I use to own a lb7
Got over 600k. Neva replace trans, water pump, or head gasket. Only replace injectors twice. Was a damn good truck.
Melvin S I’ve done injectors on mine and now time for head gasket ... and no I don’t beat it or have a tuner
If you had a 7.3 power stroke, You wouldn't have to do all that.
@@pipeline_hank5277 good idea to drain oil from injector on top Yt power stroke help explains it kill injectors as in does not circulate well n needs chanced with oil changes ,bit odd but makes sense
@@pipeline_hank5277 7.3s have injector issues also. An 01 lb7 compared to a 01 7.3 was a night and day difference. 7.3s have no power compared to a lb7. God you 7.3 fanboys are something else
If you had a 6 bt, you wouldn't have to do all that and get decent mileage. 7.3 was a good engine but my 6 bt get's about 6 mpg more and pulls like a freight train.
Have a 2004 LB7 with 560k, bought new in 2004. Did injectors for the first and hopefully last time at 530k. It’s all about good, clean fuel.
And removal of the air from fuel with an air dog .
I have a 2015 LML. Threw a rod at 189k miles. It cost me 25 thousand dollars for a new engine. Man I miss my LB7
An LB7 with new injectors, ARP studs, and head gasket makes a lifetime running truck along with that Allison trans. Just keep up the paint and get the rust off the bottom, no reason why it won't be a lifelong tool.
LB7 LLY and LBZ are the best years of the Duramax I got 222k on my 05 and still going strong sadly after 08 they stating have the same issue that ford 6.0 diesel has!

I've got 200k on my current Bosch injectors and balance rates are still good and no issues. I swapped them in April 2016 at 800k. I currently have 996k on odometer. 2001 Chevy LB7 at stock power.
Got any tips on how you got the mileage out of the truck?

Good advice but my LB7 was bulletproof. Kept that truck for 11 years. Never had any issues with the engine or transmission. Pulled a 37 ft. 5 wheel . 330,000 when I traded. Amazing vehicle. I had a friend with a power joke and I just loved watching him work on it.
Hilarious. Never heard this before
@pigdestroyz heard it too many times man these duramax engines are superior and best part is you don't have to rip the fucking cab off for small repairs fucked over rebuilt dodges for a reason
@@badazz2969 I agree, but I call bs that duanequam7709 didn't have to do injectors in those 330,000 miles

Miss my LB7. After injectors were done, over 350k no blow by, sounded amazing, hauled anything, loved mud. I'd get another 1 in a heartbeat
good to the point video.everything you've mentioned I've replaced. bosche injectors,ARP head studs, c series head gaskets, mbrp downpipe. bigger stainless up pipes, full 4 inch mbrp exhaust, glow plugs ,updated exhaust manifold (driver side) , water pump, stainless fuel lines from fuel rail, all new hardware for valve covers list goes on. i hope it lasts a while . if anyone has questions ,ask away.
How's it holding up?
Bought my 2003 Lb7 with 800 miles and got injectors at 133k,. Drove it to 318k with absolutely zero issues. Went down as one of the best I have ever had.
I'd love to see more vids like this for any and all engines! Regular or commercial even. I like to do research before making a purchase but with forums you never know the reliability of the information you're receiving. To know a REAL mechanic is providing the info is a huge help. Thanks!
I just recently bought me a 2002 LB7 duramax. She has 214k miles when I bought her shes running strong as ever right now and am loving it
How is it a year later?
The kitty cat was ready to help. Lol
Need more cat content. I'd make a channel just working on my drift car with my cats lol

I like duramax but the cat giving him a hint "CATERPILLAR" should been the diesel put in the 80s & 90s GM pickups instead of Detroit$ had that been solidified there would be no Isuzu duramax.
While I had my LB7 pulled apart for injector and turbo swap I pulled the up pipes and heat wrapped them along with the new 3" down pipe. I did find a gentlemen in Helena MT that down loaded a new tune in my ECM which moved the torque curve down in the rpm range which bumped my fuel mileage up to 21 mpg on highway with a 4x4 quad cab at 1800 rpm, happy days.
