The lack of DEM unity with Teddy & his flunky McGovern fighting against anything good Carter tried to do helped give the presidency to the Gipper! Contrary to the deluded fools in this video Chppaquiddick did influence voters against Teddy. Teddy criticized Carter for "hiding in the Rose Garden" when Carter was dealing with Iran hostage crisis yet as soon as Carter made 2 campaign appearance Teddy bashed him for leaving the White House. Teddy also tried to steal Carter's nomination at 1980 DNC even though Carter won it!

@@WytZox1 When he announced for the presidency in 1980, I immediately subscribed to the National Lampoon, so as not to miss anything. But pretty soon it became clear that his Chappaquiddick "Get Out of Jail Free" card wasn't valid very far outside of Massachusetts and it was going to be a long, hard grind. Sooner or later he would have had to face that issue. He dropped out and returned to the senate, where his seat was bought and paid for for life.

Camelot is dead, finally. And to the people who said we shouldn’t talk about Chappaquiddick, because 20 years had gone by, homicide doesn't work like that. Mary Jo’s poor parents lost their only child. The diver who recovered her body said, based on the position of the body, that she could have remained alive in the submerged car, in an air pocket, for a couple hours. But Ted left the scene of the accident, socialized, slept while Mary Jo asphyxiated, and read several newspapers the next day, but never reported the accident to police. And he never apologized to her parents, even though several of his family members wrote them letters.
And we know Ted was fond of “Waitress sandwich”-type sexual assaults. Thank God he was never president - but he did write to Soviet General Secretary Andropov to try to convince him to interfere in the 1980 election against Ronald Reagan. In reality, Ted Kennedy was no “lion of the senate.“ He was More of the Jackal of the Senate.

Edward Kennedy was not a very nice person. What he did to Carter was unforgivable. He (Kennedy) must have been privy to the complex issues the country was facing and how they were too complex for any Administration to solve. I think history has a more favourable understanding and grasp on this today with Carter's favourable place in history assured.

Carter did not nor had any interest in delivering the promises he made on the campaign in 1976. National health insurance, job programs, etc. Carter spent much of his time privatizing, cutting budgets for social programs, beating up unions, and deregulating industries. Subsequently, Kennedy ran against him and had the support of many Congressmen and many disappointed Democrats. The consequences of Carter's actions, from Reagan's expansion of them to 08 Financial Crisis to that we see today, have only hurt his legacy.
