructs forced upon men and women by the patriarchy in order to keep women down. Therefore, in order to achieve equality, men must be reconditioned to be more feminine and women must be reconditioned to be more masculine. Then, the genders are just one blob and anyone can choose to be anything! ... except people who choose traditional gender roles. They cannot be what they want, because what they want is oppressive.
"She learned to accept who she was. She was a smart, fish-out-of-water who found her place as an amazing warrior while learning to embrace the femininity she had previously spurned ... we should be teaching children that there's nothing wrong with being 'girly', and it doesn't make you less strong or less smart." As a woman who's gone through military training, this message needs to be given to every girl on the planet. Thank you for stating it so eloquently!!
Another thing that bothered me about this was the fact that they made Mulan a southern Chinese woman when in fact she was a northern mongolic nomad (according to the earliest forms of Mulan's legend). She knew how to ride a horse and use a bow and arrow because she was a nomad; all nomadic women did. Yet in the movie they made her have some power that only men are supposed to have, which completely takes the female empowerment aspect away.
@@emmak2971 The story of Hua Mulan was set in the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. Mulan’s family was born in the North, and served the Northern Wei dynasty founded by the Tuoba clan of Xianbei, who were Turco-Mongol people. The Northern Wei had introduced a reform which led to the adoption of Han customs and the Chinese governing model. And yes, there were many Han citizens, but that didn’t change the fact that the imperial family was Xianbei, not ethnic Chinese. (Not the version you asked for but the place)
My mom told me this when we watched the new Mulan: She said that she came from a small, poor village. As a kid/teen she HAD to bring many buckets of water up from the bottom of a hill to the top. Sure it wasn’t a mountain, but the hill was steep and the mountain and this path way. So yeah I just wanted to say that to show how bad they made the I lll make a man out of you scenes.
Two things I really admire about this review: 1) Your thoughtful ways of using the new elements in more organic ways (the phoenix, qi in men vs women, The Witch as a foil to Mulan). It's a gracious critique and I'm here for it! 2) Recognizing that Mulan doesn't reject femininity in the original animated film. I haven't seen that mentioned in other reviews and it's a big part of why I love the original version.
In the old Disney, Mulan is funny, quirky, you like her immediatly. In the new Disney, she's so boring, you don't want to be friend with her, i haven't watched the movie but by the scenes you showed she didn't smile even once, she has no expressions, she seems sad the whole time. Old Mulan is my favorite Disney princess because she's so friendly.
Maybe Disney has this weird ideology that the main female protagonists of the story must be devoid of all emotion to show how ‘’’powerful’’’ they are (and fEMiNiSm!i!)..like Captain Marvel
Sorry, but that's based on the actual story. Would you expect a funny, quirky, clumsy girl in a camp full of men? Of course, Disney only adapted that because it's still a children's show. Do you realise how unrealistic it was? Mulan 2020, is going to be more serious because that was the circumstances and it's not a children's show- a character doesn't have to set for the audience to laugh at
“Qi” IS NOT TO BE USED LIKE THAT. The creators just googled the definition of it without going in deeply to the roots of the meaning of the word... every Chinese words have 1-100+ meanings that’s why we don’t have robot like alphabets which u just memorise. Chinese words have different meaning when used in different sentences which is quite a hard thing to make an English based ancient China movie with if your not really familiar with Chinese.
Alphabets don't signify words, they signify sounds. But yes, if they wanted to make this movie "more Chinese", they should have hired a Chinese director and Chinese script writers. Unfortunately many Western "liberals" are closet bigots who fancy themselves "open minded", "educated", etc, and don't even realize that they have a patronizing attitude towards other cultures.
@@AnnaMarianne they did hire some Chinese, but I think most of the. can't even bi called Chinese anymore, they have a Chinese blood but their culture is completely westernized
@@lema618 "chi" is the cantonese spelling and "qi" is the mandarin spelling so neither are wrong. Just because China speaks mandarin now doesn't mean that was the spoken dialect at the time or even the same dialect as the original poem.
One of the small aspects I love about the animated version is that the main villain seems to be the only person in the film that didn't care the Mulan was a girl. He saw her as a powerful warrior and threat and fought her accordingly.
Mulan had to work for her strength which made the "Make a Man Out of You" sequence so special. It showed how Mulan was determined and how she had to be smart to win battles. Not that she was over fucking powered and the answers just came to her. I was confused about where her strength came from. Chi just made Mulan a Mary Sue if you ask me. And yes, a lot of Disney princesses are Mary Sue's but not Mulan. I did not like the new Mulan movie. Also if you would like to watch it for free: . to
Hate to be that person but which other princesses are Mary Sues?? Because to me the classic one’s can’t be since they don’t even have agency (they can’t fail because they don’t take action) and the ones with powers ( rapunzel, moana and Elsa) have their imperfections and flaws that they have to overcome, and they also fail. Not trying to start an argument or anything, just curious because I had never heard the Mary Sue criticism towards Disney princesses
laeno wouldn’t call Merida a Mary Sue as the whole film Revolves about her trying to own up to her fuck ups and she gets overpowered by her mother, the bear, her society, the men. And then I wouldn’t really call aurora a character💀☕️🥴 and even then she gets overpowered by maleficent very very easily
Susana Lopez I honestly think Elsa and Rapunzel are a Mary Sue's. Mary Sue's are known to have dark pasts, which both do. Then as you said, the powers. Literally both of their powers end up saving the day and they're really over powered. Plenty of Mary Sue's have the power to heal and others that are super strong. They don't even develope Elsa in the sequel and I feel like they made Rapunzel worse in Tangled the series. With that said, I definitely agree with you on Moana. Moana didn't have the answer given to her. She had to be smart to fix the problem. She didn't have this overpowering power that gave her the answer like the princesses I named (not the old Mulan) And I disagree with the fact that some princesses don't take action. Belle saved the beast, Anna her sister, Tiana basically killed the shadow man, Pocahontas saved John Smith, should I go on? The point is Disney princesses do take action but it just isnt right on how their character is written.