I have a lb7, only have had to replace the water pump, everything is still stock from factory with currently 320k miles, still running strong and healthy
That's because you probably don't abuse it like most people
wow no injectors done?? amazing!
Normally I'm a fan of the blue oval, but this vs the 6.0 and 6.4 is no competition. I've driven all (except the 6.4) numerous times and this, especially with the allison, is the clear winner. Maybe everything wrong with 6.9/7.3 IDI's next? That's my cup o' tea
I think he already did everything wrong with a 7.3 or 7.3 idi
@@steve6.7 he did the 7.3 powestroke
Funny how this was about the 6.6 Duramax and suddenly somebody had to spout about some other engine totally unrelated to this. Duh.
Oby-1 if you watch the beginning you’ll understand why
Ford can't build decent diesel engines to save its sole. The rest of the trucks are great. Ford + Cummins = winner. Ford + Duramax = winner too.

Sick of comments trash talking one brand or another-DOUBLE CHECK!!!!....Every brand of vehicles has good and bad. Period. My grandpa had a early 2000s Ford F250 with the infamous 6.0L power stroke....didnt even hit 130k before it was toast and he maintained the hell out of that thing. Dodge....all I gotta say is transmission.....You can find something negative with any auto manufacturer. Its nature of the beast. Me personally I like them all, you gotta just sift through the good and bad.
Anyway...I'll stop rambling. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DEBOSS!!!!
My lb7 has had 2 set of injectors, 1 water pump, and 1 injector pump. 290k miles, but keeps ticking. Dealership did 1 set under warranty but they claimed it was the Colorado diesel fuel causing the issues. I lived in a small small town where my diesel brothers and I discovered more water than diesel straight from the pump. Later resolved and moved to Phoenix where all the problems stopped. Been 12 years in the big city and nothing bad yet. Change the oil, fuel, and transmission filters like you do your underwear, prepare for a great truck. I think the same goes with any truck, just keep up on routine maintenance. Nothing boils my blood more than some dummy that skips on all that and later complains how the truck is a pile of poo poo. Haha rant over, great videos bud. Can’t wait to see the swap.
Dam about 10,000 in repairs?
You change your underwear?
Very informational video! Replaced injectors and turbo on my 320k mile LB7. She runs great now! Only other problems would be the starter grinding occasionally.
Right on the money with all these things mentioned. Had a 2002 bought it with 8k drove it till it had 328k, and had very few issues only injectors, and water pump. Very very good truck, and pulled well for the day.
I'm a ford guy with a love for cummins. just can't stand the trucks they come in. lol. I'm doing a P pump 12V into an 86 F350 CCLB.. I bought a high mileage LB7 six months ago for a crackhead price. I've had 7.3 and 6.0 trucks. the truck is stock other than exhaust. It runs circles around any other stock deezul I've had. The injectors on mine were done at 260K. i've got 290K on it now. pulled a 35' gooseneck with 25k lbs of concrete slabs an hour home last week and couldn't believe A) it did it so well, B) how well it stopped with 3 axles of brakes.
It's a badass truck I got cheap to pull shit. Its had a heavy trailer on since the day I got it. The injectors get a bad wrap because of the cavitation caused from the CP3 sucking fuel from the tank with no help from a lift pump. so now you have cavitation, shitty fuel, water, etc and its a recipe for disaster with the nozzles getting sandblasted essentially. A good lift pump and extra filtration will do wonders on these injectors.
Freakingstang why? They look better, and the transmissions honestly hasn’t been a issue since 2007
I think they look better too but that is subjective.
Two years later she’s at 360k and no engine related issues. Body is starting to show its age. Front end needs some work but she keeps truckin along. More than I can say about my 6.7 Cummins swapped 07 psd or my 24v Cummins swapped obs. Lol

“Pay to Play”...boy have I learned that lesson :D
I love my 02 LB7 with 355,330 miles..love doing the injector replacement and running the valves..little more if a challenge than working on a Cummins....5.9 cummins is my favorite engine...and this is coming from a 02 LB7 and 15 LML Duramax owner!
Great video! And perfect explanation on the LB7 I posted a video months ago and it’s tough to hit all the points take care
I love your videos truck master!!!! I didn’t know you watched this channel! That’s pretty cool!!!
