The rounded eyes are known as "tareme", while the cornered eyes are known as "tsurime". There's a psychological component to this phenomenon. Due to the baby-doll look of the "tareme" eyes, it inspires a protective sensation in those who look at it. While the smokey and alluring appearance of the "tsurime" eyes give an impression of someone who is mature and dependable.
