Great review Adam, and 100% accurate. The DNR work on this is shameful, and this movie was shot on film. They could have 4K scanned this easily, but chose to cheap out and let the name carry the sales. I do not recommend this release in any way. Disney are the worst company to release 4K UHD Discs, and are not worth supporting anymore.

With how huge Disney is, you'd think they could easily have the talent to put a team together and be the best out there in terms of 4k quality. Feels like it's just a big middle finger telling people to stop buying physical media.
I went to Best Buy on the 30th or 31st of December and they already had this movie on the shelf. The cashier couldn't find it in the system and the manager explained he couldn't sell it since it's before the official release date. Looking at this video I think I owe that manager a thank you.
I waited so long for this 4k, I picked it up on Sunday. Then mid way realized the DNR, edge enhancement and black crushed. Switched out the 4k with old blu-ray that they included to see some color. In, T2 didn't even included the old blu-ray.

This is SUCH a disappointment! When they actually did a good job with Roger Rabbit 4K, I was REALLY hoping that it meant that they would do a good job with this one too. It makes me SO sad that they did not, because this is a great movie that deserves a great 4K transfer. I looked at screenshots, comparing the 4K and the Blu Ray, and yeah I think the Blu Ray looks better and more detailed because lots of detail was scrubbed out on the 4K :( Good thing I waited for screenshots/reviews before opening my 4K disc, so I'm gonna return it and stick with the Blu Ray, sadly.
The thing is that contrary to popular opinion, Disney has released decent movies, but it is not Disney itself doing those 4K releases. For example, Luca was a REALLY good release, but in this case it was Pixar, even Toy Story, and A Bug's Life, those are incredible looking 4K releases in my book, the remaster work is remarkable. The bad fame is when Disney itself releases a movie such as the case with Pirates of the Caribbean, we can see the horrible job they do with 4K and Dolby Atmos.
I decided against buying any disney 4k blu rays until further notice. I cannot support these extremely lackluster releases and it's shameful. It feels like disney wants you to focus exclusively on their app. Thanks for the honest review Adam.
Disney+. They think most people are watching on there (which is true), and that people won't notice or don't care about average AV quality (also true for a lot of the general public). Disney just want you to join the easily pleased masses.
Nothing beats the bluray release only thing i can say good about the 4k release is if you love this movie as much as i do use the 4k version at night to see it a lil better and 2nd only good thing i can say about it is the disc should take more uses so your bluray version last alot longer
Watched it last night, I couldn't be more disappointed... It wasn't even the DNR, the colors just looked so DULL and dark. The blacks were crushed, sometimes you could even see ARTIFACTS, on 4K disc out of all things. This is by far the worst 4K disc in my collection, it makes the T2, or even SW Episode 1 an acceptable release in comparison. It really made the film not enjoyable AT ALL. One thing I have to point out to you Adam, is that you are way too generous with the Audio aspect of movies in general. This audio track deserved at least a C, if not a D+. The audio track was acceptable at most, which to me is barely a passing grade. We need to start holding audio tracks to higher standards, after what we received with titles such as LOTR, Indiana Jones, or even The Thing, the bar has been set so high that we need to start demanding more. I am so sad this was done to Pirates of the Caribbean, the only thing that kept me from stopping the disc was the movie itself, otherwise I'd had turned it off 20 minutes into it.
As soon as you mentioned T2 I was like ah shit, Waxwork shit in the pan kind of deal. That’s a shame if I’m being honest because I do like this movie but never mind.
The Dolby Atmos track is locked with no 3D objects like most Disney Atmouse mixes, the bass is lacking, and about the only thing placed in the overheads and in the added rear channels is music score bleed.
My cousin wrote the story for this movie....it seems the 4k transfer does not suit his talent and the talent of all those who came together to make this movie.....
Hey Adam, that’s such a shame I remember when this was released on DVD the picture and the sound were outstanding I do not own this on Blu-ray. I don’t understand this overuse of DNR I could see fixing a particular scene that was lit or shot incorrectly and revealed things you were not supposed to see with the Director or cinematographers blessing. you would think the people at Disney would be movie lovers and film fanatic that would be like a car performance shop removing V8 and installing four cylinders I don’t understand very disappointing but thanks for letting me know as I had planned to pick us up have a good one as always

