  • As a child of the formerly communist Czech Republic, Jan Rezab has a unique appreciation for social media, which he works with everyday as the CEO of one of the world's leading social media analysis firms. In this insightful talk, Jan discusses what he believes social media is and isn't, and shares his vision for the future of this powerful tool.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

He said the most important thing, we need to use social media to change our mind to change our world, not just to upload selfies or pictures about what are we doing or how do we feel.

i remember memes and then the Gamestop reddit movement had an effect to the wallstreet stock market (not just americans i even saw europeans, asians, middle easterners had contributed to celebrities and symphathetic business owners) plus the individual user/DFV had testified to the supreme court truly is changing when we know how to responsibly use it. downsides of mass movements of social media is the same thing can also further radical causes (like the mass planning on the capitol in jan 6 that even caused 5 deaths) by just the treets, FB Groups and various forums. no political things just the recent stuff i experienced (one time in 2016 my native country's president used social media, fanatical supporters, internet bots and even celebs to push propaganda and support his dictatorial like policies and it hurts but at the same time journalists & citizens when met with tragedies and expose's mass anger recently put an off duty cop to jail for shooting in anger over a old woman & his son in front of his daughter) we had indeed power just there must be a balance to it.

I agree with him since he handles several important points such as that social networks are a means or tool whose end or purpose could be to change the world, make us listen and thus achieve a change with him, they are not just a means to spread photos, if not to try to make a change in the world and in us

I agree with him, i mean, now you can access to the news faster than with other stuff that is not social media, and you can have information rapidly, in seconds, but as you can use social media, it can be used for bad things, that is the truth, but we have the options and we have to decide what to do, and it would be good that all people or most people use social media only for good things, but it is not like that, unfortunately; what we can do is begin with ourselves using correctly the social media, as he said, thT the most important thing, is that we need to use it to change the world, not only to show and pressume our moments, we have to explode social media resources

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Social media is so powerful and we can truly use it to change the world for the better. And the way to spread this word is to BE the example. As simple as that :)

I do agree that social media is beyond its functions and acts as an amplifier that connects almost everyone to everything. Now everyone has their power on social media which makes every word on social media count otherwise there will be consequences. In the meantime, we get to receive information way much faster than we ever had.

People in today's era actually get information in the shortest and fastest time, so you don't have to buy a daily newspaper to understand what is happening in the world. Another thing Jan Rezab mentioned is that social media provides us with a platform for doing business. This can help you save a lot of money without having to pay monthly rent, electricity bills, etc.

Fast and easy is not always better. In the case of information it's bad because as we've gotten used to that we no longer try to have greater understanding, the headline is enough. Also, fast and easy is quickly and easily forgotten as well. The proof is in the pudding when you see how society has become. When i hear people trying to defend this obviously bad thing for culture and society it's like hearing an addict defend his drug. It may feel good but it's a net negative.

Social networking is definitely one of the biggest parts of the lives of each and every individual right now and this is why it cannot be ignored at all. One question that has been bothering a number of individuals for a long time is whether social media is good for society.
Like every other thing, even social media has certain positive as well as negative impacts on society. However, a number of sources say that the positive impacts of social media outweigh the negative impacts. This fact is important considering the number of people who engage into this type of communication.

I am going to x-post this Quote from my own recent English Essay about the Internet, both on pessimistic and optimistic videos about social media.
"The Internet and social media amplify all qualities, negative or positive. The Internet is widely an example of how “good becomes great, bad becomes worse.”"
"All social media platforms are double-edged swords. All double-edged swords have a dark side, but they also have a bright side."

the video we are told about some social networks and about the rules that we supposedly have to follow in these social networks, it also tells us how we can not express ourselves in a free way in these since we cannot talk about politics for example and I agree with this opinion
It also tells us about how before everyone went crazy about phones and the new technology that was coming out so that we can express ourselves
in mi opinion i agree with her and his opinions

But some people do not just use the social media power effectively.
Some use thei power to purposely destroy as well.
Now the debate is: How to control the social media power that everyone has ?
How to sensitize people on being truthful on social media power.
What i mean is: The individual is powerful in two ways: GOOD & BAD

This is a decent summary of the positive aspect of social media and freedom of speech. The problem however has never been with the concept. The problem is with the algorithms in the background that absorb users' brains like drugdealers. Freedom of speech and having the opportunity to raise your voice is awesome, but in reality we know now that social media giants are using psychological maniulation bigtime. So I agree the concept is great, but unfortunately the execution is deeply flawed. Same as with Airbnb: idea was to share your empty couch with those interested - great concept which turned almost immediately into a shadow hotel business - great concept with flawed execution.
