Hi Steve, 20 secondes of wildlife photography and 7 minutes of great teaching about what really matter in life. If I could hit twice or more the thumb up button I will.

As a teenager I "grew up" hiking and backpacking a particular stream side trail near my home. A few years later, I would hike this same trail with my young daughter and son. She would climb the rocks along the canyon and he would smell every flower that crossed his path ( I always thought it would have been the other way around ). Now, many years later, I am hiking/backpacking on this trail with my 3 grandchildren. Surprisingly, and fortunately, the trail has not changed much over the years. Hiking/backpacking, first with my children, and now, with my children's children makes me feel like I am, once again, that same teenager hiking happily on this "magical" trail . It doesn't get any better than this. Oh, my camera was, and is, always there with me/us.

as a beginner wildlife and nature photographer with two daughters, this hits home. Family first then passion. Just wanted to shout out and say you have been a huge inspiriation. Being a father is the ulitimate gift.

Couldn't agree more. My family always come before photography, although photography is certainly next on the list.

Hello Steve, you got to the heart of what is important in life. Not the cars, not all the consumption that you own, not Nikon or Sony, but the children or, like me, the grandchildren. Watching them grow up, their joy, their smiles - only that is really important in our very hectic, consumer-driven times. I fully understand you. Greetings Günter

Nicely said Steve. You're right - sometimes we focus a bit too hard on the finished product (light, composition etc..), but in reality, just being out there is what it's all about.

As a father of two girls and grandpa to two girls I have found nothing can ruin a photo shoot faster than a child. It will go from a perfect photo shoot, to a exceptionally FANTASTIC OUTING in about 10 seconds. That is if you think with your heart and not your camera. One of your best videos yet Steve. Thank you for reminding me of when my girls were young.

Steve I finally saw a pica or spelled another way and know know what they are. I have to tell you I don’t care what they are as I most enjoyed listening to you talk about your children, watching your son look for anything to point his iPad at and shoot. I spent the last 4 days with my daughter in Banff and I never once changed the lenses on my 2 camera bodies and never opened my bag for anything. My daughter is very busy as I am with photography as she is an equestrian with 2 horses one she just got July 1st. She is only 15 but is so good at what she does and I try to be with her at the barn a couple days a week while my wife does the other days. I saw myself in you after a special weekend with just the 2 of us no cameras or horses just father daughter time. What an interesting time to view this video. You are a special father Steve and I'm very happy to watch your videos and I'm sure we would be friends if we knew each other. Thanks for the video. By the way on our way out of the park we saw 2 Elk right at the entrance and managed to get out and from around 30 feet and I didn't move and had them come as close as about 7 or 8 feet. A 5 minute car ride we ran into about 40 or 50 Elk with their babies in a field I got a few more photos made. After spending time with my daughter I looked to the sky and thanked my mother for the social last 20 minutes of our trip.

This was a very touching video. I share the same for my son and grand daughter.
I also absolutely loved the pika photos at the end. I don't believe that the subject of a photo has to always, "pop". Seeing the pika in its natural habitat in the way I would see him face to face, has as much impact to me as one with a blue sky background. Thanks for this video.

@@SteveMattheis Yes sir I did! Steve, you have a very special gift in story telling.....!, this video reinforced fatherhood at its very best. As a father of a son and two daughters (all in their 20's now), it brought back all the wonderful memories we shared as a family, not only in the Tetons and Yellowstone, but every road trip we have taken to California in the west to Maine in the east and all points in between from our home in Texas. I grew up camping with my dad in the 60's and early 70's before he passed away camping on the coast of Texas to the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado and I wanted to make sure my kids enjoyed special memories with their dad just like you shared with you and your son. Thank You; keep the great videos coming and looking forward to someday personally meeting you on one of my trips and maybe getting a chance to learn some new skills in one of your photography classes!
