    Well done, man. Seriously, great job here. I've often thought about the length of games being problematic one way or another (who hasn't?), as in Half-Life 2 (not necessarily too short, I just wanted more; the episodes were nice but WHERE IS 3?!?!?! Sorry, off topic) vs Skyrim (I've still never gotten a character past level 50 and have beaten the game several times). You went in-depth, but instead of giving us an answer I was kinda expecting ("30 hours is good" or something), you left it open ended, while giving parameters by which we can judge games ("limited on content" vs "overstaying its welcome") outside of "too short" vs "too long," which I think allows for more thoughtful discussion.
    Excellent job on the quality of the video as well; lots of examples of games, clear speaking, nice music, occasional but fun visual edits... it looks very well done. You kept the video concise as well, which seems like it'd be hard; it's such a big topic after all. Keep it up; your content makes me think, without making the conclusion for me, which I enjoy.

    Tbh i never actually cared about the length of games nor have i checked how long the were before playing them, i always bought games that looked good/i knew they were good,even with your point in mind about as time goes on you get less and less time to play said games. The most important thing is to have a good time with the game, nevermind the length.

    dude, you deserve way more attention! You're videos are really well edited, funny and have really good structure! It's sad that trash channels are promoted in the algorithms as apposed to really good high production channels like yours!

    The too short argument is my biggest issue. It's funny because you showed my example: Bastion. It can't be compared to a movie of the same length as my playthrough (3hrs) because there's about 10 minutes of character development for everyone except the Kid, then there's the main story plus gameplay loop and then it's over. I don't give a shit about any of the characters, and I have barely any feel for their personality. The ambiguous motivations and the amount of wasted time reading that could be spent adding more meaningful living content (story through gameplay, cutscenes etc) really doesn't help either. This game was clearly not for me, but I also feel like it's too short and skimps out on an interesting story to do so.

    I like really long games, because once I start playing a good game, it’s the only thing I want to do. It’s almost like an addiction. I guess those titles are catering to people like me. Although I would prefer quality over quantity, if I couldn’t have both. But, if the game is just fun enough, I will play it for days, and it’s all I can think about at work.
    PS: really nice vid. Not too long or short. LOL

    I genuinely love short games. They dont overstay there welcome, i can always come back to replay it in one sitting and so much more.
    As example, im planning to replay chrono trigger since the beginning of 2018. Yet i never had the time. But games like the classic Mario and Sonic games is something i always have the time to come back to.
    Being too long is something why i prefer Odyssey over Botw. When im in the mood to play odyssey i can finish it in one sitting.
    TL;DR: Short games feel way more enjoyable for me because theyre actually completable for me and almost evert time have consistent quality with no filler

    I def agree that Persona 5, while amazing, does not when it's time to wrap it up. I was strapped for time playing it on a rented PS4 on weekends so the 4th or so time they intoduce a new villain *that was behind the previous villain all along* I was getting really frustrated and considered just watching the ending on UA-cam
    An older example is Serious Sam 2, I shudder at the thought of replaying all these dozens of levels

    Man while I agree with most everything you said, I think this video lacks a clear opposition to whom it seemed directed towards. Who ARE the crowd saying games are bad solely because they're too long and too short? (without using personal anecdotes)

    • @vinnysuperg123
      @vinnysuperg123  5 років тому +1

      WiredGuitars This video is more of a discussion rather then having a clear “villain” in it. I even say at the end, it’s preference of the players on what they choose. And if you want an example of people shitting on length, just look at any Walking Simulator video or the Order 1886 fiasco.

    Personally, I value games that can be beaten in 40-120 minutes, yet offer dozens of hours in replay value. A good example is Risk of Rain; that shit spanks your dick at first until you learn how to play it optimally (like many roguelikes), but DAMN once you get going it’s a banger, offering hours upon hours of entertainment.

    Personally I love longer games, but I always keep in mind why it's so long, Breath of the Wild for instance is my favourite game recently, and I put about 70 hours into it. But I absolutely cannot 100% it. My girlfriend spent 170 hours on it because she enjoyed getting every collectible and shrine, but that's where it loses its appeal to me, the seemingly endless grind for little reward. In contrast though I love roguelikes such as Dead Cells and Enter the gungeon for that sense of progress and seemingly endless replayability

    I'm new to your channel and think you're pretty good, but just in the three random videos I've seen you've said basically the same message: "that's just my opinion." We get it, you don't want people to get mad at your opinion but I'm not stupid. I watch your video because YOU are funny and interesting, not because you speak wise and factual game reviews or something. If you think a game is crap, say it, but don't waste as much time apologizing for your view. Anyways, that's just my take ;) keep it up.

      Aww well thank you! However I will say you would be surprised how many people don't understand the concept of "my opinion." I stand my everything I say in my videos, however I understand that a good chunk of what I say is subjective so I like to make that point clear. I might have to tone that down though in my newer videos if its becoming an issue. Either way thank you for the feedback!

    The way I look at game length for long RPGs are dependant on the characters, if the game makes me want to spend time with the characters then idc how long it is, it's like spending time with friends, I was close to 100 hrs for persona 4 and I still wanted more of that game when I finished it, as for a game like skyrim for its sorry Atleast it doesn't care about its characters so I appreciate how it's not 100 hours. Final fantasy games normally earn thier length with thier characters and not thier plots, the ones with shity characters are the most hated. The whitcher earns it's length with its characters but star ocean doesn't.
    Same goes for story in open world games, GTA games are great bc along other things u want to spend time with the characters where as just cause, no one bothers with the story bc there's no motivation. When it comes to length of games, engaging characters justify length and plots should stay short, no one needs a 50 hr goose chase to find who let the bugs out but if you get to spend time with big boss that's much more motivation so see mgs v to the end

    I do not understand the point of this video. You're just saying obvious things for seven minutes. This is the first time I even came across a concept that some people judge games on their length. I mean, I knew that this may be possible, idiots are everywhere, but it's not a sweeping problem for games industry that affects everything.
    Nothing bad with reasoning or the video itself, but it's just like.. a non-issue.

    • @WiredGuitars
      @WiredGuitars 5 років тому

      This basically

    • @vinnysuperg123
      @vinnysuperg123  5 років тому +7

      That Russian One thing that my video may have benefitted from was adding a clip from a review saying that and maybe some Reddit threads, however I didn’t because that is a legitimate criticism people get. I sort of talk about it in the video, but when the Order 1886 came out everyone was shitting on its length and no one was really talking about the quality of the game.
      And no offense man, but just because you don’t have that issue doesn’t mean other people don’t as well. This video was meant to be seen as a discussion from both sides of the argument. I talk about the points from shorter games and then I talk about the points from longer games. Then at the end I talk basically to developers, saying that this is an important thing to many people. That is because people do take length into account when buying a game, hell I do it. I have recommended games I love to people who have gone around and not bought it once they have seen it was short and literally while making this I had someone talk to me about how much they loathe long games.
      It is a real problem even if to you it may seem obvious, and I’m sorry if this comes off as abrasive.

      @@vinnysuperg123 i understand that its a problem for certain games that are actually good because their length make them look bad, but like, its not really a big issue.
