I LOVE this video so much! The reason I pulled the videos down was because they were embarrassing, and I didn't love the quality. I think about the mind series all the time, but I dont think I'll return. As for sourceruns, I created that community around the time I made Freeman's-ish Mind, and it always had my main attention, and has been for over 10 years now! I've thought a lot about making one more episode just to conclude the series for good, and I probably will go through with it when we get closer to the release of HLA. This video is a very sweet exit-stage for a very special time in our lives, but knowing that we inspired other creators means the world to us. ALSO SORRY CYH. I FUCKED UP DIDNT I.
So what you are saying is Ross Scott making a video where he plays half life and screams into a microphone pretending to be Gordon Freeman caused the marriage of two complete strangers?
Let's see.... Freeman's Mind started as an experiment for Ross to get videos out quicker than Civil Protection. In the span of over 10 years, the results yielded: - 87 Episodes spanning two (and a half including Uplink) games. - The birth of a devoted fanbase - The birth of a machinima sub-genre - A number of Mind-series based on other games - A small "coalition of weirdos" that united their respective Mind series into a universe. - A shit-ton of lines to quote out of context - A married couple from said coalition I call this a success.
Fun fact: I'm the reason there's a TV Tropes page for the Freeman's Mind spinoffs. I originally added the first trope entries for them as a separate section on the Freeman's Mind page, which someone eventually moved to their own page. Most of those first entries I wrote were for Shephard's Mind, because that's my favourite of the spinoffs. This was the only time I've ever edited TV Tropes.
Thank you very much sir for putting up those articles. TV tropes is one of my favorite sites and I've spent so many days at a time browsing it. It was particularly helpful for finding info on these various spin off series
Alex So funny thing, I ACTUALLY was going to include a bit where I talked about it, but scrapped it in the end. I asked Robin his thoughts on it in the interview and he didn’t have much to say past “That’s a funny coincidence.”
When you see videos like this, you expect at least one person to be like a murderer or something and for someone to be worse off. But nope. I guess they were mindful of others.
How the hell have I only just seen this?! But in all seriousness, Freeman's Mind and the Master Minds never stopped inspiring people, myself included. And what struck me as incredible is how dedicated this community could be. Speaking from personal experience, without my subscribers coming back time and time again with the start of each new season, Courier's Mind: Rise of New Vegas would have died a long time ago. I started that project in 2011 as a way to prove that I can actually maintain something, but now I'm continuing on for the viewers. Remember: Mind Series as a concept never went away and people never stopped making them. We're still here, and we'll keep going
@@Shushkin "Portal 2 takes place an indeterminate amount of time, somewhere between 50 and 50,000 years, after the events of Portal, which saw Chell destroying the sentient computer GLaDOS, and landing outside the facility, only to be dragged back inside of Aperture Science where she was ultimately placed in a Relaxation Chamber" Portal 2 wiki. Having the whole facility overrun by nature makes me think 50 years is a bit too short of a timeframe.
IAN AND CYH ARE MARRIED?! Shit, I still remember when they were both active, plus all of the Minds podcasts. Hell, I’m still subbed to Robin, Ian, and Cyh even though there’s nothing coming out just because I still occasionally go back to rewatch their stuff, but I digress. I found out about Opposites Attack a year or two after it got abandoned and didn’t know much about what was going on BTS, but now… Shit, man. Ian, Cyh, I don’t know if you’ll ever see this, but belated congrats to the both of you. I’m so happy for you both and hope things are still going well.
Oh bro... you used Parker's Mind for "some that are truly fantastic series even today..." I appreciate that. Thought I'd leave that here. Now, to finish the video. Edit: Wait this is two years old? How am I only seeing this now? WTF UA-cam Algorithm?
It's truly sad to see it all crumble away with so many minds petering out and so many going unlisted. It's my damn childhood and it hurts to see it fade away. At least Ross Scott stays true with Freeman's mind, but if he ever does finish HL2, Ep1, and Ep2, I think my life will be measurably more hollow when there's no more freemans mind to look forward to. I've been watching Freeman's Mind since episode 4 or 5 and one of the biggest constants in my life is that it's always there, ready to rewatch and potentially ready for a new episode every now and then.
It's so strange to think about the fact that I was a teenager when these series started and now I'm 25 and still enjoying the heck out of this kind of content. I think giving character to silent protagonists is just a timeless concept that will always have potential. I've also got a new appreciation for the genre as an adult since I know now how much time and effort goes into each of those series. I'm happy to hear everyone's still out there and doing great after all these years.
