    For me, what really makes this musical personal is the music. This might sound weird but I am Irish and I play traditional Irish music. The music of Newfoundland is almost exactly the same and hearing that music - MY music - in a Broadway cast album, knowing it's played every day on a Broadway stage gives me _real emotions_

    • @MasterAsh
      @MasterAsh 7 років тому +5

      I agree, my family history is Irish, and the music sounded a lot like the stuff I hear at celtic festivals and stuff. It just made it that much more personal

    The one bit of this show that makes me cry every time is the part where the American guy communicates with the African guy through a bible verse. For some reason, that really got to me.

    I was lucky enough to get to see it in Toronto during the pre-Broadway tryouts. And by that I mean my mother absolutely insisted on getting tickets because some of the smaller planes were actually redirected to my hometown as well. And that "I need to do something" line hit so hard because that was exactly why we had offered to take stranded passengers into our home (they actually had more volunteers than they had people to accomodate). It also made me look at a few things in a new way because until I saw Come From Away I had never even thought about "Wait... why did they send the planes HERE and not to cities that had more facilities to accommodate that many people?"
    And of course being from that region it's amazing to hear *my music* on a Broadway cast album. And I just love the way the cast album is this mix of heartrending ballads and raucous drinking songs, often in the same number.

    I'm so glad you talked about "I can't watch the news anymore" because it's an incredible line and I have a lot of feelings about it. I was in kindergarten during 9/11 and I only have one vague, possibly made-up in retrospect memory of that day, so the fact that this musical made me cry with that line in the second song is amazing.
    There's something about that line that immediately cuts to the heart of the matter in a way that makes it easy to relate to. I haven't felt anything like the scale of this event, but I know the feeling of not being able to watch the news anymore.

      Feel ya on being 5 when it happened and not having much recollection (tho I know my mom managed to get me out of school and to my babysitter's house before they put the school on lockdown). But it's weird bc even tho I don't remember it well, I'm still a New Yorker and the daughter of two first responders (who thank god are still alive today), and I still feel a strong affect from that day because of that. So like I still feel a pretty strong connection with this musical due to that.

    I hate to say that when I first heard about this show, I couldn't believe there was a 9/11 musical, but I think it's much more than that. It looks like a well put together show that sounds very original. It won the Drama Desk awards, so it's a front runner.

    • @KaijaSchmauss

      Same. I honestly thought "this won't end well it's too soon" when I heard it was being made. I'm glad I was wrong.

      As the writers and actors like to put it, "it's not a 9/11 musical, it's a 9/12 musical about a small town with a huge heart that put their lives on hold to come to the aid of '7000 strays' with love and compassion and no hesitation. It's simply the nature of the people who live on 'The Rock'. A people who the rest of us Canadians love and admire for who they are.

    When I saw the show, basically any time Hannah was talking about her son, I was in tears. Not just like one artful tear arcing down the cheek, but full, honest sobbing. The song "I'm Here" gets me every single time. That subplot is just so well-done.

    Since you mentioned it, let me just say, hi from a member of the class of 2017! Yeah, I was born in 1999, 2 1/2 years old when 9/11 happened. I don't remember a single thing from it. It ended up just being a thing that people talked about, but I could never remember. It was always just... there. In history. Something I felt like I should maybe remember a little piece of. I'm gonna have to listen to this show, maybe so it can help me understand more of what that day was like.

      Congratulations on graduating. I'm from the class of 2015. I was four when 9/11 happened, and while I had several classmates growing up that remembered at lest parts of it, I don't. My parents later told me they intentionally made sure I did not hear about it at the time as they didn't think I was old enough to understand it, and wanted me to learn about all the good in the world before I learned about the bad.

      Class of '13, so I was 5 when it happened. I just remember standing outside my parents bedroom because they were both staring at the TV when we should be getting ready for the day, and then being worried about my cousins in Upstate NY because I didn't know the difference between NY state and NYC then.

      Yeah I was born in 2001 exactly 2 weeks before 9/11. It's such a weird thing to think about it bc it's so big and important and horrible and scary but it's still just out of reach almost? Not that it's something I want to feel a connection to or anything. But I don't know. I'm not making much sense

    As one of those 1999 kids now, with no memory of 9/11 happening, I agree with you about the impact and future of the show. Of course for me, the actual event didn't have much of an effect when it happened because I was two and didn't understand it. But it happened just days before my sister was born, and the show even takes place over her birthday, and it's just amazing for me to really be able to understand this huge and devastating event which I can't remember but that has shaped out world today so much, and to understand the effect. I was there for 9/11, and it's really interesting now to be able to see how it happening has changed so many things in the present (US border control, fear of terrorism, islamophobia, etc.), in a way which not many events in my lifetime have. I listened to it with my sister later, hearing about the days before she was born, and what was happening in the world as she was, and it was really impactful for us both, as neither remember it, but we were finally able to understand how it has changed the world we grew up in, and why exactly people react the way they do upon finding out she was born days after 9/11 while the event meant virtually nothing to us. It gave us a way to comprehend the tragedy and its affect, and even if it won't mean as much to future generations, it sure as hell means a lot to me now.

