- Over the course of four years and countless man-hours, what was once a bone-stock White E31 850 has transformed into this: a completely reimagined E31 858.
Rey Rivera, recognized as an expert in all things BMW, conceived the idea of turning this E31 into something BMW would never dare to attempt. With expert assistance from automotive designer @jonsibal, this E31 features elements inspired by some of the most iconic pieces of BMW design-E30 box flares, an E46 M3 CSL front bumper, and more. Jon took all these influences, matched them perfectly to the body style, and Rey and his team brought it to life.
This E31 goes far beyond its looks. Beneath its carbon body hides the remnants of an E60 M5 donor car, retaining all the stock electrical components, subframes, suspension, and, of course, the drivetrain. The stock S85 engine from the E60 was taken to the next level by the team at @carbahnmotors, who upgraded the 5.0L V10 to a 5.8L stroker V10. To enhance the engine sound, a carbon intake from @eventuri was added.
With everything else covered, the interior could not be overlooked. Rey and his team wrapped the entire interior in black leather, including the manual E36 Vaders that he installed. To further merge the E60 and E31, the iDrive system, climate controls, dash, and accessory buttons were all integrated into the iconic E31 dashboard. To top it all off, this car features a 6-speed manual transmission. This conversion was supported by our team at PSI, who also assisted with many of the coding and wiring procedures, helping to complete this build as the ultimate grand touring vehicle.

The attention to detail is insane. This project is absolutely bleeding with passion. One of a kind vehicle.
Definitely big love for such builds..
I think the attention to detail is completely absent. Wheel to arch fitment is horrible, front-end grille curved the wrong way, they're extracting warm air where there is none, the bumper holes don't actually feed the engine intakes, interior rushed and un-finished. The concept is so good but this, sans actually running, is months away from being finished.
@@TBendez Nice Volvo
@@abebros First car, embassy owned (ambassadors car), 143k miles. That had panel fitment, everything straight as an arrow and no wonky bits 😉😘.
@@TBendez Wow ambassador car, that’s sick
I love everything about it except the tail lights. This is everything that the M8 should've been! 👌🏽
on this colour they`re fitting in quite well.
I'd done a full width LED bar type tail light and preferrably in red. Otherwise a neat Build 👍👌
Stunning car and perfect build! While not in name , there was an 8 series M car. The 850Csi had a bespoke M badged S70B56 (which would become the McLaren F1 engine) and M logos in the interior as well. Only 1500ish cars were produced and even the Vin says the manufacturer is BMW Motorsport not BMW Ag. Also the model name on the certificate of title is stated as M8. PS: Took me a while but I just realized Rey is the guy from that amazing Petrolicious video from more then a decade ago with the E24s. He's the reason I bought E24s and E28s since then!
Link to that old video?
@@zackforeman4293 There is only one functional E31 M8 prototype produced by M-power sport division unfortunately when it was presented to head-board financial experts was not accepted to be produced not even as a limited series for costly expenses of the factory to produce such vehicle for that time, small desire & lack of requests from possible customers interesting on such vehicle of that time.. So yeah here is a link that i found that explain more about it :
ua-cam.com/video/-UnZOuUSvo4/v-deo.html
What a sad story since the car was really engineered to maximum performance ( might be thought for track only use ) with so much extensive use of carbon composites-parts even for the unique first time used carbon/alloy wheels - the center spokes of each rim were made from carbon composite, most engine covers, inlets+ air ducts / carbon bonnet, carbon roof, carbon trunk, inside only 2 FIA -racing spec carbon seats, side windows from doors made from lexan and with small opening, minimum comfort, no stereo, no sat-nav, no air conditioning less electronic functions no ABS, or power steering, even pop-up lights got deleted and all was thought for lighting maximum performance, air flow cooling was revised and improved a lot with bonnet vents, carbon side vents, front lower vents carbon cooling ducts it was an epic masterful engineered vehicle that despite the fact it was tested back in 1998.. people started to found out about only after 2010 when M-power sport division department open doors for some journalists who took some pictures & filmed some secret cars including the secret E31- M8 prototype and that is how people found out, otherwise the car would have still be kept secret.. Here is one engineer explaining some more details about unique E32 - M8 prototype:

@@zackforeman4293 Here is the one and only E31 M8 prototype explained the unique features by one of the engineers who worked on it :
ua-cam.com/video/xzjkpFO2MGw/v-deo.html
and here is another clip that explain more about why the car did not make it to production :
ua-cam.com/video/-UnZOuUSvo4/v-deo.html
No, you're hyperboling the Jason Cammisa special on the 850CSi, present the facts as they are known, nothing in this clip says otherwise.