I'm not surprised at all. Disney used to be such a great company releasing fantastic animated movies and wonderful physical media released often with very original packaging. However, several years ago they completely stopped caring about physical media. Nowadays it's only one lazy release after the other. It's very clearly they just refuse to put any effort, money or manpower into any of their physical releases. The only thing they care about is people signing up for Disney+. All in all, this release of Pirates of the Caribbean is exactly what I already expected from Disney.

This is obviously the same transfer that's on Disney Plus. I couldn't finish watching it due to how underwhelming it looked. I thought they would at least work on the transfer for the physical release.
Oh no you would of thought they would of give this one more time and attention,I feel like all 4ks need time and attention otherwise what's the point, in some cases you may as well stick with the old blu rays, my gamma setting on my TV causes this effect on 0 which is unusual because its the mid way setting and its the most advisable, so I have to move it off 0 to prevent this waxy, almost shop dummy DNR look on alot of my 4ks.

Does the gamma setting actually do what it is meant to do, or is this waxy effect all it seems to do? Sorry for all the questions. Makes you wonder if it has been connected incorrectly inside, and the gamma control is actually a noise filter or something.
@@jonahlevin67 yeah I've checked out online forums and people have the same issue, I set the gamma to 1 and it looks way better, normal/natural, its not the greatest TV, from what I've experienced with Samsung tvs they have that horrible HDR+ feature which to me provides a fake HDR to the TV, my oppo player displays the HDR setting as it should so I just disable that feature on the TV and run with a standard picture setting, I don't use movie mode or warm tone settings as most people do because personally I don't like these settings, Its my aim this year to get my hands on an LG Oled and do away with Samsung tvs, they're also not equipped with Dolby Vision or Atmos so I am due an upgrade, thanks for your help :)
That costs a lot of money and most studios are too cheap to create a rebuild of the effects and go back to the original negatives and then completely reassemble the film from scratch.

Apparently Disney is as bad a making 4k Discs as they are at making overpriced Star Wars Hotel Experience. At least the Disc didn't cost anybody $6000 so count your blessings.

It never ends! I’m still pissed that Disney was allowed to purchase Fox, normally a company controlling a 1/4 of an industry is shut down by government!! We would have so many great films released by Fox on 4K if it didn’t happen… the only good 4K releases that Disney have are films that Fox had already worked on…. instead we are left with a massive back catalogue of titles that will never see the light of day on 4K… WHEN (not if) Disney pulls the plug on physical media, and they will be the first, it will be the downfall of physical media…. Stupid me bought the 5 disc set before checking reviews. The picture is way too dark and the Atmos mix is almost simple stereo. Next to no surrounds and subs and absolutely no Atmos tops. A complete waste of money.
A lot of 4k discs with a DI from the past 20 years are stuck at 2k unless there are original cut negatives to pull from the archives and rescan at 4k... if the film isn't full of CG effects. Even 2k upscales can look great in 4k with 10 or 12 bit depth, a wider color gamut, and HDR.
I have them all on 4K and they all have DNR, and reliance on teal colouring. I have the Australian 5-disc set, and it seems the only difference is that the Australian versions have Dolby Vision encoding, not only HDR 10. Either way, they look lacklustre, imo.
@Physical media agent they tend to do that. They will release movies in 4k in other countries but won’t here for a long time. Like the first Texas chainsaw massacre film is in 4k HDR but it’s only being released in Germany if I’m not mistaken. Which sucks because that will sell out here in the United States especially if it looks and sounds really good. Not sure why they release certain things in other countries but take forever to do it here
Too many CG effects. Disney is too cheap for an original source rebuild. However, if they knew what they were doing, even a 2K upscale could look pretty decent and the Atmos remix could have been stellar.
What a huge disappointment, I really wanted this movie to have a great transfer, I am glad I saw your review before I bought the movie and wasted 23 dollars.