I feel as if "Civil Protection" by Ross Scott is just a mind series but from a thirdperson perspective. It's strange to explain it, but it's nice to know that there's almost a perspective of nearly every influential character, excepting certain enemies and of course GMan.
This is the most niche video I've ever watched. Is good though, these people (especially Ross and Robin) are an inspiration to me and entire generation of machinima nerds.
Learning about these mind series years later and becoming obsessed with them is so difficult because so much had been lost 😭 I truly hope some day they unprivate/make public all the videos again I enjoy this media so much
Ian's wrong, I'm greatly ashamed of what I made. Felix's Mind was the My Immortal of Mind Series', unoriginal, unfunny, pretentious and overedited. He's on the right track, though. If some police service I've applied for is doing a background check on me, I'm accountable for pretty much whatever comes up if a Google search is done on me, and since remnants of Felix's Mind are still littered in pieces and mentions over the internet, I have the awkward job of explaining that it was this thing I did when I was a teenager. On that note, I've long since accepted the fact that whatever gets posted on the internet is essentially up there forever, so I'm aware that someone has downloaded my videos and reuploaded them for posterity. I haven't and would not go running to UA-cam to have them removed or anything like that, but I do appreciate the discretion that you and the uploader of that playlist have taken in respect to my wishes. This is a pretty great retrospective, though, and as ashamed as I am for my personal products of the time, I wouldn't go back in time and undo all that. The friends I've made during that little period of minuscule UA-cam "fame" more than outweighs the cringe of making a shitty Half-Life fanfic off a stolen idea.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Honestly I completely understand wanting to hide that stuff because its one of the first things that would come up when searching your name. I will say, having rewatched the series in preparation of this video, the series has DEFINITELY aged. However I don't personally see that as a bad thing. There's a lot of fun and great ideas in there, that if given enough time and practice, could have turned into something truly incredible. But I know thats just me. I'm the type of person who absolutely loves looking back at their old stuff and seeing how I've grown. Either way, Im REALLY glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the clarity here!
I enjoyed the series but damn I can feel your pain on that.. I had some atrocious Half Life content I produced from 2013-2015 that still has some copies of it on the internet and pray to God it’ll someday just die out.
Maybe the fact that people enjoyed your work, despite your own reasons for disliking it, is enough to be okay with the fact it's still around? I'd say that's the most important thing above all, even if it's awkward to look back on, or to have others find. You get to at least say some people enjoyed what came out of your cringey teenage years. Not a lot get to say that. :P
I was just as passionate for this community as you were during my formative years, and I was lucky enough to be welcomed onto an episode of Mind the Gap after making a couple of silly remixes of the Mind Series. I had to act a lot older than I really was just to get them to think I was cool, lol, but inside I was kinda freaking out the whole time that episode was being recorded, especially when Ray Koefoed joined the call. It was an absolute privilege to shoot the shit with them, as I was a huge fan of all their series :) I was set to make my own Ellis' Mind, using L4D2, but I realized quickly that didn't have the hardware nor the talent it took to do that well enough. I used to download every episode of every Mind Series and stitch them together as part of one continuous video. When that became too much for my poor computer to render though, I switched to just doing that idea with the audio for each series. As a kid I'd seriously sit with my old iPod and listen to episodes of Freeman, Barney, Shephard, Felix, Chell, Freeman's-ish, Parker, & Chell's Mind. And yes, I still have all of those files, so technically, I have the lost episodes of Freeman's-ish Mind you are looking for, and I'm even listening to it right now. Lol @ Jared's Ross Scott impression. He knows I have these files. It probably keeps him up at night. Don't worry, Jared. I won't post them :) Just like the dilemma you face with linking those reuploads of Felix's Mind, Vinny, I can't in good faith reupload them if these creators whom I respect do not want me to. The Mind Series community and those times and interactions will forever be very special to me. This was such a good documentary. It's really nice to see someone else show their appreciation for this niche piece of internet history. I'm sad it took me 3 years to find this video! Great job with it.
So In the Mind Universe, Barney and Chell Stumbled upon each other and Worked together to Fight the Combine. Then got into a Relationship. This is actually wholesome seeing 2 Creators of Mind series got together.