The actual M8, see the BMW Classic film on it, had the S70/1 which would later become the S70/2 used in the F1 (and modified further in the X5 Le Mans).

Looks amazing. Only thing I would change....the tail lights.
clear lenses are so ugly on silver cars
Yup
My only complaint
Smoked/darkened normal tail lights would fit in a lot better than the clears
looks so cheap and unfinished. like late 90s honda accord import tuner
Yeah, the tail lights on the render at 2:10 would be perfect but to add on to that I also think it should have kept the popup headlights as it's a defining feature of the car.
Next time, host. Let the guest talk about their build, and stop talking over them like it's your car
It grieves me that the first comment l read on this thread is negative. Those guys are friends talking to each other. So kindly leave them alone.
I literally couldnt tell who owned the car several times during the video, i had to double take it.
I see what you mean! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Who's car is it?! Hahaha
Didn’t get that vibe at all…
I just see a passionate guy why try chuck him under the buss he brought you amazing content
FINALLY, someone put the S85 in a E31 chassis
Front end cues from a italdesign Nazca C2 loud in the front end. That’s a smooth car no doubt. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I feel like an AMG Hammer and this restomod would make an pic photoshoot. The two most iconic cars from these competitors.
If you mean HWA EVO, yes!
850 CSi for decades has been my dream car. This one comes very close to it. Fantastic design and execution. Hope to see more of it in the future 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
The greatest looking BMW

The greatest engine by BMW

The greatest BMW on the planet
Nahh 😂 but 8series was most beuaty.
l only wish the taillights were red, otherwise its a 100000000000/10, best 8 series to ever exist
e31 is one of my fav cars the shape is incredible! this build pays respect while adding his own design elements. incredible work
What an amazing build. Love the integration of the E60 powertrain and electronics. Wow.
Almost perfect. What I would change: I would make taillights a bit more narrow. Outside of that, build is EPIC. Congrats
and paint them red
interior quality isnt it for me, but the outside and drivetrain is gold 😍 only thing i dont understand is the bottom of the doors, why are they not flush ?
Super dope. Jon Sibal been killing it since the E36 days.
One of the BEST custom cars I’ve seen in a while…💎💎💎
I’ve wanted an E31 for so long, it’s awesome to see people still developing the platform
I saw this at the show and spent so much time going around it. I was absolutely enamored. Really nicely done and great integration of one of the coolest ///M’s, the e60!
Very beautyful build ❣️👍🏼
I love restomods...for me they are the best cars you can get ❕🤩
The 850 with V10 + manual sounds like an absolutely dream combination 👌🏼
Love from Berlin 🇩🇪
Ramsi 🙋🏻♂️
By far the best E31 restomod ever built. I mean those guys over completed this project, beauty lies in the simplicity of the design and it really looks oem.. in love with the popup headlight delete and replacing the with air ducts is a brilliant design decision.. and when i hear the name of Jonsibal i knew that this is going to be flawless!
What an amazing machine, four years in the making for a build like this is really good time! I too have been building a similar s85 e31, not to the level that this one has been built to. Let me be the first to say that a swap like this is not for the faint of heart or a beginner. This swap is essentially thousands of tiny problems that all need to be solved. I take my hat off to ray and his team. Amazing work!!!!!!!
I hope they will eventually offer this as a service. I always wanted a 850 and would buy one in a heart beat if i can have it modded like this.
Beautiful build.
Beautiful exterior, I think you may work more on the interior for next year
Lot more, several times. I'm stops watching on 11:30 , because of my eyes was in pain.
Nice car. The wheels and clear tails kills it for me honestly.