Lil_Mis_Cringey for princesses who don’t take action I mean as in cinderella Snow White and Aurora exclusively hehe. I don’t hate their characters but to me the problem is that they are barely characters, I do love me my cinderella since she is my childhood fave and I understand they are more of a product of their times. And for your point I understand it now, though I feel like elsa’s powers are what cause all of the problems, and I’ve alway’s seen rapunzel’s naïveté and as what she needs to overcome (though I do find her to be one of the princesses with to be the most “perfect” in a sense). Haven’t finished watching tangled the series and I can see your criticism about frozen two. I still disagree that they are Mary Sues but Now I see how one would see them as such
Political issue aside. This movie is just so terrible😭 if they removed mushu to make it more relatable, then why add a Witch in it? The witch doesnt have any purpose in the movie. And Mulan is not an average girl, she ready has a superpower. Unlike the original story, Mulan was a common girl who worked hard to earn her power. The script is so dull. The actress is REALLY bad at acting. She managed to make the funny scene boring. Ah so many wrong thing in this movie.
The Dragon thing must be out of respect for the Chinese. I've read that the Chinese didn't like Mushu's comedic portrayal, since Dragons are considered sacred beings in Chinese culture, and they should be treated reverently.
@@tanjiroukamado5766 I'm a Chinese and most people I know love Mushu, not sure if people from other places in China are ok with it or not tho Besides, from my personal understanding, dragon used to resemble the Chinese emperor, but we don't have emperors now so it's only a mythical creature everybody adores during festivals
lol the original Mulan was more relatable and had a great character arc. She wasn't good at anything and she had poor self-esteem. She proved herself by over coming hardships. The original Mulan had heart. Also her grandma freaking stole the movie. I would've pay to watch a Disney movie about Mulan's grandma than re-watching the 2020 Mulan live action movie
or maybe they could keep the fact that she is talented but lose it a bit cos of the supression and after training and encouragement from her fellas she regain it and become the best out of everyone
I completely agree on the Qi or "chi" as I pronunced it in my language. The problem with this concept is that on the new movie it doesn't show the effort Mulan had to make to improve her fighting. I was really upset that they didn't follow the original animated movie where she was actually kicked out of the army because she didn't know how to fight. She had to make a super effort to be a great soldier and she was super capable! This effort is not reflected in the movie, and this doesn't make any sense since she was NEVER trained as the other men! That really upsets me because we all identify with the original Mulan, where she had to fight for her dreams instead of being a good fighter without a process, without training or any effort at all. :(
The animated Mulan was actually relatable. She wasn’t born knowing how to fight, she didn’t have powers, she was normal when she started. But in the live action she’s an ultimate Mary Sue.
I do think including qi in the movie conveys a really different message (and a terrible one). Now, Mulan is a strong, smart and talented woman because she has a stronger qi, because she is special. What about Mulan is strong, smart and talented because women can be as strong, smart and talented as men ? It somehow makes it seem like she is as good as men because she has superpowers, therefore "average" women aren't as good. I haven't seen the movie so maybe I am wrong and the movie managed to not convey that message but this is how I feel learning about this twist.
you're exactly right,, i watched the movie w/ my family (pirated obv and left at like the ending cuz it didn't interest me) you don't have to watch the movie to see that she' s an OP character, no personality, no nothing. she was bland (should've picked a better actress or yet WRITTEN A BETTER SCRIPT) disney's so disappointing now i wanna cry
Because it was directed by a non asian person that had no knowledge about chinese culture and just did what she wanted which is one of the main reasons to as why this movie sucks
The intro of qi made her feel like “the chosen one” like the force in star wars. In the animated one, the chicken scene was set up to show how clever and creative Mulan is. That’s supposed to be the thing that sets her apart from others. And she trained to be skilled in fighting like everyone else. Her cleverness also helped her earn respect from others. I liked the message that showed a woman can work hard and become a warrior just like any man (w/o help from a special qi power) and offer a different perspective.
Yeah I honestly feel like the way the animated film was empowering was completely destroyed in this live action by her having magic qi powers since she was little.
No Chinese manuscript intro, no singing, no grandma, no cricket, no Mushu, and the most important: no hair cutting scene and 80s Mulan decision's montage. I wanted a back story on Shan Yu but we got Bori Khan instead.
Bori Khan basically shat on everything that made Shan Yu great and one of the more unique Disney Villains. Shan Yu didn't need magic to get into China or wipe out an army. He never treated his subjects like crap. Never abused his falcon and most of all he wasn't sexist and didn't diss Mulan he actually took her as a massive threat. Bori Khan had to rely on magic. He was also sexist by not treating Mulan as a proper threat and he treated the falcon witch like crap even though he would be nothing without her. Also the whole thing about Bori Khan wanting revenge on the emperor for his father's death goes absolutely nowhere because the plot never fully explains what exactly happened making it a massive waste. Instead the witch is the one who gets way more depth and development with her whole issue of getting treated like crap by others for being a woman and a witch and she takes an arrow for Mulan. I already disliked the concept of making Shan Yu's falcon into a witch because it takes away the concept that Shan Yu raised and trained the falcon like a real person that does falconry but geez Disney did ya have to make Bori Khan treat her like crap?
Tbh I found myself sympathizing with Bori Kan's allies (the tribes?) Because they mentioned losing land to China, which is a legit reason to fight a war
I can forgive the hair cutting scene. Cuz it's ancient china, men have long hair too and it's not like she even made it that short. But the rest I can't forgive.
I hated the witch part too. It wasn't feminist. The whole plot boiled down to: Yeah, men would have just accepted a girl with open arms. All she had to do was convince them she is strong and honest. Which is bullshit. First, because the witch was much stronger than Mulan and all she got was rejection. And second, because Mulan lied to them and somehow they just believed her. She wasn't honest. If strength and a few male friends could solve women's problems, feminism wouldn't even need to exist. The problem would have been solved long ago. The world never lacked strong women or a few understanding men.