Man was this a throwback for me. Freeman's Mind has always been (and still is) a big part of my life since my early teens, and Barney's, Shephard's and Chell's (which unfortunately ended just as I discovered it) were all big for me at the time. Almost genuinely considered making my own Mind series, but a lack of confidence, not having a game I wanted to cover and not wanting to put out something kind of lame (which it would have been for me at that age, as my sense of humor was a little lacking on the output end) meant I didn't. Glad for that now, but i'll always be grateful to be a part this community and the creativity it brings. You guys are great. Don't ever forget that. :D
I periodically come back to this video, its so good. And they're all such a massive inspiration, not just to me but others too. It's definitely an amazing piece of internet history, I can't even properly describe, it's just such a cozy great thing.
been watching the minds series since i was a kid and hearing that the blue shift guy MARRIED the portal girl is crazyyyyy, cant believe I'm just watching this video
I've been doing Jack's Mind since I was 14 years old (which is why episode 2 is so bad lol) and its been such a bit part of my small channel. Freeman's Mind and all the others were such a big inspiration to not only my own series but also my channel as a whole.
Thank you so much for creating this video. This actually gives the Mind Series community more representation now. Hopefully we can bring the Mind Series some more life with The Muddled Minds being a thing now. Anyway, nice editing and comedy. I laughed a couple times. I first found Mind Series in 2015, so this callback to creators I've been watching since I was 8 was really cool. I even had a couple fanboy moments.
When are we going to get Mitchell's Mind? You know, for the critically acclaimed Hunt Down the Freeman? Jokes aside, that series would be a comedic gold mine...
Man, this shit takes me back. I remember 2010 - 2013, when I started becoming a UA-cam-aholic, these series were one of my favorites to watch. There's a similar group who did Smash Bros. Machinima called Virtual Smash, and a lot of their content was anime influenced. I want to make content myself someday. I've been inspired by so many people. Monty Oum, Kitty0706, TeamFourStar, Eddsworld, Vinesauce, SomeCallMeJohnny, Rooster Teeth (of course), The Minds, and so on. Seeing videos like this make my passion ignite. One day I'll make a name for myself. And inspire others like those before me.
Oh hey, that's my series making a tiny cameo at 43:49! I'm very, very late to the party on this, but Nimrod House was an experimental endeavor. It took me entirely too long to finish--long enough that I uploaded what I had finished of "Nimrod House 2 Episode 1" five years after I'd initially started it (Started 2012, released 2017). I had changed mics and didn't want to redo the voiceover. Then I finished the series properly in 2020 as tit for tat since someone editing a video for me at the time was a big fan of the series. In that time, Nightmare House 2 had gotten an overhaul, so the first two episodes stick out like a sore thumb. I'm not hugely proud of my attempt to throw my hat in the "Mind" ring, especially since I was rushing to finish off the series in time for Halloween that year, but it's part of my legacy and I'm happy to have been an honorary part of the "Mind" team, as it were. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? Hell, at this point, you could say my new series is paying its respects to Ross's Game Dungeon. Some things never change. But that's just how influential Ross has been. He may not have created the "Mind" format, but he did codify it. Great video.
I was 9 years old when I first watched Freeman's Mind, hell. I'd even say it's what got me into Half Life as a whole. Ross Scott and the people you included in this video made my child hood.
Freeman's mind was something I watched so much of as a kid that a breezed through half life 1 the first time I played it, even though I hadn't watched the series in like 7-8 years.
I like PSTL's "what if chell talked in portal" vids, it may not be "chell's mind" exactly, but its a very good alternative that actually finished both portal 1 and 2.
GOD i remember when i was a kid and episode 13 of freemans mind was the last uploaded at the time on machinama and here we are with ross and a 2nd season in half life 2....im a adult now and hes just now in the water hazard chapter XD and i still remember people debating if ross was gonna finish half life 2 or half life 3 coming out but now we know the truth as of 2017 and the design documents....im glad ross and the others did what they did to create something special thank you all so much and thank you vinny for this fantastic video
I like how this video made me think about how everything has an end. I'm sure that when these series's were just coming out, they must've all seemed immortal. Yet they ended, and not many of them continued their internet presence like Ross did. That makes me realize that we're all gonna 80 one day, sitting somewhere probably dying, and we're gonna be thinking of how we were once messing around on the internet.