I know 😢
Absolutely! Needs the AC schnitzer style deep lip 3-piece wheels in the back, with the rivets, like in the 90's.. And yea why the clear tailights.. Changing out tailights is a cheap mod that I did back in high school with my friends lol
Wheels make or break a car. They're too alpine or businessman style. Needs some rims to match the aggressive tweaks on the rest of the car
Im not even a BMW fan but this looks so clean u dont see that very often 💯🔥
The whole build is incredible, but those wheels and that diffuser are my favorite parts!!
That thing is flawless. Props to Rey Speed Shop.
Great build, nice styling. I would've made the rear lights red and the round air intakes on the bumper square but what a build. Nice wheel choice too, not the first design you'd think of but spot on.
Astonishing car, tastefully built 👍👍
One of the best custom builds I’ve ever seen. So well done and great interview showcasing all of the details.
Spot on build. So cool they have thought about driveabilty and servicing.
Wow!!! Congrats on this build!!! Would you consider a retail build for this for the masses? 4 years, that's alot of dedication and perseverance. Enjoy in good health.
Man I love this build. I have always wanted a 8 Series to go with my E38 750
Attention to detail is spot on. Nice build.
I like pop up head light from this car. That makes this type of car different
The M8 got rid of them because they weighed too much. This car had to ditch them not just because of weight, but because the S85 intakes need to suck in more air than the stock inlet flow allows, hence the hood scoops.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful BMW resto mod! It's a performance beast 💪
This is such a slick resto and as someone who is not a fan of pop up headlights this execution is dang near flawless. As a Saab and JDM fan I love the clears tails. They add that extra little 90s, early 2000s flair and style. Bravo🤌👍👏👏
Whilst there are a few details here and there that are not to my personal taste (yeah those clear rear lights) this is an absolutely terrific build and I salute anyone modernizing an E31 to keep it on the road. Can't wait to hear this thing actually being driven. Also, BMW should sit up and take notice - the E31 is one of the most beloved older BMWs by fans, and it wasn't exactly fast, lightweight or track ready. It was loved because it looked awesome - clean, understated, business-like and mean. Maybe think about that before the next gigantically nostrilled quadruple fender-flared carbon-fiber-vented concept monstrosity gets green-lit for production.
!!! WoooW !!!
It's restomoded exactly how I dreamt about modernised e31 for years!! Wide-body KS8 Ci by Koenig Specials from 90' was pretty wild but this one is more settled and hugely elegant! They took my ideas even much further! Yes there are details I would make differently but it's everyones individual choice...Now under restomod fashion trend It would be worth opening project of limited production! There's a market for 30-50 units priced about $250k.
My Custom Dream Car!!! 🥰
I wish modern cars looked like this again
What an incredible build!! Though I do question using that certified basket case of a motor, but all on all that is a super clean build ⭐
Will this car be added to Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport? Definitely deserves to come to the virtual world!
Sounds amazing, great test drive, that shift from 2nd to third, the way it corners, sounds, when you guys see cars made out of fiber glass that they don’t test drive in the video there is usually a reason for it
This is an awesome build and hope to see more of it
Wow that’s some work there. Absolutely fantastic
Beautiful build. All the best with it, sir. Wish we could see it drive more. Hopefully another video with an on road experience in the future.
this is such a dream build
Great interview, you did your homework and led the owner to tell us what we wanted to see
What a Masterpiece! It definitely looks oem. Gorgeous
stunning, but the gap at the center console at 11:00 looks horrible
The widebody kit is perfect, like the e30...but even the e30 M3 doesn't get the special doors!
So much better than the wide body conversions of the time. Fantastic build.
This build is quite epic, thx for the video!
This car is the grandfather of my 1M hatchback v8 s65 😂😂 nice project 👍🏻👍🏻✌🏼
This is absolutely gorgeous and well thought out.
Modern BMW's have lost their way but this guy found it.
After the 350k Porsche 914 today on Top Gear....my sweet something... what a looker. Just perfect. Thank you so much for putting this into the world.
The interior is as perfect as the exterior. This is such a proper era appropriate build through and through. If I ever commissioned a build I’d call Ray for his expertise. On any back dated custom BMW build that is.
