    My tiny kitchen space in my studio apartment has only one drawer. My daughter bought me a modular, adjustable drawer organizer, but since the kitchen cabinets are older, the drawer size does not correspond well to the unit. So, I discovered that a local building supply store sells Partition sets, made from a type of plasticized cardboard in white. It is brilliant, each piece has slots in them, you can measure and cut off what you need, and then do an interlocked cube or rectangle to fit whatever you are organizing! Very budget friendly and it works!

      I saw on Pinterest that you can turn a regular rectangular box with a lid into a double compartment organizer if you cut the bottom part in half. Have you tried that?

    My kitchen has 1950s wooden cabinets and drawers. I’ve been calling it a utility drawer for a few years. I decided that if I had a few tools in the kitchen, I wouldn’t have to go down to the basement workshop. (I had a similar one when I lived in a city apartment.) Half of it has containers for a small hammer, screwdriver with changeable bits, a utility knife, twine, twist ties, and super glue. Behind the plastic wrap, foil and waxed paper are a stud finder, digital measure and a 25’ measuring tape. There was a little more room, so I put the sandwich bags in there too.

    I have those same magnetic bag clips and I wedge them between the drawer back and the organizers…they fit perfectly with the wide part of the clip upwards. This not only helps the contents of the drawer to stay put but makes the clips easy to grasp when needed! That also leaves possible additional storage in the organizer for other items that may eventually need a home in the utility drawer.

    One of the best pieces of advice I’ve gotten from your channel is eliminating a “junk” drawer. I actually moved the location of my “utility drawer” out of my kitchen into the hall laundry area, and I keep the doggy bags, some useful tools, extra command hooks and there’s a couple of pens in there. And my washer & dryer user manuals

    What a great how to video! Makes me want to get all bamboo organizers for my drawers! I would say that the batteries might not need to be in front, and that maybe the pens and ceramic box cutter should definitely be in the front of the drawer as you would reach for them more often.

    I call that drawer catch all instead of junk when I had my own place. Currently I live with relatives so I have a catch all bin from Office Depot with these items, and I label it on the outside with the items that are inside the bin.
    ❤ these types of videos.

    I love utility drawer videos because I don’t have one, so I am curious what people put in them & where I’d keep those things. Straws are with the flatware, batteries in desk drawer. . . No need to keep them in the kitchen b/c apt is not that big. I did buy a small desk top organizer from Ikea years ago, that is 2 tiny drawers-that is great for rubber bands & twist-ties in the kitchen. I do have masking tape and a marker, but they are in the foil drawer b/c they are used for labeling foil wrapped things.

    • @NoDecaf7
      @NoDecaf7 7 місяців тому

      I also have a lack of utility drawer. Our straws are also with flatware, Batteries are with tools, but we live on one floor so the tool box is literally one room over from the kitchen. Scissors etc belong in the office area, though we have a pair of lefty scissors in the kitchen for my partner hanging on a magnetic hook on the fridge. A few dry erase markers and pens live in a magnetic holder on the side of the fridge with the masking tape for labeling leftovers and spices 😊 We did have a junk drawer in my childhood home though and it was NOT organized and did contain all of the things the average person would keep in them - officey odds and ends and fasteners (push pins, twist ties, household nails and screws, Command hooks would go here), lighters etc. but we didn't have a formal office space growing up in the 90s so there wasn't a more reasonable place to store that stuff.

    Looks great, Kay! Be careful with the batteries stored right next to your dishwasher. I had a flashlight in my utility drawer, also next to my dishwasher, and I swear it was the steam that caused them to corrode in a very short time.

    • @LouiseHultcrantz
      @LouiseHultcrantz 6 місяців тому

      I'm also unsure how to actually store batteries. I heard that you should store your dead batteries in an airtight glass jar because they can react with each other and... Idk catch fire? Create a gas of some sort? Don't remember. But anyway, just by habit I started to store my new batteries in the same way, in an airtight container. But I'm not sure if that was a good idea because every time I go into that container now to grab new batteries it has a really strong smell inside...

    Tip: if you have any kind of boxes you have bought for fantasy purposes, try how they fit into your drawers ;-) . In my case it was BINGO! Allowing me to organize whole 2 junk drawers with boxes fitting in perfectly ! Juuust exactly perfectly shaped leaving no gaps! (And thats into very old odd shaped drawer! ;-) . Each now has 12 practically sized compartments i can easily take out as needed. To avoid them feeling messy i have designated one junk drawer for stationery related junk and other for other junk.

    I did this a while ago with cheep dividers and I must admit that your lovely organizers look so much better! I think I might upgrade to modular acrylic boxes. I hesitated to splurge like that but you spoiled me with this video 😄 I also keep my bag clips there but I really decluttered them. I keep all twist ties (for cord control) and rubber bands, I also like to have notepad and a pen and very important; all sorts of stickers I use for food containers in fridge and freezer. And one multi plug for occasional use. I was brought up with a trash drawer and for the life of me I don´t understand why we didn´t organize it. I never crossed anyone´s mind.

    My utility drawer is where my baggies (3 sizes), pens and markers, twist ties, bag clips and way too much more reside! I used a foam core board cut to size to divide a larger modular bin to fit two sizes of baggies! I try to go through it on a regular basis and clear out anything that needs to hit the trash can, or return to another area. I think this was a very good basic organization video and I would love to see more!

    My utility drawers on each floor have batteries, extra light bulbs (mainly small nightlight sizes that are still incandescent style), command hooks and wall Velcros, Velcro wraps. My second floor utility drawer in my bottom nightstand drawer also has product manuals for items used on the second floor and some plug ins that convert a single socket to 4 or 5 sockets. My first floor utility drawer is in a drawer on the TV stand in the living room. Tools are in a peg rack on the inside of my dining room drawer because it is the most centrally located spot in the house. I have a tool bag I can load and carry anywhere there as well. But I do have an extra Philips and slotted screwdriver on a peg rack on the inside of my bathroom storage door. I just got an extra hammer as well but so far it is sitting head down, handle up just inside my bedroom closet door behind the door trim on the floor. Straws, clips, etc are in a drawer with rolled up baking mats, small spatulas and small tongs. I haven pens & pencils, sharpies, highlighters and scissors in mugs in the kitchen, foyer where my command center is, end table next to my favorite chair, next to my computer and in my bedroom, so they are always close at hand where I need them.

    I use mostly metal binder clips from the office supply dept/store for bag clips. They take up far less room in the kitchen than chip clips and are perfect for sealing cereal bags so they fit well inside the box.

    In our "utility draw" batteries, ink pens, mini note pads, scissors, crayons, old candy, mini toys, nails, cords, cards, nails, paper bags, and a few lip balms & lipsticks. Now that we will be pulling out the cold weather gear can you do a coat closet organization? We have a large & long coat closet, and I swear, I am so afraid of venturing back there.

    Do you have any tips for storing tools? Could be an Organizing Basics type video.
    I don't have a large assortment of tools, but I'm the average person who lives in a house and does repairs. I have a hammer, a power drill, a power saw, their accessories, a few screwdrivers, etc, it isn't a ton but it can be hard to keep neat and easy to access the regularly used items, at least with my current storage solution.

    You can use balsa wood or foam core board from craft stores with hot glue or small wire nails to make your own custom dividers too. Just cut with sharp exacto knife to the size needed.