And to think that none of this would have ever happened if it wasn't for the greatest one of all - Ross fuckin Scott! I follow the dude to this day, and even though he infuriates me with all of his delays... I just cant stop loving the dude!
such a nice trip down memory lane! i still remember the day my brother showed me freeman's mind and we would stay up all night rewatching it in anticipation of ross' newest entry! almost 15 years later and a new FM episode STILL makes me drop everything! seeing an entire community formed around such a simple idea is infinitely inspiring! great work on the video!
I never knew how big this community got. Wow. I never was around for its glory days, but goddamn it's like the Flash explosion, but for a subgenre of Machinimas
I remember coming home after school and hopping on my computer to check the newest episodes and seeing this finally gave us, or at least me, the closure we needed
I wonder how many other communities like this existed on the internet and more eventually forgotten this kind of reminds me the story of like a kingdom or something
If ya'll are wondering, the theme music for the intro is the intro for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Fantastic video, Vinny! Edit: And thank you to all the mind series for making such incredible, loved content!
DUDE, YOUR PLAYLIST WAS A GODSEND. I probably should credit it in the description, it helped so much with the creation of this. You obviously have a large passion for this community as well, and it is greatly appreciated.
@@vinnysuperg123 Thank you! Also, I see you used the pilot version of Taggart's Journey at the beginning and end (At the very top right, you can barely see it)
Out of all the content I make, I think Sohn's Mind is my favorite. It's really enjoyable to write scripts for and even more enjoyable to actually get in and bring those written lines to life. I really appreciate all the different mind series creators like Ross and the Master Minds for inspiring me to join this community.
Honestly, the mind series I have the most fond memories of following its progress and watching over and over again that didn't even get a mention in this video is probably the rendition of Chell's mind by the youtuber Rychotech, known then as DDB86Legacy, in which Chell has a male voice most of the time apparently from a vocal cord transplant gone wrong or something and is a former Black mesa employee who is mentally ill and is at Aperture because she I guess was too much for Black mesa to handle. And now Rychotech is progressing very slowly on his own rendition of Freeman's mind in Black Mesa which I really enjoy almost as much as Ross's Freeman's mind.
I always loved the Mind community. Their videos entertained me for years, brought joy to myself and others. There hard work and effort was always appreciated. There is one last thing id love to know or learn from them. Is how would go about making a mind series. What does to do, the effrort, the tips and tricks. In a way I guess do they have any advice they would be willing to give to the people who want to follow in their footsteps. But the most important part of the comment that I want to make is, thank you all for everything. You all, and I mean it, you all Rock.
Man, so many memories when it comes to mind series: they really bring me back. One mind series I found was called "Sohn's Mind." It was for the mod Residue Life and was the last, and latest, mind series that I can recall watching. It was alright: on a technical and editing level it was awesome, but the creator could work more on his jokes and lines. Whenever I watch a mind series, I feel like a teen again and it just brings me back to a different time in my life. I can say without a doubt, it was one hell of a community. When I was younger, I always wanted to make a mind series. I lacked the talent and knowledge into creating something like that, so I never did it (thank the gods). Although, I am SO GLAD that I didn't make one in my youth, from time to time, I sit back and think about the idea I came up with all those years ago. I sometimes wonder how it could have been. But hey, maybe in another universe I made one. GREAT VIDEO!
I had a great time with a lot of the Mind spinoffs, but Shephard's Mind was easily my favorite, no offense to Cyh, Ian, Corky, or the others, but I just found Shepard's Mind to be the closest in quality to Freeman's Mind (Although I will say that remix episode of Felix's Mind was pretty damn hilarious, especially the beginning when Felix starts freaking the hell out when he realizes he's been buried under rubble and asks if D0G is some sort of hell hound when he digs him out X) ). I just think Robin's voice complimented the character he created for Shepard quite well and I just all around found his various quips to be a lot of fun. It really is a shame that Opposing Force 2 never saw the light of day, because I would've loved to have seen more adventures from his Adrian Shepard. Well, I definitely really hope that at some point during Freeman's Mind 2, Shepard makes another cameo appearance like he did in episode 61.
I love seeing these remnants of the old half life youtube community. The mind series and reviews by people like goosegoose are extremely nostalgic and also at times age quite well and still serve as great entertainment
This was an amazing video and brought back many happy memories ^_^ Like you said, it was a golden age of content, a lot of great machinima was made at that time. Also, it was very considerate of you to respect Corky’s wishes with his videos, very professional. I was extremely lucky to have been given the chance to interview each member of the mind community, including Ross. Both Simon and Jared were even kind enough to let me have tiny roles in their shows. I wish I interviewed the creator of Kane’s, but for the life of me I can’t remember why we never got around to it. But that aside, I’ll always be thankful for the chance they gave a small little channel like mine at the time. It’s videos like this that really want me to get back into content creating.