We (at the shop) looked up how many engines we have replaced in the last 10 years. 170 Powerstrokes, 17 Cummins, and 2 Duramax. Now I have to qualify that this area is Ford country.
I'm a current owner of an lb7 and the struggle is real with injectors..love the truck though!
I think DeBoss is one of the best mechanic channels on UA-cam. Unlike a lot of other people who make an oil change video and pretend to be a mechanic, he seems to know exactly what hes talking about with everything but doesn't act cocky about it (cough cough Scotty Kilmer)
Mine's a 2001, GMC 2500HD LB7, only has 71k miles on it, so no injector problems just yet. I love the way it drives and pulls, and I've got no problem doing injectors, head studs, and head gaskets when they go (and I'm sure they will eventually). Going to drive it until it falls apart under me. 😂
We've found that with most the GM reviews that we've done, everyone agrees with the common problems but loves the trucks anyway. I would think 8 out of 10 would buy this generation of truck again.
I love mine. 290k 22mpg 500hp. Crew cab long bed
Ted Bownas 300k miles stock only done injectors and recently replaced all the fuel hoses. First set of injectors was completely covered under warranty. The transfer case has issues too with rubbing a hole in the casing. Even got 300k miles out of the rear rotors and pads drove until the rear pads went down to metal lol since I bought new rear rotors too.
You can do a lot of repairs for the money a new truck costs.
Won’t be getting rid of mine. 450hp 24mpg. Eclb on 33s with ranch hand. Owned for 5 years. Always starts in negative temps. Had the Bosch remans done 6 years ago. Run good fuel an additive and have a lift pump. Only issues I’ve been having is dexcool rotting out all the coolant lines🙃.
As a LB7 owner I would like to say at 1:30 when you say "any lb7 on the road has had their injectors replaced", you are wrong. I am still all original with no issues. Granted I only have 108k miles lol. Love the channel keep up the great content!
So EVERYTHING thats wrong with it are injectors and the possibility of a water pump? That leaps and bounds better than a powerstroke
... and for the water pump, my LB7 water pump lasted 205k. It was a PITA, but at least it lasted a LONG time.
i guess it depends on alot of things but i have 2 2001 powerstroke's both have over 350k miles and never replaced anything other than starters and alternators
divedeep25 it’s because other powerstroke owners buy cheap eBay tuners and “turn” it up.
@@divedeep2580 Sounds like 7.3
Is it? 7.3s are pretty fuckin mint and have no serious problems like injectors. Remember this engine was out the same time as as 7.3s, 6.0s are a different story. but if i had the money id be rockin a 6.0
I have a 2002 LB7 and i didn't have to change the injectors until 188,000 miles. The previous owner and myself have always ran Stanadyne performance formula diesel additive in it ever since diesel was changed from low sulfur to ultra low sulfur. They did finally go out and had the Bosch injectors put in. Have 204,000 on the truck now and she is running great!
It took me about 4 hours by myself to replace the water pump on my lb7. Definitely a tedious job but not as hard as many people think it is. If you have the correct tools at hand then it’s really not all that bad to do in an afternoon
Lol I had basic tools, took me 3 + days
“It’s the first of its kind of course you’re going to have problems with it” Navistar laughs at you with HEUI injection.
I replaced the LB7 injectors with new Bosch, and replaced the coolant pump with OEM new @ 220,000 Kms. Took the tune in it (when I bought it) back to stock. After religious service and oil changes, 385,000 on it now. Running fine. Great video! Thanks.
Good video! LB7 owner here, it’s been my first diesel and it’s been great for the past 10k miles I’ve had it. I am scared to death that something could break that could cost me a small fortune tho 😆
Sound like scotty Kilmer 🤣
@@brianbonilla9276 3 years later and she’s still holding strong with no huge repairs 💪🏻
Do a vid on the Ford 6.4/Maxx 7. That should be a good 30-40 min video.
Cracked pistons and emission bs, not much more is there?
@@traxxasrcfun 6.4 is a grenader at worst, non rebuildable at best. Can't even get parts for them anymore. A long block from Ford is $$$$.
