I totally feel that "editing workload" thing. Each shoot it a project itself. This took 10x as long to do just because I was filming it. Ja I built that flask. I built the riddle, furnace, the burner, everything. I used to be very into foundry work a long time ago, and still have all the stuff in tubs under the house. Once in a while I want to cast something and it's nice that I still have all the tools down there. At my previous house I had a whole sand table, but these days I just don't have room for something like that in my garage. I'm glad you've decided to give it another shot! Building and sharing is fun!
@@jamessheridan88 Well filming a build always takes way longer than just doing a build. I think I spent something like 5 weeks doing the build/filming although that was just scattered nights and weekends. I have a job/family and this is just a hobby. Not sure how long the edit took. I guess I could look at Premier auto saves to see. I basically did it over the holiday break. Looking at the auto saves looks like I worked on it from Dec 30th -> Jan 5th. So something like 7 days. That was almost all of it, but then I kept thinking I'd shoot some more animation about pattern design and kept putting off shooting the talking to camera stuff (which I find stressful) so I didn't work on it at all until May when I just shot the talking to camera segment and called it done. So like one more day of shooting/editing then. I tend to have this problem where I shoot/edit various segments but then hem and haw over how to stick them all together into some sort of whole. Hell I'm doing that again now. I have 2 Christmas builds that I shot, and have most of the pieces edited, but haven't managed to shoot the talking to camera/glue parts to make them into actual post-able videos. Hopefully I'll do that before May this time. lol
Agreed, I’m very happy I came across this channel! I just wanted to see how to cast some metal but he has many skills I’m interested in learning them all lol
Great! Welcome aboard! Good to know you'd like to see another casting video. I have a half written script for one, but I basically let my project building enthusiasms take me where ever they want me to go, so I have no idea what video I'm making next. lol. (Well I know the one I'm working on now, but I don't know what comes after that...)
Thanks! I just read this while I'm in the middle of another edit. I was just thinking "Oh god I spent all evening making 8 seconds of footage! I must be crazy!" So it's good we're in agreement. :]
What a great video! Not only the content is technically good, you also add a lot of handy small details here and there. And the stop motion bits are an nice touch! Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!
Great! I’m glad you found it useful! I’ve been considering doing an all tips video but am still struggling with how to make a fun story around that. I’d been toying with a sort of lego time bomb diffusing thing, but that seemed a little too intense. Not really in line with the fully positive low key vibe I want for the channel. :)
@@retrotechjournal Well, there is always the solution to create a secondary channel for "behind the scene" and "off topic" videos. Or even just making the video public but shared by links only. This way, only the keen eye can catch the Qr Code with the video link hidden in the background of a normal video ; ) Anyway, I can confirm, this channel is fully positive, it's a delight to follow!
Just over 2.3k subs for this level of humor animation, information and knowledge sharing and done with charisma and style? I know I will watch this channel again and it will be 100k plus subscribers. Great video. PS i have a great grey beard too but definitely suffered some beard envy there......
Oh thanks! That's very nice of you to say. I suspect I will never get that many subs because I simply don't put out enough content, but I'm always pleased when someone likes what I've put out there. I prefer to think of it like "2.3k subs for only 3 videos is awesome!" and not "only 2.3k subs for 2 years of making videos" :] Grey bears unite!
Dude, your vibes are immaculate. Also, I recognize the forethought a lot of these shots take, and how much patience is required for stop motion. Much respect my guy
Randomly came across your injection mold video and liked it so much I'm watching your other videos. Like the others have said, great production and great balance. Better videos than many larger channels. I look forward to seeing more of your content. Hopefully more Injection molding and casting.
I’m glad you like the videos. I’m working on a different video right this second but do have plans to make a video or possibly some shorts about some of my injection molder updates.
I only have subscribed 5 channels in last 10 years and yours is one of them..that too with only 2 videos..something is quite funny and efforts are definitely evident in your videos..