I love Freemans Mind because Ross's depiction of who Freeman could be really made sense to me and I loved the series dialogue and character interaction. Don't think Freemans Mind 2 is that much better but I am just happy Ross is moving forward with the series. As for the other minds, Adrian's mind had to be my favorite besides Freemans Mind.
Actually, On second thought, what I really want is an "Into The Spider-Verse" crossover things will all the Gordons. The "Canon" Gordon, He'd never speak, He's self explanatory really. He'd be whatever you wanted him to be, Which is why Marc Laidlaw wanted him to be silent. Freeman's Mind Gordon: Copy+Paste of Canon, except He's slowly going insane. Well, not slowly. Gorgeous Freeman: He'd be doing cartoony early 200's GMod vids shit like flying across the room as a ragdoll and sliding on the floor really fast and making dumb faces. He sounds like Duke Nukem, oh, and also he's big and sexy. Make Your Time: He'd be fast, I guess? I haven't actually watched that one. somehow. HLVRAI: Since he's forced to bring the AI characters with him, He's probably losing sanity points by the seconds. Into The Freeman-Verse. Then put them all in GMod and they can do some funny shit or something.
Actually...On second (or I guess Third?) thought, Antoine has been VERY public that he wants nothing to do with Gorgeous Freeman anymore and only he has access to the model and he isn't gonna publish it anytime soon. Also this is a really bad idea. That sucks I guess.
Great video. So many cool things came out of that simple idea of "What is this character thinking during all this?" and I will always enjoy Freeman's Mind and it's spinoffs..... That said at about 3:00 I see something I tried to make at that time. Mind of Isaac Episode 1 from TheBurningSaints. I am honestly surprised something I made so long ago still shows up in any kinda of youtube search. Glad I came across this video.
If anyone out there wants to make a mind series, just a tip: record the audio before you record the game. This method is probably best if you're doing a script, but you can also record it in real time and make jokes up on the spot, but thats a bit harder. I didn't do any of these things so my video kinda stinks.
Loved the video. Provided some nice closure that I didn't really know I needed. All the Mind series I used to watch was such a huge part of my life at one point, and while a lot ended in satisfactory ways a lot just stopped, and their creators just faded out. I don't blame anyone nor do I feel any resentment, bitterness, or entitlement, but it did leave a hole left in my heart and I always did wonder where everyone went and if they were okay or doing something new I could get in on. I'm so happy for everyone that they're out there living their best lives, even if I can't be a part of the audience of their work. You were all amazing and I feel lucky that I got to have you in my life for that one glorious moment in internet history where we were all young and easily entertained. Sincerely, thank all of you for your work and dedication. And thank you Vinny for making this video. :)
It looks like you were at least aware of this series since I saw footage of it in one of the video boxes near the start of the video, but I think Mind Of Ryan was one of the best little-known series to be released on UA-cam. The series in question covered the Half-Life 1 mod Echoes, and was based around a robotics engineer from Sector G. The episodes took place during the late collection of mind series from 2018-2020, the 'Muddled Minds', and had started off slow in the first episode, which, is seemingly just a trend with every series to exist, however, the series vastly improved over a mere seven episodes. The protagonist was one with perhaps the strongest moral compass out of any mind series character, with Ryan so much as refusing to use a crowbar on a zombie; deeming it 'inhumane.' He once referred to his laboratory being in the biology department, despite not being a biologist; a callback to the original Half-Life. Further tacking onto this, he would mention the full technical readout of the Tau Cannon while under a stressful situation to calm himself down, explaining that he was going to add a self-limitation system to the cannon to prevent it from overcharging. Besides fun callbacks to the original game, it's creator, Draven Fleming, would make references to other mind series, similarly to what Ian Riley or Robin Darnell did. He mentioned Barney's hatred for safety hazards, specifically, handrails when he ran into him at a tram station, and would later place a phone call with Arlen while on a supply elevator. Arlen, being from the mind series covering a different Half-Life Mod, Azure Sheep. Fleming created his own artwork for ending sequences, composed unique music for each episode, and even introduced a cutscene-esque intro sequence in the 7th episode, similar to what Ross Scott did about halfway through Freeman's Mind. He often inserted audio clips of dialogue, announcements, and would even add visual effects from time-to-time, such as bullsquid spit, or picking up a Snickers Bar off of a security officer. Unfortunately, due to a lot of issues, such as the movement of the creator's households, the hype that his community has for the next episode, and, most critically, the death of his old computer, the series has been on a hiatus of currently unknown lengths. I know the creator is probably under a lot of stress at the moment, so, more attention is probably not a thing he needs right now. Therefore, I'll delete this comment if necessary. I just felt as if this late-generation mind series deserves a good watch.