@@chew7656 The original shows how unnatural patriarchy is. Mulan tries her best to fit in, but it is just too absurdly demanding for her to manage. Then, when she goes to the army, she is again trying to fit in as the other gender, and while it has its difficulties she manages it. Basically, patriarchy is so twisted that a woman could easier become a man than fit all its requirements. Second, she is not so easily forgiven, let alone accepted, after she is discovered. Patriarchy isn't broken just because of one moment. The friends she has bonded with have found a feminine part of themselves (they don't find it too humiliating to dress as women to enter the palace) and they are ready to follow her after she is proven right by the kidnapping of the emperor, but not everyone else is again. Third, there isn't a counter-Mulan, the "bad feminist who hates men" bullshit, in that one. Forth, everything Mulan achieves she achieves with dedication and hard work. She isn't magically stronger than the men. In fact, in the beginning, she is physically weaker. Almost gets thrown out. But then she proves that she has a different way of doing things, a way to think out of the box, that can make up for it. Physically, with lots of training she catches up with the others. Mentally, she can still have a fuller picture of the world (they as men are cut from everything feminine by the patriarchal society) and this now places her above them. In the new Mulan, physical strength is everything. A woman with superpowers just has more of it than the ordinary men.
@@skyskyight90 um excuse me "cult"?? Hope you're talking about the Ouïghours that are killed for BEING muslim instead of encouraging it. Cuz thinking that Islam is a cult is just being like the ones who torture them "out of it" in the camps.
Disney just can't help but make the Mulan story kinda gay, can they? They took out the Li Shang romance to avoid the implication that this guy had the hots for what he thought was another guy, but instead, they gave us the some sweet sapphic subtext. Wish it was in a better movie, but what can ya do.
Chinese won’t call people witches or wizards for having “chi” .. qi, they’d only think it’s a prodigy blessed with talents. It’s believed that these are prodigies and often will train with their masters or explore the world fighting evil whilst aging slowly - "wuxia" style. everyone has qi, but it is a matter of how you can cultivate it. It’s absurd to any Chinese person that one would be suppressed for such reason. The entire base of Mulan the movie is bull. Director and writer failed to understand the core of Chinese culture while claiming they do. What a waste of the good Mulan og movie, and a waste of what couldve potenitally been a good live action movie from disneys mulan
If they had gone even a little deeper into the Wuxia mileu, they would of come across the idea of there being orthodox schools of qi cultivation, and renegade schools, and whilst the orthodox schools are accepted and respected, the renegade schools are suspect and suppressed. It would have been easy, though a little cliche in Wuxia fiction, for people to suspect that her powers to be from a renegade teacher.
The director Nikki Caro have some interesting movies but mostly independent, with free spirit exchange with actors/actresses/personal and limited budget. Here she seems to be swallowed and couldn't handle the pressure of a multi miillion giant proyect version of a beloved movie classic, having to find a way to please the all world while making drastic changes to satisfy the chinese people. Too much to handle.
I recently cot into a heated discussion that some American translation of Mo Dao Zu Shi calls clans - sects. Like seriously. They even can’t translate family with proper word...
@M.H. But... They don't say anything about something being better than something? Where are you going to? It's not that deep and they're right about the cultivation part.
As a Chinese, this movie was trash, I'm not saying that the actors are trash, just the movie production and a bunch of other things *TRASH* EDIT: Liu YiFei (Mu Lan) was a good actor, but in this movie, she was too stiff and didn't show any emotions. She used to be so beautiful and has unique features, but her face in this movie is ruined. I don't know why.
5:33 I hate the idea of Mulan having a sister so much. The whole point of her putting her father's armor is her making the terrifying choice to go into war without consulting anyone, making a life-changing decision about not only herself, but her family as well. Having a sister takes away from the strain of her position, because she's not leaving her parents with no child to honor them, so she's mostly just risking herself.
Terrible work from the writers. In the cartoon her desicion was terryfying and required great courage. Not to mention how well that scene showed it to the audience. In the live action version it's not like that at all..
Old Mulan: doesn’t knows how to fight at first and has to work hard to be the greatest warrior that she is at the end and to bring honor to her family . New Mulan: Haha I’m born perfect and have no personality qi power or wathever .
i feel like the 2020 film had WAY less emotion and humor as the 1998 film and mushu is gone, shang is gone, the FRICKING grandma is gone, and xiu has NO personality except the fear of spiders. and the 'my butt's on fire meme' just got kicked in the face. and the pheonix was just a filler. yo ling and chein-po, was like the comedy relief, and their removal hurt. the witch felt off, and the redemtion ark was just shoved in the fan's faces.
Honestly I hate the new version of Mulan. The original legend shows Mulan as a feminine woman who only pretend to be a man in order to fight because it was the societal standard. The whole underlying message of the legend was that femininity is just as powerful as masculinity. And the 1998 stayed true to that message by having Mulan embracing her femininity. The new one not only cheapens that by giving her a culturally inaccurate superpower and setting a woman as the antagonist instead of portraying her as a normal woman who excels in a masculine space. It diverts from the actual message of the story and honestly, convoluted the plot.
Exactly! That’s why I loved the cartoon so much! Truth concept of feminism. While everyone else were pushing her to give up, she pushed herself to have the same rights as man has!
as a chinese-american, this movie was extremely disappointing, especially since it was supposed to be a way for my culture to be celebrated and appreciated. not only was the entire OG tale of mulan extremely butchered and inaccurate in the movie, but the whole thing with the qi felt so forced. also, the movie based it on the tang dynasty and not the song dynasty in the original tale, and mulan's dad defending her at the end wasn't historically accurate. i guess i'm not that surprised with the lack of effort put into this movie since they had an all-white production team, including the director, the writers, the costume designer, and the composer. it really upsets me that although this chinese tale is being told through asian actors, the same isn't being done behind the scenes. yes, we have an asian story, but a white person wrote that. yes, we have asian people in their cultural clothing, but a white person made that. in order to tell an asian story effectively, we need people from that same background to tell them. instead, all we get from this movie is white people attempting to tell a story meant for us. overall, a major letdown, super inaccurate, the actress supports the hong kong police brutality (despite literally playing a character who is a symbol of rebellion), disney literally filmed and thanked the xinjiang concentration camps, and the all-white production team just really pisses me off. as someone who grew up loving the animated mulan, it was so inspiring to see a disney princess who looked just like me and could be equally as feminine and badass. however, this movie did the total opposite. it really took away from the original message and it honestly wasn't that good. i'm really disappointed.