this so was wholesome, thank you so much for taking to time to create this :) filming, making it, voice over, animations, makeing it fun. truley impressed and it shows you dont have to make a video every week. just one good one every now and again and that is enough
I'm glad you understand. I do enjoy making the videos but so much goes into them that I can't crank them out. They are a part of my life, but life has other priories. Am am working on more, but every now and again is about all I can manage. :)

Thank you! I'm so glad you found the video/liked it. Thankfully I love poking around in all kinds of different disciplines so that makes this crazy one man band thing doable. Not fast.... but doable. 😆
Yes !!!! Another movie ! pleeease !!! pleeeeease !!! On castings !!! On anything please !!!! Make another !!!! Another !!!! OMFG ! I'm 6 year old again ! Thank you !!! 🤩🤩🤩
🥰 I have been working on more. No worries. I have one 2/3 done, but keep getting distracted by other projects/ideas. It's sad when I've built the project and shot the stop motion and then the remaining stuff is all the talk to camera/stitching together, but the physical project is effectively over. I have to trick myself into getting the video done. I swore I'd work on it this 3 day weekend, but instead I've been making a brass tubing cutting machine. A process I call "Procrastinvention". 😆
Love this video, lots of character and good wholesome jokes. I see your last video is 7 months ago and I gotta say the world needs some more fun videos like these nowadays!!
I'm glad you liked it! I am working on another video. I'm about to go out in the garage and shoot some more right now! Maybe my channel description should be something like "Watch as he makes a 2 hour machining task take 2 weeks because he's filming it." lol
Thanks! I have fun making them but they take a lot of time to do so I only make them sporadically. If I videoed every project I worked on I'd never get anything done. lol.
Hope everything is going well for you. I Really enjoy your videos and they have such a unique pace.... and are very watchable over and over. And whether or not you decide to keep making UA-cam content.... I Hope you're still making stuff and enjoying the process! 😃👍🤘
No worries I’m always making things. It’s who I am. I’m still making videos too but they are just one of the irons in the fire so they don’t come out very often.
Oh and I just watched your Pine Tree video and it was great. Time lapse with camera motion, nice lighting, out of focus practicals in the background, great stuff! Subscribed.
@@retrotechjournal yes I couldn't agree more! Some of my ideas keep me up at night until I make them haha. And thanks so much for checking out the video and the sub! I really appreciate it 😊
Welcome aboard. I'm glad you liked it! I'm having a lot of fun learning to edit/light do sound design, etc. It is however labor intensive so I don't put out much content. Be warned. :)
I know I watched this before, a few years ago, but I can't remember if I commented or not. This would have been a better than average metal casting video without all the animations etc. But you really went the extra mile here. 👍👍
Awesome video! Great ideas, great voice, great editing, great sound and music and there is even stop motion. Love it! Your video is smart and pure happiness.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. I love geeking out about the details. I at least try to do a decent job with the audio/editing, etc. I record all the voice overs in my closet! The hanging cloths help reduce echos. :)
Thanks! I intend to make another video deep diving into the details of pattern design, but that has to go as a separate video. Kind of a "Things I wish I'd known about pattern design" or something. The good news is that AL is fairly forgiving so you can still get decent results without knowing a lot of those details. This was more of a "once though the process lightly" kind of deal. I always struggle with how much detail to put in.
This video is top notch stuff, the amount of skill and patience, just wow. Superb crafting and video editing skills. Simply amazing. You're insane. I n s a n e.
Thanks! That is a great thing about UA-cam. The audience really seems to appreciate what goes into making a video. I thought that would be kind of invisible. I guess here lots of viewers have done content creation so they have first hand knowledge of what goes into it. It's kind of great. I'm glad you liked it!
I would like to see a video on that going in to more detail. ... Great job! Love the way you shoot/edit your videos. Now I'm a subscriber. :) Can't wait to see more.
Great! Welcome! I think from now on I'm going to end all my comments with "see more" just like you. Then folks can wonder if anything will happen if they click on... see more
This comment is just to feed the algorithm. Come on UA-cam, push this video. Every professional youtuber would have made 10 videos out of this. Why can one really good video not count as 10. Subscribed. See you in one year or so... hopefully
lol. When I first saw this and read the first line I kind of assumed you were a script and didn't read the rest. Oops! Sorry about that. Yes I do think UA-cam favors folks that are cranking out content every week, which is exactly not what I'm doing. Making the videos is just another one of my hobby projects, and I don't want it taking over all the others. Part way though the foundry video I started wondering if I should have broken it up into parts or something, but then there would be a dangling end hanging out there and I'd have to make it all work together in pieces which is maybe harder from a story telling perspective. Plus added stress about getting the next part done. This way I just noodle around on it for however long and then plop it out there when it's done. No loose ends. Hopefully as my video making skills improve I'll be able to go a little faster. Most of the foundry stuff was shot over the Christmas/New Years break, but then it took me forever to make the handle/cook the things/film the talking to camera parts. Thanks for subscribing!