@@SomeTechGuy666 um ok, so you agree
They are junk. You can not bulletproof a 6.4 because they had too many failure points. You can bulletproof a 6.0. The 6.4 was a lot worse than the 6.0. Parts aren’t cheap on the 6.4 because Ford won’t even sell you the parts because of Navistar. The 6.4 is designed to last until the warranty is done. After it’s out of warranty, they fail like mad. Stay away from the 6.4. Any 08-10 Super Duty is junk no matter if you get the 5.4 and 6.8 3 valve or the 6.4 PSD garbage can.

I put a wagler bullet water pump on mine at the same time redid almost all the cooling system. My injectors didn't go out but knowing these had that issue I through some sac injectors in. I've put some money into the truck for sure but compared to my other diesel trucks I'd say this one will always be my favorite.

Water pump, injectors, “excited engines/hoses that shouldnt be excited”🤣🤣 dude you’re super knowledgeable. Great video. I want an lb7 crew cab for my lawn care business so bad.
Thanks for the info. Everything else you mentioned is so true...I've been through all of it. I'm glad I'm not alone.
Yeah and yours isn't even an LB7 engine!
I had a 2002 and as far as I know gm never recalled them. I was told that they raised the warranty period to 10 years or 200,000 miles. When my injectors failed I had 115000 miles on it but it 12 years old. My dealer charged my $4500 to replace the injectors. After that, I sold my fifth wheel trailer so didn’t need the diesel anymore. Also, replaced the water pump not long after the injectors. Now am 65 years old and that truck, out of all the vehicles I have owned, is the one I was the most proud of when I bought it. Paid 33k for it. Sure can’t do that nowadays!
Not the only early 2000s Isuzu diesel with injector issues. I have an 82 1.8L Isuzu diesel with mechanical injectors with 192000 miles with absolutely no problems. Daily driver.
Mechanical injectors usually good for a few billion shots

This isn't a Isuzu tho. It's a design by dmax ltd which is owned by gm and Isuzu which both companies designed this engine.
@@jdrok5026 you literally just contradicted yourself.
@@der_pinguin44 no it's technically a dmax ltd engine. Unlike the duramax 7.8l which is actually a Isuzu contradicting myself would be saying the 7.8l isn't a Isuzu when that actually is. 2002 Silverado HD Duramax here, original owner, 95k, never had any of the issues mentioned. Pulled 35’ 5th wheel with it in the first ten years of ownership. Recently changed out coolant which still looked fine. I have kept up with oil and fuel filter maintenance over the years.

06-07 lbz? With six speed?
I have an LBZ, air was leaking into the fuel system through the filter head. Rebuilt it in about 5 seconds.
Turbo vanes like to get stuck however only in the winter when it's -20F for a while.
My buddy has an LB7 with 190k miles stock and runs like a dream and has put itself to work pulling loads and all while my 6.0 that had 160k and 10k of repairs on top still blew its heads
Gaspar Calderon tunes are what kill any diesels. Fords just come out the factory useless. But any other diesels keep the petal off of the floor and no tune and diesels last forever. Not mine it’s in the shop every other Tuesday cause my trucks so fast I break parts left and right
My dad got rid of his LB7 with 357k miles on it. Had the injectors changed twice, under warranty (the injectors were warranties to 200k miles) and then had an idler pulley bearing fail. Those ere the only things he ever did to the engine. It was tuned with the edge juice, intake, and exhaust. Truck was great, and I grew up with it and learned to drive in it.
BEST INTRO EVER!! That powerstroke owner joke almost killed me.
Fuck you😂
Great video! I have an LB7 which has started to smoke (blue) and gives off a weak fuel smell but only after being driven and brought up to temp. Doesn't seem to smoke when driving. Smoke increases substantially once she stops and idles for 5 to 10 secs (after heating up). GM tested the injectors and they came back good. I did have a billy dog tune but I have never run my truck hard, it was more for economy.