The all-white production team and filming locations are what pushes it for me too, as far as Disney goes. They may be able to say the actresses' views are out of their hands, but those two fall squarely on their shoulders.
As an asian-europeen, it doesn't bother me that white people write the scenario and make the costumes, if they do proper researches on the subject and respect the original material. Problem is that it's not the case here...
You have a problem with white people? Maybe China can remake it, I bet nobody will watch it although it would be historically accurate. But this Disney remake of mulan is just garbage, not because of the white producers, but because of the whole team
Ilarina Chow actually there has been a Chinese remake around 2010 already called Hua Mulan. Sticks more to the original, but it’s not Disney ya see? I think it got little recognition
I remember the advice I heard when it came to villains was that they typically reflect the hero. Your idea of the witch posing as Bori Khan would have been _such_ a welcome and the sole clever thing about this remake.
I will agree with you that the cinematography in this movie is stunning. That's what impressed me when I saw the trailer. I thought "OMG....are they ACTUALLY giving us a live action remake that is NOT vomited over with ugly CGI?" What I found MOST insulting about this movie is that they took EVERYTHING that was special and unique and inspirational about Mulan as a character....stripped all that away....and made her like every other emotionless, sugar-coated, boring as hell Disney Princess they have come out with in these Disney remakes. Its INSULTING to this Disney princess....WHO, btw, received her recognition as a Disney princess NOT by having a crown or marrying a prince, but by her own strength as a character....to just have THIS be put in place of that. They revised the whole criteria of what you had to do to BE a Disney Princess....JUST FOR MULAN. NOT because she had a pretty dress or a handsome prince...but because she was WORTHY of that recognition. I RESPECTED Mulan in the animated film. Yes, when we meet her, she's clumsy, she's lazy, she's late, she utterly FAILS to impress the matchmaker and then sasses off to her father....and even when she reaches the army camp, she still struggles to fit into her new identity. BUT....over time....she GETS BETTER. Shang tells her to go home and she tries again to reach the arrow and SUCCEEDS by using her intellect. She gets BETTER at the training....apparently, even becoming one of the best warriors. When they are on the mountain and her secret is discovered, she COULD have gone home....but she didn't. She finished the journey on her own. And we see her use these skills later (LIKE when she and her comrades need to save the Emperor and she uses the same trick to scale the pillars. AND when she uses the fan to disarm the bad guy. AND when she uses the cannon to kill the Hun army. So when she finally returns to her father with the Emperor's gifts, having her family honor restored....we FEEL that when he says his greatest honor is having Mulan as his daughter. THAT is what makes Mulan unique as a Disney Princess. Not magic. Not chi. No super special phoenixes that don't do anything.
Totally agree and some things I would add: - she was instantly offered a position as commander, demoting all men despite strict tradition that women should know their place and that men were superior. In the original she was offered as advisor which made more sense to start with as the generation starts to accept women as equal. It also shows how her wisdom was valued. - change of the dramatic scene where mulan shows her father the emperor’s necklace and shan yu’s sword. It was very symbolic because the father threw it and hugged mulan deeply showing he cares more for her daughter’s safety and not really about bringing honor. Despite mulan felt the pressure on how to bring honor, it greatly shows that family loves you regardless.
Disney rushed to the war and didn’t pay any attention to Mulan and her actual journey. She had no goal in the new movie and the story telling was really bad, it just had really bad pace over all. The new characters are unimportant and the new movie took out characters and scene concepts that were essential to the plot in order to keep it interesting, fun, and classic. Mulan should not have been a Mary Sue, the whole moral of the old story is about Mulan and her journey/growth, which Disney robbed from the entire story line in the new movie. This movie is a disgrace and they could have done a lot better, as I regretfully expected from Disney.
The thing that I hated the most was how they changed the relationship between her and her Dad. In the original, that relationship was established as very strong early on which is why Mulan was so overprotective of him and why she decided to go in his place. That beautiful scene after she screwed up with the matchmaker where he talks about the blossoms and makes her feel better is one of the best scenes because it establishes how much they love one another. Then again later in the film when she comes home and finds him in the same place waiting for her and she offers the gifts. And it never fails to make me sob buckets when he tosses them aside to hug her and reveal that “the greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter.” It’s such a beautiful callback and they completely ruined it in the remake. By removing the core of why Mulan decides to go to war in the first place, it makes her feel incredibly hollow as a character.
Dont' forget CCP has killed at least few hundred or thousands, (no known number released) of Hong Kongers. Including one known case of a girl who was gang raped by HongKong/CCP police and had to get an abortion. Some 10,000 - 30,000 Hong Kongers had been arrested and many murdered. Many underage girls were raped. Many sent to concentration camps. And the actress and the actor both support the HK police killing Hong Kongers.
@@IhateCCP :( it’s just really sad - and what’s worse is that we can’t do anything about it - esp since the world powers are staying pretty much silent too
Honestly I was skeptical the moment I heard that Disney casted Crystal Liu, because as a Chinese, I grew up watching her dramas, and my impression is that despite her being known for her beauty and ethereal/goddess-like looks, her acting did not seem to improve one tad bit in her entire career(she started acting she was 16 too, so it's been more then 10 years....). Now that I have seen the movie, I realized I was not wrong to worry, cause throughout the movie she had little to no expression and emotion, I could not see Mulan's determination at all through her blank stares. There were Chinese actresses like Lan Yingying that also auditioned for the role of Mulan, and if she had gotten the role, I feel like at least the character might be better represented and played, but of course Disney chose Crystal because she is prettier and more well-known. With the lack of authenticity in representation of Chinese culture along with the lack of logic, this movie could have benefited with keeping some humor elements from the original cartoon as it would be more entertaining, but the director of course decided to make it a serious movie while taking out Mushu, cricket, grandma, and even the songs...but why add a phoenix then? I swear that phoenix looks exactly like my childhood favorite kite when I lived in China ̄□ ̄|| Great actors like Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Gong Li's talents were also completely wasted, since their characters had little to no depth to have any room for them to showcase their acting skills or martial art skills (꒦_꒦)