One of my coworkers shows my videos to her kids. I was always kind of feeling like "Really? They liked a 20 min video about injection molding?!" lol. I'm glad you like them.
Howdy bro. I've been watching hit videos and am enjoying them. They have great production value and I bet you spend 40-60 hours on each one it shows and it's good stuff.
Thanks! You called it. I put an insane amount of time into making the videos. Once in a while if I have an idea for a crazy shot I'll spend an entire day filming/editing just to get some 4 second shot. In my injection molding video there's a shot where the camera moves down with the band-saw blade, and goes through the material. I spent a whole day filming that. I had to take my band-saw apart and make an adapter so I could run it smoothly at low speed using my drill, etc. Total insanity. lol. But fun to do. ;]
At the end I was wondering "whats he doing frying the bat" then it hit me . . Its the whole reason why we're here 😄 Great job! Loving the camera work! 👏👌
That's a high complement coming from someone who's made a casting video! (Just watched it) Interesting to see someone doing such small castings. I built a weird motorized spin caster for doing small stuff. Just to be sure to have enough pressure to get into the details. I cast our wedding rings but I did that as investment casts. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I try to pick the music before doing the edit which can be a little strange and time consuming. Listening to fragments of a 100 songs to find something you like and you think fits is crazy making.
Another great video The little touches go a long way to making your channel something different and special. I used to attempt things like this, and unfortunately overdid it. You have the balance just right in my opinion, I feel I could continue watching these videos even if they were a bit longer
Well it is a fine line one has to walk making these things. You want to show the process but not bog down into so many technical details that no one wants to watch. I was trying to avoid lots of technical terms like Draft Angle /Cope / Sprue etc. I guess maybe I should have gone a bit more technical. Sorry!
Thanks! It is true I didn’t strictly need a match plate for some simple feed system stuff, but I wanted to show the whole process so if folks were dealing with a more complicated part they’d still have some idea how to do that.
Thanks! Ok cool. I've done a lot of thinking about how to best present that and have written up some bullet lists of shot ideas, etc. Since you're interested I'll up it in the queue. I have two other videos that are in the works about this years crop of Christmas Gift builds, but after that I'll work on the pattern design one. The issues around that are quite interesting and I think stop motion/claymation may be a great way to demonstrate a lot of the issues in a clear way. It's going to be a lot of work though, so don't hold your breath!
This is an extraordinary video and I love your editing skills and stop motion animation. You're very talented. Your videos are so calming and relaxing but also informative. 👍. Couple suggestions, put a piece of cardboard under your crucible in the furnace, it keeps it from sticking to the bottom, and talc powder on your piece before the sand will help it to separate more cleanly when removing it from the sand, otherwise fantastic!!
Oh thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. I used graphite powder (I dust on from a little knit bad bage from a sock tip) as my separating powder (instead of talc), did I not have any footage of that? Oy so easy to miss. Great tip about putting cardboard under the crucible. At these temps/with a steel crucible I haven't had sticking issues, but I'll keep that in mind if my furnace gets gunked up with something. Thanks for taking the time to share some tips!
I'm glad you like it! I was a bit worried that people interested in looms might not be interested in this. :] My production rate for videos is super low because they're so much work. For every one thing I video there are a zillion things I build that go undocumented. Still the videos are fun to do. Thanks for subscribing I appreciate it!
I’m glad you liked it! I like that you mentioned the soundtrack. Picking the music and doing the audio design takes a surprising amount of time so it’s great someone likes it. :)
Yes, but this way the pattern is reusable. I can make 10 bats with just a tiny bit more work. Lost PLA casting is a fine thing and useful if you have complex geometry that can not be removed from the sand easily, but it requires more steps, and more finishing steps per piece if you want better than as-printed surface finish.
It’s criminal that this video has only 17k views, it’s so well done. The music, the stop motion, the many different techniques! Love it
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! I put a crazy amount of time into making the videos, so I don't make very many of them, and that makes for fewer subs, fewer eyeballs, etc. So it's no surprise I don't get huge numbers of views.
This was fantastic. INSTANT sub. I think I speak for most when I say we would love to see more sand casting videos from you!
The production value of this video is insane
Thanks! I just read this while I'm in the middle of another edit. I was just thinking "Oh god I spent all evening making 8 seconds of footage! I must be crazy!" So it's good we're in agreement. :]
no worries the algorithm will soon pop up your vids and channel. For me, you are today's find, so thanks and good luck with your channel.