I had the same exact issue. Ended up finding a valve lodged in my exhaust manifold

Excellent work man! I always appreciate a man who is genuine and authentic. Life is hard and dirty for most of us...sometimes hot sometimes cold. I'm thinking of buying one but always wanted the simplicity of the Cumming 5.9. Going to check out a couple of Duramax diesels this weekend. 2001 dually with the ZB7 and a 2005 LLY.
I don't think I've ever heard a common rail injector referred to as "a mechanical injector made electronic" before.... I guess that's somewhat accurate. A mechanical injector has a nozzle with a needle inside of it blocking off the spray holes. The needle is held shut by a spring. The spring tension is set using shims, and this controls the injector opening pressure. The injector receives a pulse of high pressure fuel from the injection pump which pushes the needle against the spring, causing fuel to be injected. In a common rail injector, the nozzle is constructed the same way, but the nozzle spring is much smaller. There is high pressure fuel at the nozzle at all times when the engine is running. Rather than spring tension holding the needle shut, there is a control rod that rests on top of the needle, which extends up into the top of the injector. The top of this control rod sits in the control valve. Fuel at rail pressure occupies the space between the control valve and the top of the rod, balancing out the fuel trying to push up on the needle. When it's time for the injector to fire, the solenoid pulls up on the control valve, which vents fuel from the area above the control rod, allowing it to move up, which allows the needle to move up and injection to occur. In theory, very simple and elegant system, but in practice, the precise tolerances involved are mind blowing. Setting up one injector, measuring all of the shims and clearances, takes a great deal of time, which is why they are so much more expensive than older mechanical injectors.
I manage a fuel shop, and my company is a Bosch authorized rebuilder of injectors and pumps. The three parts sets unique to LB7 injectors are nozzles, control valve set, and injector body. Everything else was shared with other designs. The exact same solenoid fits 5.9 Cummins common rail injectors, as does the armature base plate assy. and the control valve ball. For some reason, LB7 injectors are bad for leaking just under the high pressure fuel inlet. The solenoid leaks can and do happen to just as many other applications using this same solenoid. That green test bench at 0:56 is a Bosch EPS 205. My company has three of them. Usually when a set of LB7 injectors come in for a "making oil" complaint, we see them leaking from the main body. Less commonly, they'll be leaking from under the solenoid nut. (Cummins injectors do this as well). Injectors that are stuck open are usually a result of aftermarket rebuilds using poor quality control valve sets, or fuel contamination.
The Bosch torque wrench we had to buy to assemble these is worth over $14,000 (it's an amazing torque wrench). We had to build a clean room with HEPA filtration, and the calibration bench that validates the build was over half a million bucks.
Well I had a GMC crew cab long box 2002 . Bought it new and it pulled our 37 ft. Montana. I traded it in 2014 . It NEVER experienced any of the issues ,engine or transmission that you have outlined. I serviced it by the book and it had 440000 miles on it at trade . It never had an easy day. Kept it pure stock and I averaged13.1 pulling. I sure do miss that truck!
Been wanting to get an lb7 duramax tells me alot on what I need to know to look for before I buy it. Duramax all the way!!! Best diesel!!!!!!!
Hey Rich, you were almost right, at the time you posted this video, was the first day I started changing out the factory stock injectors in my grandpas 2002 lb7. It has 313,000 miles on it, also did high pressure pump at the time
5mm Allen key does most of the job. Hammer the socket into the bolt. The jarring seems to loosen them up. For anyone doing the job
i just tac welded crappy rounded out allen keys to them and got some different hardware to replace them. but yes hammering a socket on it works wonders for not only these but any rounded off bolt/nut. hell even "lock" lug nuts too

Truck is at 150000 miles now, I only use it as my camper hauler….I have also done the front end 3 times and Im getting ready to do it a 4th time with Kryptonite UAC and PPE components. …..This truck has spent alot of time exploring Baja and the desert south west….oddly enough the truck has never let me down….I just bought a 2021 Colorado z72 duramax as my runaround truck, very happy with it….
That cat used to be all orange... 😄
Lol that cat is done greasy as hell from being around those nasty ass diesels!
It’s actually a different cat ua-cam.com/video/3in6N-xyPeQ/v-deo.html
My white fur shop kitty knocked some things over then slid into a pan of filthy limited slip differential oil. I washed her off but she stunk like sulfur for months.