Funny how that’s kind of how they have casted all the previous live action princesses. Lily James was perfect, Naomi was an awesome Jasmine no doubt about it but I did feel like she was a very safe option (as in conventionally pretty, half Indian because she can’t be too ethnic!! kind of choice). Elle fanning was so so bland as aurora (which I blame on an underwritten role and an already bland princess) and while I love Emma she was the absolute worst choice as belle she literally couldn’t sing and only got cast because she is the a prettier, more popular actress. At least it seems that Halle being Ariel is much more of a bold choice and got cast because of her singing abilities. But yeah these Disney remakes tend to cast bland but pretty enough girls that won’t be really that remarkable in the role so they don’t overshadow the original
Yeah I was initially surprised they cast her because she's not that good at acting, and they couldn't have pick a more feminine actress to play mulan. like how can she disguised as a man? But then I realize they cast her because she's probably the only actress that's already popular in china and can also speak english.
That phoenix looked like your kite lmao I'm dead!! I totally agree with your opinion! The actress felt quite bland to me as well. The animated Mulan was so expressive and relatable, I don't think the new actress did her character justice!
I think that "QI" was a mistake, it takes away the essence of the film, because the lesson that the film gives you is that even if you are a normal girl, the important thing is family and love and that sometimes you have to sacrifice for the good of those we love, even if it is something out of your reach, but if we add this concept of QI, now she becomes a super athletic girl without fear and all the challenges that her situation imposes on her would be useless and all the courage and honor that she wanted to show his father that she would win it without effort. Edit: It's just a personal opinion.
The animated Mulan was actually relatable. She wasn’t born knowing how to fight, she didn’t have powers, she was normal when she started. But in the live action, she’s an ultimate Mary Sue.
Ugh don't remind me about the scene where her father basically spells out that mulan ran away. The script was ACTUALLY cringy and was it just me but the music was so lacking as well. Like not even musical numbers, just plain background music in general, especially in the beginning. Like when mulan left there was no crashing musical soundtrack behind her, it felt like stuff was just happening onscreen with no emotional weight.
I just want to say, as a Chinese, I absolutely have no idea what “Chi” means in this movie... And I’ve always thought that lady was literally a witch or a Hawk who can transform into human shape (cuz normally this is how a supernatural thing grows in China: they are plants or animals at the beginning and spend hundreds of thousands of years to finally develop supernatural power and be able to look like human, rather than the other way around...). And of course I’m very confused why we have a witch here since obviously it doesn’t make sense. But then I read a review saying she’s actually a normal person who is a “Chi” master, and that she is so good at mastering the “Chi” that she can actually change into any shape she likes... 🙄 I’m like no dude, that’s not even slightly Chinese. None of my friends have ever heard of this crap. Then I realized this movie was never targeted at Chinese audience, which makes a bit sense (but only a bit since obviously audience from other parts of the world doesn’t buy it either lol). But I was really worried that people from other countries would actually think that crap is part of Chinese traditional culture. But I’m so glad to see most people are sensible and know that it’s just a show of how stupid Disney is. (But I still love Disney for all the animated movies, especially Mulan, my favorite since childhood. Pity they screwed it up this time...)
Wait if your in china and your using youtube does that mean you'll get arrested. Your breaking your own countries stupid law hmm 😐😐😐I'm sorry that I said stupid law. What I mean Your breaking the law are you not afraid.
Kavish Algoo Emm, first of all, I’m not currently in China but in Australia. Just in case you didn’t know, Chinese people or anyone from any country can be in any part of this world (I guess it’s probably a WOW for you lol). Secondly I wouldn’t say it’s against the law as long as we are not using vpn illegally. Plus if you know Liziqi, who has more than 12 million fans on UA-cam, you may be interested to know that she was actually praised by the Chinese official media publicly. Thirdly, my comment here is only about Mulan the 2020 movie. I really don’t think there’s a point for you to discuss anything related to vpn etc. It’s just meaningless. Still I respond out of politeness and explain my point to you. But this will be the end of discussion. Thank you.
Kavish Algoo you call an entire country stupid yet you can’t speak English correctly. Don’t make me laugh. VPN is very popular in china, even business buildings use it.
It’s unfair Disney did more research into Polynesian mythology for moana (not shitting on the thought put into moana and presenting their mythology and culture) and even researching the specific mythos for maui but didn’t for a very well known story from China. It seems like this was more Gertrude signaling and putting more effort into a marginalized group and another marginalized group. Like cherry picking which one they chose to sink more time into. If they want to do it right they should be putting the same amount of research and work into the story and culture behind Mulan like they did with moana. I was so excited to finally have a mainstream movie that represented my culture accurately and only to be let down
Kavish Algoo just so u know I’m Chinese and Vietnamese, but I live in America- so I’m Asian-American- and like if someone is Chinese it doesn’t mean they live in Asia lol
I facepalmed hard at that part. And she untied her hair too like why would you make yourself easy to grab and obstruct your vision before entering the battlefield???
Mind you, I haven't watched the movie itself, but the main actress looks so bland. All the scenes I've seen her in has her look like a solemn lone wolf swordie. I personally don't think they should've casted her for this role, but what do I know they probably don't care anymore as long as the main gal is pretty.
Her acting was pretty stiff at times, which paid off when she was supposed to look stiff (like when she was trying to hide her identity) but otherwise def not. I thought her acting should have been more like Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman.
haven't watch the movie either but i thought the same looking at the promo, i feel like the og mulan had a lot of emotions but she basically had one face every time i saw her
I mean she is a famous Chinese actress living in China with family in China. If you haven't noticed the CCP isn't too keen with freedom of speech so if the actress says anything against the Beijing government, she could lose her status or she or her family could get into more serious trouble with the government.
And they also removed the mushu because the Chinese didn't like it since in was received as a mocking figure and obviously American made in comparison with the ancient Chinese ones.