Wow ! so much work that looks seamless.
Awesome job, guys... You've just made Honda NSX... Senna would be proud...
saw this car at Legends, the build is amazing in person
Brilliant build! I love this car along with that 1 series with the s85 as well!
Now that is how you resurrect a legend...
I want to see that thing on the track.
Reminds me of the 2007 AM DBS from Casino Royale. Absolutely gorgeous!
S85 is def the ultimate engine and swap 🎉
E36 M3 Mirrors? This is what BMW should be doing today. Complementing their newest chassis with the greatest aspects of all their predecessors. Take tips BMW GMBH.
I’m not a bmw fan but this model is screaming for the pop up headlights. It just made that way.
Seen this car in a video was dying to know more about it! Thank you!!
Bodywork - Custom
Wheels - Custom
Engine work- Custom
Taillights - Temu
Love the details. Very nice project , very nice car. So much effort . Very very good. Respect 👍🙏
That's awesome. I've always daydreamed about doing an 850csi restomod with full carbon body and taking that 5.5l V12 and destroking it to get the RPMs up around 10,000
10,000 rpms on the S70 is virtually impossible. Even the Mclaren F1 iteration of it gets nowhere near that.
today the fans create amazing BMW's instead of BMW who now mainly makes ugly cars with big grills. what a time to be alive
This has gotta be my favourite restomod sick of seeing these boring porsches an stuff this is a thing of beauty being a beema guy just wow mate it’s gonna get shared a few times to friends an I hope you really enjoy it
absolutely Magnificent! So Beautiful, you guys Nailed-it!!!!
Tail lights gotta go but otherwise she is the most beautiful E31 I have seen. Great job!!
S85 who would have thought any different 🤯
Amazing build and great interview. Your knowledge of bmw’s is insane!
For the taillights I would definitely retrofit like modern striped LED lights that shit would make this car look insane but overall this car is still a 10 out of 10 this is insane. I wish this existed. I would definitely be a potential buyer.
Lot of work in there, interesting that the rear arches didn't run into the doors too like the fronts do, coukd have looked a bit more subtle. Rear lights are a missed opportunity from a graphic perspective but each to their own, extremely cohesive for a non OEM build.
Gorgeous wheels. First thing I thought was screams early Alpina. Wow.
It's definitely made like bmw should have done it. Great craftsmanship and beautiful car. I personally just don't like the design of the wheel but that's just me. The one picture of the car on the trailer with the LeMans on it at 15:31.... that moment I was thinking "That's the look"
Also I thought at first I would prefer red tail lights but when I saw them lighting up I liked the white ones. Think in Estoril blue it would also look amazing.
Just can say easily one of the best restomods I've ever seen.
Wow! Such a great build, OEM +++++. Amazing!
Wow. What a fabulous build. Absolutely stunning.
That car is insane
It's looking perfect on the exterior and I wish you have more time to finetune the interior...it doesn't quite match with the look.
Some all red tails would look so much better than the clears. Cool car nonetheless.
Love the wide body, wheels, and interior…obviously the power train as well. I just don’t care for the front and rear end treatments. Wish it still had the pop-up headlights and colored taillights. Still…what a cool build.
Always like that car and what was done here is truely amazing. Execution and finished product is next level. Just curious if he only does BMW’s. How about an Aston Martin Vanquish Volante for a freshing up?
Stunning car, but I'm not so keen on the clear rear lenses been one colour. There is a slight link to the Alfa Romeo SZ too from the lights at the front. Beautiful location too.
its OK, WOW !!!!!!! thanks guys Andrew
What an amazing Build ❤
Ultra Amazing build.... Congrats
2:18 casual amg hammer driving by in the background
I love restomods. :) What a great car.
Wowww what a dream! I just wish we could have heard it rev
WoW! stunning build.
Holy cow ! ! ! when i see it first time , i thought it's a drawing or something. also, obivious that, spent a lot of time , effort and money on it. i love it !
just, i could use mansory or alpine for rims. ...
Gorgeous car
I tip my hat to the builder 💯 👍