@@comiccollex958 Their Atmos tracks suck for the most part anyway. Listen to Blade Runner 2049 and Dune in lossless Dolby Atmos on disc with a decent Atmos system and they will blow you away.

Agree the audio for me was garbage it was a d+ at best the surround was just and felt real quiet and flat even through centre

"Terminator 2" had a bad 4K transfer because StudioCanal believed that the 3D version was a good source for Lionsgate to use.

How does it compare to the Disney+ release? Is the Bluray still the best way to watch it?
I did a quick watch on some scenes on D+, it’s pretty much the same story. The Blu-ray is the way to go in my opinion.

That's strange, and worrying. The gamma control shouldn't really have any effect in that area. What is the brand of your TV?

Apparently Disney is as bad a making 4k Discs as they are at making overpriced Star Wars Hotel Experience. At least the Disc didn't cost anybody $6000 so count your blessings.

I remember seeing it in cinemas as a 14 year old kid and not a great version of one of Disney’s great franchises unsure if I will get the collection in 4K
The first four films have lousy 4k Blu-ray discs. They're already out in Australia.

It never ends! I’m still pissed that Disney was allowed to purchase Fox, normally a company controlling a 1/4 of an industry is shut down by government!! We would have so many great films released by Fox on 4K if it didn’t happen… the only good 4K releases that Disney have are films that Fox had already worked on…. instead we are left with a massive back catalogue of titles that will never see the light of day on 4K… WHEN (not if) Disney pulls the plug on physical media, and they will be the first, it will be the downfall of physical media…. Marvel fanboys enjoy your generic movies the mouse will be the end of physical media
Stupid me bought the 5 disc set before checking reviews. The picture is way too dark and the Atmos mix is almost simple stereo. Next to no surrounds and subs and absolutely no Atmos tops. A complete waste of money.

I knew this was gonna suck the second I read it was a 2k upscale but wow they went all out screwing it up
A lot of 4k discs with a DI from the past 20 years are stuck at 2k unless there are original cut negatives to pull from the archives and rescan at 4k... if the film isn't full of CG effects. Even 2k upscales can look great in 4k with 10 or 12 bit depth, a wider color gamut, and HDR.

I have them all on 4K and they all have DNR, and reliance on teal colouring. I have the Australian 5-disc set, and it seems the only difference is that the Australian versions have Dolby Vision encoding, not only HDR 10.
Either way, they look lacklustre, imo.

@Physical media agent they tend to do that. They will release movies in 4k in other countries but won’t here for a long time. Like the first Texas chainsaw massacre film is in 4k HDR but it’s only being released in Germany if I’m not mistaken. Which sucks because that will sell out here in the United States especially if it looks and sounds really good. Not sure why they release certain things in other countries but take forever to do it here

A lazy excuse of a disc. Why not restore everything from its original negative? Disney are just the awful.
Too many CG effects. Disney is too cheap for an original source rebuild. However, if they knew what they were doing, even a 2K upscale could look pretty decent and the Atmos remix could have been stellar.
Agree Adam the Australian disc is horrid and the sequels are hit miss on 4k too Disney really are the worst
The Australian disc is just the American disc anyway but the sequels are not much either.

@@comiccollex958 Their Atmos tracks suck for the most part anyway. Listen to Blade Runner 2049 and Dune in lossless Dolby Atmos on disc with a decent Atmos system and they will blow you away.
@@dan_hitchman007 I agree; I don't have Dune yet (saw it in a Dolby Cinema though!), but Blade Runner 2049 is an incredible experience on 4K disc, the soundtrack is scary on a good system.