Basically, they made her into a Mary Sue character, stripping away what makes Mulan a likeable and relatable character, and just giving her unbeatable powers that made her essentially unstoppable.
many of you expressed concern over my not addressing the controversy revolving mulan’s lead actress as well as not discussing the concentration camps in xinjiang (which is where the movie was filmed unbeknownst to myself). as i’m not familiar with many of the details surrounding these issues i felt it was not my place to speak on them, especially as far more qualified people have discussed it and i would hate to speak over them. i’ll include links to some articles below, but also feel free to comment more of them so we can all continue to learn.

Cartoon dad seems so deep and loving and real
omg you're so right! what a wasted opportunity...
I AGREE SO WHOLEHEARTEDLY. These are my exact thoughts and its so frustrating.
Yooooo sameeee, the way that they made her just a regular girl with extraordinary determination to a girl who’s just an exception to the rule and ~special~ was kinda annoying. Old mulan challenged the status quo while this mulan was put above it by default
completely agree! they missed the point entirely
Yes! What was so empowering about Mulan is that DESPITE having all of the odds against her she works HARD and gets through challenges thrown at her!
even the original legend was about a fairly normal and (slightly above since she managed to defeat her own father in a fight) average woman.

For sure!

Tiana is the only black Disney princess.
the problem with qi in this film is that that's not how qi works in real life, it's not some sort of special power. every single person has qi in them, qi does not descriminate. it's used mainly in medicine and martial arts. qi is the same in everyone, it's how the person channels and uses their qi that makes them powerful, and the person should be praised for their techniques not the qi itself.
qi is an excuse to shoe horn the typical chinese wire team crap. Apparently gravity works different in china.
YES. it’s not a super hero movie
That scene where Mulan and the witch are standing across from one another on the rooftop would’ve been mind blowing if she had been fully evil because ( to me) these two women represent the two possible responses to the double standard oppressing women within this culture:
You could respond with bitterness and revenge ( like the witch, dressed in black all angry and ready to kill) or you could respond with hope, and strength like Mulan in her red flowing dress, ready to defend her home and her kingdom with honor.
ALSO YOU LITTERALLY HAVE TO PAY THIRTY FRICKEN DOLLARS TO WATCH THIS MOVIE ON DISNEY PLUS. AND IT WASNT EVEN THAT GOOD
Agree, it didn't deliver to me..
this is the "captain marvel effect". for a strong female character to exist, they think she has to be flawless and unstoppable. show characters messing up and learning from mistakes. its boring to watch characters do stuff perfectly
Mulan 1998 : a trained soldier who does things men can do
Mulan 2020 : a gifted Wonder Woman wins all the way for no reason
The art of kungfu is gifted not everyone can do it and is not easy, just like that Mulan was gifted with it and also she did train since a young age with her father's sword.
No she trained hard and had to hide this... way more realistic than in the animated one where she was just good all of a sudden
@Your Mom fr, what are these people talking about? The new one made no sense.
When Mulan ran away to join the army in place of her father,
Cartoon: no! My daughter! She’s gone! She could die!
New movie: ugh! Here she goes again! I’m so pissed
💀
When she’s back it is worse
He’s happy to see the gifts but in the animation he throws it aside, not caring about them becuase his kid is more important