My dad has one of these and you are correct, the injectors went out at about 115,000 and it's time to do them again in a week or two. I'm glad I run into this video. Was wondering what would be a good injector to go with and if I should replace the lines at the injector. Seen another video where a shop said they should be replaced
I had the CP3 pump go out on me. I ended up upgrading to a bigger pump. Was a pain in the rear. Great truck though
That is because GM didn't use a lift pump to feed the CP3. Dodge did.
My LLY Kodiak needed injectors by about 125K miles, as it was smoking black a bit.....sure am glad they switched to the external injector style, made the job a breeze!
You forgot to mention the fuel lines underneath the truck that like to rot out causing it to suck air and create a no start.
Australia...... that happen to me in 06 lly
When this happens, will it have no compression? Thanks
I have a 2004 lb7 with 300,000 miles done 2 sets of injectors and a cp3 it’s mildly tuned and straight piped love my duramax
I loved my lb7 but she broke my heart “bank” to many times wife made me sell lol
I have 2002 LB7 and loving it. Changed injectors a year ago.
They make sac style injectors for the lb7 now, those last alot longer.
brenton freeman they only come in 45% over and up though right?
@@isaacrecord6162 yes, but as i understood it you can run stock fuel levels with 45s but you have more tuning ability if you want more fuel.
One thing I learned the hard way on my LB7 was replace the high pressure lines to each injector when doing a injector job. If you clean and reuse the old lines you are guaranteed to have injector failure again in about 30,000 miles.
B&K Excavating LLC high pressure fuel lines are not recommended for reuse. I work for a caterpillar dealer and any common rail engines gets all new high pressure lines as soon as you break them loose.
John Arp Wish my mechanic knew that on the first set... I learned it on the third set. Then number 7 started failing so I sold the truck.
Im sure I'm still running stock injectors in my lb7, I'm saying ATF is great. Also in my opinion the stock fuel filters weren't good enough either.
6 upgrades you should do if your going to do bigger injectors on top of just a better transmission/built gears
EGT sensors
Ram air/pulling cool air from anywhere but engine compartment
Better trans cooler + some Lucas stop slip
Open the port up on the water pump flanges
4 micron fuel filter
Lower fuel lift pump
You can comfortably pull 450hp at 800-900 ft-lbs from her, with out running into slippage.
I also run a tune for fuel efficiency, which technically I'm close to failing emissions, even though the math says the overall emissions are way less than, any fully environmental friendly DPF/DEF system. Most people dont consider the total fuel used and the impact that has 7L/100k (33.5M/G) vs the 12-14L/100k(19.6-16.1M/G) that they run when filtered, Hmm I wonder what the environmental impact is for having to dig up and extract twice the ammount fuel. which fyi the more raw oil you pull from a Derrick the less efficient they are, aka diminishing returns IE the first 100 barrles of oil cost 1 barrel fuel to pump out of the ground the next 100 would cost 2.
Also the DPF only catches the cancer causing soot, not the environmentally unfriendly Nox. So today we crank up the fuel to reduce Nox for the environment, while cranking out nitrogen strands that cause cancer. Which once it settles is pretty much harmless.
While if we stop think about NOx causing all the issues, why then don't we run diesels lean as possible then add catalytic converter.. Anyone?
Also Any one looking into buying an electric car should look at the methodology and End of life, to consider environmental impact. Hell even if you took the numbers at face value you really aren't reducing emission, all this press over 0.2% that's right only 0.2% and only if you dont consider the recycling of 1000lbs of lithium ion which if you do the impact becomes greater than any modem gasoline engine.
Ya there is a lot fraud and bribery in universities right now, and no you can't call it science, because science is simply the name we give to finding honest 'How?' To how the world we live in works, Bassicaly No amount of shouting/throwing money at the sky is going to shut off the sun, instead you can pull a Mr.Burns and block out the sun.
And yes that episode of the Simpsons describes perfectly what's going on in Academia today.