Ah, man, this is a blast from the past. I only really ever watched Barney and Shepard's Mind, but I still remember a lot about this time period. It was great and fascinating seeing all these people cross over back then, it was like that a lot with the Mario 64 machinima scene too.
This video was great, I learned a lot more about the Mind community. I didn't know that there was so many more Mind series! This has given me a lot more inspiration and tips in making my own Mind series. I hope a bloodthirsty robot hasn't been used yet.
Not sure if you've seen this yet but all the Freeman's (-ish) Mind 2 videos (minus redux) are in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL911BE76FC38A6334.html
This was an amazing video that addressed such a niche and awesome community. I would personally like to give recognition to Rookie’s Mind which was based on Halo 3: ODST. It’s an underrated series in the community.
Oh wow I just found out about this video haha I coincidentally thought about the other Mind creators and how long ago it was. It’s nice to hear their voices again, it’s a strange sense of nostalgia. I’m glad to see that they’re doing good, and that Ross continues his long march.
Oh my God, this video was great! When I was a younger lad, I always wanted to make a mind series. Of course, that never happened, but these guys helped inspire me to be a creative! Hearing that Cyh and Ian got married is so cute and sweet all at the same time. Thanks to all the mind creators, for making my younger years so fun.
I wish you had mentioned TheGamingBaconator, the creator of Sohn's Mind. It's on par with the other mind series and it's just so underrated. He's also still been updating it to this very day.
Man watching this video really just makes me want to do a mind series/lets rolepay video. I always wanted to try and make one. I even have made a couple of them in the past, but later took them down. They were just awful. Like really bad. I made a cod zombie one that had the character die at the end. But made a trailer for a season 2 where it got teleported to other cod zombies modes. It was filmed on my phone pointing it to the tv. I tried doing a RE5 mind series which made no sense because Chris can talk. They were bad. But maybe I will try my hand at doing it again. The mind series have always been so close to me. I watched so many videos and tried to look for so many more. I eternally found out about the let’s roleplay community. Which are similar to mind series but are more unscripted and improved. I loved this video. It was kinda nostalgic. Man so many good memories.
This is beautiful video, i've just joined the Half Life universe community last year, and man, i wish i would have grown up at the time all these series aired, i was genuinly blushing and squeeking of happiness because two guys that i've never seen videos of got married, and by god i would have scream if i knew them back on the day, that also says nice things about your video, you made me care for people that i never knew before, making me feel nostalgia from memories that aren't mine. Even to i would have love to be a part of the old and vivid community, seeing all of this history gives it it's own type of charm. Seeing how the mind's group have come so far makes me see myself in them, and the wonderful friends that i've met during one of the hardest time of my life until date thanks to the internet, and it makes me wish that our frienship grows as far and as strong as theirs. Thank you for informing me of this, i love you Mind's community
It woulda been sick to get Ross, but this video wasnt really about him. It was about the community that accidentally came from his series, so I felt it was more important to get their thoughts.
I wasn't on youtube for the "mind" videos that this video is about but after watching some episodes and seeing videos like yours I honestly feel like making my own mind series with a more recent/niche silent protagonist game, i bet id be the first to start a new mind series in a while though but who knows
This is just a thought, but watching this retrospective, I think this community may have even affected Half Life 2 modding, specifically Entropy Zero 2. Entropy Zero 2 is a Half Life 2 modded campaing that follows a Combine Elite allowed to retain his personality due to his competence back when he was a regular cop (He took out an entire Rebel Stronghold in the first installment) it has the quality of an official Half Life spin off like Opposing Force, but with the interesting difference that the protagonist is not silent. And the way he is written reminds me a lot of all of this Mind series, from his one liners and quips to his weird relationship with an old prototype Aperture turret. Of course since his dialogues are written into the story there are more serious scenes and actual conversations, but almost all the jokes rely solely on the main character and they are written just like the jokes of this videos. If you are looking for inspiration to write a videogame character, I think this series are a genuine good place to look for it.