@@finland4ever55 sorry auto correct
@@miaferrari958 terrible trait to have and give to a main character if you ask me lol
The only time she showed true emotion was when she got excited and when she shook hands with her love interest
original mulan earned her strength by working hard and doing her best. this mulan was just given power bc magic. original mulan inspired young children to believe that it doesnt matter how you were born, your choices and hard work will get you where you want to go as long as you keep at it and dont give up. the new mulan says that unless you are born with some kind of power you dont really matter
So true!! I dozed off and also I forgot which part of the movie I dozed of to LOL
Ignoring my dislike of how un-disney this film is,
I hate the new powers Mulan has.
I have a small hope for princess and the frog, they can't mess that up.

😭😂😂😂
Exactly! Chi/Qi isn't even a superpower in Chinese culture. It's literally another part of your body. So making Chi such a big deal in this movie is like saying to someone "Oh, you can breathe! What an epic superpower that nobody else has!"
@@nataliamidzio well, it's kinda what happened in jjba first part

Part of the thing with qi too is the fact that in the animated film Mulan’s strength was her intelligence. She didn’t climb the pole using brute force, she “cheated” it by realizing she could use the weights to work for her. She didn’t charge recklessly into battle, she used her brain and aimed at the mountain to cause an avalanche. Basically there are different kinds of strengths
Didn't she do the same - showing intelligence when she tricked the enemy army into thinking there were reinforcements coming from behind and had them shoot themselves to defeat by hitting the ice/snow?

Agree, because the real strength comes without effort..
I always assumed the pole test was intended to be "cheated" that way.

I see where they wete going for. They didnt want mushu because he was a conedic character and this isnt a comedy. However, i think they could have introduced singing and more interesting characters while maintaining the same theme
Mushu wasn´t removed bc it isn´t real, but bc of how offensive is the way Disney managed that character like comedy to chinese people
Its also pretty obvious that they didn't want a black guy voicing a comedic dragon.
Actually, a phoenix and the witch is part of Chinese culture.
I was disappointed. The supporting characters were bland and had no personalities and that disappointed me. i only watched Aladdin for the lovable soundtrack and you’re telling me i can’t even enjoy some of my favorite disney songs with this one? what’s the point then? why does this piece of crap exist?
Brutal, but may actually be closer to fact. lol
@D Lu Yeah but for what it seems they didn't have a scene saying "we both must carry the burden, please don't mess up"
As an ethnic Chinese daughter, I’d say your explanation is bullshit.
Yeah. That's why it is okay for Mulan to be a spinster
YES!!! I also do not like it when they try to make it seem like she can't be married if she is for empowering women. That is a bunch of CRAP!
Cinderella was good and her personality wasn't that far off from the animated movie, I think that and Maleficent are the only good live-actions
yes!! and also teaching young girls that girlyness=weakness is really harmful
That’s why I prefer flawed characters like Korra and Captain Marvel. Characters like Wonder Woman are too perfect and flawless for my taste. Shame they made Mulan into a Wonder Woman.
Lindsey Ellis has a great video about Disney girl bosses and what a mistake they are
I hated the witch element all together.
Apparently witches like that didn’t even exist in Chinese lore and they wouldn’t have been outcasts for being witches.

"we're making a realistic movie on Chinese culture"
also disney: includes a shape-shifting witch who can turn into an Eagle and mulan having superpowers
"I mean we wanted to make money k"
Nowadays I really hate it when people use the word "realistic" to describe a movie or something. There is nothing realistic about the way Mulan is set up in this film, or in how any of the characters really develop. Things happen for the sake of happening and I hate it.
btw uhhhh watch treasure planet, genuinely has some of the most realistic interactions I've ever seen
I’m fine with the hair scene, since nobody cut their hair. Otherwise, they did a lot of odd stuff.
Hayeon yess treasure planet is so underrated
I didn't mind taking the hair cutting scene out because regardless of gender cutting hair back then would be considered extremely disgraceful and would mark her as a convict so it would basically blow her cover... like instantly
Everyone who worked on the film was white lol so apparently they got a bunch of things wrong (phoenix don't rise from the ashes in Chinese lore, witches aren't really a thing, the makeup was off).

Well said👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It is about a girl who grows up to be a strong woman, who does not care about what society wants or expects from her and how strong she is at the end.
That's exactly why she's my favorite Disney princess alongside Tiana
Good. I'm glad.

Which proves old Disney actually did care about their characters back then, whereas now they're just trying to make a quick buck and ruining all kinds of things
just watch it secretly and then say you didn't watch it
Thank you for pointing out Shan Yu's acknowledgement 😲 I never thought about that but it makes me have even more respect for the original!