After you replace the injectors, BTW Bosch did correct the problem with the LB7 injectors when you buy the replacement ones, 10 years now on the replacements and not any problems. Do get a lift pump and filter assembly that you plumb between the fuel tank and main engine fuel pump (it has a water and air and particulate separator) I think mines made by Air Dog or something like that, major improvement in power and mileage!
Engine oil cooler is also an issue on those, expect to reseal that at about the same time as the water pump around 130 to 160 k. Heck of a lot better engine than what they replaced or any other diesel option in that era
DieselFume1 yes cause a 24v and 7.3 don’t exist
I have a crate engine LB7 with 10k miles on it, aftermarket 90hp injectors, a 64mm turbo and and after malarkey I take system and it runs like a damn dream.Ive had the granny go into limp mode because I stepped on it pretty good in overdrive but other than that it’s been amazing.
Good video this makes me appreciate my old 12 valve all that much more.

Yup love my 97 5speed 12v 4x4, and my 88 12v f150 4x4 Fordcummins! These truck will last me for at least 20 more years. I live by the KISS theory, Keep It Simple Stupid!
Is this necessary to comment on nearly every diesel video? I’ve seen this comment on EVERY diesel video I’ve seen in the last 2 days, give it a rest lmao
Hugh Mungus would you expect anything less from me. It’s not my fault you watch the same quality videos as me. 😂🤔
Other than everything on a 90s dodge truck is a pile of shit except the engine lol
Adam Bryant I’ve had my truck for 15 years and odds are I’ll have it longer then any thing you will have. 😂
Nice info. 2001 LB7 at about 4min you talk about passenger side head gasket. Mine has been goin thru coolant. There isn't any on the ground or oil. It does blow steam out of a hose that comes from a little black box. Read that it's filled with charcole. Ha idk why. I can let the truck sit for 2 days and slowly take the ratcap off and it explodes all over. It shouldnt be pressurized that long I wouldnt think. So Summing up you believe the Pressure is coming from the head gaskey?. Sorry about the long question look for to an answer thank you
Doing the fuel pump in the valley of the engine is way worse then doing injectors terrible!!! You need a lift pump!!!! And fuel filters CHANGE THEM!!!! As for the head gasket get a 3" high flow downpipe from Duramax tuner reduces EGTs considerably. As an owner of an LB7 in the great white north an excellent engine for cold starting no glow plug cycling and it'll start no problem -15. Surprising the GM dealer isn't that bad for parts either
$400 a piece for injectors?
Lb7 was a great engine! I had one shortly after the injectors finally failed with a 126,000km on the truck, that was only like 4 years ago
Sweet shop kitty says, “what you doing, what you doin, meowmeow?”
A whole lot of down to earth info in a super condensed amount of time. For any A types this is much much appreciated...thank you!!!
Really great trucks....just keep going and going and they ride so much better than anything else of their era...
That's the best power plant I've ever owned.
My daily driver is a 2003 LB7 with 190k miles, original injectors, original owner. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned.
Diesels and cats. Ye that's why I'm here
There’s a 2 inch hose to the top left of the water pump that is fragile too. Gave me a big scare right after I drove it home from buying it. Seen a lot of forums that others said the same thing.
No mention of FICM failure, huh? I’ve seen more than a handful of them fail on Lb7’s
Cole Franklin harnesses or the actual ficm?
These engines (and most other modern diesels) hate not getting up to highway speeds regularly. Our fleet LB7 was constantly in limp mode and in out of the shop because all it did most of the time was go no more than 30 mph. Whereas our Ford Bobtail 6.7 with a DPF delete couldn't care less (as long as we had it, I'm sure some issue would come down the line for the way it was run)
During the 1999-2002 period the Powerstroke 7.3L was and still is the king!
No it wasn't and still isn't it was slow. It couldn't produce a whole lot of power before faillin g
I miss my LB7, sold it to my father and it’s got a pile of miles on it now towing. Two sets of injectors, I did them once and my dad has since then. Been running a bully dog tuner, exhaust and intake shortly after I had purchased it in 2005. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another, only other dmax I like better is the LBZ.
Why has GM never put this in a Suburban? Boggles the mind
I thought some 2500s did?
