Patroclus was actually Achlies cousin and favorite sparing partner. Patroclus stole Achlies armor and his glory. Achlies never got over Patroclus loss.
Only in the movie Troy are they related, which differs significantly from The Iliad. Book 23 describes how Patroclus and Achilles came to know each other when Achilles had a dream/vision of Patroclus’ ghost - basically Peleus took Patroclus in as a troubled youth who killed another man over a dice game. Patroclus and Achilles are not cousins anywhere else except in the movie.