This video made me happy. Thank you for sharing your creativity and grace.
Thank you for the positive comment. That gave my day a boost to!
This was so wonderful to watch! I especially loved the the claymation of the metal being poured into the mold. I learned a lot from that.
Oh thanks! Yes I thought claymation would really show how that works although it turned out to be harder than I thought!
This way, only the keen eye can catch the Qr Code with the video link hidden in the background of a normal video ; )
Anyway, I can confirm, this channel is fully positive, it's a delight to follow!
Yummers... thanks for the entertaining and educational stuff...
Onwards! To more Blissful moments!
Yes, Onward! Boldly into the future.
So many skill sets and tools. I'm trying jealous of your knowledge and workspace
I’ve been building both up for a long time. I’m still using the same diagonal cutters I had in high school. 😆 Moving is not one of my skills though.
Had me at “Scandinavian love child of potato chips and funnel cakes” ! I need this in my life! Awesome video btw, amazing editing and music.
lol. I'm glad you liked it! Happy Holidays!
Thank you. It is true that the amount of time that goes into these videos (if you added it all up) is shocking. I'm glad you liked it!
Don’t remember when or why I subscribed, but I’m glad a did!
Thank you! I guess you don't have to worry about being flooded with content subscribing to my channel. :)
this so was wholesome, thank you so much for taking to time to create this :) filming, making it, voice over, animations, makeing it fun. truley impressed and it shows you dont have to make a video every week. just one good one every now and again and that is enough
I'm glad you understand. I do enjoy making the videos but so much goes into them that I can't crank them out. They are a part of my life, but life has other priories. Am am working on more, but every now and again is about all I can manage. :)
Damn you put other creators at shame with the great editing style! amazing work! I wish you well!
This is really cool! Love the claymation of the mold being filled :) Super impressed with the creativity & skills!! I've been wanting to cast from a 3D printed pattern... maybe I'll actually give it a shot soon...
I'm so glad I came across your channel !! The craftsmanship and video making you just did there is amazing . And the amount of patience and care you had at the sand section was so surgical !!! (I'd be so anxious ) . Please keep posting 😊
I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for the nice comment. Surgically yours, RTJ. ;)
I hope you continue to make videos. The LEGO stop motion portions are incredible!
Thanks! I was working on new sequences just last night. I'm hoping to finish up the current video before July 4th. We'll see if I make it. The whole thing is always very time consuming. Lots of stop motion in the current project.
You clearly put more love into these vidoes than most folks do. It's a shame you don't have more subscribers.
Thank you! I like putting a lot of effort into the videos. Sadly that does mean I end up not producing many.
Need to ask my grandparents about Rosetta. From Erie Ohio, so someone must know about it. Sounds Intresting. Great videio by the way!
Truly amazing video, very few people can match your level of production quality and narrative. And that magnificent beard...stunning
Very well done! Please make more casting videos!
Wonderful journey to the ultimate sweet 'n' crispy creations!
the crunching sound! man I want some of that
Wonderfully presented material, I hope your channel takes off!
Amazing! Loved everything, project and montage! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I hope for more videos. Superb production values.
Thanks! I have fun making them but they take a lot of time to do so I only make them sporadically. If I videoed every project I worked on I'd never get anything done. lol.
This video was extremely refreshing. Thank you for sharing
I’m glad you liked it!
Awesome video Kurt!
What a hidden gem this channel is! Subscribed!
Woot! I'm glad you like it. Thanks for subscribing!
this was such a joy to watch! you can really tell you're passionate about the process and the film making :)
Thank you! The sign of a good project is that you have the idea, and then you can't NOT make it. I'm glad you enjoyed this one.
I really appreciate it 😊
Great video.
This is the first of your videos that Ive come across, but Ive already subbed. Your editing style is fantastic!
Welcome aboard. I'm glad you liked it! I'm having a lot of fun learning to edit/light do sound design, etc. It is however labor intensive so I don't put out much content. Be warned. :)
@@retrotechjournal Thats fine by me, theres plenty of content to keep me occupied in the mean time haha
Solid production quality
Nicely done video. Quirky and fun.
Just subscribed.
Great! Welcome aboard. I'm glad you liked it.
Amazing video, I’d love to see more 3d printing and casting methods ❤️
Great video. Lots of interesting content and top notch production and editing too.
