Colleen’s intro sketches continue to crack up and inspire me! I’m coming back to this vid after I watch Chihayafuru because Colleen’s recommendations never lead me wrong and I want to experience the greatness of this series first hand.
Your mention of the way the music is used reminded me of something I believe elevates the anime beyond the manga: the way sound is used. This is something that I think is taken for granted and seeing it in Chihayafuru shows why I love it. The way music is used, the voice acting and most importantly, in matches, the reciting of the poems and slowly understanding the timing of them. It made it so that when I read the manga, I could play the recital in my head and get the timing, which elevated the experience for me.
Yep I’m rewatching Chihayafuru… again. I actually cringed so hard when you played his confession I’m still crying. I just feel so bad for both of them. It’s surprising just how much happens in this one episode. I didn’t realize until you pointed it out but this is a tight 23 minutes without feeling rushed at all.
100% AGREED. this episode broke my heart so much 😭 i cried multiple times and kept rewatching especially since i've been waiting for the animation of that episode for years and every week of chihayafuru episode air i was so happy we are closer and closer to adapting this episode and it was beyond my expectations. the animation, the music. the voice acting, the emotion. so many years of waiting was worth it😭😭 also another anime episode that is literally perfect is the first episode of "to your eternity." it broke my heart so much.
@@ColleensMangaRecs there were some sad moments in the first season but nothing was as sad as that first episode. it shattered my heart. but it was still so perfect. no first episode ever made my eyes full of tears like that
between this vid and the power of connection vid, you've put into words so eloquently why i love chihayafuru and if you ever want to make one video essay for every episode i would gladly eat that up keep it up queen
i am now back. it has been two weeks. i rewatched the entire series. i read the entire manga. i just bought volumes 47, 48, and 50 in Japanese with all my hope bet on the fact that i can read and mostly understand hiragana. i am still going insane over taichi and chihaya and the love i had for them in middle school has resurfaced. i have been born anew
Ano~ Sorry to pop-up out of nowhere like that 🙈, but I was wondering what's the meaning of "mamossy"? 😅 I can guess it has something to do with Miyano Mamoru of course (and I'm a big fan of him 💜🌠) but I didn't catch the idiom/slang 🙈
Because of this video, I started watching the series and it’s an absolute 10/10 like I can’t stop thinking abt it after finishing it akxjdksksk and now I’m gonna start the manga 🥲🥲
Like a boat a drift ep of chihayafuru was totally heartbreaking for me and I still remember every tension building up in season 3 that lead to taichi quiting the team......
This was one of your videos where I stopped watching until I’d rewatched the 3 seasons (always a favourite of mine, and I can get a bit freaky over Japanese poetry), gone to Japan (for the first time) and bought some of the manga, read the first 5 tankoubon in Japanese, got bowled over by the beauty and expressiveness of the drawing, and finally hungrily found the rest of the manga online in English and read to the end of Chihayafuru. And now finished watching your video-essay. Yes, it’s something special, up there in my heart with the Hibike Euphonium anime and very few of other anime.
My favorite episode of anime is Kekkai Sensen Season 1 Episode 6 - Don't forget to Don't forget me. It has no bearing on the plot (especially with what occured at the end of the episode - if you know you know) and heavily focuses on a mob character but the episode has so much heart. It hit all the right story beats, showcased the type of person the main character was, also made me cry, and epitomizes what makes the show special.
Ooph, I had forgotten about this episode since it’s been a few years, but this video brought back all those emotion fresh. I would agree that the soundtrack to this anime does a lot of work to drive those feelings home. Even though it’s been years since first watching Chihayafuru the music puts me right back in it.
I still haven't gotten to S3 of Chihayafuru yet, but I think the direction on this show is pretty stellar all around even under typical circumstances, so def looking forward to getting there! Most of my favorite anime episodes also follow the "have to have their own narrative arc" rule, with the exception of some finales that I just think are really special (i.e. Wolf's Rain, Princess Tutu) Also a fair chunk of MushiShi, Natsume's Book of Friends, & Bebop eps fall into this camp due to their episodic nature so much that they almost feel like cheating, so skipping those or I'll be here all day lol. - Violet Evergarden Ep 10. I actually don't love this show as a whole and think it falls flat or has a shallow approach in certain aspects that pulls the rest of the admittedly good material down. But Ep 10 could absolutely be shown in a vacuum, grab practically anyone right off the bat, and give them an emotional gut punch. - One Piece Ep 1015. Less standalone than anything else here so can't really go too much into why it's a fan favorite (a notable feat for this franchise considering it's length and that the episode itself features no actual fighting), but it's incredibly focused and a tour de force for Megumi Ishitani as a director (her third episode with the franchise). She captures intimacy in both the small and grand moments so well here, and it's a fantastic emotional grounding point for the rest to come. - Kageki Shoujo Ep 8. One of the most standalone eps of this series to the point that if it was a bit more fleshed out, I think it would have made a great OVA/short film on its own merits. Almost 100% focused on Kaoru and goes very in-depth for 22 minutes, and has some lovely payoff whether you have the build-up from previous episodes or not. - Mob Psycho 100 S2 Ep 1. I actually wasn't super hot on Mob Psyho S1, I was more impressed with it artistically than anything else. But S2's premiere really turned me around on the show but also Mob as a character just with a sweet story about a girl afraid to show off or be sincere about her writing. The end of this episode puts a lump in my throat every time and I think it would even without watching the previous season. - Paranoia Agent "Happy Family Planning." Mileage may vary on this one due to it's subject matter but for me, it absolutely nails that trio of horrific, bizarre, and slightly heartwarming that I look for in any good spooky ghost story. Doesn't quite top Magnetic Rose in that genre, but given that Memories is a film comprised of shorts, it doesn't exactly count here haha
your videos are a comforting oasis during this drought of chihayafuru content after the manga ended. seeing you talk about it with so much love brings tears to my eyes, it really is something so special and those who have seen/read it understand what a masterpiece it really is. everything you said about the episode is on point. i remember watching it for the first time years ago and feeling like my heart had been ripped out of my chest, and i get the same feeling every time i rewatch without fail, eventhough i *know* what's going to happen. anyway, thank you for keeping the love for this series alive!