    Ok, I really enjoyed this entire show! I thought it was super personal to a lot of people. You can make connections with the characters. The Falsettos cast did a really good job of this as well. Each person took their role to heart and it didn't feel like acting.

    This is one of those shows that will probably always feel odd to me. I was 8, almost 9, on 9/11 so I was old enough to remember it but too young to fully grasp the weight of what happened at the time. My school didn't close and my parents waited until the usual time to pick me up, so the only sign I had that anything was off was my classmates leaving early, one by one. Mom sat me down when we got home and told me that "bad guys had crashed planes into buildings" but that I "shouldn't be afraid because it probably wouldn't happen here" because we lived in Minnesota.

    When I first listened to Me and the Sky, I interpreted her saying "somehow I'm 51" as her saying suddenly I'm a senior flight instructor and suddenly I've accomplished all of these achievements in my life and somehow I've done this all and I'm only 51 years old.
    Like when I think of a "senior" anything, I think of someone still a bit older than 51. I just took it as her saying somehow I've accomplished all this, and I've still got time to do so much more because I'm only 51.
    Idk, though, that was just how I thought of it.
    Love your analysis though!

    Agree with almost everything you said, Tommy. I *love* this show and I am unabashedly rooting for it for Best Musical and Jenn Colella for Best Actress. I'm not a fan of the entire song "Me and the Sky" because I don't think the direct-address narrative form works for what should be a big, showy, emotional number, but I am absolutely in love with "Heave Away" and "28 Hours." "Blankets and Bedding" steals the entire show. (plus it has Kendra Kassebaum redeeming herself after being dreadfully miscast as Glinda in Wicked, but I digress.)

      I music-directed the workshop at Goodspeed Musicals in January of 2013, which happened concurrently to the Sheridan workshop. The two casts skyped each other and attempted to sing "Welcome to the Rock" but there were some latency issues in the connection. I've since worked with Michael Rubinoff and a few actors from Sheridan, including Arinea Hermans and Joel Cumber, if you know them. Great program!

    I guess i'm the only one who absolutely hates this show, I think compared to the others musicals for best musical and every other musical ever made it has incredibly boring and bland music. I try not to compare it to hamilton even though it feels like Hamilton not as well written but the one comparison i have is that few measures in Hamilton songs where it builds up to its chorus. That is this shows entire soundtrack, where as dear evan Hansen has music that feels well written and complex. Come From Away sounds like the same two things played over and over again. Songs are called reprises even though the original song feels like a song you already heard. I found no songs in this memorable or listen again quality and I did at least find 5 songs which were ok. (they were still very lacking compared to the songs of other musicals nominated and most past musicals) but most songs feel pointless. I understand why people could like this show it has a ok story, I find myself wondering the entire time why i'm listening to a story about people who were affected simply in annoyances or confusion from 9/11 when i could be listening to a story about people or their family directly affected by the September 11 attacks and it really feels like were not able to address that subject so we have to adress around it with stories like this that in the end don't really matter. I mean yes these people are stuck on an island cant contat home and have to get to know each other and grow from it and thats an ok story. but id much rather the same story of panic and confusion but the reason for the panic and confusion is placed more closely to the actual event. I really cant stress enough how much i dont like Come from aways songs. It might have not ticked me off as much if i didnt know this show was nominated for one of the highest honors for the tony's and really doesn't deserve it. If your shows going to be a musical there has to be a reason for it being a musical and the songs have to be good. Come from away would've worked better as a play, and I dont understand how people can see past the boring music for the story aspect. Come from away is a musical because musicals do better and are more popular as plays and since they made that decision I dont care if they have the best most heart warming story ever. There a musical, They have no reason to be a musical, and The music is not anywhere as good as most musicals. I might give Come From Away a 6/10 just because it has a decent story and im sure decent set and actors but unlike DEH, TGC, and GD i never found msyelf enjoying there bland and boring cast album once.

      Canadian East Coast music is *very* Celtic. The music in Come From Away is very much in keeping with what's heard out there and particularly in Newfoundland. The musical philosophy is basically "When in doubt, add fiddle"

    • @taylorlockhart6618
      @taylorlockhart6618 7 років тому

      Thank you. I understand what your saying, I still dont enjoy come from away's music and if the music has to be just fiddle in the background which it doesn't but if it does then maybe your show should be a play and not a musical. Its a musical because plays dont do well on the theatre scene and thats fine i get that, but the music has to be better than what it is. I cant explain to you why CFA's music lacks but listen to The music man, guys and dolls, Disney Broadway Shows, Producers, and the other shows nominated for best musical and i think you may understand how much CFA's music lacks compared to other broadway shows.