I’m glad to find this video! Amazing ideas and super well edited
Thanks!
what a delightful video!! the subject is incredibly interesting and it was a pleasure to watch!
I'm glad you liked it!
one of the best videos on youtube i have ever seen
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it!
Truly enjoyed your animations. You are new to me. You won me as a subscriber. Keep up the great production of you videos.
Great! Welcome aboard.
I know I watched this before, a few years ago, but I can't remember if I commented or not. This would have been a better than average metal casting video without all the animations etc. But you really went the extra mile here. 👍👍
I’m glad you liked it!
what a lovely video you have done, with good information of casting, thumbs up lego man :)
Always awesome Kurt!
That was great...
I’ve got a ruff idea now.
Can't wait to see more.
Great! Welcome! I think from now on I'm going to end all my comments with "see more" just like you. Then folks can wonder if anything will happen if they click on... see more
great content, great humor, great editing. make more!!!
I'm working on one now.
Yesss!! Loved this!! DIY for practical, fun uses!! Thank you!!
Woot! I'm glad you liked it!
dont ever give up this channel...
Your edits are amazing. Keep up the solid work. Love the videos. Can't wait to show these to my kids.
Total insanity. lol. But fun to do. ;]
wow, just discovered you - what beautiful work, production quality! This needs more subscribers.
Oh thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
you are a gem of youtube! amazing job! full respect
I'm glad you like liked it.
Extremely nice video. A lot of effort went into making this!
Thanks! Yes I tend to put a somewhat silly amount of effort into these things. 😸 I'm glad you liked it!
Excellent video!!! I loved it's edition!!!
At the end I was wondering "whats he doing frying the bat" then it hit me . . Its the whole reason why we're here 😄 Great job! Loving the camera work! 👏👌
lol. Such a long story just to eventually get back to the actual goal. Sorry of my life! I'm glad you liked it.
That's the coolest sand casting vid I've ever seen!!!!
@@retrotechjournal Thank you kindly! 💜 I watched more of your videos and I'm so inspired! I'll keep it up as long as you do as well! Cheers:D
Awesome work on every aspect
Wow. This was awesome!! Nice music as well and superb ending :)
Thanks! I try to pick the music before doing the edit which can be a little strange and time consuming. Listening to fragments of a 100 songs to find something you like and you think fits is crazy making.
I would love to see a video with more casting.
Another great video
The little touches go a long way to making your channel something different and special. I used to attempt things like this, and unfortunately overdid it.
You have the balance just right in my opinion, I feel I could continue watching these videos even if they were a bit longer
wonderful explanation! It's really impressive and inspiring!
Oh thanks! I’m glad you liked it!
More detail!! My biggest problem with doing stuff at home is figuring out how
Well it is a fine line one has to walk making these things. You want to show the process but not bog down into so many technical details that no one wants to watch. I was trying to avoid lots of technical terms like Draft Angle /Cope / Sprue etc. I guess maybe I should have gone a bit more technical. Sorry!
You are 1 in a million. Outstanding work!
🙏
this was incredible you are such an inspiration! and an AFOL too! 😲💙
Thanks! Yes, Lego is the best.
i wish i had found this channel sooner! great vid!
I'm glad you liked it! Have you been doing foundry work?
Wonderful 😀 love the use of a match plate.
Thanks! It is true I didn’t strictly need a match plate for some simple feed system stuff, but I wanted to show the whole process so if folks were dealing with a more complicated part they’d still have some idea how to do that.
Cozy video.
5:45, I would love to see a video about that in more detail.
Thanks!
Found out about you from the Making it Podcast and subscribed a while back. The production value is so high, another great video.
This production is one of the best! Love it! This was the fastest bell notification eraned from me. And the soundtrack :-)
I’m glad you liked it! I like that you mentioned the soundtrack. Picking the music and doing the audio design takes a surprising amount of time so it’s great someone likes it. :)
@@retrotechjournal I bet it is. My favourite part was the "wood turning swamp blues". It reminded me of Justin Johnson's3-String Shovel Guitar (
Amazing video, sir. You are a master of your time.
lol. I feel like I don't have much control over my time. I'm glad you liked the video.
my friend recommended this to me and i think it is really well made. hugs and kisses from Sweden :*
I'm glad you liked it! It's nice to hear I'm getting good word-of-mouth in Sweden. Hi Sweden!
You can use plaster around the printed piece so that in a first step it melts in the oven and the cavity remains in the plaster.