**No MUSHU** Sassy, funny dragon played by black guy isn't culturally sensitive
**No Cricket, No Grandma, No Singing** We want this movie to have a more gritty and realistic tone.
Also Disney:
Let's turn Mulan completely boring and remove any of the character development she had in the original.

"We should be teaching children there's nothing wrong with being girly."

Only boys are allowed to be girly.
Only girls are allowed to be masculine.

Brian McHaney I don’t understand where you were going with this comment
@@noriii According to Feminism, ideas of masculinity and femininity are social constructs forced upon men and women by the patriarchy in order to keep women down. Therefore, in order to achieve equality, men must be reconditioned to be more feminine and women must be reconditioned to be more masculine. Then, the genders are just one blob and anyone can choose to be anything! ... except people who choose traditional gender roles. They cannot be what they want, because what they want is oppressive.
Brian McHaney this comment never mentioned feminism. It’s clear you wanted to have an internet fight with someone

As a woman who's gone through military training, this message needs to be given to every girl on the planet.
Interesting fact
She was also part of hun Turks (Teoman (Toman) yet nobody cares about that
@@havuclukek7563 May I ask in what version? I have only studied the earliest folk ballads and tales.
It also sucks they made her from southern China just because the aesthetic looks cool
My mom told me this when we watched the new Mulan:
She said that she came from a small, poor village. As a kid/teen she HAD to bring many buckets of water up from the bottom of a hill to the top. Sure it wasn’t a mountain, but the hill was steep and the mountain and this path way.
So yeah I just wanted to say that to show how bad they made the I lll make a man out of you scenes.
Two things I really admire about this review:
1) Your thoughtful ways of using the new elements in more organic ways (the phoenix, qi in men vs women, The Witch as a foil to Mulan).
@@MissLaraAshcroft Exactly ! 🙄 That's so annoying...
Sorry, but that's based on the actual story. Would you expect a funny, quirky, clumsy girl in a camp full of men? Of course, Disney only adapted that because it's still a children's show.
@@susanalopez5052 Merida? or Aurora?
laeno wouldn’t call Merida a Mary Sue as the whole film Revolves about her trying to own up to her fuck ups and she gets overpowered by her mother, the bear, her society, the men.

I wanted a back story on Shan Yu but we got Bori Khan instead.
AGREED!!!!!!!!
More like BORING khan
Exactly
This really just reinforces the fact that the original mulan is such a masterpiece
I'm honestly curious. What do you think made the original disney Mulan more feminist than the remake? Can you elaborate on that?
@@chew7656
The original shows how unnatural patriarchy is.

Question : Did they get rid of the epic montage music too?
And I also hated that they replaced the Grandma cuz in Asian culture it’s not just the nuclear family
It also takes away the pressure of sticking with tradition since the grandma represents the generation beyond her parents
Old Mulan: doesn’t knows how to fight at first and has to work hard to be the greatest warrior that she is at the end and to bring honor to her family .

Me: soo...how is it a remake exactly?
as a chinese-american, this movie was extremely disappointing, especially since it was supposed to be a way for my culture to be celebrated and appreciated. not only was the entire OG tale of mulan extremely butchered and inaccurate in the movie, but the whole thing with the qi felt so forced. also, the movie based it on the tang dynasty and not the song dynasty in the original tale, and mulan's dad defending her at the end wasn't historically accurate. i guess i'm not that surprised with the lack of effort put into this movie since they had an all-white production team, including the director, the writers, the costume designer, and the composer. it really upsets me that although this chinese tale is being told through asian actors, the same isn't being done behind the scenes. yes, we have an asian story, but a white person wrote that. yes, we have asian people in their cultural clothing, but a white person made that. in order to tell an asian story effectively, we need people from that same background to tell them. instead, all we get from this movie is white people attempting to tell a story meant for us.
overall, a major letdown, super inaccurate, the actress supports the hong kong police brutality (despite literally playing a character who is a symbol of rebellion), disney literally filmed and thanked the xinjiang concentration camps, and the all-white production team just really pisses me off. as someone who grew up loving the animated mulan, it was so inspiring to see a disney princess who looked just like me and could be equally as feminine and badass. however, this movie did the total opposite. it really took away from the original message and it honestly wasn't that good. i'm really disappointed.
The all-white production team and filming locations are what pushes it for me too, as far as Disney goes. They may be able to say the actresses' views are out of their hands, but those two fall squarely on their shoulders.
THIS!!!!! as someone who is fil-chi the way this whole movie just mocked and disrespected a lot of things is just so upsetting
THIS! THIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree and some things I would add:
- she was instantly offered a position as commander, demoting all men despite strict tradition that women should know their place and that men were superior.
By removing the core of why Mulan decides to go to war in the first place, it makes her feel incredibly hollow as a character.
they really had the inhumane audacity to film it in the same place uighurs are being imprisoned in concentration camps
AND they thanked the people in charge in the credits
Izza Khalid omg really? I haven’t watched the movie but that’s just bad...
Edit: I’m Muslim
Poor uighurs! CCP are criminals!

@@BituinA oh i haven't watched it yet. What is it about ? Thank you.

Agree, it feels like it's destroying the sequel of all that hardwork in the original animation.
Like when mulan left there was no crashing musical soundtrack behind her, it felt like stuff was just happening onscreen with no emotional weight.
uhg and the cringy way they kept winking at the original songs lyric's awkwardly in the middle of the conversation.
