    Glad you gave those who are needing the visual knowledge to difficulty and the expected time that it takes to do this injector replacement job. One more big issue that I e found with these trucks is that you also may notice the abs and parking brake indicator lights come on and a DTC code be given for anti lock braking system fault detection, the simple fix to this issue is literally just an incorrect bolt used from factory that doesn’t provide the proper grounding as needed to the frame just underneath the drivers side area near where the body mounts to the chassis. Get a new bolt of better metal that will allow for better flow of grounding to the chassis and it will fully eliminate your abs/parking brake indicator staying on issue and trouble code to ever coming up again.

      As a disabled ex ford dealer mechanic when I did my first set on a 2003 Duramax I was able to do the injectors, Glow plugs, fuel pump, fuel lines and water pump started on a Saturday afternoon and finished up mid day Sunday with only hand tools in my driveway. It is a job but not a hard one. Watch a lot of UA-cam videos to see how every one dose it and you will have a few options on how to handle the Issues that comes up. My only real issue was pulling the glow plugs I think they were Original (I had just purchased the truck)

    When I did my injectors last time, reading from the forums gave me a bunch of extra good advice. Like, putting a dab of RTV around the high pressure line that goes to the injector itself. A lot of gunk and get down there over time and I thought it was worth while. Also, given your location Rich, it probably would have been a good idea to change the lines with new ones. But, I'm assuming there was a budget to meet with this.
    Particularly on an LB7, more so I'd say than on other Duramax generations, fuel filtration is paramount, a lift pump is great for these trucks just for the filtration alone. Along with a CAT filter adapter, you'll have some long lasting injectors.

    • @stevewaclo167
      @stevewaclo167 5 років тому

      While I agree adding sealant around the top of the injector connections will help prevent rust from forming and dropping into the injectors next go around, I’m beginning to wonder if it’s worthwhile since most times the only reason those fittings are coming off is to R&R injectors and anything that drops into the screen will need to be addressed when the cores go back for rebuilding. OK, I put silicon around mine too. 😀
      Also agree on new HP lines. I notice Rich left the rail connections open during much of the job and as you noted, debris that’s not even visible can do a number on the injectors.

      Also, I’m worried it could also be that my injector pump is the culprit. The issue I’m having is my truck is filling my crank case very quickly with diesel. It pours out my over flow tubes like crazy and covers under my truck and the poor person that is driving behind me’s windshield. It’s really bad, like fills my crank case with diesel in just a couple hundred miles. I’m changing my oil about 5 times a week. And it fills up a 5 gallon bucket every time. Do you know of anyway to check the injector pump to see if it has a bad seal or something? Im guessing it would be the seal on the input shaft? It lacks a little power when towing and is hard to start only when it’s hot. And of course it has very low oil pressure once it fills up with diesel. Any help on how to check that would be great. Thank you for your time.

    The lb7 is a great engine. Very reliable and much simpler design then the later models. Iv’e never waited to torque down the upper rocker cover. Never had one leak yet. Also the rocker cover bolts and the injector return bolts like to strip out. Arp makes nice replacement rocker cover bolts and merchant automotive makes much better return line bolts. Merchant is an awesome source for parts and info for duramax’s.

    I bought brand new Bosch injectors for my LB7. Been sandbagging putting them in. Helpful vid. Gonna kit the turbo same time. 250k miles and 4th injector been bad about 100k. Not making oil. Just smokes when idled in traffic for too long. Injector cleaner actually helped, from massive plume to zero after a 5 minute idle. But they still smoke occasionally when stuck in traffic. % are all good and close and low. Hope I didn’t buy new injectors for nothing.

    Rich, well before this video I bought an 03 LB7 with 200k on the clock and very bad injectors.
    I replaced them myself learning as I go, following old timer advice and torque specs carefully. I set the valves while I was there and it fired up ran great, but it had a light haze out the tailpipe. It had fresh oil and a new fuel filter. I had my new injectors tested and they were good. The oil pressure sits at 14 psi when warm, close to red.

    Only thing I saw that I would have done different was those high pressure fuel lines to each injector should have been replaced. It looked like you reused the old lines. I learned the hard way and reused the old lines the first two injector replacements within 60,000 miles. On the third set I replaced all 8 lines for about $600.

      B&K Excavating LLC reusing the old lines is fine, must throughly clean them first.