Wow, this video only now hit my radar. But during it I was wondering why Cyh and Ian were in the same call while Robin was on his own, or that they were all separated into their own sections. Especially since Cyh seems like such an introvert. It didn't even dawn on me that the reason was that Cyh and Ian were probably in the same room and married! That's awesome. I watched these series as a kid and I always wanted to toss my hat into the mind series when I could. It was a driving force behind roleplaying in games, and there's probably still bits of inspiration now that I'm a writer. Sadly, I grew up far too late to kick off a mind series of my own, and I wouldn't even know what game I would do if I were to try one. Still all the mind series was great, even if some of it is dated.
This deserves to be shared around. You brought back a bit of our younger selves in this retrospective, brought back some our favourite Mind series creators to tell their stories. This truly is a labor of love, man, and I fucking respect that! To Ian, Robin, Cyh, & Jared. It's been so long. Good to hear from you guys again!
It's sad, cause Felix's mind had the highest amount of technical effort at the time. I remember him making a video, where he said something along the lines of "i'm not proud of my work, it's extremely easy to make, it was all crap", but it had source engine implementation even Ross wouldn't do until FM2.
I'm surprised nobody has done one of these for COD, especially the older ones. Even SCP:CB HAS ONE! (Although unfinished) I think somebody should start a series based on cod1 and then expand to mw3 and bo2.
I ALMOST made a mind series in Crysis 2: "Alcatraz's Mind". I ended up not doing it for two reasons. 1. I didn't have the equipment, spare time and especially the confidence to go through with it. 2. It seemed like a good idea at the time; coming from the mind of a 17 year old high school junior. But looking back, I realize that I would have made some mistakes, a few bad writing choices and it would've ended up cringy and reeking of amateur. I guess I said all of that to say that these guys' movement was so influential, that it almost made me start a mind series...ALMOST.
played opposing force for first time while watching shepards mind in december. loved it great series. also mod for half life echoes haves its mind series that is pretty noice. just saying if you have an itch you need to have scratched check it out.

I haven't heard your voice in a long time.
A darn shame
So what you are saying is Ross Scott making a video where he plays half life and screams into a microphone pretending to be Gordon Freeman caused the marriage of two complete strangers?
Let's see.... Freeman's Mind started as an experiment for Ross to get videos out quicker than Civil Protection. In the span of over 10 years, the results yielded:
- 87 Episodes spanning two (and a half including Uplink) games.
- The birth of a devoted fanbase
- The birth of a machinima sub-genre
- A number of Mind-series based on other games
- A small "coalition of weirdos" that united their respective Mind series into a universe.
- A shit-ton of lines to quote out of context
- A married couple from said coalition
I call this a success.

When i visited this tv tropes page just to see freeman's ish mind 2 i was greeted with the video being unavailable
I just realized that Robin making Shepard high on Oxycodone predates Ross making Gordon high on Morphine a couple of years later.
Alex So funny thing, I ACTUALLY was going to include a bit where I talked about it, but scrapped it in the end. I asked Robin his thoughts on it in the interview and he didn’t have much to say past “That’s a funny coincidence.”
Matt's Mind was and still is my passion project. The show turns ten this year...and still going strong. Nice to know there's still fans out there.
Used to love watching Matts Mind dude and its crazy seeing you comment on one of my vids. Im glad you enjoyed it man.
Congrats on reaching that milestone!
@TheAwesomeGuy I had completely forgot about that. It was a long time ago and dwelling on it would just be petty at this point. I've dropped it.
@TheAwesomeGuy That would be their decision and not mine.
Oh shit, i used to watch you when i was a brony, i had no idea you made a mind series!

Shit, I still remember when they were both active, plus all of the Minds podcasts. Hell, I’m still subbed to Robin, Ian, and Cyh even though there’s nothing coming out just because I still occasionally go back to rewatch their stuff, but I digress.
I found out about Opposites Attack a year or two after it got abandoned and didn’t know much about what was going on BTS, but now…
Shit, man.
Nerdy introvert in high school now a married man... how time flies. But the mind series stays strong.