I've watched the whole series a few times and this episode always hits really hard. The first time I watched the last episode (regardless of the fact I was going to read the series) I had to go and look up what happened to find out if they had a happy ending. Although I have to be honest, I always shipped her and Arata. (nothing against Taichi, just personal preference also potentially unpopular opinion) The fact that the episode hits so hard says even more in my opinion because I wasn't evening hoping that these 2 would end up together. It's just brutal on the heart.
when i finished the show, i had to come back and watch all your Chihayafuru videos! During the time i watched and read it i kept thinking OMFG I NEED TO KNOW COLLEENS ANALYSIS 😭😭😭😭😭
Sorry for my English, I’m not a native speaker. Colleen, I’m a fan of your videos and I was awaiting this video for a long time. I don’t have anyone whom I can’t discuss anime with, and certainly Chihayafuru is one of the anime series I’d love the most to speak about. I agree with your theory, what makes a great episode is a great storytelling and not necessarily just one big moment. Chihayafuru is one of the best anime series I’ve watched and I agree with you this episode is amazing, although very sad for me. It left me scarred for life!! The negative effect about this sadness is that I don’t feel like continuing the story reading the manga or watching another season if released. I really liked Taichi and don’t know what to expect for the story without him. Also episode 24 didn’t help. I think it was a mistake to give Arata so little screen time in 3 seasons, and suddenly putting him in the spotlight after the sad ending of episode 23 didn’t sit well for me. I think Episode 23 was a better closure for the series, even if it was a raw one. Thanks for the amazing video Colleen, I like to practice listening English language bye watching your videos
When I saw the title announcement of new video coming up, I thought good, sounds interesting. Since it’s chihayafuary, I will comment about the best episode for me, one that has that scene , that I repeat on a regular basis to feel that tingling pain again. With the funny intro sketch, I didn’t think Colleen would choose that too. So many emotions I felt which pretty much what Colleen said, but the mamoru supremacy rules the most for me. Starting with silence Then desperation, clinging to little hope with courage but sinking feeling Then the immense painful voice saying “ don’t love everything about you”, with the enchanted twinkling music in the background. Oh my good😭
I did go watch it first and have now binge watched the whole thing and am obsessed but also heartbroken. 10/10 recommendation, it really is a beautiful episode for a beautiful series 😭. Hoping we get more season🤞
I dont really agree with "the best ep needs the build up + climax in itself" so I'd probably go with Gintama ep 305 for the best episode. Because it has all the things that make the entire series so special for me. But MAN this video makes me wanna get into chihayafuru asap
Chihayafuru is really great. I'd say though the best episode in Chihayafuru in my opinion is not as good as the best chapter in the manga story wise. Also, based Gintama fan.
Totally fine to disagree, this is a personal opinion video first and foremost lol. I have never watched the Gintama anime but did used to read the manga and have been meaning to go back to it someday.
I’m so upset I can’t finish this video yet. I’ve never heard of this series but stopped watching this just to start it and now it’s been 2 days and I’m halfway through season 2. Thank you for the recommendation!
I wish this series had the same impact on me, but i can understand when thinking of "march comes in like a lion" as an equivalent. it definitely has episodes that resonate similarly to me the way this episode does to you. on the other hand, taichi is my favorite character from this series so I still really felt for him here. that question he asks chihaya about if she knows he's not made of stone!
the goofy, over-the-top typing in the opening sketch got me. I'm a simple guy: someone purposefully misspells words for a joke and I can't stop laughing 🤣
This is something I ponder about a lot and it's hard to say because with anime I so often just think of specific scenes or stretches in the story that may be more than 1 episode but the one example I can think of on the top of my head is always episode 131 of Hunter X Hunter.
I felt so crushed by the end of this episode when I watched it while it aired since they were my ship, I could feel something going to go wrong though but it was still such a shock. I didn't connect the beginning to the end like that though so it was interesting to hear how the whole episode plays out.
Colleen: [smiling and confidently proclaiming that this episode is peak anime as they are about to replay some scenes for us] me: [coughing bc they are absolutely right & I'm about to get my heart shattered again by this episode] yEs, chEf 😢😭😭
okay I had to stop and laugh when you said that mamoru miyano put his whole "mamussy" into this episode. i mean, he really did. this whole series cemented this VA as one of my favorite VAs of all time but that wording... LMFAO
Perhaps not "my" best anime episode of all time, but it´s definitely up there with the best of the best. Also the contrast between S3 EP 23 and S3 EP 24. EP 23 probably the best episode of the whole series in the anime so far. EP 24 being one of the worst, but I get it was hard to end the season on a proper note.

That's really unfortunate as he's one of the best characters in the show and it seems you may be viewing him in a much different way than he actually is portrayed in the series.
Colleen’s intro sketches continue to crack up and inspire me! I’m coming back to this vid after I watch Chihayafuru because Colleen’s recommendations never lead me wrong and I want to experience the greatness of this series first hand.