    • @TermiteBenny
      @TermiteBenny 6 років тому

      I was told from a few different mechanics and injector shops including industrial injection where I purchased my last two sets of injectors from that no matter how well you clean them, small fragments of metal can continue to pass through the high pressure system and cause damage. For $600 I’d rather be extra safe and install all 8 new lines with 8 new injectors. I still didn’t have luck even on the third set after 30,000 miles number 7 started having issues so I sold the truck. First set was replaced at 98,000 miles, second set at 140,000 miles and third set at 190,000 miles. At 220,000 miles number 7 was bad balance rate and truck was hazing bad so I was done spending money on injector issues and sold it

    • @Bradygoodz
      @Bradygoodz 6 років тому +1

      B&K Excavating LLC Mechanics are trained to sell you parts and labor. It’s how we pay bills. Most don’t own a sonic cleaner, or are too lazy too clean them.. lb7 lines are high quality and totally reusable. But if you have the money to burn it’s always nice to have new.

    • @Bradygoodz
      @Bradygoodz 6 років тому

      B&K Excavating LLC and that sucks you had issues like that with your truck. After owning and daily driving two duramax trucks for the last 13+ years (01’ lb7 , 06’ lbz) I can honestly say that it’s all about filtration and fuel additives with these trucks, if you don’t want a haze. If you want the injectors to last you must run a lubricity addictive and keep the filter changed regular with a tp3012 and watch where you fill up, many many lb7 forums topics have been started with “hazing after fill up” at a shit fuel station. I’ve fixed many hazing issues with a heavy heavy dose of power service mixed with tcw3 and a filter change afterwards.. if one can keep them clean they will last. My lb7 is on its second set with 270k miles and does not haze at idle.

    • @Bradygoodz
      @Bradygoodz 6 років тому

      Fau Q Power service and tcw3 two stroke outboard oil mixed together, Use 1/4 quart of tcw3 every fill up. Super tech sells it by the gallon at Walmart for $13. Mix it well with 1/2 quart or more of Power service. That part is key. Dump it in before you fill up with shitty #2 diesel lol.., lb7’s love it.

    Have a question have a 2002 gmc 3500 diesel van 340,000km runs and knocks at idle and sputters and hesitates when put in drive. Put back in park it idles really low and knocks hit gas idles back up but rough idle up van runs and sounds great only at idle and noticed she looses power while driving and hesitates. No engine codes at all when scanned. But white black smoke while under load. I’m stumped weather I need a injector job or FPR replacement.

    Rich, what's your thoughts on duramax not using a lift pump? Im not sold on the cp3 on my lbz sucking fuel over 20 feet through a filter. Does that shorten it's life? I think a frame mounted fass pump with its spin off filters that contantly circulates the tank would be sweet but its a good chunk of money.

    • @DEBOSSGARAGE

      Yes, that's what takes out the cp3, the starving effect. A fas will definitely prolong its life and much easier to install then a new cp3

      When I did my injectors last time I installed a lift pump as well. I really got it as extra filtration for the fuel and it'll just make the injectors last longer. The added bonus it has is it alleviates strain on the cp3.

      I put an air dog on my lb7 for the added filtration, the air removal aspect, and the lessen’d strain and starvation of the cp3. Ive seen cp3’s fail from fuel starvation on trucks that guys throw huge tunes on but never bother to put a lift pump on it. Its a good chunk of money but it is cheaper and much easier to install then a cp3. Also can help prolong injector life.

    Have you looked at the Cummins Achates opposed piston engine? According to the information, long stroke to bore ratio equates to much improved efficiency. Two cranks minimize piston speed associated with the long stoke. I remember the Nebraska Tractor Test data seemed to always favor the old John Deere two cylinder diesels for horse power hours per gallon. This is a really old engine design, the British had an OPOC engine in a ship back in the early 1900's. You can see the British engine on UA-cam videos, it is in a Museum......but today again it is new and wonderful in a pickup.....

  • @JosephArata

    It's a crappy engine to work on because V8 diesels are crammed inside the engine bay of round body trucks. If you really want an LB7, take it out of a wrecked truck, and put it inside an old square body truck that has a massive engine bay. Keep the damn thing stock and don't crank up the fuel sky high, and you'll have a truck that you'll love forever.