J no, they put the shit pre duramax diesel in some. It was junk
I was gonna say my boss had one but it was square body so prelb7
You can swap one into it. People do it all the time
Roma Razumovsky yeah it’s all plug and play. You need a 2500 suburban though. And then get a wrecked Duramax truck and swap it all over. Use the fuse box from the Duramax and it literally all plugs in factory.
Even if your suburban is 2wd the 4x4 stuff bolts right in
I went though 5 sets of injectors in 150k miles and finally wife said no more get another truck so I bought a 2006 lbz love it and it has 340k on it and running good
Biggest problem with powerstrokes - Head Gaskets, EGR Cooler, Oil Cooler, Injectors
Duramax - Injectors and Head Gaskets
Cummins - It leaks a little bit of oil?
Vp44 fuel pump problems & lift pump. Killer dowl pins. 53 block problems. Newer Cummins wiring issues. And best of all... Trying to get a trans built to hold the torque for any length of time.
Cleetus McFarland himself went through a trans in his 6.7 Cummins in less than like 2 years was it? A friend of mines cummins had his trans just kill it self a few weeks back as well.
@@dsruddell KDP only works itself loose due to flexing of the timing case because of not installing the support bracket on a P pump.
Head gasket problems on a durmax? Um. . .Most people that have head gasket problems ovet boost with out building the rest of the engine up. Over boost any diesel or gas engine and you will blow head gaskets. Even at Banks when they go for boost on any diesel engine put better head gaskets on besides better head bolts.
@@dsruddell my 5 speed manual in my 91 w350 is still working great! Just gotta know what to buy.
I've heard (6.6 family) that certain years are prone to piston issues and crank issues. When I see them online for sale by an honest owner...they seem to usually have these issues. What causes these issues? Some with 200k miles or more and some with less than 100k miles. I've had them all...5.9 6.0 6.4 6.6 6.7 6.7 7.3 for work and personal use. I have an LBZ currenlty (first personal duramax) and love the damn thing. Pretty simple and straight forward to work on. Starts quick and easy. Awesome fuel mileage, tows great, rides great. Not a fan of its turning radius and funky hopping/skipping feeling while trying to make a slow sharp turn. But overall a great truck. It has 260k miles and never skips a beat. Water pump done at 240k. Everything else is normal maintenance. I would say the 7.3 seems to be a little more simple and easier to work on. I appreciate all these trucks for different reasons.
Most of those issues aren't on stock tunes. I've never heard of a duramax crank breaking to this day.
And normally the piston issue is more towards the lbz. The lb7 might have a weaker crank but never heard of that. They will bend rods on high tunes also.
@@jdrok5026 If you google duramax crank failure, there seems to be tons of literature on the subject being on stock trucks and tuned trucks. I did notice most of what I saw and read about cracked pistons were more often than not, about the LBZ.
@@calsam4112 idk I've googled it before on cracking issues I still have to go through about 300 pages of 6.5/6.2 engines being confused as duramaxs. Which just makes that so much more fun to read for me.
@@jdrok5026 Weird, I don't find much on 6.5/6.2's
I love Duramax's.
Thanks guy, I’m looking at buying a used one with 304K. It’s had the injectors done already.
Perfect truck; Cummings 12 valve, Alison transmission, Ford body/frame and suspension (any year after 2003).
Ditch the slushbox for an NV5600 or ZF6, and you're correct. I've shredded too many automatics behind diesel engines to trust any of them. One was even a BTS.
@@rustyshakelford4232 yeah because when I'm towing things what I want to be doing is banging gears!
*Cummins, and gotta agree with Rusty about the ZF6 or NV5600 for the transmission, either will hold up to more abuse than the Allison.
@@rustyshakelford4232 Stage 5 built Allison is the way to go
dodge since 94 has had he best frame and the transmission behind the duramax is a chevy trans thats branded as a allison.
I tell you what, LB7's sound amazing with its stock fixed vein turbo. But i love my LLY, your right about the having to pay to play, head gaskets with arp studs, 72mm turbo, 40% injectors, lift pump, and tuning, the stock 5 speed allison started hating me instantly. she doesnt get mad till i lean into it hard though, but the trans will be made stronger soon enough