I love how they called it "Coalition of Weirdos". Reminds me of Goonies and Loosers Gang
Learning about these mind series years later and becoming obsessed with them is so difficult because so much had been lost 😭
I truly hope some day they unprivate/make public all the videos again I enjoy this media so much
Ian's wrong, I'm greatly ashamed of what I made.
@@vinnysuperg123 Really gonna need the music used in this video, please and thank you
@@somebonehead Some of the music from this is from Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicals. Sorry if I ain't Vinny telling you, but hope that solves that!
Ian's Lord Alprazolam joke somehow stuck with me all these years, next time I play a wizard in D&D I'm making that my character name.

Kitty0706. Damn, I wish I got to see his stuff when he was still around.
And lets not forget Edd Gould too!
That makes me realize that we're all gonna 80 one day, sitting somewhere probably dying, and we're gonna be thinking of how we were once messing around on the internet.
this feels very professional, great job! You've immortalized a tiny bit of my childhood

This was an amazing video and brought back many happy memories ^_^
Like you said, it was a golden age of content, a lot of great machinima was made at that time.

Sincerely i don't know if that counts but the recent series Half-Life but the AI is self-aware kinda revived the whole genre.
Just hearing about these guys still being around makes me smile, those were wonderful years
What a twist! I'm surprised to learn of all of this since i only caught a couple of the "spin-offs". It's truly amazing!
That is cool dude
Not sure if you've seen this yet but all the Freeman's (-ish) Mind 2 videos (minus redux) are in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL911BE76FC38A6334.html
Now we just need Mitchell’s mind
But Mitchell talks
@@mitkodimtrov3914then he talks more
This was an amazing video that addressed such a niche and awesome community.
It's weird hearing Robin, Ian, and Cya's voices again.
Especially Robin, he's been gone for a while.
Seriously, it’s a bit surreal lol
I wish you had mentioned TheGamingBaconator, the creator of Sohn's Mind. It's on par with the other mind series and it's just so underrated. He's also still been updating it to this very day.
That's very true, Sohn's Mind is WAY too underrated for the quality of the show.
Man I still feel nostalgic about them.
Oh dear God I forgot I did Watson's mind... Haha.
I can't even remember if I had intended to make a series of it or just a one off shit-post.
Thank you for informing me of this, i love you Mind's community
only 2 mind series still going the rest have faded into nostalgia
You didnt get the legend himself on this. The others were funny but ross was and is a genius
It woulda been sick to get Ross, but this video wasnt really about him. It was about the community that accidentally came from his series, so I felt it was more important to get their thoughts.
@@vinnysuperg123 Fair point and i guess ross is a busy guy anyway. Hope he finishes FM 2 in this decade.
I'm so glad I found this video and your channel. It was an amazing way back trip and I learned some cool new facts. Minds are forever!
43:48 Wait, nimrod house is a mind series? HOLY SHIT THE RAGING ROBLOX REVIEWER HAS A MIND SERIES!
I never grew up with it and found it 2 years ago and fell in love
I wasn't on youtube for the "mind" videos that this video is about but after watching some episodes and seeing videos like yours I honestly feel like making my own mind series with a more recent/niche silent protagonist game, i bet id be the first to start a new mind series in a while though but who knows
I remember when they all met up and recorded 'Meeting of the Minds'. It was pretty hype. I can't find the video now, though.
I don’t get how this only has 3K views when this video is so well done and well made
Keep up the good work
This is just a thought, but watching this retrospective, I think this community may have even affected Half Life 2 modding, specifically Entropy Zero 2.
My favorite "mind" series that wasnt freemans mind is deffo Courier's mind. So much fun haha.
I'm surprised nobody has done one of these for COD, especially the older ones. Even SCP:CB HAS ONE! (Although unfinished) I think somebody should start a series based on cod1 and then expand to mw3 and bo2.
Small Heart Disease detected. Vital signs critical. Automatic medical systems engaged. Morphine administered.
If Vinny made a Mind series, what would it be?
Diaper Chief's mind
Wonderful video. Mind series is something I always come back to every now and then. The good ones, the bad ones. All needs some level of appreciation.
OHMY GOD IAN IS STILL ALIVE
I have seen you in at least once in every single main mind's series' comments. How are you everywhere?
@@justsomerandomaccount I DON'T KNOW
Omg they got married?! That soo sweet!
You should tell robin about through the city the best opposing force 2 mod if you can get in touch
