In the new biopic WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story, there’s a scene where we see a clip of the “Eat It” video being played on a TV screen - except it’s actually a “deep fake,” with Al’s face replaced with Daniel Racliffe's (Dan, of course, plays Al in the movie). In order to create that particular scene, the producers had to track down source material that was considerably better quality than the existing standard-definition version. So Yankovic went into his personal video vault and had all the original 16mm film that was shot for the video in 1983 lovingly transferred to 4K. Then, while traveling the country on his 2022 tour, he painstakingly re-edited the video on his laptop, matching the original video frame for frame. The resulting video is not without scratches and artifacts (even in a temperature-controlled storage unit, film will start to degrade after a few decades) but it is exponentially better quality than any version that has ever existed before.

Random fact for the day - the photo falling off the wall at 1:10 was not supposed to happen, but everyone felt it fit the feel of the video and added to the humor, and so they didn't reshoot the scene.

I believe this was Al's first remake as this came out in the 80s. My buddies in the military loved this remake comedy version. Al is such a great artist when turning a song around. This video is by far the greatest.
Al's first hit parody was My Bologna in 1979. His first MTV video was Ricky, in 1983.
weird al once came to ft bragg for a signing event in the the late 2000s.
This was actually is 3rd music video. "Ricky" and "I Love Rocky Road" came out a year before this.

This was his first video remake I believe. His first song remake was My Bologna from My Sharona. He wrote it while getting his architectural Engineering degree in college. He lived in a dorm, had roommates, and they were all poor so wrote their names on the food they put in the refrigerator. So they didn't eat each other's food. Hence "that's my bologna".
For people who weren't alive back then to witness it and witness people's reactions, I'll try to explain. Michael Jackson was the most popular musician at the time. Thriller was the #1 album. I don't believe the video to Thriller had come out quite yet, they were still working on the Thriller video. The video to Beat It had come out and was on MTV constantly. Everybody loved it. White, Black, Asian, other, Hip Hop fans and Rock fans, almost everybody loved Michael Jackson Thriller. The Thriller album was on the radio constantly, rock stations, hip hop stations, other stations. The Beat It video was playing on MTV all the time. When this video, the Eat It video first came on, people didn't instantly realize it was a parody. Most people didn't know what a parody was. They assumed it was Michael Jackson Beat It. Some started to realize when the guy spit. They they started to think wait what? But many still didn't catch on right away. It took a lot of people 30 seconds or so into the video to catch on it wasn't Michael Jackson. But when they did catch on everybody was laughing.
Nobody had seen a parody like this before. Especially one that fooled them from the start and then continued to be so close to the original. Before this there were no parodies on MTV. Any parodies on TV were on comedy variety shows and were just silly imitations that didn't try to sound identical and announced they were parodies beforehand. On the radio there were shows like Dr. Demento that started in 1970 which had comedy songs and parodies, but it was only once a week late at night on only a few stations, so many people had never heard of them. People loved this video almost as much as they loved the original. People thought it was the funniest thing they had ever seen. Go watch mainstream comedy from the early 80s. This was one of the funniest things from that time. I can nly think of a couple other comedies from that era that I still consider funny.
It really helped he had the same stage, a lot of the same actors and dancers and Van Halen on guitar solo.
